Editorial Reviews
From the Label
1998 Grammy nominee, Ramblin' Jack Elliott is a legend who learned his craft from Woody Guthrie and has profoundly influenced everyone from Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger to Beck. Early Sessions was recorded in England in the mid-1950s.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Derroll Adams toured Europe from 1955 to 1961 during which time they recorded the songs on this album. Ramblin' Jack's style has had a lasting impact on many artists such as Mick Jagger and, even more profoundly, on Bob Dylan. In 1996, 40 years on from this recording, the legendary Elliott would win his first GrammyÆ Award for Best Traditional Folk Album, but Early Sessions is where the legend began.

5 out of 5 stars 17 year old soulstar!!!.......2005-12-31

James Brown is a great fan of Litttle Willie John and he used to be his friend until he died at age 30 in 1968. When Little Willie John became famous James Brown was his opening act.
He is not very well known nowadays but you only have to listen to his voice to realize that he is of the same level as Sam Cooke,Jackie Wilson and Otis Redding.
This CD has a good sound quality and contains his early hits, which are more 'rough' than his later work. For me this is pure soul! It is unbelievable that he is just 17 to 19 years old at these recordings.

Album Description

'Lipstick Killers' was originally recorded in 1972 and features the original line-up of the New York Dolls, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur 'Killer' Kane and Billy Murcia. The band was only 4 and 1/2 months old, and just beginning to build it's legendary reputation. This first session captures them raw, wild, and crude, with no studio trickery to tone them down. 9 tracks including 'Bad Girl', 'Personality Crisis', 'Don't Start Me Talking' and more on 2000 Roir release.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars New York Dolls - 'Lipstick Killers' (Roir).......2004-06-16

For a bunch of demos, this collection of the Doll's tracks, assembled by the indie label Roir, sure does sound good.'Lipstick Killers' is apparently the EARLIEST known recordings of the band, recorded in the summer of 1972.Even the group's ORIGINAL drummer Billy Murcia is on here. The tunes that I found myself looking forward to on repeated plays of the CD are "Looking For A Kiss","Don't Mess With Cupid","Personality Crisis" and "Frankenstein".Might want to keep in mind that 'Lipstick...' is pretty much aimed at New York Dolls completists.

4 out of 5 stars Early Dolls.......2004-04-19

These early demos featuring original drummer Billy Murcia are pretty crude all around. The Dolls sound a bit sluggish and unsure of themselves. This is understandable, of course, considering they had only been together for about four months. The sound quality isn't too bad. But, unfortunately, the tapes suffer from volume fluctuations that can be somewhat annoying.

Many tunes that would eventually appear on their two studio albums are included here in embrionic form. I wouldn't say that any of the tracks on "Lipstick Killers" are superior to those on "NY Dolls" and "Too Much Too Soon". However, it is cool to hear them in such a raw, unpolished state. I prefer the '73 demos with Jerry Nolan, but this is still a fine album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dolls recordings from Summer '72.......2002-03-25

Not as in the editorial reviews January, this one was done in the summer of '72 at Blue Rock Studios in NYC. It captures all the energy of the Dolls at their peak when they were the darlings of the Mercer Arts Center Glitter Rock Scene.

    5 out of 5 stars The cowboy's best few.......2003-11-18

Well here we have, the result of banjoist Derroll Adams and Elliot's various performances the east of Atlantic thru the decade of the 50's. Not that bad I must say, we have "worried man blues" the cult favourite of generations , a not so tight rendition here. And then we have the list following with Dylan's mentor Guthrie's "More Pretty Girls"...and many other folk favourites... I think the album though should have read 'Derroll And Elliot' (no offence to the master!).. for the sheer brilliance of Adams' playing.
2 Thumbs up for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Solid R&B Album for Any Collection.......2000-11-28

The story goes like this. Before he was Dr. John the Night Tripper he was Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. - a Third Ward kid growing up in the rich musical climate of New Orleans. His life revolved around music from the beginning: he had several aunts and uncles who played boogie woogie piano at home, and his father owned a record store, serviced juke boxes and repaired sound systems in local clubs. Young Mac loved to accompany his father on these calls -- he would sit outside and absorb the R&B music for hours. At the age of seven he started guitar lessons from Fats Domino's guitarist, and there was no turning back. When Mac was a teenager he picked up some session work at Cosimo Matassa's studio, dropped out of high school and in 1957 joined the Ace staff full time as a producer, songwriter and musician. These Ace years were ITALICS Medical School END ITALICS for the gris-gris doctor, where he honed his songwriting skills and learned how to make records. Rebennack had a hand in each of the 18 cuts presented here, whether as songwriter, musician or producer. His vocals are discernible on one track only, "Row Row My Boat" - but it is a very cool track, indeed. They are all cool - who can't dig the New Orleans funkified R&B? I have to agree with the man at Louie's Juke Joint on Decatur Steet who recommended this album to me: "It is essential." Highlights: Rebennack's Bo Diddley rhythm on "Storm Warning," Chuck Carbo's smooth vocals on "You Don't Leave Me No Choice," The End's "It Ain't No Use," "Bad Neighborhood" by Ronnie & The Delinquents, "Morgus the Magnificent" by Morgus & the Three Ghouls (only in New Orleans!), "Down the Road" by Roland Stone.

5 out of 5 stars From the horses mouth.......2006-01-06

Joe Meek was a cool customer he dressed in black (always), in what we term 'mod' style which is a suit, a white shirt with a white collar and a tie. Black Winkle Picker shoes which to the layman have a heavily pointed toe.
He never used bad language (never swore) and the recordings that were made were done in a Queensway studio that was used after hours, and all traces of use were wiped after the sessions had finished.
Recordings were also made at his private residence in the Holloway Road in North London. This is when he first introduced us (West Five) to Stereo, this took the part of the band standing and listening to the sound of a train coming from the left hand wall and going to the right hand wall.
As you may have gathered I was an original member of the West Five and various other groups that Joe Meek invented. I was the bass player, Doug Collins and am now in my dotage and still living near to London, other surviving members of the group include Dave Golding, and Roger Fiola who was an american serviceman (if he reads this it would be great to hear from him).
To anybody who buys and enjoys this recording understand this these recordings were done with primitive equipment and an very innovative producer. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars For completists only.......2002-01-29

The music on this CD consists of demos, a few unfinished masters and a very few finished but unreleased (or only released in limited markets) masters all from around the 1959-60 era. Unless you are a hard-core Meek fan, there is nothing on this disc that will interest you.

The best tracks are the seven audition/demo tracks by the West Five and the eight audition/demo tracks by the Flee Rekkers. In the case of the West Five, Meek recorded relatively few official releases by this quite good pre-Beatles British rock band. Their demo here is a great document of a largely forgotten scene. In the case of the Flee Rekkers, the official releases are much better sounding. The two Chick Lewis tracks are potentially great but they are unfinished and they sound like it. John Leyton's "Three Cute Chicks" is unbearably precious. Ricky Wayne's "Hot Chick a 'Roo" was bad in its official release version and the demo is no better. Yolanda's "With This Kiss" was terrible in its official version; the demo is even worse. Indeed it sounds like she cannot sing. Eve Boswell's "Bridge of Avignon" is corny but absolutely great--it was only released in Italy. Lee Sutton was an "adult" lounge singer. I think you had to see him in person to get any of the charm. Joe Meek's own "da-dee-da" vocal demos are incredible. The man was totally tone-deaf and it is excrutiating to hear him here. This is probably the most essential thing for any Meek freak. You have to hear his awful warbling to believe it.

I am saddened by the removal from circulation of some of the CDs of music by Meek's artists. I cannot understand why this disc is still available unless it's taking this long to sell off the original production.
