Beyond the Sky is the third and finest of the collaborations between Turkish musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek and American guitarist, producer, and composer Brian Keane. This time out, they were inspired by Bernardo Bertolucci's film, The Sheltering Sky, based on Paul Bowles's novel. The arrangements are lusher, the moods are deeper, and Tekbilek's playing is more soulful than ever on this evocative and emotionally charged recording. Even more than Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for The Sheltering Sky does, this music calls up images of the North African desert, the spiraling minarets of Islamic mosques, and the heat of Middle Eastern sensuality.
The two musicians are joined on this album by three other great players. Ara Dinkjian plays the oud and Arto Tuncboyaci is a master of Middle Eastern percussion. Both of these Armenian musicians were members of the group Night Ark. Also climbing aboard this caravan is Hassan Isikkut, a Turkish master of the kanun, a zither instrument. With Keane's subtle synthesizer arrangements, the music is exhilarating in its rhythmic intensity and virtuoso showmanship on a track such as "Imaginary Traveler," and searing and sensual in its spiritual passion on "Kolyami." --John Diliberto

Amazon.com essential recording
This subtle, sublime collaboration finds bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Pat Metheny crafting bejeweled chamber duets that transcend genre. With their shared Missouri lineage as a thematic touchstone, Haden and Metheny forge a lyrical, mostly acoustic style at once intimate and expansive. Both pare their playing to a Zen-like economy, focusing on a purity of tone, clarity of harmony, and counterpoint to achieve a tender lyricism.
Metheny's acoustic steel-string and classical guitars predominate, but he also applies discreet overdubs (including some delicate synthesizer and keyboard textures) to sculpt orchestral detail. Haden, as always, is both a generous foil and a deft melodist on his own, moving easily into his instrument's upper register as he twines through Metheny's lines. The set's emotional coherence is particularly satisfying in light of the material, which spans Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso"), Henry Mancini ("Two for the Road"), Jim Webb ("The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress"), and Roy Acuff ("The Precious Jewel") as well as affecting originals by both leaders. And giving the project a sense of closure, while commenting obliquely on the generational dialogue it represents, is the luminous "Spiritual" (composed by Haden's son, Josh), an instrumental prayer that exemplifies the balance of concision and deep emotion at the heart of this exquisite triumph. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
pure harmony.......2007-07-07
An intimate, sometimes haunting, always soothing compilation of melodious tracks by two masters. The focus is introspective yet sophisticated; it is a subtle, lyrical synthesis of dreamy acoustic guitar and bass.
Haden's bass lines twine and insinuate through the familiar Metheny guitar work; this is real mellow winding-down music, better than evening cocktails.
These tracks are only vaguely jazz-like; really, this music is genre transcending. Great stuff as background music to read or write by. If only more of reality was this smooth . . .
Highly recommended.

perfect late night cd........2007-01-16
reading & music go together like wine & cheese at my house. since most of my reading is done later in the evening, i am always looking for great music on the quieter side (the stooges, husker du, etc... will not do at midnight). this is one of my favorite late night recordings. I can't recommend it highly enough. Metheny's guitar & Haden's bass work up perfection on these melodies. Each track is a gem. Can't wait to give it yet another listen.
One of most my treasured records.......2007-01-06
I often return to this recording. It's simply sublime. The interplay between the players is beyond words, and the last song "Spiritual" is just that. Gives me goose bumbs everytime I hear it. A great record for falling asleep to, or having a quiet evening with someone you love. I can't recommend it enough. I'm not a huge fan of Pat's 80's new agey sounding stuff, but "Beyond the Missouri Sky" is amazing. I've enjoyed several Charile Haden records as well. I can't believe that this record is buried as cd #38 on amazon when one types in Pat Metheny. To me it should be the first one up, even before his first three records.
sensual.......2006-12-21
I heard the last track on this album one day on the radio. It is a fabulously beautiful music. So I got the album. The rest of the album is very nice, but the last track turned out to remain my absolute favorite. Beautiful CD packaging too.

Album Description
The soulful and spirited music of
Beyond the Sky transports the listener to exotic regions of the Mediterranean, Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. This collaboration brings back the symbiotic duo of Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek, along with three other remarkable musicians. Together, they navigate a timeless path of mystery, excitement and energy, dense with the imagery of an ancient landscape.
The exceptional interaction of the musicians produce a spontaneous emotion, on both the original pieces they wrote for this recording, and the traditional Middle Eastern melodies they adapted. There is a good deal of improvisation, based on modal and rhythmic cues, updating standard tunes perhaps a thousand years old. Amidst the Middle Eastern harmonies, the listener catches whiffs of Moroccan and even Afro-Cuban styles.
Beyond the Sky weaves a Middle Eastern fusion of cultural influences.

Beyond the Sky.......2007-04-09
This is the third album that I purchased done by Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek and it is the best yet!!! Relaxing and mysterious it is something I would recommend for someone who is tired of listening to the same old jazz or rock and roll. SUPER!!
Great work by Omar Faruk/Brian Keane!!!.......2006-03-27
A friend gave me this album to listen to as I told him that I like Sufi music. I half-expected religious chants etc., but I was pleasantly surprised when I started listening to all the tracks. Initially, it didn't sound very emotionally appealing but after a few listens, I just got hooked onto this album. I love the following tracks - Imaginary Traveller, Nighttime, Sweet Trouble, Siseler, and the title track. I especially love Nighttime and Sweet Trouble for their soothing melody (I go crazy listening to the mandolin-type instrument bit in both songs). Overall, a very remarkable effort by both artists. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who has an ear for world music.
WHAT I CALL DESERT MUSIC: TWO GREATS.......2005-07-15
This is what I call "desert music". Two greats teaming together: Brian Keane (anything he does is great) and Omar Tekbilek (same) are my favorites. This is tremendous album.
Outstanding.......2003-06-10
A fantastic CD, I can not speak highly enough about it. Track #2 Imaginary Traveler is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, it's a masterpiece. Sample it for yourself.
Takes you to another place...........2003-06-02
I am an avid fan of world music. This CD contains the most amazing music I have ever heard. It is the kind of music that speaks right to your soul. Track number 3 "Kolaymi" is beautiful. If only I could find a person who could make me feel the way this song does.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Album! One of my favorites of all-time!.......2004-07-29
Iona are a band from the British Isles. Their overall sound is so dynamic it consists of many different styles of music such as Celtic folk, progressive rock, and new age. Before I get into the musical aspect of this album I want to mention the incredible musicians in this band which are:
Dave Bainbridge - guitar, keyboards, programming, string arrangements
Joanne Hogg - vocals, keyboards, acoustic guitar
Mike Haughton - soprano/alto/tenor saxophones, flute, recorder
Nike Beggs - chapman stick, wal 5 fretted and fretless bass, ashbury bass
Terl Bryant - drums and percussion
Guest musicians on "Beyond These Shores"
Troy Donockley - uilleann pipes, low whistles, e-bow guitar
Peter Whitfield - violin, viola
Robert Fripp - guitar and Frippertronics
Frank van Essen - solo violins
Debbie Bainbridge - oboe
Fiona Davidson - Celtic harp
String Ensemble - Francis Cummings - violin, Mansell Morgan - violin, Richard Williamson - viola, Anna Frazer - cello, Christopher Hoyle - cello, Rebecca Whettan - cello
The music in this album is very much in the vein of Celtic progressive rock with a new age edge to it. There are many songs on this album that had my jaw dropped completely because I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. This album is so hard to review because EVERY song on this album is fantastic! Some real highlights for me were the following songs:
"Treasure" - what can I say other than this could easily have been a Grammy winner, in fact this whole album should have won one something
"Edge of the World" - a really soft ballad, beautiful vocals and a great underlying melody
"Bird of Heaven" - an epic song with so many dynamics that it's hard to describe the power of this one, there such a beautiful solo by Dave Bainbridge on this song....I would go as far as to say this is my favorite Iona song of all time
"Burning Like Fire" - another very progressive pop type song, great melody with an undercurrent of synths and yet another Dave Bainbridge solo that he just smokes and reminds me of Allan Holdsworth in the beginning of the solo the way he just rips right into it
"Beachy Head" - fantastic song, I love the way this song was arranged or orchestrated, the instrumentation with the string ensemble was just amazing, great sax playing from Mike Haughton
I really liked the whole album. I mean this is one of those desert island albums to me. I don't think I can live without this album at all. Listen with an open mind and make sure you listen to everything going on within the music. This album has some really incredible things happening. Can you hear what I hear? If you do then you'll be listening to this album for a long time. This album and "The Book of Kells" are the best albums by this band and I have most of their albums and those two really impressed me the most and left me wanting more.

AWESOME.......2006-11-11
I got this for my grand daughter and decided to open it un and listen it to it before I sent it to her. I loved it so much that I kept this copy for myself and bought another one for her. I also bought one to give as a baby shower gift! The songs and music on these CD's are just so nice! I find them VERY relaxing and peaceful. I think this should be a must for every baby. My grand daughter loves it. It immediately calms down a fussy baby. You can't put a price on that!
Calming and Soothing for your little love.......2005-05-19
I love this CD collection. My son loves to cuddle and listen to soothing and dulcet tones of the author reading the story. By the second track he is getting drowsy and by 5th one, the eyes are closed. It's the only CD that keeps him entertained till he falls asleep in the crib. The other CD's are great at stopping cranky moods. I don't know what it is about this collection but it's just made for little ears!

One of the great unknown jazz originals.......2003-01-05
I love jazz.
Not least because of artists like Yusef Lateef. Here's a man who's been making brilliant music basically in near total obscurity since the late '50s. Yes, he had his day in the sun (he was once a major artist in the Atlantic stable), but since he began his forty + year sojourn down paths of Eastern-tinged jazz, founded his own label, and basically thumbed his nose at the jazz establishment, he has eschewed commercial success and pursued his own ideosyncratic and glorious vision.
Beyond the Sky strikes me as one of his most fully realized discs to date. Indeed, this is one of a handful of absolute great world jazz albums, including Sanfona by Egberto Gismonti, Vira Loucas, by Cyro Baptista, and The Invisible, by Peter Epstein.
What I love about Beyond the Sky, and what sets it appart from other great world jazz outings, is the depth of its jazz concept perfectly melded to an unimpeachable world music esthetic that encompasses a huge variety of world musics, from African, to East Indian, to Oriental, to American Indian. It thus becomes a kind of world jazz ambassadorial kind of thing, able to communicate with ease in any number of authentic world jazz idioms.
Part of it is that three core members of this group--Lateef, Adam Rudolf, and Ralph Jones--have been perfecting this approach as an ensemble for more than a decade. They thus operate at a level of musical compatibility and comraderie that is nothing short of uncanny. Marc Helias (wrongly rendered as "Helais") on acoustic bass produces some of the deepest and most thoughtful rhythmic underpinnings to be found on jazz recordings. Joseph Bowie on trombone and a variety of percussion is simply magnificent, as is Charles Moore on trumpet and other assorted instruments. I have no previous familiarity with the other players, but Alex Marcelo on piano fits perfectly into these memorable musical soundscapes. And electro-acoustic computer and guitarist M. Abidh Waugh consistently adds beautiful coloration and wry musicality to the proceedings.
One of the reasons for the spectacular success of this disc is the uncanny fluidity and versatility of the players. All told, the eight performers play more than 39 different instruments, including such rarities as the deeraphone, moan flute, hichiriki, batajon, djun-djun, and karinya. Amazingly, nothing sounds exotic for exoticness' sake: everything is seemlessly integrated into a simply glorious sound signature.
Especially evocative is the Lateef composition "Iqbal Remembered," one of the most mysterious, mesmerizing musical experiences I have ever encountered.
The more I listen to this, the more I am becoming convinced that it is the greatest ever world jazz album. If you have even the slightest affinity for music of this type, DO NOT MISS THIS DISC.

POWER TRIO / HEAVY BLUES ROCK BLISS.......2006-05-25
Imagine a cross between FREE / GOVERNMENT MULE and HENDRIX and you'd be close. Awesome tracks that capture the essence of the best of POWER TRIO ROCK without sounding retro or jaded. YNGSTROM is an incredible guitarist that covers HENDRIX as well or better than anyone, but here he also shows what a great writer / musiscian he is in his own right. Memorable musik with unforgettable guitar work, whats not to like.
If you are into the guitar, this has to be in your collection.
I have just bought a package of GROOVEYARD releases and urge anyone with a passion for the guitar to do the same. JOE ROMAGNOLA ( of GROOVEYARD ) is one of the few people in the musik business that keeps the guitar alive. If you are passionate about real musik in general and the guitar specificaly, support this label.

More good stuff! But reissue of Higher Octave title of 1990........2003-04-03
Be careful! While this album is very nice and lyrical, it is a reissue of an earlier Higher Octave release from 1990. The track listing is the same, except on the previous CD track 5 is called "Over the Hills".

Each and every song a jewel.......2005-09-09
I was given this CD when my son was born in 2003, and it truly has become the soundtrack to his life thus far. I can't reminisce about his babyhood without Alex Degrassi's melodies woven therein. Each and every song is a jewel: calming, relaxing, soothing (but Boo Mamba is my personal favorite). I was really disappointed to learn that this CD was going out of print, since I've given a copy to every single baby born in my family and circle of friends since it was given to me. It's definitely worth buying used, and even if someone is asking $20-odd for it, BUY IT!
