5 out of 5 stars Great collection of Scott Joplin's piano rags.......2007-08-02

John Arpin delivers excellent performances of Joplin's rags. Not too much interpretation and not a flat presentation exhibited by piano rolls. Perfect for me. I believe Arpin has truly captured Joplin's essence.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

Album Description

Bud's first two Blue Note dates are here in complete form. The 1949 session features the horns of Fats Navarro and Sonny Rollins (making his recording debut) on such be-bop anthems as "Bouncing With Bud" and "Dance Of The Infidels". This 1951 trio session with Curly Russell and Max Roach introduced "Un Poco Loco" and "Parisian Thoroughfare". Personnel: FATS NAVARRO, trumpet; SONNY ROLLINS, tenor sax; BUD POWELL, piano; TOMMY POTTER, bass; ROY HAYNES, drums (#1-11). BUD POWELL, piano; CURLY RUSSELL, bass; MAX ROACH, drums (#12-20).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Digging for Treasure.......2007-04-13

I'm fairly new to jazz and still hunting for treasures. Bud Powell influenced my hero Bill Evans and came recommended by jazz piano guru Mark Levine, so he deserved a listen. First impressions of this CD (before listening) were mixed. Expecting just piano trio cuts, I found the presence of quintet cuts disappointing (until I heard them). Alternate takes are scattered about on the CD, so listening straight through original album cuts requires conscious effort. On the bright side, the liner notes are interesting and frank, unlike some of the gushing in some CD's. If anything, they linger too long on the sensational details of Bud's troubled personal life.

The CD has been digitally re-mastered and white noise hiss is virtually absent. The great horn players bury the piano a bit on the quintet tracks. The trio tracks sound brighter, with more prominent piano. Bud's moaning is particularly noticeable on the trio cuts.

Bud was an innovator of style and a master of technique, yet more tasteful to my ears than Monk, Gillespie and Parker when pushing the envelope. He kept a coherent attitude throughout a song, whether playing a simple ballad, a harmonically rich original, or an over-the-top standard interpretation. Whereas Monk might use dissonances to "startle", Bud seems to use them throughout a song to set a mood. On the twelve quintet cuts, Bud has great give-and-take with Rollins and Navarro. The Russell/Roach rhythm section takes up the slack from the horns in the trio selections. The trio tracks venture well beyond bop into some interesting new territory. Powell runs the gamut of styles and emotions, whether swinging with Parker or Gillespie tunes, settling into a sweet ballad, or pulling out all the stops for a positively manic Somewhere Over the Rainbow solo. This CD is a joy from start to finish - definitely a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-11-02

The opener, "Bouncing with Bud" is one of my top 5 favorite jazz tunes. It's absolutely infectious, as is this entire album. Powell is in great form and with sidemen like Sonny Rollins(only 19 at this time)and the great(and severely underrated)Fats Navarro on horns you just can't lose.

Because of his mental problems Bud had a scattered recording career. This cd is full of highlights and not to be missed. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, and Quite Possibly Divine.......2005-05-21

If you plan to invest in the complete "Amazing" series, then this is the place to start. Bud is the matrix of modern jazz piano, the Bird of the piano, the reason pianists began to speak about "blowing piano" rather than "playing" it.

On the other hand, if this is going to be your only disc representing Powell's inarguable genius, you may wish to consider a representative anthology. "The Definitive" and "The Ultimate Bud Powell" (compiled by Chic Corea) are both worthy collections, but the best bet is still the oop "The Best of Bud Powell: The Blue Note Years." Once you hear "Bud on Bach" you'll have a better understanding of the sublime baroque design of Bud's inventiveness at its apex.

I hesitate to suggest why Powell is so important--especially after reviewing another Powell recording and being chastized by subsequent reviewers for stopping short of complete idolatry of every aspect of his playing (maybe I'm monotheistic--jazz has traditionally recognized Art Tatum as the "God in the House"). Without commenting on his harmonic progressions and left-hand voicings, I feel safe in making the following claim: no pianist's right hand has combined such a lightning-fast, limitless melodic imagination with an equally impressive, dazzling yet flowing, rhythmic complexity. To listen to the brilliance of the playing on "Parisian Thoroughfare," only to have the self-critical Powell stop mid-stream and instruct the engineers to "cut it," is a supremely insightful moment into the mind of a superior creative being.

If the above is controversial because it's insufficient in its praise, I'm cheered that there are still listeners who care enough about Bud to insist on his deification. His music is certainly deserving of continued respect if not reverence.

5 out of 5 stars 2 sides of Bud........2005-01-05

Tracks 1 - 11: Fats Navarro - trumpet, Sonny Rollins - tenor sax, Bud Powell - piano, Tommy Potter - bass, Roy Haynes - drums. Recorded in 1949.

Tracks 12 - 20: Bud Powell - piano, Curley Russell - bass, Max Roach - drums. Recorded in 1951.

What can really be said about this album? It's almost easier to write about bad music than it is about great music. The whole higher purpose of music (with or without lyrics) is to express that which words cannot do justice, so how can anyone truly do any justice to great music by talking about it? I can't, but I try... if only for the sake of helping other people buy (or not) this or that disc.

Bud and friends are absolutely killin here! One the one hand, the larger band tracks have a certain lovelyness to them simply because everyone shines. Having Fats and Sonny there adds a whole different feel to the music, and more variety. You know there is a whole lot of melody going on with Fats and Sonny there! Of course there is also something to be said for the lean trio format of the later tracks. Being the featured soloist, Bud has more time and room to work with and stretch out, and he certainly knew how to make the most of it. This trio is brilliant, to put it bluntly.

On a later disc like Time Waits, Bud is a little off. Not off-off, really, but more like... Ragged but Right. He could still do it, but you can tell he was having to work for it. Here though, on Amazing Powell Volume 1... it doesn't sound like he's working for anything. He just has it. All of it. It's just flowing out of him like sweat.

Bud was a brilliant musician and it's dripping out of him on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2004-08-31

I had heard Powell before on the Massey Hall concert and on the Mingus Antibes CD's. I was not impressed, so I bought this one just because it was on sale. I'm so glad I did. Bud Powell was one of those guys that had plenty of bad to average recording dates. But when he was at his best, he was untochable. Well, these sessions find him at his best and most historic. Every track is a highlihgt. His 1949 bop session is one of the best bop sessions I have heard, up there with the best of Bird, Dizzy and Monk.

Following the first brilliant flowerings of his talent from 1945-51, Bud Powell's recording sessions always hung in a delicate balance between his awe-inspiring creativity and his fragile psyche. This trio date from August 14, 1953--following a year-and-a-half stay in an institution--has always stood out as one of the best of his later recordings, an essential document of modern jazz piano. Accompanied by bassist George Duvivier and drummer Art Taylor, his working trio, Powell is in a comfortable setting and exceptional form, transforming a series of standards and bop tunes into profoundly personal creations alive with dynamic contrasts. Both "Autumn in New York" and "Sure Thing" assume classical dimensions in Powell's reworkings, from the fantasia that introduces the first to the quirky, near-baroque dimension that the latter assumes. "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" takes on somber depths, while "I Want to Be Happy" is pure, kinetic invention. The bop blues of "Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas" emphasizes the empathy and relaxed flow of the trio, while Powell's "Glass Enclosure"--inspired by the apartment where the pianist was held virtual prisoner by his manager--is a tense complex of shifting moods. The new Rudy Van Gelder edition adds immeasurably to the experience of this music. The remastering restores the expressive life of Powell's piano sound, and there are five previously unreleased tracks, a version of "I've Got You Under My Skin" and four unreleased alternate takes, each revealing another aspect of Powell's genius. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Testing the Boundaries of Jazz.......2007-04-18

Bud Powell was not one to shy away from testing the boundaries of jazz, and in some instances, disregarding them completely. Even Ornette Coleman's wildest creations still sound like jazz to me, while Powell's work takes occasional detours far and deep into uncharted waters. While I am inspired and occasionally awestruck by his unorthodox interpretations of Autumn in New York and Sure Thing, I find myself drawn to his more conventional renditions, like I Want to Be Happy and Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas. I recommend Amazing Vol. 1 over this for sheer listening pleasure, but Vol. 2 gave me an even deeper appreciation for deep talent of the truly amazing Bud Powell.

4 out of 5 stars Bud Powell in transition.......2002-07-20

With all due respect to critics like Stuart Broomer (who wrote the review for Amazon), this legendary Blue Note set is not "late" Powell (the use of the word assumes that his career ended around the time of this recording, which is false; Powell continued to pioneer his sound up until his death in 1965), nor are Powell's much-ballyhooed mental and health problems so important in evaluating this music. As Carl Smith wrote in his "Bouncing with Bud: All the recordings of Bud Powell", this is Powell "at a crossroads between the early and the late, with most of the strengths of both periods"---consciously transforming, experimenting and evolving. The quicksilver bop Bud Powell of the early Verve and Roost sessions is long gone. "Un Poco Loco" is an extremely advanced number that is modern by today's standards. "Glass Enclosure" is a near-classical composition. There is also a subtle and by-design paring-down/focus of style beginning here. You can hear how Bud begins to play fewer, and different (but still right)notes even in his most fleeting solos. I am less enamored of Powell's overly ornate and almost schmaltz treatment of "Autumn In New York" and "Over the Rainbow", regardless of the wonderful playing that can be compared to Art Tatum (this is a personal opinion). "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" is fine, but this brighter, more regular treatment is not as interesting as the version recorded by Prestige (Jazz at Massey Hall v2).

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe that this record was made 48 years ago.......2001-11-11

Near half a century has passed since Bud Powell,George Duvivier and Art Taylor recorded this outstanding session of pure bop, and it's incredible. The music is always as fresh, surprising, and as passionnate as if it had just been played. This music will never be old.The great Rudy Van Gelder remastered the tracks for this new edition, and for the first time, the tunes appear in the order of the recording session. There are a lot of alternate tracks and unissued tracks. And great tunes : beautiful standards like "autumn in New York","I've got you under my skin",Oscar Pettiford's blues "collard greens and blackeyed peas",Little Benny Harris' "Reets and I", and Bud's own compositions, including the famous "glass enclosure",and the beautiful "Audrey".As a child,Bud was fascinated by Bach's music, and this is obvious in his playing.Too bad he never had the opportunity of recording Bach's repertoire,Glenn Gould would have been frightened ! What is there more to say about this album ? That it's one of the most important in the history of jazz ? Yes,of course.Bud was at his best at that time, and mastered all kinds of playing : fast boppish tunes, and very slow tempos on ballads. This is a record you'll play again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful surprise!.......2007-01-28

We had never heard them before and only learned of them by doing a background search on someone of interest - which search turned up a review by them on the Bud & Travis website. We bought it on Amazon to learn more about our person of interest. What a strange turn of events - we absolutely love the album!

4 out of 5 stars Good selection, but lacking some hits.......2007-01-26

The Best of Bud & Travis gave me a chance to hear their renditions of certain songs, renditions I hadn't heard for years. I rejoiced particularly at Bonsoir Dame and Malagueña Salerosa. Wish it had also included I Talk to the Trees and Carmen Carmella.

I'm not familiar with most of the Latino numbers, but they were generally pleasing. To my non-Hispanic ears, there two Anglo guys sounded very authentic in their renditions. I liked the spontaneous improvisations in La Bamba: probably the most lively rendition I have heard of the original, non-Ritchie Valens version.

But as sometimes happens, hearing too many similar songs at one setting can get boring. For me, anyway, I can take only so much uninterrupted folk music at a time. Spread out, the numbers are more pleasing to the ear.

and including some wonderful Spanish songs . . . ! Inspiring and Joyful!

4 out of 5 stars These Guys are Close To The Best!.......2006-09-05

I bought this CD based on some of the other rave reviews. At first I kept comparing the singers to other superb groups like Ian and Sylvia, The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, The Weavers, and Peter Paul & Mary. But, finally during one listening session with this CD, I was able to forget about these other groups so as to be able to enjoy these guys on their own terms as musicians and singers. And, I had to admit, "yes, they are very good." Get this CD for great guitar playing and the beautiful voices. I enjoy listening to this CD and you will also! Email address is gourmet72141@yahoo.co

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2002-10-29

Absolutely superb! We finally have a cd of this terrific duo, masterful and powerful music. Some of their best cuts. The only downside [if there is one], is the absence of one of their very finest pieces: Raspberries, Strawberries.

Pray that their other albums will soon be out on cd!

5 out of 5 stars BEFORE BOSSA NOVA.......2006-10-06

BEFORE THERE WAS JOBIM, GILBERTO, OR GETZ, THERE WAS THIS MUSIC, WHICH WOULD LATER BE COINED BOSSA NOVA MUSIC. RECORDED IN 1953, THIS RECORDING WAS AT LEAST TEN YEARS AHEAD OF ITS' TIME. GREAT ALBUM, IF YOU LIKE THIS YOU HAVE TO GET VOLUME TWO AS WELL.

5 out of 5 stars Not only musicly great but also a historic recording.......2005-01-07

As the other reviewer says, this is an awesome recording. Whats worth noting also is that this is also probably the first bossa nova recording ever done (or at least a recording of brasilian songs that most closely match bossa nova and what it will be). These were recorded long before (7 years or so) Jobim and Joa gilberto recorded and 10 years before the great getz/gilberto recording wich started the bossa nova craze. Truly great for bossa nova or brazil music collectors.

5 out of 5 stars After 55 years I'm still dazzled by this album.......2000-09-27

My very first Bossa Nova album, I bought this while in high school on 10-inch LPs. Effervescent, light, joyous, romantic -- everything you dream Rio de Janeiro could be. It's more of a precursor to the Antonio Carlos Jobim Bossa Nova explosion a few years later. But Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida picked up on the potential for fusing jazz and the samba early on. I'm not a musician, but I know this album is pure genius. The soft sax and vibrant guitar will dazzle you. The interwoven rhythms of sax, guitar and drums go on and on. My favorite track is "Stairway to the Stars." Still gets me dreaming. They tried to follow up with a second album -- Braziliance II -- but it never achieved that spark of divine fire the first one did.

5 out of 5 stars Bud yes, but what a Sonny !!!.......2004-08-09

Bud played some of his best music here that's for sure and I say this thing too just to clarify that I agree with other reviewers who tribute the genius of Bud Powell on this particular recording. But the other guys' review lack words about Sonny who was the main actor of this music. Here he was in his tenor period so his playing is somewhat different from what we are used to hear from him. Personally I prefer his alto playing simply because with the alto Sonny was almost unreachable. With the alto he had an incredibly shining sound and he was able to blow chorus after chorus with tons of ideas. The tenor slowed him a little bit, he was forced to play differently, still in the bop idiom but with lesser "turns" and "curves" .. still he remained the boppest tenorman out there! In my opinion a lot better than a lot of celebated tenorman of the sixties .. Some, probably non-parker aficionados like him most with the tenor, I don't agree because I'm a parkerian, but Sonny Stitt remains Sonny Stitt even if you left him only his whistle .. It is true that what matters here are the first nine tracks and that the J.J.Johnson session are less important, altought still splendid recordings too. But the titans encounter between Stitt and Bud is something that every jazzcat should own in his collection! Just in case you forgot how bad those two were!!!

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Bud.......2004-04-19

It's really the Powell-Stitt tracks that matter, and they contain some of the most inventive and articulate piano playing in the entire history of jazz. On "All God's Children," Bud's choruses build on each other with dizzying creativity; the flow of ideas at such an astounding tempo is almost too much to grasp.

Bud's solo on "Strike Up the Band" begins as if he had already been playing silently for a chorus (of course, he'd been comping for Stitt to good effect!): you have to catch up with the ideas, and when you do, he doesn't disappoint; the musical narrative is both moving and surprising. Moreover, the way he backs Stitt, with highly syncopated chord punctuations, brings out the best in Sonny.

Often overlooked is the incredible subtlety in Bud's playing, in addition to the astonishing tempos, and this sets him apart from other jazz pianists. His incisive yet elegant touch is almost classical: he forces the listener to concentrate on how he shapes musical ideas and on the ways he manipulates notes with distinctive "trills" and arpeggios. I can never hear these tracks enough, and each time I listen I hear something new. This is pure Bud, pure genius, and Bud is boss!

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2002-12-07

What can anyone say? Powell's playing is PERFECT. Not only no bad notes whatsoever, but not even any remotely QUESTIONABLE notes. The rest of the gang are amazing, but Bud is PERFECT. I don't even listen to the non-Bud tracks.

I can't wait to get my live in NY 1944-49 CD.

5 out of 5 stars BUD POWELL!.......2002-01-05

Unquestionably tracks 1 to 9 contain the best uptempo modern jazz piano playing on record. The piano must have been still smoking after he finished this assault!

Great playing from Sonny Stitt, but even he's left looking a bit flat-footed by the dazzingly incisive work of Bud Powell. I first heard this when I was quite young and unfortunately everything else I've heard since then by him or by anyone else for that matter was bound to seem a little second-rate by comparison. It's amazing music!

5 out of 5 stars A gem.......2001-07-12

This essential-to-own recording captures every one of the players at the top of their form. Powell and Stitt at their very best, wonderfully complementing each other. Speed, articulation, creativity, soul, tight group, bebop at its very best. Don't even ask, just own it.

5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Masterpiece.......2006-04-16

Between 1958 and 1966, Bud & Travis-Bud Dashiell and Travis Edmonson to be exact-gathered up and perform their Folk magic. Exquisite harmonies and deft guitar picking abounded in their own songs as well as those they chose to cover, and became their Folk trademark.

Among those songs that they did not write, their love of all Latin American tunes was palpable and profound, and the source of what would be their last studio album: The Bud & Travis Latin Album.

What distinguishes these two artists, and this particular album, from many of their contemporaries in the early Sixties-a time when many singers were beginning to find market appeal for Latin music-is their faithful respect for the original songs.

If you, like me, grew up in Latin America in those days, you are sure to remember most if not all of these tunes. Many were even old songs by then and, mainly the music your parents or grandparents enjoy, yet they cast a spell on all of us who were younger and already crazy about The Beatles.

Another thing you may remember were records by Trini Lopez and Eddye Gorme with Los Panchos-and later Jose Feliciano and Herb Alpert-all people I learned to appreciate yet at times limiting Latin songs to manicured or watered down renditions of the classics, lacking on the vibrant soul that made them so popular in their countries of origin.

Most of these tunes-specially "La Bamba," "Guantanamera," "Malague?a Salerosa" and "Noche de Ronda"-as much as they are obvious choices represent an unique challenge. Being practically ingrained in the Latin American "collective unconscious," so to speak, they may doom those who may sing them casually or for the sake of a quick buck.

Well, The Bud & Travis Latin Album is a gorgeous example of pure beauty and deep respect. I'm feel very fortunate that the store where I purchased this gem was set up to preview CDs, otherwise I would have deprived myself and my friends from this forgotten masterpiece, prey to my own prejudices.

In addition to the renditions of those songs mentioned before, it is worth directing your attention to a few more jewels in this collection. "Abandonado," "Asi Canta Mi Patria," and "Caminante Del Mayab" are absolutely beautiful, and the rest of the songs that complete this set do not fall behind.

Do yourself a favor and buy this album immediately. You might learn, or at least it may remind you, that North American Folk already had an early eye on the rest of the world and was attending to a trove of great music, alongside the great work of Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger and before Joan Baez or Bob Dylan took Folk by a storm.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have (Especially for those who LOVE the guitar) !!!.......2005-08-16

What can I say folks...This is a true treasure from the past! One listen and you will be mesmerized at how a couple of guys can interpret classic Spanish songs, boleros with such perfection and ease. The catch is that neither one of these guys were ever born in Mexico or are from Spanish descent. Truly goes to show that music knows no color or boundaries...Bud Dashiell and Travis Edmonson came together in the mid to late 50's and continued with their success in the 60's producing rich pop-folk music but sometimes with a strong Latin influenced flair.Think Kingston Trio(minus the trio and more like a duo) with sometimes the subtlety of later groups like Peter, Paul and Mary and then influencing the Smothers Brothers and possibly Simon and Garfunkel. Now, cross this with the Spanish/Latin great muscial artists like Trio Los Panchos,Trio Calavera, a dash of Trini Lopez ! At times, their vocal harmonies compliment each other so well that you often forget it's just two guys singing and will think there are three (trio?).You will definitely feel and hear these guys singing from the gut, lungs, and heart---but most importantly, the soul or spirit! Their guitar playing skills are pure masterful artistry ! Sadly, MOST of their albums are completely out of print (as I have obtained rare vinyl pressings from the 50's and 60's at various used record stores). The Latin Album really put Bud & Travis on the map in the early 60's with this release !

What's intriguing about the original vinyl pressings is that you could buy the album in either the monaural (non-stereo) version or the stereophonic version. The stereophonic version, as with most early stereo pressings, tended to exaggerate the soundfield/soundstage. Often resulted in an "unnatural" playback experience(the singer on the left speaker and the entire band or other artists on the right speaker). The mono version had more bass, clarity and less tape source noise and vinyl record surface noise. The limited cd pressing (currently available as of this writing),while it sounds clear and void of all the record pops and ticks, reveals some annoying tape hiss (don't know if it's in the remastering process or an anomaly of the digital medium). I can tell you that the vinyl monaural pressing sounds awesome and clear out of the 3 pressings !
