Few artists craft albums as meticulously as Patty Larkin, the Boston-based alterna-folk artist who bridges the genre to pop, jazz, Celtic, and classical outposts with her adventurous arrangements and melodic structures. Working again with coproducer Bette Warner, Larkin continues to match literate storytelling with textured, roomy soundscapes built on electric and acoustic guitars, lap-steel, mandolin, piano, percussion, and more. Every note is as deliberate as a brushstroke--delicate arpeggios laid aside insinuating and angry guitars--and meant to serve her sophisticated, yet intimate lyrics about the intricacies of relationships. On this, her 10th album, Larkin longs for the innocence lost in adulthood and, on a larger scheme, in the wake of 9/11. Song after song ("All That Innocence," "Children," "Home," "Different World," "Normal") finds her searching for a more innocent time; "Home" ("love can make you whole again") re-creates the harmonica and melodic turns of early-20th-century parlor music. Whether whispering the seductive "24/7/365" or meditating on the beauty of a bird migration on "The Cranes," Larkin is never short of arresting, and gorgeous. --Alanna Nash

Brilliant artist.......2005-05-15
This is a wonderful album full of beautiful, melodic songs, a very tasteful backing band on some songs, Patty's great guitar work, her haunting voice (with occasional overdubbed harmonies), her smart lyrics ... in short, the album is great.
I saw Patty live in NYC a couple of weeks ago. She was terrific, was a riot between songs, the audience was enraptured. She is an incredible artist, deserves better recognition, and this CD will not disappoint.
No Comment ..........2004-12-27
I loved Perishable Fruit, and the HDCD encoding makes it even better. But this CD got traded in the day after I bought it. Just way too "out there". Sorry Patty !
great production propels songs to the heights.......2003-10-04
On the contrary, it is the production which makes these songs! Without the complex detailed production stuff in the background, as folksongs, they might be rather ordinary. Spectacular recording quality and deep, wide, detailed soundstage propels these folk-ish/Celtic songs into new unimagined realms.
Deeply felt lyrics from Patty, offset, contrasted, or enhanced by the background.
"The Cranes" is a masterpiece, shimmers and hangs in the air like the chevron of flying birds she describes, the melody gets in your brain and sticks. "24/7/365" compulsive full-time love. "Birmingham" comments on the downside of Capitalism. Where are the "children" of yesterday? Get away from it all, Escape with your lover and "Fly away down the Boulevard". In "Italian Shoes" she is undecided about letting her lover know how she really feels.
Impressionist/Expressionist paintings in sound.
Everyone who hears it at my house says "that's really great, who is it??"
The more you listen, the more you like it.
Patty Larkin, by John Noyd of Maximum Ink.......2003-02-25
Continuing her exploration of ambient sounds and international rhythms against a backdrop of incredibly playful guitar, Patty Larkin's latest, "Red = Luck," opens up new possibilities even as she delves further into her roots. Although it is an over-worked metaphor, Patty's music is a tapestry. From electric Celtic jazz to polished honky-tonk lounge, influential threads converge in well-tuned settings of rich textures and original flavors. A hushed voice with burnished rock-blues grit sails over the tight weave of angelic choirs and intricate guitar. Blues meet global beats as infectious grooves are brought to a languid boil, half-untamed and bewitchingly seductive. Exotic fates dance to crackling passions, familiar feelings awake and unfold in poetic phrases, making the casually sophisticated, "Red = Luck," this year's safest bet. John Noyd, Maximum Ink music magazine
Frustrating.......2003-02-23
Larkin has got some genuine soul and emotion in her music. However, the production on "Red = Luck" kills the songs. The blame for this fault could easily be passed to someone else if not for Larkin herself being listed as a producer.
Her latest offering is frustrating because there is evidence that she could be great if presented in the right context. "Home" is the best song on the album-its power lies in the solitude of nothing but Larkin's understated guitar strumming and her voice.
Songs like "The Crane," however, get overproduced and wind up sounding sterile. Even Larkin's genuine performance can't save them. I would like to hear all the songs from "Red = Luck" in a live setting where their honesty is not lost.
The difference between the potential of this album and its actual presentation can be likened to Elliott Smith's jump from "Either/Or" to "Figure 8." Though many of the songs on "Figure 8" are just dandy, I always wind up taking it out of the player and replacing it with somber "Either/Or."
But if Larkin really wants to sound clean and on the cutting-edge, she could always listen to Smith's transition album, "XO." It's a fine example of how to allow lush production to enhance songs instead of hurt them.

Killer Detroit Band.......2006-12-20
Basically, this is a really strong hard rock disc - and not metal, though it's just as heavy. Angie Zilla's drumming is powerful and the guitar is in your face. The vocals are a throaty bellow in Rachael's small voice - the result is cool, like Joan Jett at 13. The bass is barely audible on headphones, though, so that is a little problem. But don't think they can't play their instruments! The lyrics are gritty, funny and grounded in reality, which proves this isn't metal. My only gripe is the remix track, which is eye-wateringly awful. Well worth buying.
Smokin' Little Band.......2006-02-28
I caught these guys in a little club in Columbus about a year ago, and after they tore the roof off the place, I had to pick this album up. Lady Luck does a good job capturing the energy the band puts out live, with a quick pace and clear, punchy production. The tunes are straight ahead, catchy and powerful hard rock; kind of like Motorhead (...). Rachael May has a great, rough voice, Angie Manly's drumming is tight and energetic, and Rachael and Kim Essiambre's guitar / bass work is rocking (if not overly complicated). This kind of stuff is usually not my cup of tea, but I'm still jamming this album regularly. Buy it.
Supersonic Action-Packed and Estrogen Powered.......2005-12-06
Here's an up-and-coming band that deserves to be so famous that they inspire a worldwide backlash from mere jealous mortals. Broadzilla are a jawdroppingly powerful metal band out of Detroit with this era's most effective combination of melody and muscle, and this album is their 2001 masterpiece. The Broadzilla sound is built upon the relentless and maximalist drum onslaught of Angie Manly and the booming classic metal basslines of Kim Essiambre. The lightning rod of the band is singer/guitarist Rachel May, a vocalist of great emotive power and a lyricist of serious skill and insight. This album's top highlights are the neckbreaking "Y Did U Have 2B Psycho," a remorseless buttkicking both lyrically and musically, and "Four: Twenty" which delivers a monstrous groove and Rachel May's best sultry vocal performance. Broadzilla's creativity as players and songwriters is also evident in the minimal AC/DC-like strut of "Diamond Sex Goddess" and a bluesy boogie rave-up in "On the Run." And the band opens up new future avenues for their sound in the ominous and extra-long "High Society," not to mention a brilliant cover of "Love Child" (originally by Diana Ross and the Supremes) in which the band brings out the pain and redemption of the lyrics in ways far beyond the sunny Motown delivery of the original. If you're a heavy rock fan looking for a brighter and more exciting future, Broadzilla is your new favorite band. [~doomsdayer520~]

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
