Yella Hoose

John McCusker is best known for his job of playing fiddle in the current edition of the Battlefield Band, a group he joined in 1990 when he was 17 years old. Yella Hoose is his second solo release, and it's a collection of 11 original tunes composed in the traditional Scottish style. (The CD was named for the yellow house McCusker lives in.) McCusker has invited some of the finest Celtic musicians in the world to perform with him, and he proves himself to be a generous host by giving his guests plenty of room to shine. As good a fiddler as McCusker is, he sounds even better when he is trading licks with Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott on the lovely "Emma and Jamie's Wedding" or playing off the subtle harmonic and rhythmic variations of Fyace guitarist Ian Carr. Perhaps the finest track on this CD is the duet with English folk singer Kate Rusby on "Night Visiting Song," which features music by McCusker and lyrics by Rusby. Although the tunes on Yella Hoose were composed quite recently, they are infused with an ancient Scottish spirit that belies their tender years. --Michael Simmons
