While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz

Sugary sweet.... Your speakers will never sound better!.......2007-07-19
Saw this group at Stagecoach fest in Coachella, CA. The lyrical parts are sometimes thought provoking, but the music steals the show. These young musicians are amazing and truly goosebump material. Harmonies are dead on and whoever mixed this stuff should produce every known band! Even if you don't like country or bluegrass, this disc is a breath of FRESH AIR! The bonus DVD is a nice addition. Sara Watkins is cuter than a daisy. Too bad so many listen to the pre-packaged garbage on the radio today... These guys should be on top!
Not bad, but not exceptional.......2007-07-18
I am a huge fan of Nickel Creek, have enjoyed them live, and own all their albums. Because of this, I would buy this set just for the live versions of "move that mountain" and "the fox". I already owned all the other songs on various albums, and was hoping for more live material. However, the DVD music videos are just okay, and the lighthouse song is truncated severely in the video. I was hoping for concert footage here too, rather than VH1/CMT videos. Oh well. The smoothie song video is a fun idea...
defective.......2007-06-13
This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.
Not Your Average Bluegrass.......2007-06-03
My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.
Great overview.......2007-05-26
This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.
This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.

San Diego is not exactly known as a hotbed of contemporary bluegrass music, but then again, Nickel Creek are a far cry from most bluegrass bands you've ever heard. On their Alison Krauss-produced debut, they serve up a lilting, ethereal fusion of bluegrass, Celtic, modern folk, and even classical influences, offering exquisite harmonies that would be more at home at a Crosby, Stills & Nash tribute than at a musical salute to the late Bill Monroe. Yet it makes for delightful listening, all the same. The three principals (Sara Watkins on fiddle and vocals; her brother Sean Watkins on guitar, mandolin, and vocals; and Chris Thile on mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and vocals) are either barely out of their teens or still in them. Individually and as a band, they've already won a slew of awards and notoriety on their respective instruments. The three prodigies (joined by Thile's dad, Scott, on bass) really strut their eclectic hot licks on a few soaring, skittering instrumentals, but even more impressive are Nickel Creek's graceful, heartfelt harmonies on the many lovely ballads. Hot licks, when you get right down to it, are a dime a dozen; this sort of pluperfect tunefulness is a much rarer thing. --Bob Allen

Amazing musicianship and creativity.......2007-06-02
This may be one of my all time favorite albums of all times. It is that good to me. Granted it is not classic bluegrass, which I love too, but it takes bluegrass to a new level. Don't try to compare it just to bluegrass. Take it for what it is. Chris Thile is probably the most amazing mandolin player on the planet and the other two musicians are amazing talents as well. The definately have created their own sound with this CD.
I Can't Believe I Found This CD!!!!.......2007-05-23
WOW!!! I have been trying to find out for a long time who sang this song that I heard once from a friend. It was the most beautiful song I had heard at that time in my life. It was "When You COme Back Down". Once I had found out it was this band called Nickel Creek, I just had to find it and buy it. If any of the songs on this CD sound as good as this song, it has to be a really great buy.
The ups and downs of youth.......2007-04-02
After really enjoying Why Should the Fire Die, I decided to get to know Nickel Creek from their start. This album features the ups and downs of their youth at the time - hopeful, clean energy, but at times too simplistic and lacking the confidence they later developed. I consider the instrumentals to be the main treat here.
Classic!.......2007-01-15
The Nickel Creek CD that brought them to the mainstream and it is one amazing collection of songs. Before the solo projects, this is a classic ablum that any bluegrass/country fan should have in their collection.
Nickel Creek CD.......2007-01-10
I bought this CD based upon only one song that a friend shared. The entire album is really good.

Why Should the Fire Die? is Nickel Creek's first album without Alison Krauss in the producer's chair, and on it, the trio's genre-expanding acoustic music has shifted even farther away from its bluegrass origins. The opening "When in Rome" perfectly encapsulates the aggressive approach the band favors, and features poetic lyrics far more obtuse than those of most groups with similar roots. The disc's first half stays rooted in a fairly conventional folk mode, with a lovely cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" (one of the few solo vocal turns from fiddler Sara Watkins) and "Jealous of the Moon" (cowritten with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris) obvious highlights.
But the album gradually grows darker. The songs take unexpected twists that are challenging and unconventional, while still emphasizing those angelic vocal harmonies that float and sting. Chris Thile's peppy instrumental "Stumptown" leads into the menacing "Best of Luck," with its edgy minor-key chorus echoed by Watkins's deceptively sweet voice spitting out lyrics of an obsessive high-school love affair gone wrong. And the drums of "Helena," one of the group's most radical compositions, bring out Nickel Creek's inner Coldplay. Not a complete break with their bluegrass beginnings, Why Should the Fire Die? is certainly the trio's boldest and most creative album, albeit one that might not appeal to their earliest fans. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
Darker, but Excellent.......2007-05-27
The lyrical content of this album is definitly darker than the first two, but those songs are easily complimented by some lighter tunes as well. They never cease to amaze me. It took a while to let this album grow on me, but eventually it did and I can't get enough of it. Favorite song: Helena...although the guy in the song is a complete jerk, it's still such a great song.
beautiful.......2007-03-14
I got this to complete my Nickel Creek collection. This is an entire album full of break-up songs, and while not entirely uplifting, the poetry and music are beautiful!
VERY Disappointed.......2007-03-12
I had the albums "Nickelcreek and "This Side" on an mp3 disc that I recently listened to, and it reminded me how much I like this group. I wanted more. So I ordered "Why Should The Fire Die". VERY disappointing. It's not at all pleasant to my ears. It brings to mind the worst of the real weird stuff the Beatles occasionally came up with. If Alison Krause's involvement made that much difference, then they need Alison back! I can only hope that this album is a total flop for Nickelcreek so they'll go back to making that fantastic music they're known for. After this album, who knows, maybe the fire will indeed die.
Nickel Creek is Awesome........2007-02-16
Why Should the Fire Die? was the first Nickel Creek CD that i bought, but i have them all. and love them all. I think everyone should own this CD. Nickel Creek is probably my favorite band, seriously. go see them in concert if you are able, you wont regret it.
Not Their Best, But Close.......2007-01-15
I had lost track with Blue Grass for a while. Ran into a friend and he got to talking about this CD. So I had to pick it up. It is a good sound, not the greatest of their efforts -- but it still has a nice sound. Worth the money and a great entry to Nickel Creek to those that don't listen to them yet.

What goes around, comes around. As the resident rock star in Nickel Creek (contrasting with the trio's more reserved Watkins siblings), mandolinist Chris Thile has sent his music soaring in surprising directions from its bluegrass base. Though this solo release finds him dipping into the songbooks of the White Stripes ("Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground") and the Strokes ("Heart in a Cage"), much of the music sticks closer to tradition than Thile has in recent years. Among the highlights are an uptempo romp through Gillian Welch's "Wayside (Back in Time)," a pretty fair yodel on Jimmie Rodgers's "Brakeman's Blues," the close harmonies of the bluesy "If the Sea Was Whiskey," and Thile's original "You're an Angel and I'm Gonna Cry," classic country weeper. Five of the fourteen cuts are instrumental, with the opening "Watch 'at Breakdown" combining bluegrass instrumentation and jazzy sophistication, and "The Beekeeper" giving Thile's fingers a chance to fly. --Don McLeese

Chris Thile and HOW TO LOSE A CROWD.......2007-06-12
Chris Thile and HOW TO LOSE A CROWD!!! Oh my....somehow, one of the best mandolin players to walk this earth puts everyone to sleep again and again. I've seen him 3 times with this band. The crowd starts gathering their chairs and leaving. People are yelling to speed it up and heignores. Why is always the closing band...I have no idea.
I'm bored thinking about it.....
An average album ruined by the F word.......2007-05-29
I agree with Solocoyote's review 100%. Why Chris decided it was necessary to put the F word into this album is beyond me. Did he want to appear tough or to be taken more seriously? It's truly a shame. I loved the last Nickel Creek album (one of the few country-ish groups I enjoy as I mostly listen to alternative music) and thought I would enjoy this CD, too. Some of the songs are really good, especially "You're an Angel, And I'm Gonna Cry." Also, the instrumental tracks are really fun because it allows everybody to go crazy with their instruments. A lot of the songs, though, are boring and uninspired and left me wanting more. "Heart In A Cage" ruins the album for me, though, with unneccessary language. Unfortunately, I'll probably never buy another Thile or Nickel Creek CD because of this. Hopefully, using this word was worth it for him.
WTF?.......2007-05-14
I don't know what to say. I was enjoying this album immensely. Just as much as my NickelCreek albums. Until Chris decided he needed to use the "f" word.
Call me old fashioned but I am incredibly dissapointed that Chris Thile decided to go that far. The music is great but I will not be buying the next Chris Thile album. There is plenty of music out there that does not require me to be guarded about who I play it around.
Do You Like Good Music?.......2007-04-26
Are you kidding me? If you like good music, do yourself a favor and buy this album...and every other anything that Chris Thile has had anything to do with musically. Yes, that's a lot of music. DO IT ANYWAY! If you have an open mind, and tend to know good music when you hear it, get his Deceiver album. It will make you feel like you've discovered another wonder of the world...or the cure to a disease. Turns out it's just music, but it feels like something else...something more.
This isn't good music. This is the best music. Seriously. It will make your heart full, be prepared. Know ahead of time the possible symptoms so you don't mistake them for a medical condition. You will perceive a swelling in your chest, kind of an ache...but the best possible kind. Your body may move uncontrollably. Do not be afraid, these are common side-affects and should be embraced.
To know this music is to love it. If you know it and don't love it, I have nothing to say to you. Go away!
Great Bluegrass.......2007-03-08
I had never heard of Chris Thile until I saw his band doing their rendition of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground on CMT. Some of the songs are not traditional bluegrass, but they are good jams none-the-less.

Whereas Nickel Creek's debut album established the young California trio at the progressive vanguard of traditional bluegrass, this ambitious, risky follow-up finds their acoustic artistry straying far afield. Mandolin player Chris Thile and the Watkins siblings--guitarist Sean and fiddler Sara--continue to impress with their intuitive instrumental interplay and lush vocal harmonies. Sean Watkins's title cut achieves the sprightliest blend of traditional bluegrass instrumentation and contemporary pop craft, while the ruminative melancholy of "Hanging by a Thread" and "Green and Gray" sound as though Thile has been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith (and reading the published poetry of Jewel). The album also features Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger," Carrie Newcomer's "Should've Known Better," and a traditional British ballad, "House Carpenter." However, much of the collection's original material lacks the maturity to match the trio's musical gifts, as songs incorporating influences ranging from neo-psychedelia to alt pop often suffer from self-consciousness. Kindred-spirit producer Alison Krauss plainly gave the project a long leash, and the results can be viewed as either sophomore slump or creative growth spurt--or perhaps both. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
grows.......2007-04-14
At first I found this below the par of the groups' 2000 debut, but I have grown to enjoy it just as much. Somehow every time I put it in the songs sounded just a little bit better. It's like a joke that you have to "get" first.
Not so good..........2007-01-30
I bought this album because i loved their self titled debut. Unfortunately, it really is nothing like their first album. There is only a hint of bluegrass sound, Chris Thile's vocals are straying into an alt-pop sound, and frankly, many of the lyrics are painfully insipid. Too bad, their first album was (and still is) one of my favorites. If you liked Nickel Creek (the album) for it's unique sound, don't buy this one.
Suffering From Sophomore Slump, But Still Worthwhile Music From a Fine Young Bluegrass/Country/Folk Band.......2007-01-06
I tend to agree with Amazon.com's resident music critic that this album may be a classic example of sophomore slump for Nickel Creek. Nonetheless, it is an essential purchase for Nickel Creek fans and others interested in their music. Artistically, this album isn't nearly as impressive as the band's first, or the one which would follow. But I have to give this splendid group of young musicians ample credit for trying to push their musical envelope, metaphorically speaking, opting for a more pop/alt country sound on this album than in their self entitled critically acclaimed debut which was also produced by legendary country fiddler Alison Krauss. However, their songwriting abilities haven't quite risen sufficiently to compare favorably with their splendid musicianship, which reminds me more of an elite classical music ensemble such as the Ensemble Wien or Emerson String Quartet. All three were making tremendous strides in their playing; for example, whether it was Chris Thile's elegant mastery of the mandolin or Sara Watkins's virtuoso playing of the violin (On this album she clearly demonstrates that she's a violinist worthy of note, with brilliant, rhapsodic playing of the kind I've appreciated hearing from my erstwhile friend - and fellow Brunonian - Dotty Moore, a sensational New York City-based, classically-trained bluegrass/country/folk violinist, who, regrettably, is wasting both her professional career and personal life with the Brooklyn, NY fringe community of predominantly mediocre country/folk musicians, performing for example with the mediocre honky tonk band Alex Battles and the Whisky Rebellion, when there are other, far more lucrative, opportunities for her to perform with the best bluegrass/country/folk musicians in New York City and elsewhere.). Without a doubt, Nickel Creek is one of our finest bluegrass/country/folk bands, worthy of comparison to the great bands from Tucson, AZ like The Mollys, Calexico, and Giant Sand, and artistically light years ahead of any Brooklyn, NY-based country/folk band, with the possible exception of the Wingdale Community Singers.
A Good Accidental Find.......2006-12-22
I bought this CD without a cover at a Pawn Shop thinking it was a 2002 Train CD (their crown symbols are similar)- when I put it in, I realized right away that it was not - but I wasn't disappointed. This is a very well crafted set of songs that are soothing and acoustically woven. I like this better than what I thought I was buying. I see reviews below where people didn't like this because it wasn't Bluegrass - thank God, I would have died.
This is a group of true musicians and if they take a turn, I'll say what I always say - let the band be true to themselves and find or experiment with their sound.
While definitley not Bluegrass on this set, there are some GREAT tunes here. There is plenty of Bluegrass and Country out there - this is something different, more folk inspired and I like it a lot. The beauty of Amazon is that you can listen before you buy - so give it a chance! :-)
Nickel Creek.......2006-08-27
Since Chris Thile is a member of this band, I got two of their CDs. NICKEL CREEK and THIS SIDE. Music reviews can be so subjective, can't they? They're technically quite accomplished musicians, but somehow they bore me. I can't explain it. They just don't touch me in what the locals would call my deep heart. Same problem I have with Brahms. Sorry, mate.

This collaboration between former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek's Sean and Sara Watkins and Chris Thile was rehearsed and recorded in six days in 2000 and is the result of a true mutual admiration between the parties. Some of the eight originals bear a connection with Phillips's erstwhile band, especially a song like "Somewhere Out There" with its lilting rhythms and dreamily atmospheric chordal structure. What's most telling is the breadth that this new context allows him as a songwriter. The rootsy Americana, subtle voicings, and front-porch settings seem hundreds of miles from the more urban character of Toad. It's nice to see Nilsson's "Think About Your Troubles," one of a handful of covers, emerging as a contemporary standard in new acoustic circles (having also been released this year in a version by the Asylum Street Spankers). MAS's version of Jon Brion's "Trouble" shows the ease with which these players blend pop sensibilities with the resilience of tradition. --David Greenberger

Why Don't I Like This More?.......2005-10-10
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but 6 Days is not enough time to record an entire album, that's more than a track a day! Have you ever recorded music? Then you would know it takes days just to get one song sounding right. For all the love I have for Glen and Nickel Creek I was astonished that they put out an album like this, there's so much potential here, and you can feel it, but they just needed more time. If James Joyce could give 17 years of his life for "Finnegan's Wake," than I think these "mutual admirers" could've donated at least a week to an awesome idea like this, I hope they retry in the future and I'm sure the results will be just splendid, for now, stick to your Toad and Creek CDs and wait it out.
These other reviewers have gone mad.......2005-05-04
I have listened to this album several times on a portable discman with headphones, and also on my PC with it's cheap stock speakers, and neither time did I have any difficulty hearing the full range of sounds on each track. Since that appears to be the only complaint anyone else can muster, I can find no other faults. Glen sounds fabulous and the always stellar voices of Nickel Creek provide a perfect backdrop. I've had "Sake of the World" on loop for three days. It's light, smooth, a great listen when you need to relax.
A True Musical Pleasure.......2005-04-19
This is an album best listened to on a pair of good headphones. I could not truly begin to listen to it in the car. The music was there but not the real feel. Once I was able to sit down and enjoy it on the headphones it all came together. An absolutely beautiful collaboration of some truly great musicians. It is also one of those rare albums that only gets better each time I listen to it. If you are a fan of Glen Phillips work or Nickel Creeks it is a must for the collection.
amazing.......2005-03-26
I'm surprised by all these negative reviews. The album has so much quiet beauty. It gets better with every listen.
Can you hear me now?.......2005-02-24
Can you hear me now? Yes glen, we can hear you. I feel so bad saying this but this cd was mixed like crap. As I listened to the first track in my car I audibly said to myself, "what the crap is this?" Glen's voice was so loud and obnoxious. Not that his voice was obnoxious but the fact that I could hear nothing other than his voice. I listened to 3/4 of the song and could not take it anymore, so I skipped to the next song with the hope that the producer was going for a certain sound for that track, and that the rest would be fine. I was wrong. Virtually every song on this albums was mixed the same way. I was trying as hard as I could to listen to the music underneath but to no avail. I can tell that the music would be beautiful if it were audible. I love Nickel Creek. They are one of my favorite groups. I also love Toad, but for heavens sake, what is this? I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has noticed this.

Their harmony-driven style veers from contemporary folk to country rock and pop. Great CD...Even better live show.......2005-10-06
I saw Girlyman with Dar Williams in Raleigh, NC. Great show!! This CD captures their unique harmonies and quirky edge. Great drive time music to beat the traffic jam blues.
An instant favorite!.......2005-03-11
Not sure how I stumbled across Girlyman, but the group is my new favorite. The great lyrics and gorgeous harmonies have won them a prominent spot on my play list! They're coming to Seattle soon! I won't miss the show!
One of my new favorites.......2005-02-23
It's always a thrill to be pleasantly surprised by an opening act you've never heard of. I first heard Girlyman when they opened for the Indigo Girls last fall, and was absolutely floored. "Say Goodbye," "Viola" and "The Shape I Found You In" are favorites, and their cover of "My Sweet Lord" is fun, although a little safe.
They were a fun band to see live. Girlyman possesses excellent stage presence and good-natured wit. I look forward to more great things from them.
Michael Stipe meets the Indigo Girls.......2005-02-20
I first heard this group on the radioio eclectic webstream. The song was "Fall Stories." I noticed over the course of a month or so that every time that the song came on that I paid more attention to it. They have marvelous melodies that you just wished you could hear more of in mainstream music. I found their website and listened to their album. After one listen I ordered the CD and awaited its arrival. I thought they reminded me very much of the early Indigo Girls. Later on I joined their fan club in the hope they might eventually visit somewhere nearby. They are now signed on to the Indigo Girls record label so I hope there is enough marketing power behind them that they get to make a new album. The only weak song on the album is the remake of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." It isn't bad, but just not as great as all the other songs.
Girlyman is incredible see them live.......2005-02-14
Girlyman is incredible see them live, the Remember who I am CD is wonderful, if you don't like this CD you have lost all Musical Taste! Love them Rock On!

Great Song Collection.......2004-08-14
This album has many great artists, new and old to bluegrass music. These are all great songs, NOT like some collections that you might buy for one or two songs, the rest being songs you don't like or skip through. I listen to BLUEGRASS TODAY over and over again, at work, in the car, at home. I am very pleased ! I love it!

Album Description
Music of the West and the Western movies, sung and played by the remarkable Nickel Creek Band, consisting of Chris Thile ( age 12 and now with 2 solo bluegrass mandolin albums by the age of 18), Sara Watkins (age 11 at the time),Sean Watkins (age 15), and Scott Thile (Chris' dad.) Great, vivid interpretations of America's cowboy standards, sung and played by children. Kids love to hear other kids singing, and adults will be entertained, and astonished by the singing and playing abilities of the Nickel Creek Band. (By the way, 6 years later, they're still together, and making a bluegrass (newgrass) record of their own music, produced by bluegrass great Alison Krauss.

Great CD for Little Kids.......2007-06-08
It is not often that one can hear their favorite band singing as little kids. That is exactly what you get on this CD. Nickel Creek, known for it's folksy, soft melodies made this CD when they were all between 10 and 14. Now, if you are not into little kids singing high notes, then maybe this CD isn't for you. My niece and nephew love it. They even want to be cowboys someday too! If you love Nickel Creek, its worth it to get this CD.
Nickel Creek were already brilliant musicians as pre-teens.......2007-02-14
This CD is for the Nickel Creek fan who
A)already has all the other cds, and
B) Enjoys the "traditional Country/Western roots" that their music evolved from...or
C)is a parent or grandparent wanting some 'safe' and fun music to share with kids with NO element of today's 'trashy' side....
They are doing classic "gene Autry' style cowboy tunes from an era long since past....the band members are all between 10 and 12 years old on this album.(except a dad who helps out) Their performance is consistently flashy and their playing and singing could only be called 'virtuoso'.....Keep in mind, however that this is Nickel Creek BEFORE they were heavily influenced by everyone from Radiohead to the Beatles.......this is music for KIDS to enjoy, but it is neither modern/current, nor does it bear resemblance to the latest bluegrass/modern rock hybrid that we SOOOOOO love them for.

Nickel Creek Origins..........2007-01-20
I purchased this CD shortly after finding out that Nickel Creek would be disolving their union as a band. I hoped that this collection would be suitable for both myself (as a strong supporter of Nickel Creek) and my two children. This CD honestly fails to deliver a suitable substitution for the music that Nickel Creek produced over the past 7 years. Although, I guess that was an unrealistic expectation to have for this CD. You have to keep in mind that the members of Nickel Creek were just children themselves when they released this CD. I don't believe that they had found their true musical identity, and they obviously wouldn't have reached their full musical potential yet. This CD isn't really the best for a todler either, so I have to say that this purchase was a let down overall.
Starting Point.......2007-01-09
Considering their ages when this disc was recorded....there is only one word to describe "AMAZING"
Great cd for kids!.......2007-01-03
My 6 year old nephew loved this cd, but I have another 5 year old nephew that didn't like the "I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart" and gave his away!!!
The whole cd will not make mom go crazy listening to it over and over.
Well, maybe the 100th time will make her crazy, but the rest of the time she will sing along!

Customer Reviews:
I prefer this to their later style........2007-05-22
I much prefer this CD over their later rock/blue grass fusion style. This earlier work is much cleaner and it really showcases their awesome musicianship and vocal talent. We use this music in our ballet class as well as Alison Krauss and Union Station. We found one of Nickle Creeks later CDs not as beautiful to listen too and not able to use for our dance classes. I think it is great that they decided to experiment and develop their style, but I much prefer this CD over all the rest.
Splendid Debut Album From One Of The Best Bluegrass/Country/Folk American Bands in Hybrid SACD Format.......2007-01-03
Calling Nickel Creek a fine bluegrass band ignores the vast range of musical influences which this splendid trio of San Diego-based acoustic string musicians has soaked up. This self-entitled debut album, produced by the legendary country fiddler Alison Krauss of Alison Krauss and Union Station, does emphasize their rich musical diversity, including not only bluegrass, country and folk, but also featuring, much to my surprise, some musical interludes into classical music too! Certainly it's no surprise that a distinguished classical musician, noted pianist Murray Perahia, has become such an avid fan and influential supporter of theirs. And yet the most amazing aspect about this album is the relative youth of the band's musicians; they were either still in - or just barely out - of their teens, playing with a stellar blend of superior musicianship which I've heard only from great Celtic bands like Solas, Altan and Cherish the Ladies, or from distinguished country/folk bands like the Mary Chapin Carpenter band, The Mollys and Bering Strait; the latter band is the one which most closely resembles Nickel Creek, comprised as well by a talented bunch of bluegrass/country/folk musicians hailing from, of all places, Siberia. This album is replete not only with superb vocal harmonies from Chris Thile and Sara Watkins, but also exceptional playing on mandolin (Chris Thile), guitar (Sean Watkins) and violin (Sara Watkins), that reminds me more of polished performances from the likes of a great classical chamber music ensemble like the Ensemble Wien or Emerson String Quartet, than from your typical bluegrass/country/folk band.
San Diego isn't noted for the quality of its bluegrass/country/folk musicians, but this Southern Californian city ought to be, in light of the splendid musicianship demonstrated by Nickel Creek. Mandolinist Chris Thile proves that he's a virtuoso of his instrument, performing with as much gusto and technical brilliance as I've heard from Davey Johnstone, the Scottish folk guitarist and mandolinist who would become the longest-tenured member - and finally, music director - of the Elton John Band. Both Sean, and his sister Sara, also show on this album that they were nearly as accomplished musicians as their friend Chris (Indeed, the only young bluegrass/country fiddler who has impressed me as much as Sara Watkins is my erstwhile friend - and fellow Brunonian - Dotty Moore, who has opted to devote both her musical career and personal life to the relatively fringe community that is Brooklyn, NY's minor league country/folk music scene, performing with mediocre bands like the locally popular honky tonk band Alex Battles and the Whisky Rebellion, when there are other, more lucrative, opportunities available here in New York City and elsewhere for her to perform with some of our best bluegrass, country, folk, jazz and rock musicians like fellow Brunonian Mary Chapin Carpenter - one of our great country singer/songwriters - and my high school classmate George Gee, who has conducted his swing jazz bands at distinguished venues like Rockefeller Center's Rainbow Room and Lincoln Center's "Midsummer Nights Swing" festival, and a jazz festival held in Zurich, Switzerland.). Without question, if you acquire Nickel Creek's self-entitled debut album, then you'll understand why this band has been praised as "the future" of "progressive" bluegrass music.
Superb performance and recording.......2005-08-23
I took interest in this recording because it was a multichannel SACD. After listening to a sample at Borders Books, I bought it and took it home. This group is extremely talented, and they let their skills speak for themselves. The 5.1 sound is very well done. I just finished listening to the high resolution stereo version of the album, and it doesn't carry the weight of the surround mix.
It's just plain beautiful music, something I was beginning to suspect died a long time ago. My only question now is when their newest album (Why Should the Fire Die) be released on SACD?
One of the best instrumental groups ever.......2004-11-13
The instrumentals in this album of young people is absolutely amazing. The vocals are wonderful too, what awesome talent! They turn bluegrass into a whole new genre. I can listen to this album over and over and I am a "classic rocker".
They sing and play from the heart and it shows. If you have any kind of fondness for bluegrass you must buy this.
Great Record.......2003-08-20
I love this CD! It's a mixture of Bluegrass and I'm not-sure-what, but the music is great, the musicians are great, and the recording is wonderful.
