5 out of 5 stars My absolute favorite Strawbs album.......2006-12-30

Although, I'm not too crazy about the track "Benedictus", nor the silly little "Hey Little Man" tracks, I do think that everything else on this album of "Grave New World" are the strongest, most important recordings that the Strawbs ever did. It is certainly the Strawbs best line-up of their most important personnel.

"Queen of Dreams" is a great psychedelic folk song. "Heavy Disguise" sounds very Beatle-ish. "New World" is probably Dave Cousins most angry song. "The Flower and the Young Man" is a beautiful folk ballad. And "Tommorrow" represents the distance that folk "hard rock" can achieve. "On Growing Older" is a great short piece about simply that: grower older. And the last three tracks of the original album are just warm and fuzzy, beautiful but slightly hypnotic, psychedelic folk music and Progressive Rock. This is one of the last Strawbs albums that I bought when I was collecting Strawbs albums back in the seventies. Who would have thought that their best album would have been the one I bought last from A&M Records. After this album came "Bursting At The Seams", "Hero and Heroine", "Ghosts", and then A&M's last album from the Strawbs, "Nomadness".

After their "Nomadness" album, the Strawbs continued to have band member changes and they drifted further away from both of their Folk and their Progressive influences and started to sound more like a typical pop music group that was already the sound that was saturating the pop music charts. But none of this music ever really went to pop radio. It was all so easily dismissible since the Strawbs were so strong during their A&M days. Only true Strawbs loyalists continued to buy the Strawbs albums (I'm guilty of this too, nowadays) even after they left A&M. Their immediate follow-up albums (from the Oyster label) were "Deep Cuts" and "Burning for You". There are a few good tunes, but these albums are easily and regrettably forgettable.

The album afterwards, called "Deadlines" ended strong. Their songs "Deadly Nightshade" and "Words of Wisdom" are two of Dave Cousins best songs ever.

Strawbs continued to perform and release albums in later years. Dave Cousins still likes to find old band members who probably have nothing better to do, and they've done some shows and released some albums. In 1988, their album "Don't Say Goodbye" and 1991's "Ringing Down the Years" are both pretty good. I think these two albums are better than their albums from the late seventies after "Nomadness".

But, alas, they were running out of creative ideas yet again, and started to lose their appeal once again. What's frustrating about the Strawbs is that Dave Cousins likes to keep re-recording earlier songs, like he thinks he's improving on them. I wish he wouldn't do this. In 2002, Dave Cousins got together with Rick Wakeman and recorded another album together called "Hummingbird". Rick Wakeman left the Strawbs back in 1971 to join Yes and to do solo projects. And even on this Cousins and Wakeman album, Cousins still did some re-recordings that Rick Wakeman had nothing to do with back in their heyday.

Dave Cousins seems to be the only member of the Strawbs that was on every Strawbs album. All the other members just came and went over the years. But, I'm sure that every Strawbs fan will agree that the Strawbs best albums were the albums of the A&M years (1969-1975). If you can find it, look for their double CD called "Halcyon Days" (the US version). It is the very best of the Strawbs put together all in one great double CD package. In fact, it was done so well that it is very obvious that A&M have no intentions of releasing their albums separately. You'd have to buy their expensive imports as I have.

I hope someday they will release the Hudson-Ford albums on CD. These two guys contributed to what made the folk side of the Strawbs so strong back in their earlier days.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, The Strawbs, Yes, Pink Floyd, Triumvirat, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, Rick Wakeman, and Monty Python's Flying Circus. And enjoying a tall cold bottle of Vernor's Ginger Ale while kicking back to the most adventurous music ever made. These were the strongest influences in my life as a kid. The Strawbs are still performing shows throughout England. They have a following just like the Grateful Dead had here in America. I'd like to see them come do a show here in California. Perhaps they could do a double billing with maybe Blackmore's Night. That would be a great show where they would actually compliment each other being seen together. What do you think? I think Strawbs fan's should definitely check out Blackmore's Night.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy prog folk-rock gloom.......2006-04-21

This excellent 1972 release by the Strawbs is much proggier/rockier sounding than From the Witchwood (1971), with electric instruments outweighing acoustic instruments. The lineup at this point no longer included Rick Wakeman, who had (rather abruptly) joined Yes. Apparently Dave Cousins was very upset by the way Rick left the band, which was expressed in the angry-sounding track Tomorrow. In addition to Dave Cousins (vocals acoustic/electric guitars, dulcimer) the other players on the album include the superb keyboardist Blue Weaver (mellotron, Hammond organ, harmonium, clavioline); John Ford (bass, vocals); Tony Hooper (guitars, vocals); and Richard Hudson (drums). The overall sound of the album is dark and features plenty of brooding mellotron parts and a few delicate, folk-flavored acoustic pieces (Hey Little Man...Wednesday's Child). The track Grave New World is the best example of gloom and doom on the album and is simply loaded with mellotron (w/string setting) - it is my favorite piece on the album in fact. On the other side of the equation is some brisk Hammond organ work - Blue Weaver certainly gives Wakeman a run for his money on the track Tomorrow; aggressive bass parts played on a very trebly Rickenbacker bass; rocking electric guitar work; and some heavy drumming. In general though, the heaviness is not overbearing in any way. Although Dave Cousins certainly has an unusual voice, I actually find it very listenable. The three and four part vocal harmonies are also very nice - the folk inflected vocal harmonies on The Flower and the Young Man are especially good. Although prog, folk and rock styles predominate, there are Indian influences as well (Is It Today, Lord?), along with a bit of silliness. Specifically, the track Ah Me, Ah My is silly in a Monty Python, barbershop quartet way and really does not fit with the heavy gloom that characterizes most of the material. This is a minor complaint however, and does not affect the quality of the listening experience. The remastering of the album is generally pretty good and features improved sound quality (although the bass is screaming), along with detailed liner notes and restored cover art. The bonus tracks Here it Comes and I'm Going Home are not especially good. Overall, this is a wonderful Strawbs album and is recommended along with From the Witchwood (1971); Hero and Heroine (1974); and Ghosts (1975).

5 out of 5 stars The Strawbs find a cohesive musical direction to get to the next level.......2006-03-13

I went to go hear the Strawbs in concert when they were on their "Hero & Heroine" tour. I did not own any of their albums, but the FM station I listened to in Albuquerque liked their music and would play "Down by the Sea" often enough that coupled with commercials for the concert highlighting some choice bits from assorted songs I decided to go check them out (besides, Richie Havens was opening for them). In the wake of the concert I went out and got every Strawbs album I could find in town, which included "Grave New World."

I am willing to round up on this one, but I do not think of "Grave New World" as being a first tier Strawbs album (those would be the next three after this one). Part of the reason is that the music a lyrics are a bit too pretentious as times, and if you really get into what is going on here it can be a bit depressing. But that was what was happening in the wake of Rick Wakeman's leaving the group for Yes. Apparently that is the context in which we are supposed to listen to the opening track "Benedictus," in which Cousins sings about blessing "all those who cause us pain." Besides, how many songs have an electric dulcimer run through a fuzz box? This is the best song on the album, while the title track is the second, even though it provides decidedly contradictory sentiments, as when Cousins sings, "may you rot in your grave new world." The post-apocalyptic sentiments are sung out while Weaver provides some of his best work on the mellotron.

Those two songs override everything else on the album, which can make it seem not as solid an effort as we would see on the next album, "Bursting at the Seams." But "The Flower and the Young Man" and "On Growing Older" are both solid songs, showing that Cousins could write effectively for both the electric and acoustic guitar. This digitally remastered reissue contains a pair of bonus tracks, but while "I'm Going Home" is a solid little track, "Here It Comes" is a throwback to the musical period the group was leaving behind. Still, every little blast from the past tacked on is to be appreciated as an effort to clean out the vaults.

The Strawbs remain one of my favorite progressive rock bands of the 1970s, but when this album came out in 1972 the group was still a lot closer to their folk-rock roots. In addition to David Cousins writing songs, the rhythm section of Richard Hudson and John Ford was producing some decent tracks as well. But this would be the last album with Tony Hooper on lead guitar, who would be replaced by Dave Lambert, who brought more rock sensibilities to the group. At this point Blue Weaver had replaced Wakeman on keyboards, but I really define the glory days of the Strawbs by the time that John Hawken was in that role. By that point Cousins was the only one left from the original Strawberry Hill Boys. The verdict might be that the Strawbs were not on the same plateau as Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, or even Renaissance, but if they were a second tier group they were the best on that level.

5 out of 5 stars Consider the DVD too.......2005-09-07

I generally agree with the positive comments offered. However, I would highly recommend that you consider getting the DVD instead. The DVD is normally no more expensive than the CD (often cheaper) and arguably demonstrates the full "concept" that the album was getting at in one of the first full-length music videos. Images of the Troubles in Belfast hint at the meaning of the lyrics of the title track. Maybe some of the images are pretentious - but what do you expect? The Strawbs were as much prog rock as folk rock by the time of release of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic folk!.......2003-09-21

If there is a genre of music known as cosmic folk, then this album by the Strawbs is that which all else of this ilk revolves around. Grave New World represents the folk-rock movement (pioneered by other bands such as Fairport Convention, Magna Carta and early Renaissance) taken to its logical limit. In the end the Grave New World album incorporates just about every style from the eastern sitar-flavored "Is It Today, Lord?" to the heavy, melotron progressiveness of rock songs of "Tomorrow" and the title track. In between are some other wonderful songs. "Queen of Dreams" waxes some light psychedelia with its backwards organ; "Heavy Disguise" and "The Flower and the Young Man" recall some of the Strawbs earlier folkier moments of the first two albums; my personal favorite is "On Growing Older"--a great song about that stage of your life when one half of you is straddling the youth you're trying to hang onto and the other half is shying away from midlife. The album ends with the gorgeous "The Journey's End". As concepts go, Grave New World is straightforward and simple. Where the Moody Blues charted the passing of a day in their landmark Days of Future Passed album, and Magna Carta charted the course of a year on their sophmore album, Seasons, the Strawbs have charted the course of a man's life. The bonus tracks, almost straight-ahead rockers, do not necessarilly compliment the overall theme of the album, but are nice insights into the full creative processes that were at work at that time. Buy this album. You will wonder what took you so long to get turned onto these guys after you listen to it!

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

3 out of 5 stars Some True Shining Moments.......2007-02-06

This is a great CD for all fans of glam metal or 'hair metal'
the sound is just about perfect, the vocals have a very distinct sound that fits with the music absolutely perfectly
There are definitely more than a few filler songs however, which is a shame because if the CD was narrowed down to the best 10 songs I think it would have been a true classic,as it stands the ballads are really what make this one shine,in particular the song "Airport Called Sad"
One band that this really reminds me of is 'Pretty Boy Floyd' (which is a compliment as they are one of my absolute favorite bands)

The Upside - This CD shows a true master of 'glam rock' and some of the songs are so beautiful it nearly brings tears to your eyes, mainly "Airport Called Sad" which brings to mind classic Guns N Roses meets Black Crowes (trust me it works) Rock Sex City is a great rocking tune,Johnny in the sky has lots of atmosphere,Magenta Sky also has some great atmosphere

The Downside - The production isn't the greatest,it isn't horrible but it is far from the quality many of their peers were releasing, the bigger problem though was the amount of filler songs, tunes that just weren't memorable, which is a shame because you can see, hear, and feel the potential for greatness in this CD

The Bottom Line - I really wanted to love this CD and I do on some of the tracks,it is definitely good enough for me to recommend this to any fans of glam or 'hair' metal, and at this price it's most definitely worth it for the song 'Airport Called Sad' alone,if you love this style of singing and music you should also check out the band X-Terra's release "Wolves" and all of Bill Hunt's solo work...Adam Bomb's Grave New World is most definitely at times a great example of what glam rock is meant to be and I recommend it...donutman says so!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Album of inutterable beauty, grandeur, bathos and charm.......2004-03-21

We all snicker about 19th century sentimentality, but there's no way to patronize this amazing collection of songs, especially in these grandly serious and respectful performances. There's tremendous variety here, but on the whole, listening to these songs is like gazing into a majestic post-Hudson River School landscape of breathtaking grandeur and detail. The Harmoneion Singers are sensational as usual, displaying the tenderest attention to every nuance of emotion. The songs range from charming miniatures like "We are Happy Now Dear Mother," to rousing, marchlike hymns, such as "You Must Be a Lover of the Lord." My favorite is "Shall we Know Each Other?" which triggers celestial visions, and is darned catchy to boot. Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars Of great historical interest.......1999-05-17

After the Civil War, this country had what could be interpreted only as a massive guilt trauma if we go by the kind of songs that became very popular in the years after 1865. So many of them dealt with death, that the most excellent New World Records people put together a collection of such works, called the set (80220-2), and assigned the solo part to Kathleen Battle (sop.), Rose Taylor (mez.), Raymond Murcell (bar.), several other soloists, and the Harmoneion Singers under Neely Bruce. As are most products from this company, the sound is utterly authentic, the accompanying notes are scholarly and generous, the texts are provided. Many of our longer-lived citizens might recall such classics as "Sweet By and By," "Rock of Ages," "The Last Hymn," and the title song of this set. I want all local choral groups to get a copy of this and match it with the versions they have sung in the past. And it certainly wouldn't hurt the History Department over at our local colleges to make this part of the audio portion of their American History classics. CDs. Amen.

    Product Description

Jason Kao Hwang (b. 1957) is a highly respected improviser who also has a number of compositions and film scores to his credit. The Floating Box is a major contemporary work that gives voice not only to the Asian immigrant experience in America in particular but also to the immigrant experience in general. With the collaboration of librettist Catherine Filloux, The Floating Box is an original story inspired by the oral histories of Chinese-Americans living in Chinatown. The story of Eva/Yee-Wa, a young Chinese-American woman living with her mother, is the story of many diasporic peoples who have sought a better life in new, often harsh surroundings. The poetry of Filloux’s libretto fuses perfectly with Hwang’s eclectic score, beautifully capturing the complex, intimate relationships among these three characters. The opera employs both Chinese and Western instruments in an ensemble of eight players: piccolo/flute/alto flute; Bb clarinet/bass clarinet; vibraphone; pipa (Chinese lute); accordion; percussion, including Tibetan chimes and singing bowls, whirling air tubes, Chinese tom toms, and a Buddhist fan drum; erhu/gaohu/zhonghu (a family of two-stringed Chinese violins categorized as huqin); and cello. In Hwang’s skilled hands, these instruments together forge a rich amalgam of sound—in the composer’s words, “complex suspensions rather than homogenous solutions.” The precision with which Hwang mines each instrument’s sonic possibilities and the imaginative ways with which he draws upon subsets of the full ensemble result in a vibrant musical narrative that propels the drama forward to its conclusion. The kaleidoscopic range of musical styles employed--atonality, blues, Broadway, Chinese opera, chromaticism, impressionism, jazz, pop--establishes The Floating Box as the work of an artist who is completely comfortable bridging multiple musical worlds.

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.......2000-07-24

10 CD's of beautiful pieces of classical music, digitally recorded for only 20 bucks sounds very good. I decided to buy this CD set because of very good price. But, what you will get for your money? Noting special, believe me! I was very disappointed with some performances, but sound quality of some tracks is even worst. Disc No. 6 is one of the most poorly recorded and engineered CD's I have ever heard. I can't believe that this CD is digitally recorded. So, forgot price and look somewhere else. I can recommend this CD box set to absolutely beginners only.
