Points off for poor mastering, packaging.......2003-02-28
Terrific material here from the Clancys and Makem, no question about that. The original two albums this CD has been assembled from are classics of Irish traditional folksong, and in a way, this CD package is the best way to acquire both in digital format at a bargain price. However, the mastering for CD is perfunctory at best and a cheat at worst. The first half, the rebel songs from the original "Irish Songs of Rebellion" (aka Rising for the Moon; be aware of many repackagings of Clancy Bros. material on various labels) is the better job, although the production still sounds thin. But the second half, the drinking songs from "Come Fill Your Glass with Us", is woeful. The playing speed is too fast compared to the original vinyl and these songs have patently been prepared from a vinyl LP, not original master tapes -- you can still hear the pops and clicks and turntable hum. There's no excuse for this.
Many reviewers of other Clancy Bros. albums have complained about shoddy repackagings and haphazard presentation and noted that it's about time Sony/Columbia put some effort into compiling a complete set of Clancy Bros. recordings in proper sound quality. I heartily second this motion. ...
If you buy one Clancy Brothers CD...this is the one!!.......2001-03-14
Ah, Ireland, the land of sad love and happy war. The songs are funny, rousing, sad, uplifting and satirical all at the same time. Many of the songs, such as "Nell Flaherty's drake are camoflaged songs of protest against the British "oppressors." I find my self humming the songs and I'm not even Irish. What's even more unusual is my 17 year old son likes the songs too.
Great rebel music........1999-12-12
The Clancy's are at their best when singing about rebellion. This album will remind you just how much you hate the Brits!

If you can find a more stirring collection of Irish ditties, you'd better buy it, but it's doubtful you'll top this budget set. Not with the great Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem doing the honors and a price so low you'll be able to afford an extra pint for your mates. The wind is at your back all the way as the lads avoid chestnuts like "Danny Boy" along with Broadway-Irish show tunes, tearing into "Whack Fol the Diddle" and other "reel" deals instead. Highlights include the weeper "The Croppy Box," roof rattler "Finnigan's Wake," and "The Rising of the Moon," better known for the same-tune political song it spawned, "The Wearing of the Green." Tommy is in beautiful voice on "The Foggy Dew," earning his reputation as one of the best Irish singers of recent decades, and the Clancy Brothers excel on instruments and voice box. --Bob Tarte

fabulous .......2007-07-22
I love hearing the old Irish songs my grandparents sung. This was great for my St Patrick's day dinner.
Casual Listener .......2007-06-25
I don't listen to a lot of this style of music and am trying it out for the first time. I must say that I like it great to read or tie flies too, if you're into that sort of thing.
Upbeat!.......2007-05-24
Clancy bros is always a good choice. This album combines all the music from 2 older releases, good price!

Just to clarify the music...
These tracks come from the first two albums of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They are called "Rising of the Moon" and "Come Fill Your Glass With Us" These tracks were recently reissued on Rykodisc, restored and remastered. Frankly, they sound AMAZING! This complation has terrible sound quality, and the recordings sound like they were copied from an old LP. Don't settle for this ugly sounding reissue, go and check out the remastered versions. Unless you are on a serious budget, get the other discs. Combined, they cost about twice what this costs, but IT IS WORTH IT!

Customer Reviews:
A great debut item.......2007-07-22
Until about 10 years ago, the first three Clancy Brothers albums were only available on trashy reissues that had terrbile sound quality. Now, here they are remastered and restored for future generations to enjoy. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem would become the biggest names in Irish folk music throughout the 1960's and 1970's, performing all over the world, including biannual concerts at Carnegie Hall in NYC. The very first album they ever recorded was done in a kitchen using only harmonica and some sparse guitar. Otherwise, it was just the four of them belting out traditional Irish songs. When that release (also called Rising of the Moon) was deemed unsuitable, the group went back in 1959 and rerecorded this album, augmented by professional musicians. It is a fantastic debut record which showes the great potential that these artists posessed. Hopefully the very first album will surface someday on a CD release, but until then, I will continue to enjoy this second version of a great album.
Also available are "Come Fill Your Glass With Us" (second album), and "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem" (third album).
WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18
The following review is being used to comment on several of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem recordings. The obvious musical skills, talent and commitment to craftsmanship of this group during its history need no comment by me. Nor does their commitment to keeping alive the Irish folk tradition. Thus, the criterion for review is whether the works represents the political traditions associated with the historic struggle for independence from the English.
A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.
A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.
Rebellion and transcendence.......2002-04-20
A timeless album from the boys, and a great collection of songs. When I was growing up (in England), just about every household we ever went to had this album - even a lot of English folk music fans loved the Clancies and Tommy M. You can't be a Folk fan and not love Irish music.
My one regret is that this album lacks a traditional version of Wearin' O The Green (the Wolfe Tones covered it on Profile). Like so many classic Irish rebel songs, Rising Of The Moon was written about the 1798 United Irishmen uprising, and is the same air as WOTG, but lyrically it lacks some of The Green's power. WOTG was about the banning of the shamrock and St. Patrick's Day by the English, and when they sang "They're hanging men and women there, for the wearin' o' the green" they weren't kidding.
This beautifully remastered CD contains a very informative booklet, which gives something of the history of each song, and which singer is featured, as well as details about each of the boys, including Pat's former IRA connections. Street cred, or what?
There are so many standout songs here, including Tipperary Far Away (sometimes known as Sean Tracy) and The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which features the golden voice of Tommy Makem. While Tommy's version is quite simply the best rendition ever by a male, the greatest version by a female remains Lisa Gerrard's version on Toward The Within by Dead Can Dance (available through Amazon).
Truly a wonderful album, full of love, passion and ancient wisdom.
Early Clancy stuff, seriously presented..........2001-12-30
I have this album on vinyl issued on the Tradition label. There is a story, probably not true, that the boys recorded these songs in their kitchen around l956. It doesn't matter. If you like the Clancys and/or songs of the Irish uprisings, it is a must own. I have played it to death over the years, and had to buy a cassette reissue when my last turntable failed. Undoubtedly, one of these days I will buy this CD to replace the tape. I like almost everything on this collection. These are hymns of death, bravery, oppression, betrayal, guerilla warfare, grief and loss. Doesn't sound like fun, but it is great music. Later in their careers, the Clancys put out some great humorous songs, drinking songs, love songs...but this one is different. If you have an interest in Ireland's struggle against Britain, and sometimes the fight between factions of Irishmen, this is essential.

Oldie and Goodie.......2007-04-11
A collection of great pub songs of old Ireland. "Whisky, You're the Devil" will make anyone Irish when they hear it! The Clancys and Tommy Makem will have you tapping your foot in no time.
Great music, Poor sound.......2007-03-18
The best version of this title on cd was issued by RYKO in the 90's. The Empire Musicwerks series are sonic disasters. They add effects that are not on the original recordings. Avoid like the plague.
Fun, Beautiful, Enlightening.......2007-02-19
I'm not an Irish music scholar, just a casual fan. These songs range from the spirited to the plaintive. Liam Clancy's voice will send shivers through you, the rest of the singers are good too. Dylan fans will delight in hearing a couple of tunes he covered and reworked in the first few years of his recording career (not just Moonshiner-I won't spoil it by giving away anymore).
The original album was released in 1959, this is a straight reissue. All songs are trad/public domain.

A Generous Helping.......2001-01-29
This CD is copiled from several old Clancy LPs, all of which were worth having. Pleasant, straightforward presentation of a wide variety of tunes, some well-known, but many obscure and a real treat to discover. Even amid the recent flood of Irish traditional singing, Makem's voice still excells most of them, and he is at his best on some of these songs. A pretty decent pile of songs for your money, as well.
