There may be no original Broadway cast recording more iconic than 1970's Company, with its funky organ sound and Elaine Stritch's not-quite-there high notes, but the December 2006 Broadway revival makes its own mark. For Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's piece about a single man observing the benefits and follies of marriage, director John Doyle borrows the same controversial concept he used for his 2005 Sweeney Todd: the actors playing instruments on stage (now referred to in many circles as "Doyle-izing," and not always with affection and delight). But when you're listening to a cast recording, as Bobby would say: What do you get? For one thing, you'll have to adjust to some different sounds created by Doyle and his music supervisor, Mary-Mitchell Campbell. It's a benefit in "Side by Side by Side," which begins with a jazzy double-bass line. It's a drawback in "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," in which the trio's doo-doots are replaced by their saxophone lines. You also get "Marry Me a Little," cut from the original show but by now very familiar and welcome, as well as a lot of the contextual dialogue before, between, and even within numbers. Finally, the strong cast led by Raul Esparza makes this the best-sung Company we've ever gotten (and they play very well too), and Stephen Sondheim's score is still a landmark in musical theater. There will never be a replacement for the original Broadway cast recording, but this revival recording can stand on its own and in some respects may be more flat-out enjoyable to listen to. --David Horiuchi

Maverick British director John Doyle, a 2006 Tony Award winner, enjoyed a surprise Broadway hit last year with his radical reworking of Sweeney Todd. He dispensed with the pit orchestra and handed all the instruments over to his on-stage performers, who doubled as musicians in between their turns acting and singing. Doyle has taken a similarly unorthodox approach to his revival of another Stephen Sondheim classic, the revered yet notoriously difficult to stage Company. As with Sweeney Todd, the results of this theatre-as-concert have entranced both critics and audiences. Raul...WOW.......2007-07-25

I LOVE the original cast recording of COMPANY. However I am too young to have enjoyed it on Broadway. When I heard John Doyle was adding his "double duty" magic and bring one of favorite current Broadway voices, Raul Esparza I couldn't wait! The wait was worth it. Raul is FANTASTIC. Being Alive is probably my favorite American musical theatre song in our lexicon, and Raul KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK! It's worth it just for this number. The supporting cast is great too. It would have gotten five stars if the finale number was included in this recording. this one ends with Being Alive. Whatever, it's great!

Of the 3 recordings of Comapny that I have, the latest Broadway revival is far and away the best. The extra dialogue brings back the focus much more than either the OBC or The Donmar recording of the mid 90's. It has hardly been off my cd player since getting back from Broadway, and has pride of place on the iPod. A must for any Sondheim fan.

Don't think, just because you have all the other versions of 'Company', you can do without this version. It has additional dialogue and superior sound. Highly recommended!

Raul Esparza's performance in this revival makes the album a must have. What a talent! What a show! Well worth the cost.

I fell in love with this show when I saw it in NYC and I promptly bought the cast recording upon my return. This was one of those shows that I'm sure will resonate with me for the rest of my life. Although the show doesn't seem to make much sense by listening to the cast recording, you understand what its about and even though this show was written more than 40 years ago, its still relevant today. The theme of marriage and domestic partnership is still something that remains in the minds of all people; whether married or single. This cd airs out all of the thoughts that we all have likely heard or felt in our lifetime.
This cd is truly beautiful and by far one of my favorite Broadway cast recordings of all time.

The Kimber Number Two tuning of the Piano Concerto is one those musical devices more felt than heard. Just intonation as utilized by, say, Harry Partch is so non-Western it strikes many ears as extra-terrestrial. In Kimberger, the 4ths and 5ths in the black keys are perfectly consonant. If you're reading this without benefit of hearing the music, it probably seems as if difficultly is an end in itself. Quite the contrary: Lou was all about simplicity. And strange to tell, this lesson came from none other than (ta-da) Schoenberg, who told him his model should be Mozart. Think Wolfy and Gamelan as you hear this music; it will fall together for you.

Keith Jarrett, as usual, is a virtuoso for all seasons in Lou's musics. The Stampede (reference Estampie, a vigorous Medieval dance) is crisp and powerful. The largo is achingly beautiful. Lou once said that among the differences between East and West Coast musicians was the lack of fear West Coasters have with a beautiful sound.

The only quibble I have with this recording is the somewhat distant sound of the ensembles. I think it keeps us at arm's length; I would have welcomed a more intimate relationship with the sonics.

Another Harrison Masterwork.......2002-07-29

I am always surprised at the lack of interest shown to the sublime music of Lou Harrison by the average music going public. Surely people who take Arvo Part and Steve Reich to their hearts can find a similar warmth for this marvelous composer. Harrison is a master composer, both intellectually stimulating and emotionally beautiful. And this CD is a marvelous place to start.

The Piano concerto is a marvelous piece. Tightly constructed, with brilliant viruoso passages, it walks the tightrope between East and West. You can hear echos of the Beethoven 4th, along with Balinese Gamelan and medieval techniques, overridden by Harrison's haunting melodic gift and a unique sense of instrumental color. The work is written for piano in just intonation, but Harrison uses the tuning system so well that the result isn't stark, like La Monte Young, but rather harmonious and sweet. This is a major repertoire piece and Keith Jarrett plays it beautifully.

The other work on the CD comes from another branch of Harrison's work, that for western instruments and Gamelan. The idea of mixing eastern and western instruments can turn gimickly, but not in the hands of Harrison. This is a beautiful piece, neither a "composed" imitation Balinese piece, nor a purely western piece, it achieves a true synthesis of the two.

I can't imagine that anyone interested in music wouldn't find this CD immediately enchanting. I give this my highest recommendation.

In SPITE of being over-produced........2006-10-29

Reviewer: M. Bromberg "dashbitters" complained that this "production is a bit too slick", and I'd concede that point if'n he wasn't just dead wrong that "her voice isn't very distinctive". Granted, you get her VERY distinctive voice much more clearly with her current band 'The Stone Coyotes', but it was definitely present here. "All Along The Watchtower" isn't "unfocused and weak", it is just a different take, in 1972, on Dylan. Bromberg is welcome to his opinion, but mine is that his review is wrong-headed. I've missed this album and thought about it a lot over the years as decades ago, I loaned this favorite vinyl LP to a girl whose stereo system (I hadn't realized) was one of those heat powered, sandpaper-and-nail rigs that returned my cherished album to me gouged, worn and warped. Recently, I've started getting together again with an old roommate, swapping music (CDs) and reading materials (paperbacks) and movies (DVDs) that delight, which prompted me to track down and purchase two copies of that prized LP on CD, one for me and one for him to take home and share with his kids and wife. Money well spent. I find songs 2, 3 and 4 (following number 1 - "All Along The Watchtower") a build-up to the evermore rising 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 culminating in a stomping "A Stone's Throw Away". The musicians on the album (Lowell George, Sneaky Pete, Asher, Kunkel, Keltner, Sklar, Spooner, Kortch[mar], Tutt, Emory Gordy) knew just who and what they were working with. Barbara Keith knew just what and who she was working with too; knew that she was over-produced, gave back the earnest money, walked away from the studio producers, and thank God, came back to music on her own terms. Please, do yourself a favor and go out and get 'The Stone Coyotes', especially "Situation Out of Control" and "fire it up", but don't neglect this effort. As Stephen Saunders said, "... get it now, and you will have a small treasury of perfect songs that will last you all your life."

Barbara`Keith is a Star.......2005-06-24

I bought this LP in 72 when it came out, and also bought the CD as An import a few years ago. Sadly Barbara came out at the same time as Bonnie Raiit, and the promoting bucks went to Bonnie. Barbara is everything Bonnie is and more. Not only does she Rock on All Along The Watch Tower, but she delivers both country & blues like no other. This is a must CD for everyones collection.

Struck by lightning.......2004-06-02

Keith's second solo of 1971 is one of those rare albums where you find that after repeated listenings you can recall every song. Brilliant writing, a true emotional pitch, a voice to die for, and the very best session players.

Forget about the country folk "genre", it's much larger than that. If you don't have it, get it now, and you will have a small treasury of perfect songs that will last you all your life.

It is a wonderful thing that, after 25 years of silence, Keith has returned with four CDs under the Stone Coyotes banner. There are flashes of the genius that animated her second solo, but it seems you only get hit by that kind of lightning once.

PS: Now to re-release her first solo, the world's least procurable piece of vinyl, which came out on Verve Forecast.

THE great lost album.......2004-06-01

I've had this on vinyl since it was released, and to my mind it may be the greatest "lost" album of all time. The musicianship (as expected from the L.A. "A" team of the era) is superb throughout, and all the songs are first rate. But it's the last two that make this a standout. "Rainy Nights" sets you up, and then "A Stone's Throw Away" delivers the goods. It still sends shivers down my spine. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Ronstadt, Coolidge, Emmy Lou, Bonnie and all those chicks, but this one effort is right up there with the best single album of any in that bunch. I can't vouch for the sonics of the CD, but the original vinyl is killer.

Barbara's too-slick 1972 album has a few gems.......2004-05-19

Released in that golden age when the record industry couldn't make albums by "California country" singer/songwriters fast enough, this early effort has a few rough gems ("The Road I Took to You," "Detroit or Buffalo"), and some good musicians (Lowell George of Little Feat, most notably), but it doesn't really shine. The production is a bit too slick, and her voice isn't very distinctive -- she's not a belter like Linda Ronstadt, not a crooner like Rita Coolidge -- so even a song as dynamic as Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" sounds unfocused and weak. Delaney and Bonnie had a modest hit with Barbara's best song here, "Free the People," and it's the one song she delivers with some real conviction, but the album suffers from too much pop production and not enough kick.

It is pointless to compare Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet to Shake-
speare's - as it is Hamlet the opera is a beautiful and effec-
tive work on its own right. While Sherrill Milnes and Joan
Sutherland do not exactly sound youthful they sing very well
and blend beautifully together and offer memorable performan-
ces. Milnes is a strong Hamlet - tormented and tormenting -
and his french enunciation throughout is examplary. Joan Su-
therland is a warm and tender Ophelie and despite her years
(56)delivers the coloratura of the mad scene with brio if not
the old dash. Barbara Conrad and James Morris are a bit gritty
sounding as the Queen and King but it suits their characters.
Gosta Winbergh sings ravishingly in the small role of Laerte
and John Tomlinson with his dark sonorous voice creates a
chilling effect as the ghost-king. Chorus and orchestra are
splendid and Richard Bonynge conducts masterly - excellent
sound.

Haydn's MASS Appeal.......2006-03-09

The great Franz Joseph Haydn remains unquestionably one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music, having laid down the template for the forms of the string quartet, and perfecting the symphonic form a hundred and four times over. But "Papa" Haydn also was prolific in the area of sacred music, composing two great oratorios ("The Seasons"; "The Creation"), and a staggering fourteen settings of the Latin Mass.

Four of those settings of the Mass are to be found on this 2-CD compilation of recordings made back in the 1980s by Sir Neville Marriner and the Dresden State Orchestra (Staatskapelle Dresden), along with a cadre of vocal soloists, organist Hansjurgen Schloze, and the Leipzig Radio Chorus. The "Little Organ" (no. 7), "Heiligmesse" (no. 10), "Lord Nelson" (no. 11), and "Theresiemesse" (no. 12), are all given impassioned and towering performances, especially given the fact the size of the orchestra is not much larger than that of the composer's symphonies (no trombones; mostly strings, timpani, and trumpets), other than the obvious addition of the organ.

Barbara Hendricks is the vocal soloist in no. 7, while Carol Vaness (soprano), Doris Soffel (contralto), Keith Lewis (tenor), and Petteri Salomaa (bass) are the soloists for nos. 10 and 12, and Margaret Marshall (soprano), Carolyn Watkinson (contralto), and Robert Holl (bass) join Lewis on no. 12. Marriner, the great founder of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the first music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, leads the Dresdeners, their Leipzig colleagues, and this assembly of great vocalists through some of the greatest sacred music ever written. This 2-CD set is strongly recommended for any classical fan, especially if choral and/or sacred music is their favorite classical genre.

Neville Marriner has been criticised for his fast tempi but I think his conducting of these four Haydn masses is very good indeed. It has great energy and sense of purpose. The singing is also very good here. I especially like Robert Holl's solid and full basso in the Nelson Mass. You can pay a lot more and get a lot less.

Broad and solid.......2000-09-21

One of my first experiences with classical music concerts was a performance of Haydn's "Creation" conducted by Neville Marriner. From this concert I had the impression that Marriner has a faible for rather fast tempi - as far as classical choral works are concerned, but I have to revise this opinion.

Sure, in this collection of four masses by Haydn there are also some speedy movements, and often the interpretation feels "right" concerning the speed and rhythm. I have the impression that this is especially valid for the first two featured masses (Heiligmesse, Nelsonmesse) where I have no comparison to other recordings or notes. The second pair of masses (Kleine Orgelsolomesse, Theresienmesse) are played often in very broad tempi (e.g. the Kyrie in the Orgelsolomesse) that make it sometimes difficult to follow the flow of the music.

Besides these details, the interpretation of the joint forces of the Rundfunkchor Leipzig (pronouncing the Latin text in the way it is customary in Germany), the Staatskapelle Dresden, and various soloists is full of rhythm and is "leggiero" (sometimes the latter is somewhat missing with the soloists). Also the technical aspects of the recording are solid, though maybe not excellent.
