Trooper's fourth release rings like a breakthrough. If producer Buddy Miller's rolling Americana settings--a muscular approach to acoustic ensembles of mandolin, accordion, guitars, fiddle, and organ--provide a key, Trooper's songwriting, weathered to lean insights of human struggle, provides another. His melodic style is anthemic--simple three-chord grooves that afford space for the imaginative chops of Tammy Rogers, Duane Jarvis, and Miller, who throws down warm, swampy electric guitar. Trooper sounds hungry, his voice full of dark-eyed soul--reminiscent perhaps of Marc Cohn or a less cutting Steve Earle (who duets on a fantastic, bluesy reading of Dylan's "I'll Keep It with Mine," possibly the album's strongest moment). Popular Demons stands beside this year's most tasteful and catchy alternative country. --Roy Francis Kasten

No Depression
On Popular Demons ... Trooper serves notice that he's a full-fledged member of the left-of-center music community in Nashville, twangin' harder than ever before and loading up the guest list for third disc with names such as Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle.

I can't work out what this band is trying to do. There are elements of metal, punk, riot grrl, and grunge, all of which are handled in the most rudimentary way. If music is inconsequential to you and all you're looking for is a cute unconventional singer to worship, then Jack Off Jill may be the band for you. If you're looking for good tunes you won't find them here.

3 out of 5 stars I love the group............2004-10-15

I love Jack Off Jill. I have to say that much, but this is the only album I OWN! I have currently ordered "Clear Hearts, Gray Flowers" and "Covetous Creature". I don't feel right in reviewing something until I actually have the CD accessible for me to listen to. In this case, I only have this album.

First things first. The album is solid, the music is good, and her vocal's are full of pent up rage as always. Those are the good points.

The bad ones....I found the songs uninspiring, and rather bland. It doesn't seem that they put their all into this album.

Once I get the other albums, I will review those, because I know "Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers" is an amazing album in itsself.

1 out of 5 stars Instead of this, I reccomend the latest by Android Lust.......2004-01-16

On one level, I pity all the folks who think this is good music... It is neither creative nor innovative, only cliched and juvenile. This album sounds like something I would have written in high school. Not that high schoolers suck at writing...on the contrary, high school kids can be quite gifted, and these ladies are obviously not teenagers! On the other hand, and on another level, I can see how most people would like this crap. The general public has a limited idea of what good music and writing are...
I am reserving judgement on Scarling, the singer's new band, until I hear it, because I am willing to bet that Jessicka has matured as a songwriter and musician... At least she should have by now.... it's been at least 4 years... For some really moving music, check out some Shostakovich string quartets, PLEASE! America needs more educated and cultured people.

5 out of 5 stars Pure oth Rock Pop.......2004-01-15

God Damn it this title rocks
Jack off Jill are completely out of my genre Im much more of a grunge person myself but this is a record of pure goth pop melodies its impossible not like. If u dont have the the three major label Jack off Jills cds get them now.

5 out of 5 stars A great post punk joyride.......2004-01-03

Although Jack Off Jill may never have topped the charts or headlined Madison Square Garden, their contribution to gothic-alt rock as well as the Grrl Band Revolution isn't any less important.

Disbanding in 2000, they left their fans with a masterpiece, "Clear Hearts Grey Flowers". There first label release Sexless Demons & Scars (Risk) should not be discounted as anything far from great aswell.

Like I said, Sexless Demons And Scars is Jack Off Jill's first full length release on Risk Records. All songs are fun, angry, and most impressive. Though I think JOJ's vocalist outshines most of the music on this record, the results make for a great post punk joyride through candy covered wet dreams and razorblade smiles of painful nightmares!

If you like Le Tigre, Babes in Toyland, & hole BUY this record now!

5 out of 5 stars Now this, this is real grunge. .......2004-12-18

This is the magnum opus of Olympia band Earth. Dylan Carlson is the mastermind behind this mostly twosome band. He also was best friends, with Kurt Cobain... The cd is a tribute to the southern rock we love, entwined with the grunge (blues, punk, and metal) that is oh so famous from Seattle. The cd is hard and southernish, but it is more on the grunge side. This is the most real grunge is ever going to get, or at least Ive heard. It has its folk undertones, Imagine going to a festival and listening to the Aztec music on the wood flutes, and the bongos. It reminds me of middle eastern music as well. Its more of a composition, and its very well written, and meticulously put together. Dylan has the talent that Kurt Cobain had, maybe more in the composition department. I hardly hear any vocals, its mostly instrumental. They also use an organ on this record. I plan on getting others. This is a great album. It reminds me so much of Seattle. The slow, dark tones are what make me happy. And this has got it down pat. Introduction, Crooked Axis for string quartet,Tallahassee(on video), and Coda Maestoso in F (flat) minor were the songs played on the documentary Kurt& Courtney. When I listen to Introduction and Coda Maestoso, I realize that they are one in same. Except in another key. hmm

    1.Introduction 10/10
    2. High Command 8.5/10
    3. Crooked Axis for string quartet 10/10
    4.Tallahassee 10/10
    5. Charioteer (Temple song) 9/10
6.Peace in Mississippi *Jimi Hendrix cover* nicely done, I must add 10/10
    7.Sonar and Depth Charge 9.5/10
    8. Coda Maestoso in F (flat) Minor 12/10

5 out of 5 stars This album is simply,...Amazing!!!.......2003-06-11

Its like, i the whole album is brilliant! Theres heavy guitars, a hendrix song, good rythm, cool vocals (not many, which i think adds to the character of the band.... ANd finally this is a great album to get stoned to.

but dont understand the seventh song... nevermind ;)

5 out of 5 stars my only complaint is that it's not long enough........2003-03-18

i like this album a lot. it's long, engrossing, and ultimately mellow with lots of good vibes. there's something in the music that sounds like a huge airplane floating in midair, creating a loud rumbling hum that drones on and on. everything else accompanies this sort of aimless drifting happily about without a care in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Just gets better and better.......2002-10-21

This album is just a natural extension of the previous three studio albums, while being more experimental in terms of songwriting. The wonderful thing about Earth is the subtlety of their music, and how Dylan Carlson seamlessly blends 70's metal riffs, southern rock, and eastern influences into masterful songs. Some real treats on this album are the haunting "Crooked Axis For a String Quartet", the powerful "High Command", and "Coda Maestoso in F (Flat) Minor", which was used in the end credits of the "Kurt and Courtney" documentary. This is a good first album to buy if you're just getting into Earth and/or the whole drone/grunge scene; it's easier to digest than most if your just getting your feet wet. I'd also recommend their other three available albums, Phase 3: Thrones and Dominions, Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version, and Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars.

      Album Description

Deep Banana Blackout and Artkin Touchya Records are excited to announce the release of B'Gock, a CD by Deep Banana Blackout's guitar player Fuzz and his side project “On the Corner w/ Fuzz”, which features bassist Dave Shuman (who engineered both of Deep Banana Blackout's CD's ) and drummer Marc Balling. The disc is available in stores now.

The album also features guest appearances by Michael Ray (trumpet, Kool & the Gang, Sun Ra Arkestra, Cosmic Krewe), DJ Logic (turntables, Medeski Martin & Wood, Project Logic), Rob Somerville and Rob Volo (saxophone and trombone, DBB), Nate Wilson (Keys, Percy Hill), Cy Madan (Keys, DBB) and guest vocalists Jen Durkin (DBB) and Dean Bowman (Screaming Headless Torsos, Soul Trilogy).

The eclectic group of musicians have created a sound that ranges from jazz to funk, with a taste of hip-hop, and a bit of psychedelic madness. Of course there is the flavor of Banana, as the CD features a “bunch” of DBB's members, yet the disc offers something a little different than DBB's throw-down party atmosphere. Says Fuzz, “It was an opportunity for me to experiment with new musical arrangements, to play some of the standards that have influenced me over the years, and at the same time bring together some of the friends we've made over the last few years

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Fuzzy review.......2002-09-01

Deep Banana Blackout is a truly original band...from guitarist fuzz's unique guitar licks, to the drum beats. Fuzz has an awesome guitar talent, and he truly rocks the house on this album. If youre into funky jazz, buy this cd

5 out of 5 stars One of the best funk crossover albums around..........2001-09-07

This album has its foundations deep in funk, but successfully mixes in elements of jazz, rock, and even a bit of techno/hip-hop. Combining amazing guitar work with a huge guest list of top notch performers from all fields, the album renders an excellent plate full of great jams.

A lot of the songs are fairly tongue in cheek... however, always in a good way.

Its just a damned fun, damned fine album!

      4 out of 5 stars In like a lion..........2001-01-11

Although this is listed here as a DBB release, it is in fact a Fuzz "solo" project. What you have here is a very funky jazz album with DBB's Rob Volo (trombone) and Rob Somerville (sax) alongside Michael (how can you go wrong?) Ray tootin' his own horn, blended with some occasionally searing guitar work compliments of guitarist extraordinaire Fuzz, and DJ Logic putting his own inimitable spin on the groove. Don't expect to hear Jen Durkin's wailing syrup pipes (now with Bernie Worrell's Woo Warriors); there are no real vocals here to speak of with the exception of a few refrains. If you already own Rowdy Duty and are hungering for more of DBB's low down gritty funk, Live In The Thousand Islands is available through the Home Grown site (homegrownmusic.net). If you're expecting a sound comparable to that of bands like The Greyboy Allstars, Galactic, or Ulu, this for the most part has a less jammin', more traditional, jazzy flavor (with plenty of exceptional exceptions). Although it fizzles out a bit ending with the less-inspired "11:47 p.m." (to let you know it's bedtime I suppose?...sorry Dave, everyone's a critic...); any "mobster" should not be disappointed with this overall very solid effort.

5 out of 5 stars fuzz: dropping mad science.......2000-11-13

talented guitarist of funk project deep banana blackout, fuzz, manages to pull together some real jazz and funk talent on his first solo record. contributors include dj logic and members of dbb. the sound is jazz here primarily, with 4 standards covered. some songs tend towards the funk side of jazz, some are straightforward. either way, fuzz shows his studio and songwriting genius on tracks like fuzzy logic and the classic b'gock. this is just one of the best albums i've heard in the past few years. definitely buy it and wear it out while partying, reading in your room or driving around. it's one of those albums that can fit multiple moods - a sign of real greatness. thanks fuzzy

5 out of 5 stars Cutting My Kilt.......2003-12-17

This has got to be one of my all time favorite cds. I've loved every song on the album and it keeps my spirits up, ironically. Their morbid lyrics and sadistic sensualism runs right through me. I love this cd! I need to get a new one because my current one skips. *pouts* I also need to order their newest one. I haven't found it at any stores so my best bet is, of course, AMAZON. If anyone enjoys my views, email me. mylescoty@hotmail.com I really want to get intouch with people from Montana; my gf and I are moving there within the next 2-6 months. We're in WI, now.

        3 out of 5 stars Weak.......2003-03-14

i have to say, That Jack off Jill's most recent CD, "Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers" overthrows this by a mile. In this, jack off jill lost their tough chick role, by producing weak songs, in which many sound alike. Some good songs would be "Lollirot" "My Cat" "super sadist" and "girlscout". The weak songs are "american Made" "Horrible" can speak for itself and "Devil With A Black Dress Om" i do reccomend the CD, but u wont be as impressed

5 out of 5 stars A wicked piece of art!.......1998-07-31

This is a great CD! I love the vocals. Most tracks start off with little girl vocals, then turn into raging screams. I have no dislikes about this CD. Alot of bands first CD's are'nt any good, but this band started off with a bang. This is a great CD to own.

        5 out of 5 stars Near-brilliant........1998-06-24

Funny, sad, and compelling-- like moving art should be. There are many interesting social critiques about the female condition. Near-brilliant, an excellent debut.

5 out of 5 stars Monsters, Ghouls, Goblins and Demons is fantastic!.......2004-10-09

If you are looking for fun Halloween songs (ALL) from the original artists this is it. Some rare stuff for your own Halloween compilation cd or just play it at your party with "Halloween Hits" and "New Wave Halloween" and hit shuffle. The "Addams Family Theme" is the instramental, "It's Your Voo Doo Working","They're Coming to Take Me Away", "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring and "Season of the Witch" are hard to find on Halloween CD's. "TV Land PRESENTS Favorite TV Theme Songs" is a great place to find "Batman", "Munsters Theme", "Star Trek", "Addams Family" (long version) and Rod Serling's intro to "The Twilight Zone" and many other great TV tunes not related to Halloween.
