With each release, this East Coast singer-songwriter moves farther from the strictures of folk into the musical mainstream. While Dar Williams's artistic trademarks--lyrical introspection, melodic warmth, an occasional tendency toward breathy vocal preciousness--remain much in evidence on this collection, produced by Stewart Lerman and Rob Hyman, the expanded musical support adds more rhythmic propulsion and layers of harmonies to the mix. Among the highlights are "I Saw a Bird Fly Away," featuring the harmonica chirp and background vocals of Blues Traveler's John Popper and the keyboard of John Medeski, and a hymnlike transformation of the Band's "Whispering Pines," with vocal counterpoint from Cliff Eberhardt and harmonies from Alison Krauss. Other musicians making key contributions include banjoist Béla Fleck, trumpeter Chris Botti, bassist Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), and fiddler Mike Kang (String Cheese Incident). Titles such as "Farewell to the Old Me" and "I Have Lost My Dreams" reinforce the spirit of transformation, though one of the strongest cuts here, "Mercy of the Fallen," sticks closest to folk convention. --Don McLeese

"The Beauty of the Rain" is overall a sad, soul baring CD. The best song on the album in "Closer to Me" about a couple growing up to grow together. It was even featured on an episode of Laguna Beach. "Mercy of the Fallen" and "I Saw a Bird Fly Away" are both fairly catchy, but I don't think I really understand the songs. "The World's Not Falling Apart" is probably the most upbeat song on the album.

This album sets thought provoking lyrics to beautiful melodies that pleasantly haunt your soul. It was only a few months ago that I unintenionally stumbled upon "The Beauty of the Rain" (on the internet), and was captivated by the song, and by the extraorinarily gifted, Dar Williams.

This album is simple but so beautiful. One of my favorites from the last five years. It has such a rural feel to it and many of the songs are sad due to the subject matter of loss that prevails throughout the album. But there is a hopefull-ness as well that can be felt in the upbeat numbers.

This was my first Dar Williams CD; I happened upon it through Amazon's "Recommended for You" listings. Williams' lyrics are poignant and emotional, and her vocals are hauntingly beautiful. Her tone is light-hearted on songs like "The World's Not Falling Apart", and deeply moving on songs like "The Beauty of the Rain". If you enjoy the combination of free-spirited melody and heart-wrenching vocals offered by artists like Sarah McLachlan and Jann Arden, you will likely find at least a few songs to love on this album.

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

      You may not love Paul Sperry's voice, but you gotta love his wide-ranging interests and his obvious joy in performing American music. Singers exploring the contemporary American art song will note numerous composers' dedications to this quirky tenor, and listening to his recordings, you quickly understand why. His interpretations go right to the heart of the matter, and proceed right over the top only when it's rigorously demanded in the music. Singers looking for new repertoire will also appreciate the extensive liner notes, in which Mr. Sperry explains where he found the songs.

      The range of composers, beyond Billings and Bolcom to Weill and Weisgall, is maddening, giving a tantalizing taste of the diverse flavors of American song in the 20th century. The songs run the gamut of emotions, too, from Ben Weber's powerful 'Mourn, Mourn' to Cowell's sarcastic 'Who Wrote This Fiendish Rite of Spring?' to the loving memory of 'George.'

      I highly recommend this accessible and communicative Sampler, and would also suggest that listeners try Mr. Sperry's more tightly focussed collection, Romantic American Songs.
