Album Description
2007 four CD box set that includes all of the British Folk legends' surviving BBC radio recordings, which were taped between 1967 and 1974. It was thought, until recently, that very few of these recordings from this time remained in the BBC's archive, but a few years ago a box was discovered on a shelf at the BBC. It is a marvelous addition to the Fairport collection and is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the formation of the band The Fairports, the single best British Folk-Rock band of the late '60s, did more than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the Folk-Rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions of traditional British Folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group were also talented songwriters as well as interpreters. They were comfortable with conventional harmony-based Folk-Rock as well as tunes that drew upon more explicitly traditional sources and they boasted some of the best singers and instrumentalists of the day. 69 tracks. Universal. 2007

Fairport at the Beeb.......2007-07-30
For the many Fairport Convention die-hard fans out there like me, this 4 CD set is a treasure trove of gems recorded for BBC programs between 1968 and 1974. It covers a variety of the different lineups, but most importantly includes plenty of contributions by the immortal Sandy Denny, Ian Matthews and Richard Thompson. Judy Dyble is also there. It should be noted that the material released on the Heyday album is duplicated here.
If you don't have any Fairport music this is probably not the place to start, but if you are a seasoned campaigner then this could well be for you
It's all here.......2007-05-08
Finally. After years of speculation Island finally amassed all of the surviving Fairport Convention BBC sessions in the handsome 4cd box set. This is basically an expanded version of the "Heyday" CD from years ago which was expanded from the original "Heyday" on Joe Boyd's Hannibal records. That entire expanded "Heyday" is here and a lot more. There is even a disc of off air recordings with Judy Dyble in vocal chair from 1967 and recordings from the "Liege and Leaf " post Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson period also. Also included is a history of the group and the sessions. I have to admit it is on the pricey side but to get the clearances and the amount of research and assistance from fans it's expected but worth it and it makes a nice gift to.
Radio Fairport.......2007-04-25
In 1987 the Original "Heyday" was Released on Joe Boyd's Hannibal Records. Culled from BBC Radio Sessions from 1968-69, this was the Sandy Denny/Ian Matthews Version of Fairport Convention when they were known as "England's Jefferson Airplane". That Title was not a Put-Down against Fairport or The Airplane but a way to Explain this Presentation of American Music by these Fantastic English Musicians. The Songs on "Heyday" were not Featured on their early Records but the were staples of the Concerts of 1967-69. Showing another side of this Band "Heyday" featured such writers as Bob Dylan, Eric Anderson, Joni Mitchell, Richard Farina and Leonard Cohan that the British Folks ( With the exception of Dylan ) hadn't heard on their Shores Before.
In 2002 "Heyday" was Re-released and expanded to 20 tracks and Remastered to include some "Liege and Lief" material. Bootlegs were released (all two of them) of even more BBC recordings that featured Tunes from 1970-1974. It was reported that more BBC shows were out there... but, it still a shock to see a Four CD Box set available in 2007 with all this Music (69 TRACKS)!!!
Firstly all of the Expanded "Heyday" is included here, but there is so much more: a December 67 Session with Judy Dyble, the "Full House" band Live featuring the Fire of Thompson & Swarb, through to the 73-74 Sessions of the "NIne" and "Rising" Lineups. There are a lot's of Rare tracks: "Marcie", "Night in the City", "You're Gonna Need My Help", "Violets of Dawn". "The Lady is a Tramp" & "Light My Fire" that were Highlights of the Bootleg Releases.
The Sound Quality gets Rough in spots, but it still holds up because of the Wealth of Great Music presented here. This is not the Place to start if you are new to the Music of Fairport Convention, But for me I do feel Lucky to own this Amazing Little BBC boxset of Fab, Fairport Live Music...FOUR STARS~!!!
Very Convenient Set If Not Absolutely Essential.......2007-04-24
This is a very convenient set. 4 CD's which have all the group BBC Sessions in one place. If there's a problem, it's that there isn't that much that's new for veteran fans. And of course Sandy Denny isn't on several tracks, which may discourage some. The '02 official release of 'Extended Heyday' filled many of the 'Sandy' needs for BBC Fairport stuff. Still though, the inclusion of a few new ones like the fine arrangement of Joni Mitchell's "Marcie," or oddity like Richard Thompson's fun lead on (of all things!) "The Lady is a Tramp," or the many early ones one Disc 4 are nice to see. The sound IS excellent, and notes are interesting in talking about how the recordings were made: great stuff despite (or perhaps even because of) little rehearsal time and cramped quarters. Very good IMO, if perhaps not totally essential, especially if you have all their '68-'75 material and some of the fairly available boots.

Nearly the best live Fairport disc ever.......2007-05-06
The best, in terms of musical diversity and live atmosphere, is of course "AT2/The Boot" - but you'll have a tough time finding a copy of that!
This is certainly the most historically valuable of all the live Fairport discs - given that so far all the Sandy-era shows in circulation have been unsatisfying documents from her declining years. The Full House lineup is increasingly almost as revered as the 1968-9 edition, both for their compositions and arrangements (for which see that particular album) and their live performances (for which see this disc).
Humble opinions: I'm not entirely satisfied with this version of "Sloth" as the band seem to fall asleep for two minutes toward the end (there are better 1970 live takes on this song if you know where to look!)
Here, it's not the improvisations that excite but the compositions which are attacked with tremendous enthusiasm throughout. The energy level never lets up, from the first guitar and fiddle breaks of "Sir Patrick Spens" to the "Sir B Mackenzie" medley (differently constituted to the version we all know). The slower numbers, the medieval-sounding "Staines Morris" and the stately lament "Battle of the Somme" are no less powerful (although "Sweet Primroses" still sounds incomplete to me). Richard sings "Matty Groves" in his youthful "rustic" voice (which is...different, I suppose) but largely cedes solo space to Swarb, who's on-fire throughout. Speaking of which, the fiddle tunes medleys are definite highpoints - you'll never hear ballsier versions of "MacKenzie" or the Liege & Lief medley than on this disc...and then there's the album's metaphorical centerpiece, the stunningly fast and loud "Mason's Apron" medley, which suggests they could have become the Ten Years After of the folk-rock world!
This album features just a fraction of the repertoire played by the Full House line-up - but it's a pretty brilliant setlist (with one obvious exception) and in the absence of a more thorough official-bootleg type release, this will do.
Must Have.......2007-03-18
If you are even a casual fan of Fairport or Richard Thompson this is a must have item.
Fairport Rocks LA - and it's all here for us to enjoy.......2006-01-05
Here we find Fairpoint Convention supporting their latest release "Full House" - which solidified their move towards traditional British isles material while at the same time moving towards a harder-rocking sound. The jigs are performed at a breakneck speed, which is perphaps unnecessary, but they work well anyway with new bassist Dave Pegg laying down solid, rockin' lines. Gone are the haunting and beautiful vocals of Sandy Denny, replaced by the simpler, rustic vocals of Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick. The highlight may very well be "Sloth" off of the new album - this live rendition brings even more emotion and power to the tune than the studio version. Also, look to get a kick out of the final tune on the disc- "Yellow Bird" It'll make you laugh - not because it sucks - but rather because it immensely entertains. If you dig 'Liege & Lief' and 'Full House'- you must check this out
This live album is mostly for long-time Fairport enthusiasts.......2002-03-27
This album has come out in a few different versions. I have the one previous to this; two additional songs have been added since then. The album captures the "Full House" lineup--the hardest-rocking of the many Fairport lineups--during a 1970 stand at the Troubador in Los Angeles. There are some good moments, but if you're looking for a live Fairport album, "Encore, Encore" and "The Cropredy Box" are far superior. The take on "Staines Morris" is a highlight. There is something here to enjoy for long-time Fairport fans, but for someone new to Fairport, this isn't a great place to start--go with "What We Did on Our Holidays" or "Full House" instead.

resin up the bow.......2006-01-11
Just grabbed this and blasted it in the headphones... a tremendous improvement on the utterly crappy-sounding original issue of this one. Hearing this one tempts me to run back out and buy the remasters of "Nine" and "Rosie".
The bonus tracks are revelatory, especially since I never heard Trevor sing John Prine. Only fault I can find is that the between-song talking parts weren't trimmed to allow the inclusion of the stunning "Days of '49" from the same Sydney shows, which you can find on the Australian "Fiddlestix" compilation on the Raven label.
Indeed, this particular incarnation (where they began to be referred to affectionately as "Fotheringport Confusion") is on par with the best of this incredible band.
This may be my favorite Fairport lineup..........2005-10-19
Richard Thompson or no Richard Thompson, Fairport's albums, beginning with LIEGE & LIEF, became less and less interesting until 3/5 of Fotheringay joined Fairport for the tour from which this album was recorded. This release signaled a return to the pre-LIEGE sound: mixing traditional tunes with Sandy Denny's songs, the occasional Dylan tune and some straight rock and roll. The rhythm section of Pegg/Mattacks is as good as you'd expect them to be, Jerry Donahue's guitar work is amazing, Swarb fiddles less with the sound and Sandy & Trevor's vocals are strong.
The original release of this album left us with the impression that Trevor Lucas was mostly in a supporting role. The bonus tracks finally demonstrate just how crucial Trevor was to this Fairport lineup. Too bad it didn't last. This was a powerful band. 4 1/2 stars.
More Alive & Longer.......2005-09-22
This the Re-mixed & Expanded version of the 1974 release of " Live Convention " is a vast improvement over the original LP/Cassette and CD that came prior. The sound has been overhauled and re-mixed from the original tapes and Five bonus tracks have increased the running time to 74 minutes.
Fairport wisely recorded these shows: Sydney Opera House, Rainbow Theatre, London & Fairfield Hall, Croydon to capture the Sandy Denny / Dave Swarbrick / Trevor Lucas / Jerry Donahue led band.
" Matty Groves" is first and it's a good one from Sandy with Swarb leading the boys with nice solos on the fiddle (parts of this are mixed into the" Matty Mega-Mix" on the "UnConventional Box Set")." Rosie" & "Fiddlestix " are next and showcase Swarb in fine form. Trevor get's the spotlight on "Something You Got" and a very nice version of "Sloth" is next with some very beautful Guitar solos from Jerry and a wonderful Bass solo from Mr. Dave Pegg, then Swarb goes "Cosmic" with his Fiddle (one of the best of 3,128 recorded versions out there). This Sloth is one of the short ones at only 11 and a half minutes.
"Dirty Linen", "Down in the Flood" & "Sir B. MacKenzie" rap the original release, then we get the "Bonus Tracks". " A brief introduction of the band then it's "The Hexhamshire Lass" finely sung by Swarb with Dave Mattacks drums matching eveything Swarb does on Fiddle. Trevor performs "Polly on the Shore" his best known tune and it's a stunner of a version. Next up is "Bring Em' Down" and it's the gem of this expanded edition of "Live Convention" at almost 14 minutes in length it's got Trevor's best vocal on disk and gives Swarb a chance to go ape$#!* on his fiddle with his Effect Pedals, it's brillant and just as Cosmic as what Ric Sanders does live in the current line-up...Fantastic track !!!
Things rap-up with "Far From Me" a tune by John Prine that Trevor covers quite nicely with just his great voice and acoustic guitar, this one is another welcome addition to "Live", Trevor, we miss you Mate! The new closer for this Disk is "That'll Be The Day" to end things on a Rock N' Roll way with Sandy singing and Jerry screamin' on his Fender.
This is a big improvement over the "Old" version, it's not a sonic marvel like the first two "Archive" releases but it's a solid 4 STAR CD.
The booklet inclosed with five pages of notes by Jerry Donahue tells you ton's about the Austrailian / Asian tour that gives you these recordings and how much money Fairport was in debt by the end of said tour... Funny Stuff.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

Six Guys In A Rowboat.......2004-08-25
This is the Broughton Castle Reunion Show. The proper title of this CD is " Moat on the Ledge ". Recorded 15 August 1981 this was the second reunion show performed after Fairport Convention's " Official " farewell show of 1979. To the Fairport faithful this show is known as the " Cropredy not held at Cropredy ".
Band line-up for this show:
Richard Thompson: Vocals & Lead Guitar
Dave Swarbrick: Vocals, Fiddle & Mandolin
Dave Pegg: Bass Guitar & Vocals
Simon Nicol: Vocals & Guitars
Dave Mattacks: Drums
Bruce Rowland: Drums
The disc opens with " Walk Awhile" and it's a great version! One of Fairport"s best tunes. Both Richard and Swarb battle to lead the band and Swarb wins on the opening number but Richard really dominates the 9 selections featured here. " Country Pie " is fun and has hyped-up ending. This a band having Big Fun and it transfers to disc quite well. " Rosie " is very sweet with wonderful singing from Swarb. " Matty Groves " is as performed 70"s style and Mr. Thompson rips it up here with his fantastic lead guitar playing. " Both Sides Now " Features Judy Dyble on vocals and recreates Fairport Convention 1968 spot -on. " Poor Will & The Jolly Hangman " is one of Richard Thompson / Dave Swarbrick's greatest tunes and this version could have easily been included on the Cropredy Box Set. " Brilliancy Medley / Cherroke Shuffle " is a very fast guitar & fiddle romp, speed- folk at it's finest! " Woman or a Man " is electric Thompson / Fairport and the energy shines through the years, this is the band where you want them, playin' great and havin' FUN! " High School Confidential " ( this is D, a
song in D ) is Fairportabilly at it's peak with Richard playing a million notes a minute and Swarb get's a nice liitle solo in here as well, a fine rave-up and a neat closer for " Moat On The Ledge ".
This CD is highly recommended as is the GP's from Friday night's show. The sound quality on this Remaster is a very big sonic boost from the original 1982 version. I would be quite happy to have a four CD set from the entire Saturday night show but to have this little gem is very nice as well.
Now is it time to release the video of this one on DVD ???
OK Fairport live album I'm surprised to find on CD.......2003-08-15
I didn't know this was on CD. This live album was recorded during the period when Fairport was officially "broken up". It's a pretty mixed bag, with several cover tunes that go in wildly different directions: Dylan's "Country Pie", Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now", and Jerry Lee Lewis' "High School Confidential". Highlights include the best version I've heard of "Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman" and the Richard Thompson rarity "Woman or a Man" (it also appeared on his solo acoustic "Small Town Romance" album). The sound quality is not great.

Just for fun, try playing this CD as a quiz for a musically knowledgeable friend. You can give one hint: the composer is well known. As the suite from the operetta The Bride Elect proceeds, you'll probably get guesses like Johann Strauss (during the opening waltz), Offenbach, or Victor Herbert. But when the concluding number, a march, arrives, the composer will be obvious. Sousa's operettas, if one judges from these orchestral selections, aren't highly original or even outstandingly tuneful. But they are good light entertainment, especially as played by this crack group of Slovak players under the direction of Sousa expert Keith Brion. Naxos's recording is as crisp and clear as the orchestral playing. Nice design, helpful program notes. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
A good, not great, live album.......2002-03-24
This live album was recorded in Australia in 1974, when Fairport was touring behind the album "Nine". Happily, not only are there no songs from that weak album here, but Trevor Lucas is limited to one lead vocal because his wife Sandy Denny rejoined the band during the tour. "Matty Groves", "Sloth", and "Rosie" are all here, but there are better live versions of all three available on the market. The highlights are the instrumentals: "Fiddlestix", "Dirty Linen", and "Sir B. MacKenzie" (the original title of the latter once held the Guinness record for longest song title), and Denny's menacing "John the Gun".
(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)
Live Fairport with Denny to boot!.......2000-04-16
This is the recording that got me completely swept into Fairport and Sandy Denny. I first gave them a serious listen in 76 at the age of 19. A&M had done a retrospective that year. I was very impressed, particularly with the Denny and Thompson material. A few weeks later, I stumbled across a Fairport album in the cut out bargain bin. It was called "A Moveable Feast". It was and still is one of my all time favorite live recordings of any type of music. For years, I'd wondered why it hadn't seen the light of day on CD. I come to find out this very day that it has, under this title! The versions of Matty Groves and Sloth here are spectacular. Sandy's voice had deepened a bit and on these tracks, you really get to hear her rock with an edge that recalls Grace Slick at her best. The only weak track here is Swarbrick's Rosie, but he sure sets that fiddle of his on fire on the jigs and reels. The result is electrified Britsh Bluegrass. The duet with Sandy and husband Trevor Lucas on Somethin You Got is wonderfull. She soars all over in her call back type vocals to Trevor. Dylan's Down In The Flood is done here to perfection. The drunken sounding version on Denny's Northstar Grassman album was ok, but doesn't measure up to this at all. This recording was the first of Sandy's return to Fairport. A return that didn't last more than one more trip to the studio in 75 for Rising For The Moon. An album that was to yeild both greatness and mediocrity. There are several live Fairport albums out there. For God's sake, get this one first! You'll NEVER tire of it. In fact, I'm ordering it right now at 5 am
