Simply breathtaking!.......2007-06-29
This is an awsome CD. Look out for the first 4 tracks and 'Baby come to me' and 'It takes a stronger man'. 'The weakness in me' was originally done by Joan Armatrading and it has always been a masterpiece. I never thought anyone could ever do it any justice until now. 'Baby come to me' was also done by Regina Belle and also by Patti Austin. Keisha White added a nice flavour to it really sounds great. This is definitely a must have CD in your collection. Your decision is now "Out of my hands"
This Wonderful Album Should Be IN YOUR HANDS!.......2006-09-09
Keisha White is the real deal Holyfield. Representing North London, the young soul siren embodies that 'it' factor that every artist wishes they possessed. She's got the chops, she's got the looks, and she's got the versatility. But being a world away will limit her exposure to the listening audience in the United States. Nevertheless, Keisha White has the sophistication for the older crowd along with the power ballads that the 'American Idol' audience seems to enjoy hearing week in and week out on the show. And her debut album Out of My Hands is certainly one of those albums that the critics will love and embrace after one listen.
"The Weakness In Me" is a superb illustration of the vocal gift that Keisha personifies in every note she exclaims in her songs (see link to the video below). Other compelling melodies include "I Choose Life" and "It Takes A Stronger Man." But Keisha White also explores the delicate and smooth side of R&B with songs like "One Step At A Time," "Love Is The Deepest Hurt," and "Why." She even does a few mid-tempo tracks like the funky "Brother," the title track "Out Of My Hands," the unrelenting "What's On Your Mind" and the cover of the Patti Austin/James Ingram classic "Baby Come To Me." Even the upbeat riff of "Complicated Emotions" doesn't sound out of place despite it being the only cut on the album that comes close to a dance track.
A lot of people will try to draw comparisons to people like Toni Braxton, Joss Stone, or Heather Headley. But Keisha White is truly a starlet in her own right. Her gracefulness alone sets her far apart from the pack. And even though Out of My Hands is an import disc, the few extra bucks to get your hands on it will be worth every penny once you play it for the first time in your stereo.

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.
Customer Reviews:
Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20
Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.
Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

Customer Reviews:
Get Jennifer Rush's masterpiece into your hands!.......2003-11-06
Upon this discovering Out Of My Hands, my first thought was, "Whoa, another Jennifer Rush CD I missed." The second thought was, "Hey! She covers songs by Queen and The Moody Blues. Now that I gotta hear!" If she was brimming with passion on her 1988 Passion album, she's got even more here, as "Tears In The Rain" is a return to the bombastic power ballads, crashing piano, organs and power vocals that made me shudder in awe upon hearing her sing. And no wonder, this song was written by Desmond Child and my favourite, Diane Warren. Apart from the inability to distinguish tears during a rainy day, it also helps to hide one's pain. "So as we're sayin' goodbye/guess I'll be cryin' in vain/cause you can't see tears in the rain."
Diane Warren and Jon Secada are two of three co-writers of the title track, which is punchy upbeat disco produced by some old hands, Ric Wake and arranged by him and yes, Rich Tancredi. This wouldn't be out of place now, given that recent Cher and Celine Dion songs have become commonplace oontsa-oontsa music, but it's pretty bouncy stuff for back then.
Another Child and Warren song, with another co-writer, Michael Bolton, and one can't lose with that combination even she was drinking Liquid Plumber. No, she doesn't on "In The Arms Of Love", where she promises to be the light in the dark, a shield from the storm, shelter from the rain, and to lift one above the madness and pain. Hearing these lines connected with me: "All your life no one's ever shown you/what it's really like to have someone hold you."
Jennifer Rush co-wrote "Fortress", which features a uptempo drum machine, airy synths, and a gospelish chorus. She uses metaphors and similes here, such as "I'll be a river and flow into you" or "I'll always receive you in this harbor you've found", which borders on trite. After hearing "When you wake up in the morning/and I'm smiling at you/Do you get the kind of feeling/like wild horses running through", I thought, "if it was Jennifer, heck yeah!"
In "Shocked", another upbeat Tancredi production, she uses more similes on describing love: "a crutch for the easily moved", "a record that's stuck in the same groove", "a painting that hangs on a museum rule", yet despite the clichés, she feels the shock of her senses reeling at the sight of a certain man.
Now that I think of it, I wonder if Sarah Brightman was inspired to cover Queen's "Who Wants To Live Forever" after hearing Jennifer Rush and Brian May sing and produce this, as it's backed by an orchestra and features May's guitar. As for which version is better, it's a dead heat. The acid test is the way one sings "Touch my tears with your lips/touch my world with your fingertips." One of the best songs in a crown of gems, helped in its power bombast with the orchestra and her voice.
If the 80's style piano keyboards on the up-tempo ballad "Untouchable" are familiar, it's because they were done by Robbie Buchanan, who's worked with Laura Branigan and Glenn Frey, as well as countless others.
"Only Heaven Knows" sports operatic backing vocals that wouldn't be out of place on a Jim Steinman production. The keyboards and guitars of the song are by Peter Zizzo, who works with Ric Wake in production. "Crazy `Bout You": another slice of dance-techno. "Cry, Baby..." is a heartbreaker featuring a wailing guitar.
Jennifer Rush is one of the few artists whose operatic voice is appropriate for "Nights In White Satin." The same orchestra used in the Queen song and though the backing vocals don't have that ethereal angelic sound of Justin Hayward and company. The Spanish-like guitar and flutes add a nice touch per the original.
A return to the kind of music that was abandoned in Wings Of Desire. Desire this instead and get Out Of My Hands into your hands, and her voice will get into your heart. Not a filler track in sight, so, it's official-Jennifer Rush's best album yet.
This CD rocks-one of Jennifer Rush's best.......2003-11-05
This CD is one of the best CD's you will ever hear. From
the moment you hear the first song "Tears in the Rain"
you will be hooked. "Out of My Hands" is a great dance song
and was written by Jon Secada. The next song "In the Arms of
Love" was written by Michael Bolton and the range of her voice
is awesome. You just can't describe the range of her voice she
is totally unique. The song "Fortress" is just to awesome to
describe. If you want to get into a new artist you will be glad
you discovered Jennifer Rush
The "Voice".......2001-10-03
I haven't recently discovered Jennifer Rush. I recently purchased a copy of "Out of my hands" on ebay. It is incredible. Her voice is the most incredible instrument in pop music. I have not found one bad track on this collection. Jennifers version of Queens "Who wants to live forever" with special guest Brian May is to say the least Haunting. This album show cases Jennifer as a premiere talent in the music buisness today. She continues to create some of the greatest work I have ever heard. I look forward to collecting the rest of her work. This is a must for anyone who appreciates female vocalists with range, and emotion.
One of the Best.......2000-04-04
This is one of the best bunch of songs I have heard. The words and the voice to sing them.Buy it you won`t be dissapointed. there are no duds on this CD

Impeccably Performed, Stunning Sound.......1998-11-20
The beautifully captured reverberant sound of the acoustic space is matched by gorgeous choral balance, precise diction, and definitive interpretation. In spite of the contemporary style of the compositions - Rorem doesn't shy away from crunchy dissonances - this is a very enjoyable collection of Choral music with many beautfiul moments.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite Christmas albums ever!.......2007-01-11
I bought this album because one of my favorite soprani, Janice Chandler-Eteme is featured. I was not disappointed in the quality and I was thrilled to have a good recording of so many of Bach's Christmas-related chorales. I actually listen to this one year-round because much of it is not strictly Christmas music.

This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.
ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23
This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Hail and Farewell to an original.......2007-03-15
This is likely to be his last album. (His website, however, indicates a forthcoming record of gospel music to be released later this year). Mark Spoelstra died Feb. 25, 2007 at the age of 66. As it was, he had put the music business behind him in the early 70s to raise a family and lead an ordinary life. "Out Of My Hands" is a return to recording after twenty-plus years and it's a good record to be remembered by. Many of the songs are favorites that he has worked on over time. The album is a mix of songs and intrumentals. His singing and guitar work are strong; the recording is intimate without a touch of reverb. The liner notes contain many of Spoelstra's own comments about his music. The cover art is a watercolor by the folk singer/artist Eric von Schmidt (who died, coincidentally, just three weeks before Spoelstra). Overall, this is one fine record to listen to and remember and celebrate a folk music orginal.
Amazing.......2007-02-25
Wow. We just bought this CD, and I'm totally in love with it.
I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mark - he is my husband's uncle.
Chip has some great memories of listening to his uncle play the guitar and sing.
I highly recommend this CD and any other of Mark's. He is a rare and gifted musician and songwriter.
Question.......2003-06-09
I haven't heard this album. I remember mark singing "He was a friend of mine" in the mid 60's. Is it available on cd or anywhere?
What a pleasant suprise!.......2002-07-29
I've often checked the web for any info on "What ever happened to Mark Spoelstra.." and now I know. He's back! Really an enjoyable album -he can still play that 12-string and the 6-string too. His blues sound so right - how come they call it the blues when it makes you smile so? I first heard his music when we were in alternative service orientation in 1963 and its just as good today. I would would enjoy him recording "Just a closer walk with thee" which he played back then but worried that it might be too bluesy for the church he was going to be performing in! Hope this isn't the last album - and I hope it gets noticed! It deserves it!
The Return of a Legend.......2002-03-04
I've been a fan of Mark Spoelstra's music since the mid-sixties and have acquired everything he has done. I can recommend " Out of my Hands" to anybody whose is into acoustic/blues/american folk. Mark has always been his own man, never mimicking black blues artists unlike many of his comtemporaries from the 60s. He always brings that elusive " something" to his recordings, that quality that make his records " special". Buy this record and obtain a piece of a true American original.
