Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
A combination of two LPs--1982's Good News and 1989's We All...Everyone of Us--Breaths provides a passionate, rich, politically charged perspective on Sweet Honey's early work. The group shows their emotional range and intellectual convictions as clearly in this nascent work as in later releases. From the philosophical lullaby "Breaths" to the declarative civil-rights offering "Ella's Song," this album serves as a forum for these brave-voiced women to unfold their ideals and passions with wisdom and care. Aside from the powerful original compositions, Breaths contains a handful of tender, musically ripe arrangements of other people's poetry: June Jordan's "Oughta Be a Woman," Kahlil Gibran's "On Children," and Birago Diop's title track. Each illustrates the group's ability to draw music out of words as well as set words to music. --Sally Weinbach

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Honey!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-02

This album is magnificent! The music is original, spirited, warm, and reaches to your very soul. Each piece has it's own personality. I heard these women on PBS, and have bought two of their cd's. I will soon purchase more! Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars The struggle continues lovingly!.......1999-09-02

Being a grateful fan of this group for many years, I know that this album is by far the fiercest in delivering messages of empowerment, duty, justice, righteousness and love. Love for them is the deepest of the soul piercing elements these powerful women sing about. Out of all of my Sweet Honey in the Rock albums this one is the most played, loaned and never returned and heartfelt. The women of Sweet Honey in the Rock sing of things wrong that have been somewhat righted now, lost and on the edge of return, and harsh pain felt now past but not forgotten. Mostly, they sing of the love that is needed for all of us to do better. If you collect music for its meaning and encouragement buy this album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2005-06-30

The album that captures Kilgore with her Portland trio. And one of her very best, which is definitely saying something. This album has somewhat more contemporary
jazz backing (esp. harmonies) than her work with 'neo-trads' like Hal Smith or John Sheridan, or even somewhat similar Keith Ingram albums on Jump. But no less
compelling-- very fine playing, & her voice in top form I think. If you like bright voiced jazz vocals akin to Maxine Sullivan, or say would like to hear a more jazz Doris Day, check this out!

5 out of 5 stars Mazinga Phaser is mazinga........2003-12-11

I discovered this band via AudioGalaxy some years ago. Unfortunately, I can find little to no information on this band. I downloaded several songs, and have pretty much pooped my pants with each download. Back then, my internet was only 56k... and downloading some tracks from this band at a measely 3-4kbps rate was well worth it (these MP3's were and still are being hosted by AudioGalaxy and are legal, for your information). This band is fantastic from what I've heard, and it's a true shame their music isn't virtually everywhere.

I highly suggest this band to fans of space rock-- or really, to anyone who enjoys music that simply kicks an unhealthy amount of buttex. I'm not even really a fan of the 'Space Rock' genre, but this band is top-notch. Beautiful female vocals, excellent grooves... God, some songs really do bring a tear to my eye. Good stuff.

            5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2003-04-22

I cannot believe the creator of this music, mr. bryan zentz introduced more genres of music than most producers anywhere. He successfully explored and delivered; house, trip hop, jazz, reggae, techno, and on and on. After listening to this cd, you dance, you dream, you race, your inner energy flows. This is the perfect CD for a road trip, enertaining friends, or working out to. I was amazed at the variety of music introduced as well as the quality of incorporating different seperate sounds into fantabulistic freakadelic super dance beats beats beats!!! I love it!!!

            5 out of 5 stars Parker/Guy/Lytton at their best!.......2001-11-10

This is a great record, and unique among the recordings by the Evan Parker/Barry Guy/Paul Lytton trio. They are playing at their unbelievable telepathic best, and the tracks are separated by short all-percussion segments by all three players -- the "heartbeats." This works, for me, to punctuate and add texture to record as a whole. Most tracks are fairly short as well, so the effect is different from the typical live session with one or two long improvisations.

BREATHS & HEARTBEATS was one of the first Evan Parker records I heard, and I still think it's one the best. It would make a great introduction for anyone who hasn't heard him, and if you have, this is an essential addition to your collection. The trio doesn't seem to be playing together much anymore -- this December 1994 London recording is from their early-mid 1990s peak of activity.

4 out of 5 stars Not Evan's best ever, but still great.......1999-07-11

Evan Parker, Barry Guy, and Paul Lytton, three masters of their craft, a craft which very few have the abiltiy to even think about trying. Barry's stand-up bass could be louder in the mix but this is still required listening for Free-Improvisation fans and new recruits to the "genre". I may have the wrong number but I think it's BREATHS AND HEARTBEAT 4. Evan does some of that only-Evan-can-do-this stuff on soprano saxophone, the stuff where there are 2 and 3 melodic lines happening at once (no overdubs here mind you). First time I heard #4 I got dizzy and almost fell off of my bed. If Barry's bass was slightly louder this would be a 5 star cd.
