The tumbling drums, staccato guitar fuzz, and hypnotic marimba of opener "I'm the Moon" make clear that Lynn Miles isn't about to be satisfied with decorous acoustic conventions or rote Americana. Her fourth album shifts gracefully across summery guitar pop, stately piano ballads, and creaky banjo dirges while remaining grounded in songs that, though suffused with disillusion and loss, always reveal "the pull of the human heart." With her lightly scratched, winsome voice, Miles can make you believe that Dorothy is more than a Hollywood cutout, that a dead-end town can still yield poetry, and that "sad songs matter most." Unravel may be Miles's most aggrieved, melancholy work; it's also her most daring and beautiful. --Roy Kasten

Album Description
VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL: THE STRING TRIBUTE TO BJORK features classic instrumental renditions of her introspective and atmospheric songs. This collection gives an epic sweep to Bjork's songs that resonates with new intensity when performed by these versatile cellists, violists and violinists. VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL strips Bjork's sonic testaments to their bare essence, the symphonic arrangements that are the core of her music, the artists using the rich tones of their stringed instruments to capture the true spirit of Bjork's lush and dreamy vocal stylings. An absolute must for even the most casual of Bjork fans...

WOW.......2006-02-28
From the first time that I heard Bjork's lyrical vocal passages to the first time that I layed ears on her crazy outbursts, I knew she was insane. Bjork has to be one of the most incredibly talented and creative musicians of our time.
This disc can in no way do justice to what Bjork is capable of, but it is a marvelous interpretation of what she has done. The disc features the cello on quite a number of tracks and also employs pizzicato and portimento techniques to capture some of the eerie sounds that Bjork uses on her albums.
This is a remarkable album as a stand alone - and considering how lowsy many of the tribute albums have been lately, it is quite an accomplishment.
I would recommend that everyone - from Bjork fans to John Cage fans alike - invest in this disc. You won't regret it!

The Fray write songs with impeccable pop hooks. The talented string musicians on this record have taken those melodies and infused them with newfound emotional character. Violins, viola, and cello each add new layers of nuance and intensity to such hits as "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "She Is." These instrumentals offer worthwhile insight to the music of this talented new band.

Music Blew Me Away!.......2002-09-05
I recently had the opportunity to hear Aryeh at the Kings Mountain Art & Music Faire in Woodside, CA. I heard about 30 seconds of his live music and stepped up to buy one of his CD's. This one was recommended and I must admit this music does indeed possess special spiritual and spacial qualities. I knew I'd find the artist who would play the harp as it has always been associated- with heavenly sounds. This music is fabulous and is a bit of a departure from his previous more traditional Celtic influences. Although, I'm trying to find his Songs of Scandinavian CD through a regular source, and I'm not finding it. Don't pass this music up if you're looking for lift in your consciousness too.
His music has the soul, all musician should provide to us........1999-12-12
When I listened to private sampler, copy of Frankfurter's harp from my best friend, I've started to order this CD before tape finished. Actually, this is the most beautiful celtic music album, I've ever listened. However, more than that, his music has the soul, which all musician should provide to listener. But, we can rarely get it. I think this CD is the treasure in my life. I want to encourage you to meet this finest album. At least, you can understand why I'm so happy that I'm writing this to you. I hope you will appreciate it, like I did to my friend for his kind introduction.
Music for Dreamers and Lovers.......1999-12-08
The musical genius of Mr. Frankfurter weaves together the voices of harp, strings, and other instuments, in his own arrangements of classical melodies as well as original compositions. This music evokes what is best in all of us. Great for meditation, massage time, or rocking your toddler to sleep. Better than The Chieftains!
The most gentle, luscious Celtic music I have EVER heard!.......1999-08-17
I just sent this email to Aryeh. It conveys so well how I feel about his music that I thought I'd share it here, too:
"I heard your harp as I walked towards Fisherman's Wharf recently on my very first visit to San Francisco, and I turned to my sister and said, "Where is that wonderful music coming from? Let's find it!" We followed our ears (and hearts) to Ghirardelli Square and watched and listened to you play your beautiful music. I was totally entranced. I have been in love with Celtic music for several years, and I own an extensive collection of Celtic music CDs and other "world" music. But your masterful playing of the harp moved me in a way I haven't felt before.
I bought "Lest the Harp Strings Unravel" that day, and I've listened to it at work and at home every day since I got back to Florida. It amazes me that I never tire of it, even if the same CD plays over and over again for 10 or 12 hours. Just hearing the gentle, luscious strains of your harp transports me back to the Bay and that gorgeous day in the City.
I think now that I must have more! I'll definitely be ordering more of your music - for myself and others. Thanks for playing it for us."
Aryeh Frankfurter's album is serenly beautiful........1998-12-19
I own several of Aryeh's albums. His music is hauntingly beautiful. Of all my albums, his are my favorite. I can listen to them all day, day after day. I am currently purchasing this album for a dear friend and her newborn. I can think of no better music to refresh the mother and calm the infant, allowing them both to enter into a most beautiful musical world.

Customer Reviews:
This CD belongs in Dante.......2007-02-25
In Dante's Inferno, there is a section of hell he titles "Malebolge," in which the sinners, placed in hell for being sullen, are immersed in a muddy swamp to chant their grievances for eternity, mud filling their mouths and only gargled bubbles resulting.
I bring the image up only to enforce how much I dislike this CD. Please don't just label me as overreacting--I love KT Tunstall and Sarah Harmer, who are much in the same style, and the title track to this album is great. However, the album as a whole is one of the worst ones I've ever listened to. Though depressing music is my mainstay ("Poison Oak," by Bright Eyes; "Valentine," by the Old 97's; "Oh My Sweet Carolina," by Ryan Adams; "Don't Cry," by Seal; "Oblivion," by Astor Piazolla; "Evaporated," by Ben Folds Five; "The Believer," by Rhett Miller; "Wise Up," by Aimee Mann; "Between the Bars," by Elliott Smith; "Hide and Seek," by Imogen Heap), this album has no redemptive beauty about it, and listening to it just feels like Malebolge, like you're being choked by mud and depression and it's all in grays and browns without even an appreciation or recognition of the other colors of the world.
As I said, the title track is good, but thanks to Apple, you can now spend $1 and purchase it legally online, rather than resorting to piracy or spending more money than you really ought on such a bad CD.
Cheers!
A Hole In My Head/The Music of Losers.......2004-09-11
Lukewarm at best, sounding like satire at worst, this is bloodless, clammy music. I regret buying this CD-- there's one worthwhile track on the album, which is "Over You." I heard it in a Starbucks in Chicago.
Some songs on this disc actually make me cringe: with lyrics like "Here's a toast to the underdogs/the little boats lost in the fog/the ones who don't quite fit the mould/who never do what they are told," Brave Parade tops that list. Other tracks tend towards similar schlock, with an attempt to mine the same shaft that a Coal Miner's Daughter could in "Black Flowers." However, Miles is incredibly unbelievable with her brand of painful Americana, her lyricism being thin and her old guitar tiresome.
If I could keep it from having a star at all, I would.
STILL ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.......2004-02-16
It's been over a year since the last review, and I've never been moved to write one, but this CD gets more beautiful as it ages. If anyone stumbles across these reviews, just know that Lynn is as good as the best country, folk, country-western, or bluegrass singer/songwriter/performer today. I have never recommended a CD more often or had as many heartfelt thanks for a suggestion. Give the CD a listen, and then spread the joy of your discovery; such beautiful creations deserve greater recognition and the financial rewards that accompany such success.
Arghhhhh.......2003-01-21
Isn't there any thing out there with some energy? I was looking for new CDs, this one came up. I read the reviews. I bought it! This is some of the most depressing music I have ever heard. Similar tone to Janis Ian. If you are looking for depressing, non inspired music - go for it. I wish I had saved my money.
Why isn't this woman a star????.......2002-12-09
I first saw Lynn back in '96, I think, in a music series a friend was promoting. We were all absolutely knocked out by her brilliant, dark lyrics, beautiful voice and her marvelous self-deprecating sense of humor. We chatted at an after concert party (where she put a "Canadian curse" on me ;-) and I found her to be just as charming off stage as she is on.
I saw Lynn again just the other night (with the exceptional Keith Glass accompanying), and I have to say her songs and her voice just keep getting better. I cannot understand why she's not one of the biggest selling singer-songwriters today. If you can, do try to catch Lynn in person, but if you can't this album (and her other albums) are the next best thing. You'll be converted.
