The best sounds I have ever heard.......2007-02-13
This music style is great. Unfortunately this music style ( and others) are very rare in Berlin, Germany. Is there more music from Jim Taylor?
I shall buy them.....
Enjoyed this very much.......2006-05-30
I jam in the mountains with a group that plays both Irish music and what they call "old time music." This collection falls into both categories.
Lovely Traditional Tunes.......2005-07-05
When I first heard this, I played it through three times in a row. The hammered dulcimer, the fiddle and the banjo make you travel back in time to music played on the porch or at a dance. They do a great job with these. Very pleasant listening!
You get 74 minutes of lilting music that has you tapping your foot. Even an oldie like "Turkey in the Straw" sounds fresh at the hands of Jim Taylor.
Nice Collection of Tunes & Great Liner Notes.......2005-05-09
Playing music was one of the few ways Civil War soldiers had to break the mind-numbing tedium of camp life in the weeks and months between battles. Back home, in civilian life, these tunes would be played at barn dances and hoe-downs, but around the camp fires they became a welcome distraction from the war. The old fiddle tunes in this impressive collection were all current during the 1860s, and would certainly have been in the repertoire of camp fiddlers both North and South. Several of these tunes take their names from incidents in the war, like The Rebel Raid, Bragg's Retreat, or Hell Broke Loose in Georgia.
`The playing on this instrumental collection is first rate; I particularly enjoy the lively fiddling of Bruce Greene. As a fiddler myself, I found the tune arraignments to be simple and straightforward, and was able to add several of these tunes to my own repertoire after repeated listening. The liner notes provided with the CD are outstanding - extensive notes are included for each tune, including Civil War stories and legends that have become part of each tune's lore. This CD is a great addition to any collection of Civil War or old timey music.
It is for reasons of personal taste that I only rated this fine CD as four stars. As a fiddler, I am partial to fiddle music, and almost all of the tunes here are old fiddle tunes. Jim Taylor, however, plays a hammer dulcimer, and plays or shares lead on most of the tunes. Even though Mr. Taylor is a fine player, I find that the dulcimer lacks the power and verve of a fiddle. It is a fine point of taste, but worth noting. Even with this caveat, this is the finest collection of its kind, and I enthusiastically recommend it.

Excellent old-timey pickin' and hammerin'.......2002-12-21
It is so rare these days to here a male style hammer dulcimer player, such as Jim Taylor, that is playing with synchopation and a driving rhythm. I suppose that is politically incorrect to say these days. However, this style of dulcimer playing is very different than the harp like exquisite Celtic tunes of a Maggie Sansone. This is one of the few CD's out there that has this rare, near extinct art form. Dulcimers could be backpacked or horse hauled into remote areas, whereas pianos were the luxury of the monied class. While they had their pianos, linens, polished silverware and servants, the people that had the guts to fight the civil war on both sides or be a pioneer in the old west had their music. The only thing that is missing is friends, fellow soliders or family gathered around a camp fire or woodstove. There is also excellent banjo provided by Sheila Adams ( yes, a female banjo player ) and fiddle provided by Bruce Greene. Sheila is providing here a smooth finger style lead and counterpoint banjo. Bruce is using the flatter faced fiddle to its best advantage for its double notes and slides. This provides voice like expressiveness. Several songs have a dulcimer, banjo, fiddle shared lead. The songs themselves are timeless and you keep humming or whistling them long after listening. It is more than just historic value here. If re-issued as simply old time blue grass, it may be closer to the truth and accessible to a wider audience that may still be traumatized by their high school history class. My wish list for future albums is to please include Bodhran ( Irish Drum ), spoons and bones, and/or Octave Mandolin. The Mandolin is a perfect complement to dulcimer.

Jim Taylor's second collection. This recording, along with the first volume, is a collection of toe-tapping campfire tunes, barn dance music, and minstrel show melodies that were current around the time of the Civil War.

Absolutely Excellent Old Time Historic Folk Music!.......2003-01-29
For all of us that were traumatized by their high school history class, let's call this old time Bluegrass or Folk Music. This is a repeat of their first Civil War volume, and this review is a repeat of my admiration for the first volume. This CD is a bit slower paced and adds a Tin Whistle. I like to play my Irish Drum, Bones and Spoons to the first album. I like to play my Bouzouki, Banjo and Guitar to the second. Thank you for the Irish influence. My ancestors fought on both sides of the Civil War. That makes a lot of sense, Irish killing Irish under generals with English last names. A strange twist of fate. Unfortunately, this was one of the only alternatives to the Great Potato Famine back in the motherland. What if they put down their rifles and picked up their instruments and had a huge jam session instead of a war? Please read my review of the first album. The back up guitar in this album stands out more, and I love the skillful "bridge" transitions between chords. If the Jim Taylor group wants to keep making these CD's, I'll keep buying them. This is old time music at its best by an excellent group.
Music Lover.......2002-11-15
If you liked Jim Taylor first "Civil War Collection" you will love this one as well. Jim's Civil War Collections 1 and 2 are a must for anyone interested in Civil War music or in general Old Time music. I highly recommend, you will not be disappointed.

Traditional songs that convey simple values & heartfelt emotion.......2007-01-03
Playing Time - 50:50 -- The Cumberlands (Harold Thom, Betty Thom, Jim Smoak) started as an eclectic acoustic folk trio in the early-1960s. They always blended elements of folk, bluegrass, country and pop music, to create their own authentic signature sound. In fact, it was thirty years ago that the trio was a dominant mainstream folk music force in Louisville's music scene, regularly played the clubs, and had a significant national reputation. Together for about ten years, they toured the country and recorded nine LPs.
On "Civil War Tribute Collection," just Harold Thom (guitar, vocals) and Jim Smoak (banjo, harmonica) are accompanied by Michael Cleveland (fiddle, mandolin) and J. D. Miller (bass). The traditional material was recorded on March 10-11, 2005 in Kentucky. Nashville-based country music historian Colin Escott provides liner notes about each song in the 12-page CD booklet. Besides missing Betty Thom, I also would've liked to hear a few more uptempo pieces as well as some vocal harmonies occasionally. Three instrumentals (Soldier's Joy, Aura Lee, Run Boy Run) are among the 15-track set, and they provide a bit of liveliness.
It's nice to see 2/3 of the original Cumberlands back in the spotlight. Harold and Betty Thom both grew up in Shreveport, played in high school band, became sweethearts, and married during college. Starting a career in television, it was a fateful day in 1962, that Harold Thom met banjo player Jim Smoak who has performed with Bill Monroe, Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, Hylo Brown, and Earl Scruggs. These 15 tracks demonstrate that The Cumberlands' have an affinity for songs of battle, pride, honor, loved ones and home sick blues. Nothing pretentious or over-produced here. Some additional period instrumentation would've enhanced the overall project. Can't say I've ever heard "Goober Peas" done with the verses more as narrative recitations. I'm more used to Burl Ives' rendition. The songs convey simple values and heartfelt emotion, with a straightforward directness that explains why many of us found folk and acoustic music during the sixties. Although Harold's voice has gotten a little deeper and huskier, he and Jim are back to remind us of their creative approach and significant contributions to acoustic folk music. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Civil War Tribute Collection.......2005-11-28
I loved this new CD by The Cumberlands. I did miss Betty's voice, but Harold's still great and Jim Smok (unsure of correct spelling) is super on the banjo. Can't wait for next CD to come out.
A Definate Tribute To The Time.......2005-11-21
This album portrays the true spirit of the civil war era. With uplifting ballads of pride to the sorrowful songs of loss and regret. The instrumentation is amazing as well as the vocals by Harold Thom. All together this is a great album to have if you are feeling nostalgic for the days of old or want to bring out your true southern pride. So wave that bonnie blue flag and purchase this record.
