Small Town Romance
Small Town Romance
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Spanning the artist's career from 1967 to 1982, Small Town Romance is a delightful introduction for the neophyte and a necessity for even the most casual Richard Thompson fan. This warm, clear-sounding live disc, recorded at the Bottom Line and Folk City in New York in '82, shows the singer-songwriter's singer-songwriter in top solo form following the dissolution of his partnership with wife Linda. One caveat: Thompson's vocal delivery--especially on songs that Linda used to sing, such as "A Heart Needs a Home" and "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight"--is a tad rough. One assumes this is the reason Thompson (according to label head Joe Boyd) asked for the record to stay out of print for a number of years. But such minor quirks invariably happen in live performances, and the missed note here and the cough there add to the record's charm. Thompson has rarely sounded as nimble-fingered (on the terrifically show-offy "Roll Over Vaughn Williams") as he does here, nor as emotionally in touch with his songs. Highlights include a heart-tugging rendition of "Down Where the Drunkards Roll," the jokey jig "Woman or a Man," and forceful takes on two Fairport classics, the anthemic "Meet on the Ledge" and the lovely "Genesis Hall." --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:
stripped and ripped.......2005-09-10
We all know how great a songwriter this man is. Here is Richard Thompson, stripped and ripped. No fancy arrangements. No celtic bagpipes. No intricate backbeats.
Just a man and his guitar, stripped.
Playing some of this best songs you'll ever hear, ripped.
Contractual obligation?.......2004-05-21
What's going on here? Thompson himself asked for this record to be taken off the market - and he has a point.
The songs are great. In fact some of them reveal more of themselves in this stripped down (one man and a guitar) format. It goes without saying that the guitar playing is top notch - what else would you expect from Richard Thompson?
But the recording is less than top quality, Thompson sounds withdrawn and the vocals are rough. Thompson has become a convincing and authoritive singer, but his vocal skills were not as polished in the early 80s. He gets away with it on some numbers but a lot of the songs on this CD were originally sung by Linda Thompson and suffer here from the inevitable comparison.
It's said, and with some justification, that Thompson should be heard live with an acoustic guitar. Do some surfing and you'll read reports of his huge live sound, the way he can use his amazing facility on the acoustic guitar to create impressively full arrangements. Believe me: everything you've heard is true. You DO want to hear this guy live with an acoustic guitar.
This CD, whilst not a total bust, is hardly the best live showcase of Thompson's talents. You'd do better to surf over to Thompson's offical site (www.richardthompson-music.com) and buy a copy of Celtschmerz - one of the "official bootlegs" that he markets directly.
acoustic masterpiece.......2004-01-17
This is Richard Thompson as he was meant to be heard-- live, acoustic, and solo, without the other instruments that often distract one's attention from the man's incredible playing.
This record was recorded in NYC in 1982, shortly after Thompson divorced, giving some of the songs (e.g the haunting "Beat the Retreat") a wistful edge. It is a retrospective, mixing Fairport songs, Richard and Linda songs, and even a Hank Williams cover.
Thompson is not only anintriguing lyricist (e.g. "The Great Valerio"), he is a master acoustic guitarist, not only technically proficient but extraordinarily sensitive and nuanced. On many of these tracks, he is powerful; on a few, he is simply stunning-- "Roll Over, Vaughan Williams" and "Down Where the Drunkards Roll". Thompson's music recalls English folk, Renaissance troubadors, and American blues, often seamlessly.
The occasional dud tracks on this recently re-released record are minor, skippable inconvencinces on CD. This is esential Thompson.
Enjoy this 1982 live/solo performance.......2003-01-06
Though a Richard and Linda Thompson's fan, I had never tried to find this one. RT himself said he didn't want it to be released, and I thought "Well, he's the artist after all, he should know ."
What's more, the Bright Lights songs were kind of sacred to me, and I was very sceptical about his singing Linda's tracks. The idea bothered me, in fact.
But then I got a chance to listen to the record .. and I really liked it.
What this guy does with only a guitar and a voice is truly amazing. You really feel as if he's playing in your living room, and that's great. My favorite track is Time to bring some changes. It's all the more emotional as (I think) he'd just separated from his wife.
A heart needs a home & The great Valerio are both interesting alternate versions. I found his rendering rather good.
Down where.. and Never again obviously do not attain the power of the old (Never again is one of my favourite Linda's vocals). I think they are the two missed ones on the record - but then, these two are best suited to a high pitched voice. Don't even try them if you're a man with a low voice (whether he really chose them, or just did them because he was asked to and she wasn't here anymore .. is another story).
I am not very much into Fairport, but the Fairport stuff he sings here sounds rather good, actually.
My only quibble is that the sequencing makes it a bit tiring to listen to all the tracks one after another - it's much better if you do your own selection with the skip forward button.
On the whole, Small town romance is a very enjoyable experience .. especially if, like me, you live in a place where you'd never see such good acoustic performances
A very rough diamond.......2001-10-18
Having previously heard only one Richard Thompson record before this one, I had a lot more to choose from. I picked Small Town Romance because, being a solo fingerstyle acoustic guitarist myself, I especially wanted something I could learn from. To say that I was not disappointed would be a huge understatement, and even after Mock Tudor (see my review of that one) I was more impressed than I expected to be. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is the decidedly rough production quality: the vocals are much louder than the precious guitar I especially wanted to listen to, and other listeners might find that important as well, since this is after all just Thompson and his acoustic. However, the bootleggish sound quality and unashamed selection of material (including a couple of nasty throat-clearings from Thompson, who sounds a bit under the weather) are as much strengths as weaknesses: it gives you a chance to hear that Thompson seems incapable of sounding bad, no matter what the circumstances. "Time to Ring Some Changes" is crisp and strong, and an unusually straight protest song for an artist whose songs, even the social commentaries, are usually so deeply personal. "Beat the Retreat", "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" and "Never Again" are achingly sad, heartrendingly sweet and filled with wry love (and all the more honest for the aforementioned throat-clearing). "Honky Tonk Blues", a Hank Williams cover (!), features a bi-octave guitar solo that has so much punch it may FORCE you to dance. The rendition of "The Great Valerio" is spooky and bleak, like being alone in a crowd at a carnival. The Celtic-flavored guitar cross-picking of "How Many Times Do You Have to Fall" is modal, pipey, bittersweet and skillful enough, but right after that comes "Roll Over Vaughan Williams", an unbelievably quick, richly ornamented true Celtic reel that will blast you through the frigging roof! Finally, the Fairport Convention anthem "Meet on the Ledge" is nice to hear; while this rendition of the song lacks the production values of the original Fairport studio version, the track includes a bit of wry (and jokingly rude) Thompson humor at the expense of both himself (as usual) and an audience member: "I swore I'd never [play this song] again, but I'll do it...'cause you're such a fab audience!" Audience laughs, and one member makes an inaudible comment, to which Thompson laughingly replies, "F**k you!"

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Just Nice Music.......2007-05-13
Frank Patterson does his best singing when he simply sings the familiar songs with heartfelt passion. He does nothing fancy and ends up with a superior product. Well worth the price.
"Love and Happiness through the power of song".......2000-03-26
Irish tenor Frank Patterson was born and raised in Tipperary, performing at an early age with the Wren Boys. Patterson's early works were primarily classical, but with the increasingly popularity of celtic music, Frank turned his energies toward his homeland traditional folk ballads. PBS special "Ireland in Song" was a tremendous hit, giving him more exposure than ever to the world with his "God" given talent.
This album - "God Bless America - An Irish Salute", is one of the most touching compilations of music ever recorded. One of the highlights is his wife Eily O'Grady and her Irish Harp Orchestra, simply an emotional pair of people enjoying what they do best, spreading love and happiness through the power of song.

Saw the PBS Special.......2000-03-22
I do not have the album but saw the PBS special last Saturday night and have been looking for the cd and will buy it. The song My Son is the most moving and beautiful I have ever heard. Having three sons, I felt it related to each of them and it can be for either mother or father. The rest of the songs were superb. Mr Patterson is a warm and wonderful human being and has a great voice. His son played the violin when he sang My Son, by the way. Also, his wife's group of harpists are wonderful. All in all, a great group of songs show and I am sure a great cd. I also want the tape when it is available.
Words.......2000-03-18
Sorry, I have not heard this album, but the song "MY SON" was suggested for a Mother/Son dance at his wedding. I would surely love to see the words first, before I purchase the album.. Thank you for any help you may have.

A strange experience..........2003-11-03
They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.
The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

Music just does not get any better than this CD! I am a musician and hearing these two artists is a thrill. This is a CD for all music lovers. You will not be sorry if you purchase this CD

You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.

Album Description
What makes music Romantic? Like beauty, Romanticism is in the eye - or ear - of the beholder. As a musical movement, it is generally associated with nineteenth century Europe though the Romantic movement actually originated in Germany. In this exquisite trilogy of romantic classical music,
The Romantic Approach explores the origin of music Romanticism, French and Italian romantic music, and 20th century American romantic music written after the end of the Romantic era.
The first volume in this trilogy,
The Romantic Approach: A Special Collection of 20th Century American Music may have surprised listeners who felt that contemporary America has produced very little Romantic art. The diverse roster of this century's finest composers also reflects the diversity in the music, from jazz influence to classical. This collection of works echo the lyrical, tonal style of European classical music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Two: A Special Collection of Classical Music from Italy and France showcases the very heart of Romantic literature. Of all the countries in the world, France and Italy have been those most associated with things romantic; even the sounds of their languages are musical, and that songlike quality has certainly colored much of the music of these two countries. Some of the works and composers on this volume will be familiar to opera lovers, a central part of the musical life of these countries. It is rounded out with unjustly neglected masterpieces from several gifted French and Italian composers.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Three: Classical Music from Germany takes us back to the origin of the Romantic movement - to Germany - and to the emotional works of its greatest composers. These composers could move their listeners without having to resort to painting a particular image in sound. This is music that can speak to the emotions without dictating which emotion you should feel; in fact, it can evoke a different vision or story in each listener.
