The voice that launched a thousand earnest young fare-thee-well folkies cut her teeth in the first half of the '60s at the Newport Folk Festivals. This 17-song collection allows fans of Baez to sample her star-making 1963, '64, and '65 sets. (She'd first appeared at the event as a teenager in 1959 as the teenage guest of Bob Gibson, though that milestone has apparently been lost to the ages.) Balancing comely traditionals such as "Come All Ye Fair" and "Tender Maidens" with grittier Bob Dylan tunes, Baez demonstrates how she came to define folk music for a generation of female folksingers. Duets with Dylan, Mary Travers, Peter Yarrow, and the Lilly Brothers provide some extra texture to compliment Baez's smooth-as-silk delivery. --Steven Stolder

Amazon.com essential recording

It was 1958 at the Newport Jazz Festival, and the announcer said it all: "Ladies and gentlemen, it is Sunday, and it is time for the World's Greatest Gospel Singer, Miss Mahalia Jackson." And, with that all-too-appropriate introduction, Jackson broke into a stirring rendition of "An Evening Prayer" that set the tone for a classic performance. Over the course of her 45-minute set, she performed pop-tinged numbers ("Didn't It Rain"), a few trad tunes ("I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song"), and songs immersed with soul ("Keep Your Hand on the Plow"). On all of these numbers, Jackson's voice rang loud and clear, backed simply by piano and organ. Recorded at a time when her longtime fans were questioning her increasing fame and popularity, the "Queen of Gospel" proved shiningly, once again, that she still knew how to use her God-given gift of voice. --Jason Verlinde

This is Mahalia Jackson at the peak of her career, And of all places the Newport Jazz Festival. Known for Jazz & Blues...Listen to what Mahalia does simply singing Gospel!!! The crowd was MOVED! And you will be too!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF COLUMBIA'S LEGACY HIGHLIGHTS--IN MY OPINION THE BEST REAL REISSUE.......2006-01-04

Here we hear the great artist in an original-restaured recording of the 1958 NEWPORT FESTIVAL, being in good form and having a great athmosphare.
Fortunately COLUMBIA-LEGACY found the original tapes and went on to restaure the real tapes, giving up the company's old goal to mix the live-recordings with studio-cuts to commercialize it.
Thank God the Legacy producers gave us back a time-document so precious and unique and i pray for more such holy sounds.

5 out of 5 stars It's all Good, even when it's so-so.......2005-11-07

The Queen of Gospel sings live in 1958 long before there was "MTV Unplugged". Most of the tracks are clear but a few clearly show what happens in a live concert when Ms. Jackson steps away from the microphone or claps. It's raw, powerful and un-choreographed and that's what makes this album a one of a kind. Need further proof, listen to the cheers of "more" and "Brava" at the end of tracks "Didn't It Rain" and "The Lord's Prayer". If you want a clear track of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", sorry but you'll need to buy something else of Ms. Jackson.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-12-18

Man o Man! You just have to hear this! It starts out saying, Today is Sunday and we've got the greatest Gospel Singer in the world! WOW is right! Then at the end when you hear the crowd cheering her on, it's so moving it'll make you cry.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Sound Quality Undercuts A Brilliant Performance.......2004-06-13

Born to a poor family in 1911 in New Orleans, Mahalia Jackson grew up singing in her father's church--and soaking up the blues and jazz for which that city is so famous. By the late 1920s she was in Chicago, where her distinctly jazz and blues-inflected singing style nearly got her thrown out of the Greater Salem Baptist Church. But Mahalia persevered, and in the early 1950s a series of radio and television broadcasts launched her first to national and then international acclaim. Some thirty years after her death in 1972, she is still considered the single greatest gospel singer America has ever produced.

I discovered Jackson in a serious way a year or so ago, and since then I have gone out of my way to purchase every one of her recordings that comes my way: if ever God gave breath to a gospel singer, it was to this woman, and her voice grabs you and rings you like a great bell. And after reading several commentaries on the brilliance of her 1958 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, I was particularly eager to have this one.

Sad to say, the sound quality of this recording is very, very bad. Truth be said, you can actually hear the roars of the audience with greater clarity than you can hear Jackson--and given the power of her voice that is an astonishing thing. At times it sounds as if Jackson and the microphone are at opposite ends of the stage; at other times it sounds for all the world as if Jackson is singing inside a barrel. And more than anything, the recording leaves me with a tremendous frustration--for in its occasional moments of clarity it is very obvious that Jackson was giving a truly brilliant performance.

For all the frustration involved, I do not regret this purchase. If nothing else, it gives one a very clear idea of how Jackson interacted with her audience. But even so, this not a recording I would recommend to someone just beginning to explore the work of this unique and extraordinary artist. Let it be among the last purchases of her work you make.

Although propulsive classics such as "Boogie Chillen" and "Dimples" had already established John Lee Hooker among the most electrifying artists within the blues community, his performances at the Newport Folk Festival in 1960 and '63 found him catering to the biases of a broader, younger (and whiter) audience: folk-revival fans who preferred acoustic to electric and country blues to the modern urban strain. Thus, the Detroit-based Hooker did his best to approximate the styles he'd left behind in his native Mississippi a couple of decades earlier. The brooding narrative balladry of "Tupelo" and "Great Fire of Natchez" benefits from this stripped-down approach, and Hooker feels more at liberty to change tempos and keys throughout. But the unplugged versions of staples such as "Boom Boom" barely approach the sensual swagger of Hooker at his most musically potent. This 17-cut reissue includes three previously unreleased tracks, plus another appearing for the first time on CD. --Don McLeese

John Lee Hooker is one of the pioneers of the blues together with BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and others. His performance at Newport is the start of his career in Europe in the sixties. Because people did hear the LP. A few years later he came to Europe. He inspired Harry Muskee, the leader of the best bluesband of The Netherlands, Cuby and The Blizzards (C+B). Do you like to hear a white man (Harry) sing the blues like a black man (JL)? Buy the CD of C+B: Boom Boom Bang In The Spirit Of John Lee Hooker (2003) and the CD Groeten uit Grolloo (1967).

    4 out of 5 stars Overall a great recording.......2001-09-11

This is the first recording I have by this artist and I think it is a great recording over all. He sings songs that I really enjoy like "Draft Dodger Rag," and "Pleasures of the harbor." The sound quality is so clear that it makes me feel as though I am actually attending the concert. The only thing that I would have against this recording is that there are too many songs that talk about murder and tragedy like "talking Birmingham Jam." I would recommend this recording to anyone who is not familiar with his music or those who enjoy him and want to try out other recordings.

this cd represents herbie manns' talents at the height of his career. it is one of his most prolific works. the back-up musicians complement his style perfectly, making this one of his most enjoyable offerings.

5 out of 5 stars From when bossa nova was, well, nova.......2001-12-01

This is one of my favorite bossa nova albums, from a time when that music was still fresh and exciting (complete with Herbie blowing a note or two). I too am glad it's back in print because I wore out my vinyl copy. Easily the best version of Desafinado ever. Jobim's other standard on this album, Girl from Ipanema, gets a nice treatment as well. The treatment of Soft Winds is intriguing because it's kind of a pre-Memphis Underground bossa nova bop. The same is true for Don't You Know, which is also funky before funk was invented. If you're choosing between this and the 1966 album, New Mann at Newport, choose this one. Or both.

4 out of 5 stars I'm SO glad this is back in print!!!!.......2001-11-15

This is one of those albums that slipped through the cracks for years. Atlantic/Rhino's jazz re-issue department has been completely lax, with the exception of the Mingus/Coltrane/Ornette stuff, which they have every reason to be proud of. But in doing their best to get that stuff out, deserving albums by Eddie Harris and Herbie Mann have stayed out of print. Thank God for these smaller labels that are making everything available again!!! This album features some prime latin Herbie Mann, and the song Don't You Know has been a favorite for years. I have had access to the vinyl, but you can't play the vinyl in your car on the way to a gig, so I've always been kinda bummed that this one never saw the light of day. Until now! Wooo!! I'm so excited to see this one in print again!!

4 out of 5 stars A golden voice matched with moving songs.......1999-10-25

When I popped this CD into the player for the first time, I simply fell back and said, "Wow." Joan Baez has a great voice and she delivers the songs on this CD with heartfelt emotion. It is a great CD. The only drawback is that on one or two cuts you can hear (if you listen very carefully) some crowd noise, otherwise the sound is outstanding. Her duet with Mary Travers on "Lonesome Valley" is moving. Her duets with Dylan are only OK because their singing styles don't compliment each other. I would recommend this CD if you like any acoustic stuff that the Cranberries have done. Why? Because Dolores O'Riordan's range is similar (but not quite as extensive) as Joan Baez's range. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent historical recordings.......1999-10-05

Fine material and performances. Liner notes could be better, though : it would be nice to know at which years' festival each of these recordings were made.

Subtitled Live at Newport and More, Linger Awhile balances eight previously unreleased tracks from Vaughan's performance at the legendary 1957 Newport Jazz Festival with eight alternate takes from her late '70s and early '80s albums for the Pablo label. Vaughan was at the peak of her popular success during the earlier recordings. Backed by the trio of pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes, she bounces as ebulliently as Ella Fitzgerald through the second verse of "All of Me" and echoes Billie Holiday's phrasing on "Black Coffee." The contrast between the youthful Sassy and the mature diva heard over 20 years later is startling. Vaughan's voice has deepened to an almost androgynous baritone, and each song holds an earthy majesty and effortless virtuosity. Vaughan is joined by a variety of all-star rhythm sections, not to mention the Count Basie Orchestra on two tracks. You may want to linger awhile with the early recordings, but her true greatness is evident in the later tracks. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album features Vaughan in both 1957 and 1982........2004-11-12

In 1999, Pablo Records released a unique album featuring eight, previously unissued tracks recorded by Sarah Vaughan at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957, and another eight tracks, also unissued, recorded in studios between 1978 and 1982. In 1957, Vaughan was a young, 33-year-old megastar; in 1982, she was a mature jazz singer who had seen it all. Though Vaughan's voice remains a wondrous instrument at both stages of her career, the changes over the course of twenty-five years are astonishing. With the "two voices" side by side on this album, lovers of Sarah Vaughan can see for themselves how a young singer whose high range soared into the stratosphere developed into a mature, husky-voiced jazz singer famous for her lower range.

In the early songs, Vaughan sounds young, lively, and excited to be in Newport. With simple accompaniments provided by Jimmy Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums, she has fun with standards, singing "The Masquerade is Over" as a moody, sad song, and wailing at the end, and "Black Coffee" in slow, bluesy tempo, vamping with her lovely vibrato. In "Poor Butterfly," one of her signature songs, she plays with the melody, changing keys, slowing the tempo, and paying particular attention to the narrative, and on "Linger Awhile" and "Sometimes I'm Happy," she is up and down and all over her range (missing one high note in the latter song), her voice so high she sounds more like Ella Fitzgerald than the deep-voiced Sarah Vaughan of her later career.

The remaining eight songs, from 1978 - 82, are alternate versions of songs for which other versions became the master recordings. These are in no way inferior--just different--and "I Got It Bad," recorded here originally for the "Duke Ellington Songbook," is the best version of that song I've ever heard. Here Sarah sounds as if she's been through it all, her voice huskier, smokier, and altogether bigger. She soars and dips, is jazzier, more confident, and more powerful. She holds her own against solos on trumpet, sax, and piano, which parallel her own jazz interpretations.

On "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart," she improvises. On "I'm Just a Lucky So and So," she is ironic, giving a bluesy interpretation and wailing at the end. In "Teach Me Tonight," she is playful and sexy, and in "Just Friends," she sings scat in concert with a saxophone. A unique album, this shows Sarah's career from beginning to end--glorious any way you look at it. Mary Whipple

        4 out of 5 stars It's Sarah!.......2000-05-04

Although it's not hard to see why these were passed over in favor of the master takes which sound fresher and more inspired than these alternates, it's still great.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Live Albums.......2004-01-27

This is a wonderful live album. Recorded toward the end of Ella's career, by concert's end it is apparent that she has about lost her voice, but not the audience's adoration. The album showcases her in various settings: with the (obviously) reconstituted Chick Webb Orchestra, with Ellis Larkins, with Joe Pass and with Tommy Flanagan (of course); the album also has some nods to the Webb Orchestra, noteworthy for late-career blowing by "Lockjaw" Davis. Highlights: "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "Good Morning Heartache" (an intended and most worthy tribute to Lady Day), "Miss Otis Regrets," the first encore of "Some of these Days," and intended set-ender of Ella doing what she does best, scatting through "Lemon Drop." I loved this when it came out on l.p., 30 years ago, but I love the c.d. even more because it better captures the ambience of this "Lioness in Winter" concert. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars There are some gems here.......2001-11-01

This a two-cd set, and despite the fact that the title makes you think it's all Ella, it's not. She sings a number or two at the beginning and then comes back for the second set of the evening. The rest of Disk 1 is a recreation of the Chick Webb band (where Ella got her start) and has some good moments. Disk 2 contains most of Ella's songs. Carmen MacRae gives Ella a warm introduction, and you can tell that they respected one another. There are some contemporary and pop songs that I enjoyed ("What's Going On?" by Marvin Gaye, for example) but that I can understand that a jazz purist would dislike. For me the reason to get this is her interpretation of "Good Morning Heartache." It's fabulous. I personally think it is as good as Billie's. It's much more musical than Billie's version, and yet Ella also brings out the ache and longing of the words. She is really passionate here, and the audience goes crazy at the end. I would have too, had I been there. Her performance is great. Ella sang this song in the studio in the early sixties, but this live version is by far the better. Her version of "Down in the Depths" here is quite good too. And she sings the Streisand standard "People" with an honesty, simplicity, and purity that would totally elude Barbra. If you love Ella, as I do, then I would tell you to buy this.

        4 out of 5 stars a relatively little-known Fitzgerald treasure.......2001-07-15

These live duets with Joe Pass and, even more wonderful, with Ellis Larkins are for me among the highlights of Ella's amazing career. The subtlety, imagination, and ease of these performances have stayed in my mind for over twenty years. Not everything on these discs is up to this standard, though the sleepy, sensual phrasing of INDIAN SUMMER, glowing with pleasure, is pretty amazing too.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice overview of her career.......2000-02-14

This two-disk set catches Ella at the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival (in New York City) and offers a nice overview of her career. The event was billed as a tribute of sorts and fortunately the singer in very good voice right at the start of her Pablo years. The first disk features some big band sides by a reconstituted Chick Webb Orchestra and includes the inevitable "A-Tisket-A-Tasket." Ella reprises her duets with pianist Ellis Larkins on three tunes. The second disk is a typical Fitzgerald set with the Tommy Flanagan Quartet from this period of her career. Despite a couple of questionable tunes ("I Gotta Be Me" and "What's Going On"), Ella is in very good form throughout, especially on three duets with guitarist Joe Pass and when she goes away from the prepared playlist with "Any Old Blues." The highlight for jazz fans is the scat feature on "Lemon Drop." The adoring crowd welcomes Ella back for encores on "Some of These Days" and "People." The voice may wobble in spots, but the occasion and the obvious public affection for the First Lady of Song make the set an essential introduction to the later stage of her career.
