Traditional Irish musicians commonly are fond of medleys of jigs and reels, but few have been so relentless in combining compatible melodies and rhythms as County Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill. The centerpiece of this album, recorded at Seattle's Tractor Tavern, is a 27-minute semi-improvised suite incorporating fragments of 11 distinct tunes. American folk music fans with attention spans more attuned to Woody Guthrie than Philip Glass might prefer the more concise five-minute pairing of "Carraroe" and "Out on the Ocean," or the jazzy six-minute coupling of "Dowd's No. 9" and "Come West Along the Road." As the old advertising jingle goes, "It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long." --Rick Mitchell

Blown away.......2007-06-18
This album is so incredible. Buy a copy for yourself and as many more as you can afford and give them out as gifts for any occassion.
Amazing, wonderful, powerful..........2007-06-14
This is just a superb, understated effort. I had first heard "Gravity" listening to a Christian radio station over the Internet and was immediately drawn to his style and lyrics.
Here's a guy who is soft-spoken and humble before God, and truly grateful for his salvation, given his background, which you can learn about on the CD and online. His thirst and hunger for the Lord--a true, unaffected faith--comes through in every song. If his voice doesn't drive right through you--it certainly does for me--the music and lyrics will.
I am more fond of unadulterated acoustic music rather than polished studio mixes. This CD has it. Make no mistake though--the sound and music quality is excellent with two voices (Shawn and a female vocalist) and a cellist who adds just the right touching quality to the music.
It may sound strange but when I started listening to this CD it really starting deeply ministering to me. As a man I almost hate to admit it, but I had a hard time not crying on a lot of these songs. I started seeing how deeply and passionately someone not just wants but deep in our souls needs to know and love their Creator--it's simple and basic and fundamental to a Christian's walk, but we often miss it in the hum and buzz of our daily lives.
That said--all in all this is an excellent, warm, and beautiful effort from a superb musician I think we'll be hearing a lot from in the coming years.
Inspiring and Entertaining.......2007-05-28
Live In Seattle is an energetic and enjoyable live album by Shawn McDonald. It is my first Shawn McDonald CD and I am not disappointed. His sound is very good and his lyrics are superb. He does a great job of sharing the message of Jesus in song.
The lyrics talk about needing God, surrendering to God, and praise. He is not afraid to mention the name of Jesus. His songs are both meaningful and catchy. I particularly like 'Gravity'. He also does a remake of Judy Garland's 'Over The Rainbow'.
Shawn is an up and coming artist who will both inspire and entertain. I recommend it.
Too much live music.......2007-05-17
Based on the sample music from Amazon of this CD, one would think it is recorded in a studio. But it's a live performance and I didn't know this. I would have bought his other CD had I known this.

It doesn't get any better than this.......2004-02-26
I own (and love) Hayes' two previous CDs, so I was rather ambivalent about purchasing this one, given that too many "live" albums are just a rehash of previously recorded material punctuated with applause. Fortunately, I sent for the CD anyway, and it's a revelation. Irish music arose in an environment that fostered an intimate connection between performer and listener; while tradition was respected, spontaniety and the imprint of the musician's personality were equally valued. Working within traditional Co. Clare fiddling style, Hayes teases out the nuances of each tune, from thoughtful to lighthearted to downright raucous; Cahill is a perfect ally, providing both support and (at times) contrast in his solo passages. What I find remarkable about the 27-minute set is that it doesn't SEEM that long: it's a drama in a dozen acts, and although the emotions cover a wide range, the tension never flags. (Contrary to my expectations, most of the CD is new material; I recognized only a few tunes from Hayes' earlier recordings.) The performances are so polished that I was surprised at times to hear applause; in general, the audience was so in tune with the performers that they didn't whoop and holler at inappropriate moments. This is Irish fiddling at its finest, and the recording is generally very well done. (My one complaint: whatever possessed them to fade out at the end of the last track? It destroys the concert "feel" and doesn't do justice to the tune.)
Moving playing of the highest order........2002-06-22
It takes quite a CD to get me to go to the effort of writing a review. However, having noticed that most of the well-deserved positive reviews received by this excellent CD come from fans of Hayes and Cahill, I decided to provide an outsider opinion. I am primarily a classical musician (a pianist) and I certainly wouldn't consider myself expert in Celtic fiddling. In fact, I'm not sure quite why I bought this CD in the first place. Sure am glad I did. This is music making at the very highest level. The 27+ minute medley of 11 tunes should be required listening for anyone who has ever tried to play, for example, a Bach Partita. This is truly playing which moves the listener, both physically and emotionally. Very highly recommended!
Bravo!.......2001-11-28
This CD is, by far, my favorite and I own tons of Celtic music CD's. I've seen Hayes and Cahill many times in person, and this CD captures the thrill and excitement of a live performance. I've been a friend and fan of Dennis Cahill from his days at Shannon's Landing Pub and other Chicago area venues. When Martin Hayes joined him as Midnight Court, I knew there was something special going on, even if they didn't realize it right away. Don't pass up an opportunity to see them in person, but buy the CD - you won't regret it.
At the Tractor Tavern.......2000-04-20
I just happened to be in Seattle the night of the release party, and I elbowed my way into the Tractor Tavern to hear Martin Hayes, one of my favorite performers. I wasn't diappointed with the concert, and I certainly am delighted with the album. Hayes and Cahill are a legendary duo: their performance is a wonderful blend of creativity and musicianship, and both musicians perform equally for the good of the music, not solely to highlight themselves or each other. And while there is much music to be enjoyed, there is much to be learned from this album too: if you are a musician, you will appreciate the flawless technique and inclusion of tradition and non-traditional elements in chording and ornamentation. It was a great personal joy to be at the Tractor Tavern for the release party, and an even greater joy to relive that night every time I play this album.
One Of The Best Live Albums Ever.......2000-02-09
Perhaps I am bias since I was at this concert at Seattle's Tractor Tavern but I must say that this CD aptly captures the magic that was in the room that night. In fact, this recording captures the passion & energy of their live performances better than any of Haye's excellent studio albums. Check out the hair-raising nearly-30 minute suite. Elements of jazz & classical music can be detected in the complex, undefinable interpretations of traditional Irish music. Any music lover should give this a chance. Simply breathtaking!

Burnin' in Ballard.......2007-03-12
Geoffrey Keezer's trio (with Mike Pope and Terreon Gully) are joined here by Joe Locke on vibes for an intense live performance at the Ballard Jazz Festival in Seattle.
Ballard, a Seattle neighborhood that formerly boasted two regular jazz venues but now has none, is a traditionally Scandinavian enclave. That part of the world has always supported this music, so the venue is still appropriate. What transpires here is great individual playing and tight group interaction. Keezer has been one of the best young keyboardists for several years, and is heard here on electric instuments as well as his more familiar acoustic one. Mike Pope is solid and collabarative as always, and Terreon Gully is among the most interesting and innovative of what is an outanding cadre of younger jazz drummers.
Joe Locke shows why the vibraphone remains one of the most enjoyable instruments to hear in this setting. The instrument doesn't have many exponents, but along with the estimable Bobby Hutcherson and younger players like Steve Nelson and Stephon Harris, Joe Locke keeps the vibes available as a solo voice.
With the exception of James Taylor's "Native Son", all the compositions are either Keezer's or Locke's. The performance is well-paced, each composition played long enough to give the two composers plenty of time to explore, and the live recording by Reed Ruddy is excellent. If you're partial to jazz recorded live, as many of us are, this is an excellent performance by a small band generating big energy. Highly recommended.
"Live in Seattle" - what the reviewers say..........2006-11-05
Jason West (All About Jazz):
"As can be the case on special occasions, this live recording is ripe with sonic excitement, spontaneity, and the ubiquitous impression that something extraordinary is happening right before one's ears.
That undoubtedly was the feeling of those who filled the Mars Hill Church on November 19, 2005 for the third annual Ballard Jazz Festival's headline concert. The wow factor, in full force at the start of the show, had morphed into an I-can't-friggin-believe-what-I'm hearing phenomenon by the end of the night, as a normally subdued Seattle jazz audience found itself hooting and hollering as if the Seahawks had won the Superbowl.
Six tracks of original compositions (plus James Taylor's "Native Son") are captured here--three by Locke and three by Keezer--creating an enjoyable yet intricate challenge to listeners who attempt to name the composer of each tune without peeking at the credits--so similar are the musical visions, so subtle the thematic differences that separate Locke's and Keezer's writing for this group. [..]"
* * * * * * * * * *
Harvey Siders (JazzTimes):
"[..] Co-leaders vibist Locke and pianist Keezer are so close in their musical philosophy that when one itches, the other scratches. They comp respectfully behind each other, not that either leaves many gaps. And each knows how to heighten the energy of the other. Regarding group excitement, the quartet is propelled by a kinetic rhythm section: bassist Mike Pope and drummer Terreon Gully. [..]"
* * * * * * * * * *
Dr. Michael Matheny (RadioIO Jazz):
"Setting the pulse and vibrations is drummer Terreon Gully with Mike Pope locking firmly on to the foundation with both electric and acoustic bass. Just these two players are fun to follow through each track. But it is Geoffery Keezer who is (simply mad!) on piano and Locke himself that fill every space of the sound spectrum left in the mix. The music is intelligently horizontal and vertical. Once you think you are in the groove and the standard has been set, you are taken to a higher level as you follow the agile dialogue between Keezer and Locke. The results are magical."

Frightening.......2006-08-14
I honestly don't know how many stars to give this recording. At one point it sounds like Trane is literally trying to blow his tenor apart and things get so intense that he begins... growling! Frankly, this performance scares me. I like OM which was recorded during the same week at a studio in Seattle - it takes repeated listens to finally discover its beauty but this, this recording scares me. The guy sounds as though he pushed the boundaries too far and end up possessed by something.
I can't give it less than 5 start because it is Trane and it's my own problem if I can't get on board with what he's doing here. I no longer own this recording and cannot listen to it. You've been warned.
One of his free jazz albums that grew on me........2005-11-19
When I first heard this album I thought it was a waste of money. I tried to listen to it a lot more times but I didn't like it. Finally I just listened to it and liked it. The only song I didn't like was cosmos that is too wild for me to listen to. This album was recorded during Coltrane's stay in the west coast where he recorded Kulu Se Mama. This was also the first live album with the Coltrane-Sanders saxophone duo. This was also the first live album where coltrane started exploring with bigger groups and doubling up on basses and drums. I still say don't buy this album yet if you don't a good ear for music because you will think it's bad when it's not at all.
Body and Soul/Out of This World.......2005-09-19
The two standards on this set have Coltrane playing that is simply shocking and shockingly beautiful. Outstanding Garrison and Jones.
Wha'?.......2005-08-10
My God. I liked the Olatunji concert, but there are limits to even my liberal definition of "music". Cosmos is a nonsensical catfight. Afro-Blue begins nicely with a 4/4 version of the theme, but where does Trane go after the first fifty seconds? Pharoah Sanders takes over in a truly crude and pretentious display of quacks and farting noises.
I havent listened to Evolution, but I understand it is even harder on the ears than Cosmos.
The only thing I liked on this album was Body and Soul, in a wild version that would have given Coleman Hawkins peptic ulcers. I must admit I also liked Out of this World. Three stars out of five.
Finally....I get it........2005-04-23
I've been a fan of Coltrane for a while now, slowly building up my library, I was warned of the wild later period so I began with his early stuff and continued in that way. I remember the first time I listened to A Love Supreme, I was speechless, it blew my mind! Then I listened to Live at Birdland, when Coltrane came in for his solo in Afro Blue I thought my heart was gonna stop! AHH. So once I listened to the Quartet albums for the thousandth time, I decided it was time to go forward. For some reason I picked Live in Seattle for my step into Coltrane's later formed world, I think it was because I loved Birdland so much I jumped at another Live album. When I first listened, I couldnt get through Cosmos, Though I liked Out of this World and some parts of others songs. So having trouble with the album I didnt listen to it for a while. Though I didnt go out and buy more albums right away, I started reading and knowing as much about Coltrane as I could. Being a musician, hes always been one of my musical idols, but then he became an idol on its own, I truely admired him for all he was worth, there is no like him! I started listened to Sun Ship and I dug it so I decided to try out Live in Seattle once again, and when Cosmos began, I felt like I was falling into a trance. I closed my eyes and my body swayed back and forth, I felt the music deeply in my heart and soul, when I got to Body and Soul I had tears in my eyes. I LOVE JOHN COLTRANE!

Buy another copy of "Live 1981-86".......2005-01-31
JJ's best band was the N&D1 band, and his live album 1981-86 proves it. This album brings us a good version of "Is she really going", but the rest is nothing but a pale shaddow of the original from the 80's. I like JJ music enough to be hoenst and tell, that his N&D2 is not comparable to the original, and so that live album, that was made by N&D2 band. Dissapointment would describe very well my feelings.
Previously available only through Joe's website..........2004-12-04
This is a live CD that was previously available only through Joe's website. It's a seven piece band with two percussionists and two strings (violin & cello) so there is a heavy emphasis on those instruments and less of the rockin' Joe Jackson you might expect. The songs have been rearranged to fit the sound of these instruments as well. It's not a greatest hits but it does have a few along with a nice selection of album cuts. Of the 14 tracks my personal favorites are "Another World" (with some great bass playing by the immortal Graham Maby), "Is She Really Going Out With Him", "Real Men" and a decent version of "Slow Song" but the best of all is his very nice update of "Hometown" from the Big World album. Overall a pretty good album but it's strictly for hardcore Jackson fans.
Not his best outing, but OK for the Joe Jackson completist.......2004-04-23
Anybody who saw Joe Jackson live on his 25th Anniversary/Volume 4 tour realizes how vital and significant his live performances are. This album, previously available on his web site, is merely OK. It is a marginal recording, and the music lacks the incredible punch and power of the original Joe Jackson Band (which he toured with last year). Since there are better live JJ recordings out there, give this one a pass and buy a genuinely GREAT CD: JJ Live 1980/86. Now THAT is a live album!
An Excellent Live CD from his website.......2004-02-03
As Vanarndt from allentown, nj states, this is the commercial in-store release of a terrific document that has been previously available through his website. If you have it already, do not be mislead into thinking this is new. However, Jackson is preparing other live and studio releases for this year to celebrate his 25 years being ignored by the pop mind-set. Pity, because he is far more compelling and convincing a writer than Elvis Costello, a 100% more genuine and a thousand times less full of himself than the Liverpudlian windbag.
There is an autheticity to Joe that is far removed from the smug calculated preciousness of MacManus. Joe never lost his punk vitriol, no matter how skilfully he embraced it in music. And he never had the delusional self absorption to dismiss and deride Ray Charles's contributions.
There is always an edge to Jackson, even in in the sentimental "Home Town", which strikes a resonating chord with anyone who sees something essentially lost in their place of remembered beauty. This set sparkles all the way through, and though taken from different concerts in different cities, it is a seamless and intimate presentation of some of his most terrific songs. There is everything to like about this set, so, if you hadn't picked it up before, do yourself a favour and do so now.
Great CD, but NOT a 25th Anniversary Live CD!.......2004-01-31
First off, this is a great CD, and if you don't have it...it's worth getting. What's irritating is that it's being sold as a "25th Anniversary Live" CD which would imply a live CD recorded during the tour last Fall. It's not. It's a repackage of the same CD Joe made available through his website a few years ago. Same CD, different label and new cover art.

"Fun, Fluffy, Filling, and proFound" wrapped up in one........2004-02-23
The album is immediately enjoyable and accessible, yet deeply textured. You come for the melodies, yet you stay for the lyrical depth, complexity, and layered delivery.
I've had this album for a number of years, (after seeing them by chance at a music festival), and still get great enjoyment from listening to it.
"Welcome to the New World" is my favorite cut. A song unequalled in it's ability to paint a broken marriage and midlife crisis and ensuing opportunity with nothing more than a series of sub-phrases consisting of adjective/noun pairings and the title line.
Vocals are fantastic, great blending, flowing gracefully back and forth as a single voice or a perfect harmonization at will. No small feat when you realize how many syllables Andrew can cram into a measure.
Andrew's lyrics are second to none. I don't say that lightly. In fact, I think they are genius in their mock simplicity. Other great lyricists actually need to make sure that we understand how deep they are and how selective they've been. Andrew's lyrics aren't trying to impress anyone, He's not afraid to go from cutesy to ironic to triple entendre to a multi-layered analogy in a single stanza. His song subjects also run the gamut. You wouldn't find many folks putting out a child like song"Little Skipper" (yes, as in Barbie doll Skipper) on the same album with a forlorn song like "Comfort Me". Yet both are treated with the same lyrical care. There is no lyrical equal to Andrew (across all his albums). This is mainly because no-one else even attempts his lyrical style. Free-flowing and as fast as they come, (think Fed-ex commercial, or post-commercial legal disclaimers), yet they can hold up under a microscope of repeated listening. This is what makes the album have such a long shelf life. They can be taken as carefree, but weren't created that way. Depth is optional for the listener. `Doug Engaged' is a great example.
The rhythms, especially on the guitar are superb. Truly unique. Can't explain, just listen.
The only criticism I have of the album is it's mixing, especially on the initial track. The vocals which should be frontstage, especially on this cut, are too distant, and the acoustical accompaniment takes the focus.
I would recommend this to folks who like David Wilcox, Christine Lavin, or the old Bare Naked Ladies. I would compare it to Gordon (by BNL). Fanciful, not taking itself too seriously, but underneath the surface, the simplicity is a veneer for a much more skilled songwriting.
I sense a valid tinge of frustration from the group that they have not become more popular. Indeed, it's a shame, they're too deep for bubble gum music, and not taken seriously enough by the elite as worthy of being truly artistic. They're too fun for folk music, and not hip enough for pop rock. But for those who don't feel a need to justify themselves to the music critics, and want something that is textured enough to provide years of enjoyable listening across a range of subject, this is truly unique and great album.

An event worth capturing..........2001-11-08
The protest of the WTO was a ray of light for some of us who thought that America would never get off the couch, turn off the TV, and do something. That day, it was proven that different types of people can come together and do something about what's going on. This album helps to capture the spirit of that protest, an unauthorized, post-curfew concert that almost didn't happen. The album includes spoken word from Jello Biafra, with musical accompaniment from the band, only one member of which was Krist Novoselic, ex-Nirvana member. Also worth mentioning was a new version of "Let's Lynch the Landlord". This album is well worth it, I assure you. I myself own the vinyl, I suggest you buy the same. (...)
the ultimate protest album..in grunge town.u.s.a!.......2001-09-10
a bold statement the meeting of the minds for this one.you got jello.chris.and kim.what else could you want more and from who i dont think of anyone else.so anyways just a great protest album of speaking out against the world trade organization.i wish more bands would team up against the establishment more often .but most bands are centered on self interest.this to me is what punk music is all about speaking out and to be heard with great dialoge from jello biafra inbetween songs and just great jamms from 2 of the most important musicians in the 90s kim thayil(sound garden) and chris noveselic (i like the fact jello could not remember the name of his band)it is a great buy .it kind of gives me a little more respect for the overused term punk rock and kind of rejustifies the word.high lights are doing the dks lets lynch the landlord and doa'sfull metal jackoff.so forget all those tibetin freedom band wagen rallys and think of home with this one..........helping to keep home strong and not leting big brother have to much of a hold........every little step counts......

Absolutely Gorgeous.......2006-07-29
This album has to be one of the most spectacular examples of musicianship I can think of. I fell in love with this recording when a friend showed it to me. The phrasing is remarkably tender and elegant. Bill Frisell and Dale Bruning just play the right thing all the time. If any of you have a list of "must haves" for your music libraries, please include this album.

Product Description
The name itself gives the first hint: not the American String Orchestra, or the American String Ensemble, but the American String PROJECT. Think "project" in its one of its prime connotations-- a plan in development, communal in nature, defining and refining its goals as its members engage and you get a sense of the fluidity and camaraderie that are the hallmarks of this group. The American String Project is an annual phenomenon where diverse performers and modes and visions mingle to create something that did not exist before: Fifteen string players from around the world gather in Seattle to perform works from the chamber music repertoire that have been arranged specifically for the group. The intimacy of the chamber music articulation, with its interplay of tone and color, is enriched and deepened, taking on the tonalities of a string symphony but always with the proportion and exchange that characterizes the great chamber works. Two further differences are salient: First, the Project draws from the world s premier string players: soloists, concertmasters, chamber music artists, teachers. Moreover, this ensemble performs without a conductor. The group is anchored by its artistic directors, Barry Lieberman and Maria Larionoff, but its modus operandi is collaborative. Each work on a season s program is assigned a "leader," who together with all the musicians determines how best to shape and present the performance. From work to work, the players positions rotate, to egalitarian effect: at times even a musician who sits exclusively in the concertmaster s chair in her or his regular job may occupy in the last chair in the second violins. The result of these differences, as audiences and critics over the past five seasons have discovered to their joy, is music making of thrilling vitality and communication-- performance not as reproduction but as translation. From the introspection of Mozart to the energy of Beethoven and the poignancy of Mendelssohn; from the pas
