Editorial Reviews
The Civil War News, May, 1992
"This reviewer cannot express how enjoyable this tape is... the quality of their music is first rate."

Product Description
The 2nd South Carolina String Band recorded their first album, WE'RE TENTING TONIGHT, in 1991. Containing 15 of the most popular songs of the War Between the States, it was well received from the start and continues to have strong appeal. In fact, it was so well received that the band was encouraged to produce a second album, WE ARE A BAND OF BROTHERS, released two years later in 1993. This recording profited from the experience gained since the first - being produced in a better studio with better technology - as well as from two years of performances together by a band whose reputation was rapidly spreading. This second album contained another 15 of the most well known songs of the era, thus making the two together a sort of "Top 30" of the Civil War.

Many years later, these albums continue to attract listeners and fans, new and old. So much so that, pursuant to countless requests to bring them both out on CD, we have done just that! We are proud to offer our first two albums together at last on one recording. The best of WE'RE TENTING TONIGHT and WE ARE A BAND OF BROTHERS, are here presented with a driving, spirited and exciting sound worthy of the men whose memory and spirit we strive to honor and evoke.

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars A Beatles classic.......2007-07-31

One of the greatest Beatles albums. This issue comes in a single crystal case with just an insert with the cover picture and song titles - no booklet of info on the album. Such an important album deserves an information booklet. One star subtracted for that.

4 out of 5 stars beatles best.......2007-07-28

i wanted to give this 5 stars but octopus`s garden and maxwells silver hammer are the only negative tracks."something" is incredible (john lennon at his best).but i have to take my hat off to paul macartney for what is on side b."golden slumbers" and "carry that weight" are class..."mean mr mustard and polythene pam" are brilliant, but "you never give me your money" is in my opinion the best beatle track.it was the first time i had heard a song go in so many different directions but just come together so well.

5 out of 5 stars The Beatles Just Got Better.......2007-07-27

So many groups seem to fade away in their creativity and sound. But the Beatles pushed it to the limit each and every time. Even as they were drifting apart as a group, their music continued to push boundaries of creativity and sound, leaving other groups behind in awe. Even to the point of a 23 second song called "Her Majesty" They literally did not waste a second.

Abbey Road, the title itself sums up the CD. The road that became a studio, that became a household name, to the point where 40 years later there are television specials of present day artists recording in the Abbey Road studios.

It doesn't get much better than Abbey Road!

4 out of 5 stars Second Side is the Best.......2007-07-24

The second side of Abbey Road is my all time favorite record. I have listened to this album hundreds of times over since 1969, I think. The first side is pretty good-- I'd give it 3 stars. But the second side is fabulous. .-- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC AND OTHER STRANGE STORIES.

5 out of 5 stars Top 3 beatles albums........2007-07-23

This is a very great, very influential album by the beatles, and in my opinion it is one of their best, along with sgt. pepper and the white album of course.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Start...but hopefully a better one will come along.......2007-07-10

As far as greatest hits by the band, this I believe is the first one of studio cuts anyway. I saw this one in the Spring in the top Ten at Amazon, and was wondering why all the sudden interest in Bon Jovi, of course they did just come out with a new CD, and the new stuff is pretty good, me myself recently got the Remasters of their first 3 or 4 Cd's, and I admit that "Keep The Faith" was the last one I bought...But I did get the big box set of rarities 100 Million fans can't be wrong, so they are indeed my major rock guilty pleasure.

Is there no "Essential" Bon Jovi yet?, didn't see one...I was hoping for a 2 CD set of their hits along with a few deeper album cuts by now not that I need that, just that it would seem it's time for that since they've been around for 20 plus years now. Hopefully it isn't far off, this band deserves a better career collection than this one, I can't imagine the casual fan wanting this lacking set, even the order is strange. Of course the hardcore Bon Jovi fan likes about every one of their songs, maybe only 4 or 5 from the first album, but even I like most of the songs on 7800 degrees, and an essential would have to have Tokyo Road and Silent Night on it or I would not buy it. As far as Slippery, New Jersey...every song on those should be essential, maybe one or two left off...and that they are not on the greatest hits as this is known, is a major flaw. I'm thinking the ultimate Bon Jovi greatest hits set would have to have at least 4 songs each from the first two CD's, and then maybe 5 or 6 from Slippery, New Jersey, and Keep The Faith? That would fill out 2 Cd's I think and make a nice collection; better than this one for sure.

Hopefully fans new and old will get a better restrospective soon, this one is a nice start I guess, but I would highly recommend checking out their remastered catalog for more hits. They don't have many duds at all at least on their first 4 or 5 Cd's. The late 90's one's I don't know, perhaps an essential collection would contain some newer songs...but classic Bon Jovi is good enough for now.

4 out of 5 stars A great Bon Jovi collection.......2007-06-09

For the most part, this is a great Bon Jovi collection. I do not equally enjoy every song on this album, but this collection includes nearly all of their early hits.

5 out of 5 stars Cross Road.......2007-06-09

I love this CD, it's awesome, the songs are the best. Especially "Always", "Bed of Roses" and "I'll be there for you"

4 out of 5 stars Decent Beginner's Set.......2007-05-22

For people who only know Bon Jovi from their "Have A Nice Day" and beyond years, "Cross Road" is a very good collection of tunes for them to check out. It gives the listener a solid set of their most popular tunes from their hair band heyday before they got all earthy/Mellencampy. This album is by no means a complete gathering of their greatest tunes. It leaves out at least two songs ("Living In Sin" and "Born To Be My Baby") and instead fills those holes with the dismal "Prayer '94," the forgettable "Always" and the harbinger of things to come, "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." "Someday" is actually a very good modern roots rocker, but people don't buy greatest hits albums for the new songs. People buy this album for songs like the original "Livin' on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead Or Alive," "Bad Medicine," and "I'll Be There For You."

Lesser known tunes from their earliest offerings(particularly "Runaway") signal the beginnings of a great band to come. Later songs such as "Keep The Faith" and "Bed Of Roses" reveal a band in rock decline and quickly headed for the adult contemporary sound. In short, "Crossroad" gives the listener a pretty good take on how a band from Jersey made it big, leveled off, then headed for the sweet and steady success of light rock. Just to shake things up a bit, "Blaze Of Glory" from Jon Bon Jovi's solo "Young Guns II" project is included. Sadly, we do not get a sample from any of Richie Sambora's solo works. He really is a much better guitarist than he's given credit for, and it would have been nice for one of his tunes to be included in this collection.

I grew up during Bon Jovi's prime, and am proud to say that I own original cassette copies of "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey." Although they weren't my favorite hair/glam/hard rock band (that was Def Leppard), they were still one of the best around at the time. Bon Jovi is no longer the band they once were, but for people who want to know where they came from, this is the album to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars BON JOVI AT THEIR BEST!!!.......2007-02-17

Words cannot describe how awesome BON JOVI is!!! I am their #1 fan and no other group in this world produces such quality / entertaining / heartfelt music. I RECOMMEND YOU BUY HAVE A NICE DAY and ALL OF THEIR CDs!!!

The heartland rocker's first album of all-new material in more than five years finds John Mellencamp in full anthem mode. This is his State of the Union address, with guitars that chime like the Byrds heralding sentiments that recall the socially-conscious 1960s, yet sound all the more pertinent today. Balancing the desolate landscape of "Ghost Towns Along the Highway," the hell-on-earth of "Rural Route," and the tolls demanded on the title track's "Freedom's Road" are the embrace of brotherhood on "Someday," the Everyman populism of "The Americans," and the soaring transcendence of "My Aeroplane." Within the context of the album's song cycle, the "Our Country" centerpiece sounds richer and more powerful than it has as a truck commercial--like a roots-rocking sequel to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land." Mellencamp enlists Joan Baez for a duet on the protest ballad "Jim Crow," while saving his most blistering political commentary for the unlisted bonus track, "Rodeo Clown." --Don McLeese

I enjoy this new side of John Mellencamp. Even though he sold "Freedom's road" for a car commercial. We all have to live.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've purchased in a very long time.......2007-07-23

I originally purchased this CD for the song heard in commercials, "This Is Our Country". What I found were several heart & conscience wrenching songs that I cannot get out of my head. I highly recommend this, but I would buy 2. You might wear the first one out!

4 out of 5 stars Love the songs.......2007-07-18

This is my first Mellencamp CD and I love the songs on the CD. I didn't give it 5 stars because there is a technical problem with this batch of CDs. The last song (maybe it's really 2 songs) has a 2 minute gap about 4 1/2 minutes into the song. I got it replaced, but the replacement had the same problem.

5 out of 5 stars Mellencamp Is Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-17

Yes he is back to his good ole days of his Scarecrow,Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy days. A MUST for all his fans

4 out of 5 stars Mellencamp's Return to Greatness!.......2007-07-03

Finally returning to the music that made him great, John Mellencamp nails it with this CD. Although not a Scarecrow or Jubilee, this is a solid CD which definitely harkens back to these other works. We've definitely missed him and his music. Although fans will always buy whatever he puts out, it was clear that he was trying new musical paths that didn't completely work for him until he woke up with this effort! Thanks John! You didn't forget your roots after all.

Album Description

The Road Back Home is the first `Best Of' compilation by the now legendary Swedish progressive rockers. The Road Back Home features 27 classic Flower Kings tracks which have been personally hand-picked and re-mastered by the band's founder and driving force, Roine Stolt, giving the listener a unique and comprehensive front-row look into band's evolution and creative process. The compilation also features a previously unreleased cover version of the classic Genesis song, Cinema Show.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't ignore this "best of" just because it appears to be superfluous..........2007-07-27

I admit that I initially hesitated on this purchase.
I mentally listed all the reasons that I did not need this latest Flower Kings compilation:
1.) I have practically everything they've put out over the past ten years.
2.) I actually enjoy their longer prog epics more than these shorter songs that they assembled.
3.) Shouldn't we just leave the original versions alone, shortcomings and all?

But thanks to convincing reviews like the one from my esteemed colleague from Istanbul, I cast all fears aside and immersed myself into 153 more minutes of re-mixed and re-mastered FK music - thankfully! This is just such an enjoyable collection; long-time fans get to hear these shorter gems in a slightly different way (one great song after another), and newcomers to the band get a fabulous introduction to the melodic style and virtuosity of the band. Roine Stolt's liner notes help both the fans and the newbies to understand the message or style that the band was trying to convey on each track, as well as what changes were made for this recording. Many pictures of the various band members populate the liner notes as well, along with the usual colorful artwork that graces all of the FK cd's.

Oh, and don't overlook their cover of Genesis' "The Cinema Show" - you want proof of just how good these musicians are? (I know, it's tempting, tempting.......Add...to...cart?...)

This was a very ingenious way for the band to get some of its more accessible works out to the inquisitive public, but also to reward the avid fan with yet another affirmation of this band's wealth of ideas and talent (before their next album comes out later this year!).
Buy with confidence and delight.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9/10; Performance = 9.3/10; Production = 9.5/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.2 ("4-1/2 stars")

5 out of 5 stars The Kings even better.......2007-07-23

The Flower Kings are one of the best band in the progressive band's world. I bought this CD and i just can't stop listen to it over and over again... This is simply amazing. All songs are re-mixed and re-worked version and the result is very good. One unreleased track from the Rainmaker album session is included for our pleasure.... hehehe. Well the rest is order the CD and enjoy it as i do.

3 out of 5 stars Messin' with Success.......2007-07-03

First off, I absolutely love the Flower Kings and anxiously await their next release. This one though.....
OK, let me get this off my chest first - why, oh why would you play with the perfection that is the original "Church of Your Heart"? When I saw this on the CD's pre-release playlist on the TFK website, I was counting the days until it arrived just to hear a remastering of this song. (I think all TFK fans can agree that while "Stardust We Are" is one of the best albums of all time, it is also one compressed sonic mess). But instead of a nice clean remastering, we get a complete remix, and, gasp - an entire section of the song - a critical section in my eyes - is totally gone! Disappointed hardly covers it.
And therein lies the problem, for me. Most of these songs weren't just remastered, they were remixed as well. Instruments are added or taken away, changing the complexion of the songs in someways good but mostly not. For the most part, the new productions just don't stand up to the old. Several tunes, like "World Without a Heart" sound lifeless, are missing key instrumental parts (where is the lovely piano part in WWAH?) or have had the sometimes rough edges dulled down until they don't have the same impact the originals did.
Roine evidently has disdained the use of reverb for the new mixes, and for me, this new "dry" sound doesn't serve this type of music well.
Overall, it WAS a somewhat fun first listen, and of course the songs are pretty much wonderful anyway, but while there are great moments, I can't imagine listening to this one again anytime soon.
Having said that, thanks Roine for the effort - the liner notes are indeed exceptional, and maybe there is hope that you'll find time to go back and remaster (but NOT remix) the classic TFK albums like Stardust We Are, Flower Power and Rainmaker. Wouldja, please????

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Exciting.......2007-07-02

The Flower Kings (Roine Stolt) take some of their shorter progressive rock tracks and re-mix and remaster them. The chosen list is pretty good and covers their entire career up to this point. The extra, never released track "Little Deceiver" from the Rainmaker sessions is nothing special.

The remixing doesn't seems to improve the songs much and actually seems to make them 'softer.' I word I could use is 'pillowy'....almost giving some of the slower parts of songs a new-age feel to them (not a good thing in my opinion). The punch of the original songs is missing, replaced by a broadening effect to fully take up the sonic range. Another point of dissapontment......should you really mess with "Church of Your Heart?" The classic Flower Kings song has been truncated and the dramatic key change at the last part of the original version is gone. That was the part of the song that got me hooked on the song in the the first place. Also "I am the Sun part II" seems to be truncated as well, and again, the best part of the song, in my opinion, is missing.

Songs picked from newer releases (Adam + Eve and Paradox Hotel) are less affected by the mixing and come off much like the originals.

All-in-all, this is a good collection of Flower King songs, but the remixing doesn't seem that great of an improvement of the originals.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with Murat.......2007-06-28

Thank you Murat, for the fine review. I agree with everything you mentioned. I give the album 5 stars; it's that good.

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.

Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

for 3 decades, i listened to the original album on both vinyl & maxell cassette tapes. while reading the booklet enclosed in the c.d., i read how they were able to add additional dialogue by ronnie van zant, additional crowd reaction, additional guitar solo licks, even an additional "Cream" cover, all unavailable on my double album set. also, alternate versions of afew songs were added on disc 2. all that i can say is "WOW" !!!!!!!!!

a job splendidly well done, in this remastered, reissued "WORK OF ART"!!

ANY skynyrd fan MUST HAVE this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07

This is Skynyrd at their peak, I will argue this was the best rock band on the planet at the moment this album was recorded.

I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.

I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.

The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).

I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.

It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)

I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.

I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!.......2007-03-19

This is one of the best all-time live albums in rock history and it depicts Lynyrd Skynyrd at their peak. These songs never get old and are just as great if you are at a party or listening alone!

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the essence.......2007-03-08

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" captures the bands innovative sound live during the group's ascendancy. Their following during this time became more than a "cult" following and after having played on the road for years, their sound became tight and smooth. They could replicate the studio sound quite easily with some improvisation to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!.......2007-02-02

Having seen Skynyrd blow the Who right off the stage in 1973 this album audibly shows what they could do. You can feel it. Southern Shmuthern! It's Rock and Roll at it's best. If you didn't know where they were from you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People get hung up on this southern rock thing. BFD!! These guys worked to get where they got and are anything but mediocre. I've read the same thing about the Beatles.. that they were mediocre at best! Yeah right!!
This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest.......2007-07-17

Peter Green had some big shoes to fill, but he did it very nicely. This is a MUST have cd for PG fans, or fans of the blues guitar. This contains everything that PG did with John Mayall. This is great!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reissue.......2007-05-08

This is a reissue of the classic 1966 album with Peter Green, John McVie and Aynsley Dunbar supporting John Mayall. The music remains as great as it was forty years ago with some excellent Mayall songs and great Green guitar all backed by the excellent rhythm section. The additions from odd sessions and single releases are an icing on the cake. If you like British 60's electric blues and you do not already have this cd, then you need to buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Man... all of the tracks with "Greeny" plus!.......2007-04-17

Woah.....this is just stunning!

Peter Green's whole set of tracks from the original album, plus all the cool tracks he was on from "Looking Back" and other compilation albums too,....PLUS out-take tracks that made me wonder where the band's heads were when they passed-up on them for the original release!

This is all killer, and leads you right up to Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac years. The sound is punchy and has a warmth that was missing from past re-issues of this material too.

I didn't realize that this collected all those other tracks from various 1970's "comp" albums. But when I got it home and started listening and reading the liner notes,...WOW It's your one stop shopping spot for Peter Green's formative recordings!

Highly recommended! John Mayall's life in music did NOT end when "God",ooops,I mean Clapton left.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues at it's Best!.......2007-01-18

What an incredible album and perfect follow up to the "Beano" album with Eric Clapton.
This album introduced Peter Green to the masses as he stepped into EC's shoes.
With the addition of uber-drummer Ansley Dunbar, this album takes it to the next level...even better than the "Beano" album i.m.h.o. The band is super tight, the songs are all off the hook...much more memorable with more variety in tempo, feel, orchestration, etc. Mayall's voice sounds awesome, the best it ever has and full of gritty emotion. Then of course is Peter Green's incredible gutar playing & vocals. BB King has been quoted as saying Peter Green was the best blues guitarist he ever heard...I believe him.

Peter Green went on to form Fleetwood Mac after this album and write "Black Magic Woman", among his many other accomplishments. Guitar players love to referenece the "Beano" album, which is of course a classic, but for those really in the know "A Hard Road" is THE album.

5 out of 5 stars An introduction to an unknown master blues guitarist.......2006-04-21

Peter Green is one of those guys you just don't hear about, yet he wrote "Black Magic Woman," the classic Santanna hit and penned what is possibly one of the finest blues tinged instrumentals - Albatross. You can hear him in the guitar playing of Billy Gibbons, and Carlos Santanna. Peter along with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie started the band Fleetwood Mac - perhaps the finest of the British Blues bands. Yet he remains relatively unknown and unappreciated. This album is a fine introduction. Other albums recommended would include "Shrine 69" with Fleetwood Mac and "The biggest thing since colossus" with Otis Spann. To those who have never heard of Peter Green, and you love blues, I envy you your journey of discovery!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Green God.......2006-11-26

The song "The Supernatural" is why I started playing guitar and was my introduction to Peter Green who went on to steal Mayall's drummer and bass player (Mick Fleetwood and John Macvie) and started Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac which was a chicago style blues band.

1 out of 5 stars Classic album ruined by remastering.......2006-07-30

I love this album but my copy of the CD sounded like crap.Totally ruined by remastering. Some tracks had no drums or bass, others had been remixed horribly.Save your money and TRY to get the original UN remastered.Big disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome CD.......2004-03-25

This is one of the best blues albums ever made and it came from accross the pond. Peter Green is awsome (SRV is better though by a lot soory to one of the past reviewers its just true) in fact Green is better or as good as Clapton. This album and the one with Clapton is a must for classic rock and blues fans!

5 out of 5 stars The 60's were so amazing:.......2004-02-06

It seemed as though everyone was trying to outdo themselves back then. We knew the next Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, or Yardbirds record whould at least try,(and often succeed), to be different and better than their previous release. But who would have thought that Mayall could do that without Clapton? Enter Peter Green, after 37 years, still the greatest white electric blues lead guitarist -ever-, (apologies to Bloomfield, EC, and SRV fans).

4 out of 5 stars Roots.......2004-02-04

Want to hear the best blues guitarist ever at a seminal point in his development? Get this CD and listen to "The Supernatural", Peter Green's Scorpionic mid-sixties instrumental. Deep and expansive, this track is head and shoulders above the rest of the album. "Black Magic Woman" and many of Carlos Santana's guitar excursions are firmly based on this first-ever Green tune.
Peter Green has been mentioned alongside many guitarists. But, he truly stands alone. He had Hendrix's expansiveness and a depth that no other guitarist approached, white OR black. Yes, that sounds outrageous and the tracks on this LP won't substantiate that claim. But, that one track will show where this 19 year-old was about to go. By the time he quit at 24, he was somewhere very special. If you are into Clapton, Beck or Page, you probably won't understand what all the fuss is about this Peter Green guy. But, if you want to FEEL...there is no better guitarist to experience.

The rest of the album is very good to poor. Mayall can sound excellent, as on "Someday After Awhile" or terrible "A Hard Road". The rythm section is solid and Aynsley Dunbar was one of the most interesting drummers around. He sounded like a "lead" instrument at the kit. But, Green hated it. He thought it was too busy! The man was such an incredible stickler for FEELING.

Buy this if you're willing to separate the wheat from the chaff.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Mountain Album.......2007-01-12

Mountain was always a band that sounded better live than in the studio. Leslie West and the band gave a truly inspired performance on this record. I have the vinyl album as well as the cd because its a favorite of mine. Here you will find the absolute best recorded renditions of Nantucket Sleighride and Long Red. Ray Knight's keyboard playing on Sleighride is a beautifully atmospheric addition to Leslie West's soaring solos. Long Red is West's tour de force as he creatively improvises on a theme. His phrasing is always so effective, he can say more with three or four notes than many guitarists can with a dozen. If you only own one Mountain album, this is the one I'd recommend.

5 out of 5 stars youth revisited.......2006-07-09

I pulled my old lp copy of this out the other night (remember those? kids actually have no clue about them today) and was as blown away as I was 30 years ago. Why doesn't music sound like that anymore? Today's performers - some of them are artists - don't get involved with the music. My theory lately is that the perception has switched from the strength being given to the instrumentation to vocal virtuosity, which to me sounds like just so much warbling. I am far more interested in a good story and in competent musicianship than in someone demonstrating how much they know about range. I hope the mood shifts again back to real artistry, but until then I have these old gems that so transported me in my salad days. This particular rendition of "Nantucket Sleighride" is the best, hands down, and I've listened closely to all the recorded versions. It takes up all of one side of the original disc but doesn't lag anywhere. The balance of the album is good also, a real rockin effort. Step back into the 70s and enjoy real music from good times.

5 out of 5 stars "Timeless Mountain".......2005-11-06

Yes this CD only has four songs on it but it is Timeless Mountain for sure. Having been a musician and knowing Felix Pappalardi personally Mountain was a big inspiration to me as much as The Beatles were to many. The talent in this band is Mountainous.

I had been looking for this album on CD for years and when I saw it here at Amazon I didn't think twice I purchased it immediately. Savoring the tracks from the smooth melodic Long Red to the timeless Rock mastepiece Nantucket Sleighride with a rarely heard nicely done keyboard solo from Steve Knight.

Mountain's natural thick sound of Leslie West's rip roaring guitar chords and licks, Felix Pappalardi's bumble bee sounding bass, Steve knight's melodic keyboards and Corky Laing's thunder can all be heard live. This CD is truly Timeless Mountain.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Road to take.......2005-08-19

I Loved Mountain and was very fortunate to see them many times.
This is the way I remember them in concert.
When you listen to this album you will be swept away by the atmosphere and by the passion these guys generated.
This is by far THE definitive version of Nantucket Sleighride.
Mountain at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain.......2005-04-09

This is one of the best "Live" recordings of all time for rock and roll. Lelsie West is still one of the greatest guitar players ever. Felix's sound on bass is very unique and Cory Laings drums are top notch. Poor Steve Knight on keyboards, no respect! This is a must for Mountain fans! Even if you are not a huge fan, this is one to have in your collection. Pure rock and roll at its finest!

5 out of 5 stars This is the Kinks at their best.......2007-08-01

Let me just tell you that if you have never heard of the Kinks, then you better go out and listen to this album.

They are what truly (in my opinion) created the portal for rock.

I know that may not be the case in other peoples' eyes, but trust me. You will find yourself listening to this album on those long boring trips, and before you know it you will be screaming "Victoria" or whistling "Celluloid Heroes"

A must have for ANY Kinks fan.

5 out of 5 stars klassic kinks.......2007-03-12

If you want a fantastic representation of them at their creative zenith , this is it. Of course nothing by them would dissappoint.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Live Albums Ever........2006-12-28

I received The Kinks' 1979 live album "One For The Road" today as a belated Christmas gift, and I must say I am stunned at how good it is. It is practically forgotten in the great pantheon of rock live albums (which include, among others, The Who's "Live At The Leeds", The Rolling Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" and The Allman Brothers' "Live At The Fillmore East"), and yet it rightfully belongs.

What you get on "One For The Road" are 19 (not counting introductions) solid, energetic performances of Kinks klassics such as "Lola", "All Day And All Of The Night", "You Really Got Me" and "Victoria" as well as a host of lesser known tracks like "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "Low Budget" and "Attitude". There's also a fantastic version of their 1972 classic "Celluloid Heroes" that has an almost haunting effect.

The cd adds two bonus tracks, "20th Century Man" and a blazing finale of "David Watts". The cd has been remastered in SACD, and I must say the sound quality is fantastic. The liner notes are great, and overall this is definitely a great addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Must buy for fans of British rock..........2006-08-09

If you like straight up no nonsense rock and roll, the Kinks are for you. Dave Davies "cooks" on this CD and is surely underrated when it comes to all time great rock guitarists. The BEST version of Celluloid Heros is worth the price of this CD alone and you'll love the rest.

5 out of 5 stars For the young generation.......2005-10-30

The Kinks are at the same level as The Who,as one English groups, that during the 60's in some way, anticipated the various types of music, like Garage-rock or Punk. The music and the lyrics are excellent, but were often misinterpreted by the English.
''One For The Road'',was recorded live in 1979,and even though many years have passed since the group was formed, listening ''Lola'' or ''You really got me''is unforgettable. The younger generation should't miss this record, because it gives them the possibility to listen to one of the most important banda from the 60's.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!
