Between the time he was lead guitarist in John Gorka's college band and the time he launched his own singer-songwriter career, Richard Shindell attended the Union Theological Seminary. The experience didn't turn him into a preachy true believer but gave him an abiding interest in spiritual matters--an interest that informs his fine album, Reunion Hill. The lead-off track, "The Next Best Western," for example, finds him driving late at night on a Midwestern interstate, wishing he could believe in something as passionately as the fire-breathing preacher on the late-night gospel station seems to. Bolstered by a James Taylor-like melody, the chorus turns into a prayer, "Lord, deliver me, deliver me to the next Best Western."

The same skeptical but irrepressible fascination with things spiritual informs most of the other songs as well. When he sings of life "Beyond the Iron Gate," the images are flexible: describing both a literal fence around a country house and a metaphorical fence around a shy, self-doubting man. On "I Saw My Youth Today," an imagined meeting between the singer and his teenage self becomes a real encounter between a raving, middle-aged man and a frightened stranger on the sidewalk. Shindell, who wrote a strong Civil War song on his last release, comes up with another for the title track of this album. The story of "Reunion Hill" is told by a farmwife who remembers all the soldiers who "limped across this field of mine," yet none of them were the husband she had sent off to war. Producer-guitarist Larry Campbell frames all these numbers with sympathetic folk-rock arrangements. --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars Reunion review.......2004-08-13

The songs are well written and the production has more of a country feel than some of his other CDs. Richard Shindell is a masterful lyricist and the cuts on this CD provide some fine examples of his workmanship (i.e. "He who made the lamb, put the tremble in the hand that reaches out to take my quarter.") The recording has some issues with various pops and thumps in most of the tracks, and I only gave it three stars because of the recording quality.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best singer songwriter now in existence.......2003-10-30

I have all his albums loaded on my car's 6 CD-changer. The man is an American treasure and his music has single-handedly resuciated my belief in American music. He is amazing, gifted, superb, brilliant.

Long live Richard Shindell!

4 out of 5 stars Good album........2003-08-08

I heard Richard Shindell on my local NPR station and instantly enjoyed him. His music is both relaxing and thought provoking at the same time. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars brand new to me.......2002-01-20

I have some Dar Williams' and Lucy Kaplansky' CD's, plus naturally Cry,Cry,Cry' CD. And I really don't understand why not start this passion with Richard Shindell. I order this CD from ... recently and I can't leave out this music day by day. I'm looking for this acoustic music long since. The arrangement is breath-taking! Okay, Richard Shindell's voice remind us of Michael Stipe but this music is more acoustic and more reflective and poetic!

3 out of 5 stars A great songwriter, a mediocre CD.......2001-06-10

Shindell is one of the best songwriters to come from the 90's. But this cd is overproduced, and frankly, hard to listen to it without the skip buttom. Some songs are better, other just drawn in a very bad production. Go for "Somewhere Near Patterson" and "Sparrows Points" and wait until these songs are released on a live cd, or as acoustic guitar and vocals. Maybe one day...

5 out of 5 stars Music that touches you really deep inside.......2004-08-05

I bought this CD as far back as in 1988 and since then I have had numerous late evening occations where I could listen, enjoy and almost feel the world slow down. It totally relaxes you, it practically gives your mind a new dimension - you just feel as good as you can get.

Scott Cossu is truly a master with his piano, but Eugene Friesen is on this album infact just as important with his cello. "Reunion" is the soul reason (and a good one) for me to buy his other albums.

5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2003-10-23

This album was more relaxing than his previous album "Islands" It wasn't a muzak album it was relaxing piano all the way through and I liked that. I play this album when I'm getting ready for bed. It helps me sleep so much better at night. Scott is one of a kind. keep up the good work Scott.

5 out of 5 stars Music that liberates the soul.......2003-07-23

Scott Cossu and Eugene Friesen collaborated on this magnificent, but sadly forgotten collection of instrumentals. Judging by the song titles and album sleeve, one may be tempted to call this music New Age, which would be a mistake. The music Friesen and Cossu erected is dream-like but concise; mysterious yet inviting. Although the album, like most other pieces of music, should be analyzed as a whole, special attention should be given to the elegant, inspiring "Shepherd's Song", which, queerly, was not included with Cossu's 1992 Windham Hill retrospective.

You know this winter "reunion" is going to be a good one when Hawaiian slack-key guitar great Keola Beamer opens it with a stunning original, "Keiki's Dream." Reassembling the artists who defined the Windham Hill sound, Reunion features pianist Liz Story arranging the Spanish traditional "Babe Is Born" for solo piano, Windham vet Alex DeGrassi bringing his graceful acoustic guitar work to bear on "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," and capo William Ackermann rolling out his trademark steel-string arpeggios on a pensive, minor-key original, "Impending Death of the Virgin Spirit." The man who put Windham Hill on the map, pianist George Winston, contributes a lovely reading of Alfred Burt's "What Are the Signs," and fretless bass wonder Michael Manring tickles the ivories as well as bass on a circumspect "Year's End." More about the symbolism of the winter season than the joy of Christmas, Reunion is classic Windham Hill, meditative and a bit melancholy. Also features Mike Marshall, Ben Verdery, Paul McCandless, and others. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Review of "A Winter Solstice Reunion".......2007-02-06

Having not heard the "Soltice"s' in years, my husband loved this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A very typical "Winter Solstice" selection.......2006-12-31

This is very much in the genre of the "Winter Solstice" series. It is still very enjoyable, however, if you long for a more meditative offering. Perfect Holiday music choice.

4 out of 5 stars SUPERB, and ALMOST the best of the series.......2006-02-21

Probably 4.5 stars; A SUPERB release, and an attempt to get back to as many of the original groundbreaking artists which made the Winter's Solstice series so endearing. Highlights: As ALWAYS, I look forward most to Ackerman and especially, Barbara Higbee's contributions to any of the Winter's Solstice CDs. Higbee in particular, always has the most surprising arrangments or original compositions, and this release is a perfect example. "Snowfall Lullaby" is one of the most touching lullaby melodies. (though it is by no means sleepy; simply comforting in a sort of "neo-celtic" way). There are Harps, violin & piano; you simply must hear it to know how fine it is, and to experience what I'm trying to describe in words. Ackermann normally tries to write something original, or which is not a traditionally well-known Christmas song, which was the overall attempt in the groundbreaking first two Winter's Solstice releases. Here he does a pensive remake of one of his classics "Impending Death Of The Virgin Spirit". Perhaps one might see it as a deep-reflection on Mary's depth of charcter and her impending suffering which will one day lead to the loss of her child. Darol Anger's "I saw Three Ships" is an quite original, if more familiar melody. It's an arrangement that is peaceful & lilting & not the usual "jig" we hear so often. There are so many others: "What are the Signs" by Winston is a perfect "10", "Year's End" by Manring, Paul McCandless's "20 Degrees Below" and Liz Story's "Babe Is Born/Enter The Stable Gently". While there are a couple uneven spots, by some less familiar artists, this is one of the essential releases of the series. My final recommendation is to buy the SECOND Winter's Solstice release first, which to me, has always been the pinnacle of originality & creative spirit, even exceeding the fine first release, and then also buy this release to see how original these collections can be, before venturing into some of the later ones, most of which are good, but which often feature traditional Christmas melodies rather than the more obscure carols & original compositions featured here. Overall, nearly a perfect release!

4 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title.......2004-12-29

I have been a fan of the Windham Hill label for many years...almost since its beginning. I prefer some collections to others, but,the Winter's Solstice series continues as a favorite. For sentimental reasons, I've always been fond of the original realase in the set and when I saw this one I thought that perhaps through some miracle or some heavy lifting on the label's part, it would be comprised of new pieces from the artists on AWS. But after a quick look I have to ask, In what way is this a "reunion?" OK, Liz Story and label founder Will Ackerman are present, but where's the rest of the class? Granted, one would be hard pressed to hear new material from Shadowfax, whose offering for AWS came from their work while on another label(pre-WH), but certainly others beside Story and Ackerman survive to this day. Not to worry, the material that is here is enjoyable as always, but, if you were nostalgic for the artists of the first release, a reunion this is not.

5 out of 5 stars So good.......2002-03-22

This is the best of the Winter solstice albums. I'm not one for a real new age sound. I like classic, celtic, instruments. This CD shines... contemporary with olde sounds. The second track is by far the best track to me.. it has a holiday flavor, but I don't just listen to this during the holidays. In fact, all of the Solstice albums are like this really. Its not Christmassy.. its beautiful, serene, music. My other favorites are I, II, and VI.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2001-10-19

Kim Hill is one of the best Christian singers around . She can really kick some butt. This album proves it .
"Testimony" is one of the best of her early work . For me, it brings back alot of childhood memories. (My parents put in a rdio in my room to keep the monsters away.) My parents found a christian station for me to listen to . They played Kim Hill and Susan Ashton, among others. My favorite song of hers was "Satisfied." You will love this cd for sure, so go buy it!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Been a long time.......2000-11-17

If my mother had had a squeeze box, this entire album would have been playing 24/7. Listening to it again brings back great memories. It's a gift she'll love as the music is so heartfelt and spiritual. Kim Hill does not compromise with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Good Summary of Kim's Early Work.......1999-11-20

Kim's early recordings seemed fresh and innovative when they first made it to the Christian music scene. She was one of the first artists to introduce the country-rock, alternative style into CCM. I still find these songs inspiring and entertaining. She has a rich alto that seems part smoke, part butterscotch. These songs are Biblically based, but not preachy. I still return to Kim's early stuff whenever I feel nostalgic and need to be uplifted.

It's hard to go wrong with Talk About Life, the 1989 release that defined Kim Hill as one of Christian music's top artists. On it, she enjoys the backing of CCM's top producer, top session players, dynamite songs, and her distinctive Christie McVie-sounding voice. What's amazing (and perhaps saddening) is that the album still sounds fresh, more than a decade later. The catchy "Inside of You" and the melodramatic "Sneak in the Grass" capture the full range of Hill's deep vocals. But who would ever imagine hearing a Mellotron keyboard on "Stop, Watch and Listen," or the Elvis Presley-like rave "Let's Talk About Life" from a late 1980s album? The Beatlesque "Turning" confirms that Hill's musical roots lie in many areas. This musical potpourri, combined with earnest lyrics, makes for an enjoyable listen. --Michael T. Lyttle

    5 out of 5 stars A Rare 5-star Rating.......2000-07-10

I've been involved in Contemporary Christian Music for over 20 years. I have hundreds of Cd's. This is one of my favorites. Not only does it have the song power of such big-hitters as Wayne Kirkpatrick, Wes King and Tommy Sims, and the incredible production of Brown Bannister, but it is one of only TWO Kim Hill CD's (the other is my favorite- "Brave Heart")which TRULY capture this hugely talented artist's vocal abilities/interpretations. "Snake in the Grass" will take you through all of Kim's vocal textures, from tender timbres to gutsy, passionate declarations of the soul. One of Christian Music's finest vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Talk About Kim Hill.......2000-07-08

There is much to say about Kim Hill's Cd talk about Life. The CD is the second release from Kim HIll. Talk About Life is a powerful follow up that is Sure to inspire your soul and move your feet. It contains several upbeat rockers such as Inside of You, Snakes in the Grass and of course the Title Track Talk About Life. These tracks are simple yet not boring. New believers, will find that these helpful as they take their first babysteps with the Lord, while vetran Christians will find them to be helpful reminders of old lessons. The track Testimony is a heart wrenching reminder of our Savior's faithfullness to us in our times of need. In short,Talk About Life, speaks to all Christians and is an invitation to speak His praises. Amen!
