    My first introduction to Al Petteway and Amy White was the "acoustic Journey" album that I received by donating to National Public Radio. As an acoustic guitarist myself, I really appreciated the great talent and wonderful arrangements. Curious, I checked Amazon.com for more of their music and was attracted to "Land of the Sky" which focused more on southern Appalachian folk music, albeit in a more stylized form. Still, I found it very soothing and at times, emotional, especially the intrumental version of "Shady Grove". I also bought the "Holiday Sampler" because it's a wonderful alternative to the traditional music-box albums I normally play at Christmas time. I'd give it three thumbs up if I had them!

    When the Scots, Irish, Welch, and English settlers populated the mountain valleys, hills, and mountains of Southern Appalachia, they brought their music with them as an integral part of their culture. In Land Of The Sky, Al Petteway and Amy White deftly collaborate to memorably perform within that Southern Appalachian music tradition and heritage for the benefit and delight of a new generation of listeners with recorded performances that include both original and traditional compositions of mountain melodies played on acoustic guitars, the mandolin, the Celtic harp, the banjo, fiddles, the Irish Bouzouki, Fretless Bass, percussion, and vocals.     While I do not consider myself an expert in acoustic guitar music, I have over the years collected and listened to a lot of such music. Like most everyone, I know what I like, and I like the music of Al Petteway and Amy White a great deal.

    This CD may be their best. It is musically rich and as all are of their CDs, it is innovative. A good example of that is their version of the standard folk song, "Pretty Polly".

    There is not a bad cut on the CD, and like other great artists, the CD's theme of an Appalachian journey not only holds together, it works quite well. I have listened to this CD over and over and find something new every time. This is one to buy and keep.

    This is not the The Real Nirvana....But they have a funky sound that is not half bad....I just wished that they had chosen an origanal name....on the other hand....our band is named the coastal primates....I can not say there is no other band with that name....but if that other band became popular....{!?}

    I first heard this release at Borders a long time ago. I thought the cover looked interesting, and that's usually my determining factor in finding good music. I didn't know what I was getting into. I didn't know that one man's vision would lead me into appreciating all genres of music. Although all the musicians did an amazing job on this record (Marshall H's contribution helped me coin the term "night music", which is what it truly is), I single them all out when it comes to Soul Slinger. His distinct sound and way of thinking has really helped me as a human being and as a creator of words, worlds, and music, and I thank him forever for that. I owe a lot to him and the other visionaries on the Jungle Sky label. I only hope one day that I can meet him, share ideas, listen to some alien music.... I believe....

    They ALL do not know what they are talking about (except for the one guy who knows what this CD is about)

    This is the fourth in the series of Jungle releases from Liquid Sky Music (now defunct... for the time being). Amazingly, this was the debut of a few new names on the label: Frank Heiss (aka Tube) and 1.8.7 (now known as Jordana). Ben Neill also appeared as a Soul Slinger remix.

    A very hardcore CD for the relaxed Jungle fan, but most people won't either a)understand what this label accomplishes through every release or b)understand the music. Take a pick.

    btw, for the music fan in America, lot's of people have done parodies of Nirvana's Nevermind CD; I'm guessing you walk with your eyes closed...

    I ran across this album by chance and on a random hunch I bought it. I love listening to these guys play the flute, drums and guitar, so I've got to say that this is one of the best CD buys I ever made. I can't rave enough about it, so I'm going to stop now before I start rambling about how everyone should buy it!

    Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

    There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

    I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

    The composers of these songs were almost all born in the second half of the 19th century. Their attempt was to create an "American music" from native American sources of rhythm and tonality. I get the same sense of hearing original music with these songs as I got the first time I heard Erik Satie. The songs tend to be melodic and peaceful and fresh. Don't expect much in the way of tom-toms and movie indian harmonies. I love to find songs that go to unexpected places. I found that here.
