Disappointing.......2007-06-16

I'm not sure exactly what I would call McEvoy's music, but I guess it's mostly rock, or folk rock. Usually her music is entertaining and upbeat.

I've liked McEvoy's other CDs, like 'Snapshots' and 'Eleanor McEvoy', but this CD was a disappointment. The songs were rather dull, none differing from each other very much in tune or beat. The only ones I even listen to are Days Roll By, I'll Be Willing, Slipping Away, and At the End of the Day.

Instead of buying this CD, I recommend buying a different CD of McEvoy's, or try some of Mary Black, Maura O'Connell, Sinead Lohan, or June Tabor's music. You can sample many good artists with both of the 'A Woman's Heart' CDs (where I learned about all artists above as well as Eleanor McEvoy). Good luck.

Do not be Mislead.......2005-09-28

This is without no doubt a five star cd, as her previous works. Eleonor Mcevoy is an excellent interpreter, composer, songwriter,singer. She really has a beautiful voice and also her lyrics are very well written. One thing that I appreciate in her works is her versatility, she can performs different styles witout lossing her esence.

I have really come to love this album and Eleanor's lovely voice.

To fully appreciate it, you really need to give it a serious listening in a quiet setting. I admit, the first time I heard it, I was busy with other things, there was lots of noise in the background, and I just didn't appreciate it.

Now, having listened to it several times, I find that I just love it. The SACD recording is first rate and I actually love the fact that many songs are very ambient (meaning that you hear only her voice or only an instrument or two at any given time). I really showcases the difference between a plain CD and an SACD - there is just no way a plain CD could sound this good.

My favorite song is "Ave Maria", which is so beautiful it almost brings a tear to my eye (almost!, I am a manly man after all :)

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...........2005-08-20

It is astounding that the unfavorable and wrong-headed March 29 "review" above has remained for almost five months the sole, unchallenged customer review posted here concerning this truly remarkable recording. (Will some others who have appreciated Eleanor McEvoy's outstanding contributions to music please weigh in here and raise the average to nigh 5 stars, where it certainly should be?) "Early Hours" is a true joy to hear, but not for casually playing in the background. Attention must be paid, and well-spent will be your time in doing so. I am apparently not alone in these opinions, as a recent Irish Music Magazine Readers Poll voted "Early Hours" as Best Contemporary Album 2004-2005. Please remember that, after you receive the copy that you are just about to order, the liner notes in respect of each cut are required reading.

My only complaint is that I find the intro to "I'll Be Willing" to be reminiscent of "Mood Indigo", and it puts me in the wrong state of mind for the upbeat, catchy tune which follows. Apart from that itty-bitty peeve, this recording (both from the artist's side and the audio-engineering side) is perfect.

The Good News--It's Nothing Like Yola.......2005-03-30

That's good news, because it's important for song writers to grow. Unfortunately, with the exception of the jazzy first cut and number 10--Days Roll By--this album is padded with plebian music you can hear any night, any where. If you're looking for a folksy, fresh set of songs, buy Eleanor's first record, Yola. This one is an also-ran.

Beethoven was commissioned to compose music for British songs, but he was given free rein as to the music, not being constrained by the words. What he composed is marvelous, melodic, memorable, captivating, and haunting, to use just a few adjectives to describe this music. I have a 33-1/3 record (yes-vinyl) of other songs that he wrote for the Brits, and this CD is complementary to that - equally well performed. A person that likes OLD folksongs will be humming the tunes forthwith.

The UK's underground is well represented as Jimpster lay down the funkiest of grooves and The Bees bliss us out. Soul doesn't some any smoother than Faze 0's rare groove classic "Riding High" or Odyssey's "Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love" so poor yourself a large one and enjoy. Great compilation!.......2006-09-19

This is great listening for a mellow, romantic evening. It's got some sweet soul, some tasty electric chill, some smooth jazz, all of it quality stuff. Probably some songs you've heard (if you're over 40 you'll recognize hits by Marvin Gaye and Minnie Riperton), and there's lots of great music that I've never heard before this disk. Dusty Springfield and Depeche Mode in the same collection? It works!
