Danú are a resolutely acoustic yet freewheeling Irish traditional ensemble. Their arrangements are often crowned by treble fiddle lines typical of early Chieftains, but their rhythmic attack, while precisely marked, is less literal and is periodically side-swiped by playful bursts of syncopation. Lead singer Ciaran O' Gealbhain is a revelation. His vocals, whether in Irish or English, are haunted by ancient sean-nós, but also recall the Incredible String Band and the naive sophistication of Brady and Irvine's nonpareil "purple album." O' Gealbhain appears as soloist and in unison on the wistful, bouzouki-laced "Easy and Free." His approach to the giddy "Uncle Rat" is deft and childlike, but he is romance incarnate on "The Wee Lass on the Brae" and breathes serene, poetic stillness into "Idir Aird Mhor Is Eochaill." Producer Joe McKenna flawlessly captures the sonic ambiance of every tune, down to the final afterglow of living drone. --Christina Roden

Album Description
Miracles DO happen! Although singer-songwriter and musical activist Pat Humphries created a stir in the folk world with her first album, 1992's "Same Rain," it took nine years before the release of "Hands," its follow-up. Then, more than a year after "Hands'" January 2001 release, the CD suddenly spent three days as the best-selling CD for Amazon.com, the Internet's most popular music store. What triggered the rush of sales was a feature on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" about Pat's composition, "Swimming to the Other Side," which first appeared on her debut and then in a re-recorded version (broadcasted by NPR) on "Hands." This song of hope and determination had become, like Pat's "Common Thread" and "Never Turning Back," a ubiquitous folk anthem sung at peace and social justice rallies and demonstrations around the world and was translated into seven languages. Pat Humphries is no longer a secret in her homeland. No less an authority than Pete Seeger called Pat's songs "some of the best I've heard in 50 years," and the material on "Hands" validates Pete's praise. "No Sweat" and "Cold Cup of Water" respectively examine the plight of workers in Third World sweat shops and migrant workers here in the States. Social issues of gay and straight parenting are addressed in "I'll Be There" and "People Love"; women's rights are the subject of Pat's cover versions of "Bread & Roses" and "We Were There." Pat wrote "Bound for Freedom" for a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and bears the central message, "We are one and we are all." The CD's pro-labor title track was written but never released by Phil Ochs before his 1976 suicide. These rallying cries of optimism and activism are sung warmly and without affectation by Pat, who also plays guitar on most tracks. She is accompanied by the "world music" pioneer David Amram (woodwinds, percussion), renowned fiddler Jay Ungar, and veteran folk duo Kim and Reggie Harris on backing vocals; the CD's producer, Abby Newton, contributes cello to "Swimming to the Other Side," among other songs.

Super Folk Music.......2006-08-23
There is not a song on this CD that will not move the true folkie heart. Nothing fancy, just clear, clean, meaningful lyrics accompanied by great acoustic guitar. I'll be purchasing more music by Pat Humphries. I highly reccomend this product.
A breakthrough song and otherwise solid folk.......2002-08-30
I bought HANDS after being introduced to Pat Humphries and "Swimming to the Other Side" in a feature on NPR. Like the correspondent said, the song grabs you. When HANDS arrived, I plunked it on the CD player and it instantly pulled me back a few decades to when folkies ruled and we all had to have guitars like them, back to Pete Seger and Woody Guthrie, back to the early Bob Dylan, back to reading John Steinbeck in school, back to when there was social awareness and liberal was not a bad word. She infuses the tradition with a fresh zest. "Swimming to the Other Side," remains my favorite on this album, though an informed folk devotee might say some of the other songs, especially the titular "Hands," are just as worthy. "Swimming to the Other Side" has a simple tune that lends itself to variations and its lyrics tap into our 21st century zeitgeist. We are living in scary times, we are trying to make it to the other side. There is uplift but no denial in this song.
Beautiful music full of life, love, losses and lessons.......2002-07-30
When my niece and I ride in the car together she always asks for "Pat" [Hands]and for track # 9: "I'll Be There". It seems to make her feel secure and safe. And we talk about being able to tell Mommy or Auntie Anne ANYTHING. People Love is just a wonderful reflection of healthy loving. No Sweat and Cold Cup of Water make our blood dance with wanting to right all the wrongs of the world. Pat's beautiful Swimming to the Other Side celebrates our unity in our diversity on the earth. This album is a friend to us, familiar, challenging, loving, anguished, peaceful.
Amazing! Makes me want to get out and march!.......2002-07-08
This is an album such that I have not heard in many years. Her harmonies, The words and melodies make me wwant to do something to change the world and do it NOW. Now all I have to do is locate her first album!
Beautiful!.......2002-05-31
Haven't heard music like this since the 60's - It is great to see someone still cares about others.

brand new favourite.......2006-01-01
Oh God, what is this music? Is this acoustic folk, no, angry folk like Ani, no, acoustic indie fok-rock, no, jazz-blues, no. This is all in one and in original Holly Figueroa style. Fantastic drums and bass structure in high fidelity sound quality with acoustic and electric guitars accompaniment is back Holly' fine vocal. One of them is acoustic solo with one guitar but one of them is pure electric jazz. Colorfull and very attractive arranging with lyrical poetry.
Ani Di Franco is "Not A Pretty Girl" but Holly Figueroa is "A Really Pretty Woman"!
This is my first Holly' CD but not the last one! Highly recommend anybody who loves the good music.
I can't tell you how much this CD means to me.......2002-01-08
Words do not do this CD justice, you have to hear the music. Holly has the uncanny and rare ability to tell a story, break your heart, and make you laugh all in the same song. I heard Dream in Red on 'All Things Considered' last year and fell in love with Holly's voice, but lyrically is where she really shines. She wrote the song 'Dream in Red' in answer to John Krakauer's book "Into the Wild", which I also love. She belongs on center stage with the best songwriters, and its a shame that she isn't better known yet, but when she is I'll be proud to say that "I knew her when!". I highly recommend this CD to anyone searching for more than the usual crap on the radio.

Customer Reviews:
Just more fabulous music from this brilliant band.......2007-04-01
As a long time lover of Celtic music, from The Clancy Bros, to The Dubliners, to The Bothy Band and on and on, and an amateur folk muso for 40+ years, Danu must be one of the best groups of this genre I've heard. Their arrangements are superb - gentle, full and rich, their instrumentation sensational, I could go on... (and I haven't got shares in their distillery). If you're an Irish music afficionado you will not be disappointed. I just wish they'd come out to my part of the world !!!
Absolute BEST Of Irish Trad.......2003-12-27
Folks, it doesn't get any better than this! Danu is what the other trad bands are trying to be. Imagine the skill of the Chieftains (and a similarly traditional repertoire), then add youth and energy and a voice that will give you goosebumps! They also have the best bodhran player I've ever heard. Their ensemble playing is crisp and precise, spirited and lively. Their choice of material includes many traditional tunes you won't have heard before, very refreshing (how many times can you listen to "Drowsy Maggie" before you get fed up?)
Regarding the previous reviews, I wholeheartedly echo the folks who say GO SEE DANU LIVE. Not to be missed, what a show! But I must disagree with the person who said Ciaran O Gealbhain has "old-man roughness" to his voice. Not at all. Gorgeous, clear, choir-boy-grown-up is more like it. Can bring a room of rowdy intoxicated people to complete silence. Stunning.
This is the CD to give as a gift to friends who are not familiar with Irish music. You'll have instant converts after one listen!
Traditional, accoustic, excellent Irish Music........2003-02-01
Failte! (Greetings). I am very happy to see the McKennas involved in such productions as Danu. This is a young group of musicians that are true to their Irish roots with accoustic instruments. The strongest trait is the team work demonstrated in two or three instrument leads ( Flute, Button Accordian, Fiddle, Ullieann Pipes), counterpoint Bouzouki, Mandola, Guitar), all of which is energized through the reels with Bodhran. The album takes you through toe tapping with the fast instrumentals to karoake crying in your stout time with vocals. Donnchadh Gough is excellent on Irish Drum, and is the driving pace setter through the reels. In recent performances, Donnchadh has had a new deep voiced, Brendan White bodhran that adds to his excellent playing. Tom Doorley's excellent flute playing gives me fond memories of Joe McKenna's playing over more than two decades. If your taste is the real, legitimate Irish, you need to have all three Danu CD's. If the first album was a testament to the potential of a young, new group, their third album is a testament to that potential being realized. They have their own wonderful website with a "fun" page poking fun at themselves. Don't miss the photo of the button accordian player in the bubble bath tub! If the Danu members can stick together and keep playing like this, I will be happy to buy all of their future albums. Ceol de Erin go bragh! (Music of Ireland forever!)
A very magnetic group!.......2002-09-10
I saw Danu at the Cambridge Folk Festival a couple of years ago and they were delightfully energetic and intense, not to mention musical masters. They seemed to vibrate on stage, like candles in a wind. Their arrangements and solos are delightful. If you like celtic music, this could easliy deserve to be in your collection. Their flautist is to die for.
Danu--All Things.......2002-06-04
I own nearly 40 Irish CDs including some Irish imports that you can't get so easily here. What impresses me with Danu is the wonderful sense of "flow" with each rhythmic pulse that puts you at ease. Check out track 8 if you like fabulous unison playing. This album was my first choice, but to be sure, that nice flow can be found in all their work.

I have known the lead for several years now and gone to see him play when it was just him, I knew he would make it, and he has! It will be big. His voice is just awesome! This guys are going somewhere. The CD is excellent with lots of fresh, catchy songs. I especially like "That Would Be Me" and "There's Only One" along with UNTAMED!!
