Rather than an official PJ Harvey album, this is a raw, nerve-shredding side project by Harvey and her chief collaborator. The singer lets it rip in primal scream fashion on the third track ("City of No Sun"), which will immediately deter all but the most dedicated of fans from fully exploring the pair's intriguing art punk visions. "Civil War Correspondent" is one relatively accessible point of entry. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting album - 4.5.......2005-06-27
THis is probly PJ harvey's hardest album to like, because it is very raw and different from anything you have heard, even PJ's other albums. It it kind of a mix of the harder rock from her first two albums and the mellower songs from To BRing You My Love. However, if you listen to it enough with an open mind, it is one of PJ harvey's greatest accomplishments. I give it 4 starts for a PJ Harvey album, and 5 overall.
she's like a god. a good luck charm. or a vice........2004-02-04
Interesting record. Lots of great stuff here, if not totally satisfying. The music written by long time foil/collaborator/benefactor John Parish. The lyrics written by PJ. PJ has said she loved this record because it challenged her writing skills and she felt she grew quite a bit from the experience, as she was working differently than she had in the past.
There are a few PJ Harvey records I would recommend before getting this one. While there are those who think it is among her best work and love it the most, I think the "typical" fan prefers some of her other titles more. Plus, given the fact that much of the music was beyond her influence, listening to this album first fails to give you a sense of her own musical perspective.
Next to '4-Track Demos', I think this album is her most challenging work and is probably best to explore a little later on. That being said, highlights for me include 'Heela', 'Civil War Correspondent', 'Taut' (though I much prefer live versions from '98 era), 'That Was My Veil'.. well, there are a few more good ones here too. So, I guess I like this album even more than I thought. Lol!
It was Spring or Summer '65..........2003-05-02
Of all of Polly Jean Harvey's albums this one seems to receive the most negative reviews. OK, so it's not an "official" PJ Harvey album. And no, it's not another "To Bring You My Love." But it is another great CD. In fact it actually features one of Polly's best songs, "Taut" and John Parish is quite an accomplished musician and composer. In terms of lyrical content and moody blues this album has a lot in common with "To Bring You My Love." Yes, a few of the songs are structurally weak, but most of them are still better than the majority of "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea." This is one hell of an album with a ferocious rock out vibe. Isn't experimentation a good thing? Why not judge for yourself?
Polly Jean and John alone.......2002-01-09
Words and music, the basic building blocks of song. That's all you'll find on this departure from rock vocalist Polly Jean Harvey. Together with guitarist John Parish, they create stark beauty in its simplest form.
A lovely disc for fans of PJ, or for anyone who likes singer-songwriter type music.
a gem of a find for PJ fans.......2001-12-13
"Dance Hall at Louse Point" is an overlooked gem. I am a big PJ fan, and after hearing this cd, I've become an admirer of John Parish as well.
Granted, it's not for everyone, but PJ's solo music isn't for everyone either, is it? Therefore, anyone who appreciates PJ will surely appreciate this collaboration. Parish's music has a raw, bluesy sound that mixes with PJ's soulful singing perfectly. There are some extraordinary, haunting tracks that I love, like "Rope Bridge Crossing" and "Civil War Correspondent". "That Was My Veil" is an exceptionally beautiful song and is a little easier to swallow than the rest.
As I listen to this, I imagine sitting in on a private session between Parish and PJ. They're free to play whatever they want, whichever way they want, and that music, unrefined and unrestrained, is what you get in "Dance Hall at Louse Point." The result is stunning.

You Won't be Disappointed .......2007-07-23
I first learned about this record when I heard LaBamba in a restaurant juke box in 1969. I went around to all the local record stores looking for it. I finally found it. I already had the single of "If I Had a Hammer", so I knew at least 2 songs. I loved the entire album. In 2001 Collectors' Choice music released it on CD, of course I got it.
I always thought Trini was underrated. He made some fantastic music. According to Joel Whitburn's Top Adult Contemporary hits 1961-2001, Trini was
#152 out of the best 200 artists.
Trini Lopez.......2007-07-13
This Cd is Great! I grew up listening to this " record" and I remember taking it to parties with me! Hearing it on Cd just brings back such wonderful memories of the 60's and 70's for me. Bye Bye Blackbird was always a favorite
of mine where I could really sing out! It was well worth the wait from Amazon.
TRINI LOPEZ( recorded live) AT PJ'S.......2006-10-01
In my opinion this was Trini Lopez most popular album of his entire career. Recorded live in 1962 during one of Trini's memorable performances at PJs in Texas, and released by Frank Sinatra's "Reprise" label, this CD a must have for all Trini Lopez and rock music (with tex-mex music influence) fans. In my opinion, the crown jewels of this recorded live performance are definitely the old time hit classics "America" and "If I Had a Hammer". This album includes its original Lp cover and also offers memorable bonus tracks which makes its purchase mandatory for all those of us who remember listening and dancing to it when it was released during 1963 and long after that. Its a wonderful thing that those who think likewise released it on CD format therefore making it possible for us to keep enjoying it today.
TRINI AT PJ'S STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.......2005-09-25
All the tracks on this CD stand the test of time.
They bring back the simplier times of the 60's and let us know how bad the music is today.
This CD brings back the good music.
"If I Had a Hammer" makes Trini Lopez a folk singing star.......2004-03-25
With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the more unusual singing stars of the Folk Revival. "Trini Lopez at PJ's" made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for about a year while the single "If I Had a Hammer" became Lopez's first hit. Lopez was actually the singer and guitar player for a folk trio that had Dick Brant on bass and Mickey Jones on drums. A key part of this album is that it is a live performance, which played to Lopez's strengths as an infectious and likeable performer. Not that Lopez was an overnight sensation. Buddy Holly had tried to get Lopez signed with his label, but prejudice against his ethnicity killed that deal and it was not until Frank Sinatra signed Lopez to his personal label, Reprise, that Lopez was able to record his first album under his own name.
Lopez's reputation as a folk singer was made on the strength of "If I Had a Hammer," which eventually sold five million copies and made it to #1 in over two-dozen countries around the world. A fair share of the songs here are indeed folk songs, such as as "This Land Is Your Land" and his medley of "Gotta Travel On" and "Down by the Riverside," but Lopez also plays on his Latin heritage by doing "A-Me-Ri-Ca" from "West Side Story," his own versions of "La Bamba" (the song that greets you at Lopez's official website), "Cielito Lindo," and "Granada." He even throws in a little Ray Charles by covering "What'd I Say." The common denominator for all these songs is Lopez's high energy.
Hoping to repeat the instant success of this album a second LP, "More Trini Lopez at PJ's" came out in August of that year, but it represents more of a shift away from folk and towards rock. Trini Lopez is one of those artists where his best album was the first one, and if you pick up anything beyond one of his better hits collections this would be the album.

This issue offer the first time that Barney Kessel has ever recorded live while playing in a night club. As a bonus track this CD concludes with an outstanding tune, "Blue Mist," a Kessel's originals, which is the springboard for stunning "conversations" among three guitar giants - Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrell, and Grant Green captured at Ronnie Scott's in London in 1969. Timeless.......2007-06-27
This is Trini at his best. A timeless rock 'n' roll classic with a boistrous crowd to boot. Each song (with the exception of "Yeah") is a gem. Put this on at any hip party and watch the rug cut. I would take this album to my grave.

MAGNIFICENT & DEEPLY SOULFUL~BRAVO TIMI YURO!!!.......2007-03-03
At last the complete brilliant "Timi Yuro Live At PJ's" perfectly remastered in such great sound that one is transformed back in time to that legendary West Hollywood Nightclub in the late sixties with this incomparable singer who is the greatest from her generation yet strangely today is overlooked by the musically bankrupt music industry even though big fans include music legends such as Dinah Washington, Elvis and Willie Nelson. Timi is in great voice with a cooking band and in loose and funky form and oh that enthralling voice...nobody ever came close to those wonderful husky tones and Timi is deeply soulful and wildly passionate and it is all here for the listener to enjoy over and over and these tremendous vocals are on fire and red hot!!! Between song banter with the audience is fun and enjoyable and a plus here as it makes the whole wonderous experience complete and extensive liner notes with a gorgeous photo collection make this a must-have stellar release! Bravo Timi and we miss you alot and there will never be another like you...a true classic original at the peak of her wonderous powers and all in front of an adoring crowd who sound like they are having the time of their life and so will you!!! Hopefully the next Timi release to compact disc will be her classic "Something Bad On My Mind" lp from 1968 that is one of the greatest female vocal albums ever recorded and it is the great work that should have made Timi Yuro a household name and major Superstar but for some strange reason this masterpiece was not promoted and sadly slipped through the cracks and it is incredible that it has not been released on cd as many fans are waiting for it...a superb tour-de-force with every song a standout and great full orchestra arrangements make this stunning collection a must have for anyone who loves a great voice in a magnificent setting...what are we waiting for?
The only live album.......2005-08-22
Timi is to me the greatest white soul singer ever, but this is not a brilliant album, as some tracks are repeated.
Nevertheless, the power and emotion of her wonderful voice shines through even though she must have sung some of the songs so many times.
This lady could rip your heart out with such emotion as she seems to live a song, not just sing it.
Listen to The Lost Voice Of Soul and The Voice That Got Away to really hear her. Both are compilation albums, but are excellent buys and show what a talent escaped most people
Timi Yuro - Live.......2001-08-11
The third of the Liberty Records Timi Yuro catalog released on CD from the UK company RPM Records - and the first time this full album has been released in any format. Possibly not the greatest things ever cut by Miss Yuro - that had to be the 'Make The World Go Away' album - with the London recorded 'Something Bad on My Mind' a close second, but a live recording from 1969 never-the-less. Whilst not a good introduction to Timi - along with the other two RPM discs it does cover her time at Liberty (1961-1965 and 1968-1969) and sit comfortably with them. If you have them get this, if not try 'The Lost Voice of Soul' and/or 'The Voice That Got Away' first. I have tried to be un-biased in this review. Personally I have thought Timi Yuro the greatest US white soul singer since 1961, have everything she has ever recorded, and the woman can do no wrong for me.
Worth the Wait.......2000-05-04
Perhaps the rarest of Timis' recordings, it's a real treat to have it released 31 years after the fact. This showcases this remarkable lady with all her raw emotion and soul intact. A must for any Timi Yuro fan! Well worth the wait!

Standells - 'In Person At The PJ's' Import CD.......2004-03-11
First off,I'd like to mention that when I FIRST heard about this release,I honestly thought it was a hoax.Glad I was wrong. For a true fan or collector of '60's garage/psych,'In Person...' is a slice of nostalgic heaven.Eleven tracks that were recorded live in front of a late night crowd at a club in San Francisco in 1964.The sound mix is superb.Remember, this was BEFORE "Dirty Water" came out,so it's not on here. However, the Standell's trademark keyboard/guitar riff can be heard on "Help Yourself","What Have I Got Of My Own",their Beatles cover "You Can't Do That","Bony Maronie" and their wailing "Louie Louie".Also wanted to mention, even though this took place early in the band's career, all four original members are here,Dick Dodd on drums/vocals,Larry Tamblyn on organ,Gary Lane on bass and Tony Valentino on guitar.Get this title NOW before it goes out of print.
