4 out of 5 stars Hartman.......2007-02-28

The real reason to get this cd and the follow up cd is to get the tracks of Johnny Hartman. I've also been trying to find tracks w/ the underrated guitarist Al Gafa; he backs Hartman on some of these tracks -- a real find. Any jazz junkie should attempt to score these two cds.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Hartman - the gold in the dross.......2007-02-26

The best thing about Clint Eastwood's 1995 tearjerker, "The Bridges of Madison County," is the soundtrack. Although most of the album (other than Eastwood's syrupy "Doe Eyes" which appears twice on the disk) is listenable, it's the recordings of Johnny Hartman that make this disk indispensable. Hartman, who has to be considered on the short list of the greatest male vocalists of all time, recorded the material heard here for the now out-of-print album, "Once in Every Life," on the Bee Hive label in 1980, three years before his untimely death at age 60. The album, a late masterpiece surpassed only by his 1963 collaboration with John Coltrane, has never been released on CD but Eastwood has done us all a huge service by releasing the entire content of the album spread out over two disks (this one and its sequel "Remembering Madison County"). Hartman's voice, a smoky baritone, is perfectly suited to the mature romantic ballads he performs here with a very complementary sextet. Hartman recorded some of the tracks, notably "I See Your Face Before Me," earlier in the mid 50s also. On the soundtrack he sings the song at a slower tempo, shading it with nuances earned over the many years he had lived with the lyrics. His renditions of the aforementioned song, "It Was Almost Like a Song" and "For All We Know" may well be the definitive versions.

This is an essential purchase for anyone who loves male jazz vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you back to a special time and place.......2007-01-10

This CD is filled with many warm memories of a great movie and a great time. There are no weaknesses in this collection of songs;just pure pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Bridges of Madison County.......2006-08-24

My husband and I have watched this movie over and over and we have listen to the music driving along and I'll turn to him and say "RRRRObert....you wanna F_ _ _ on the linoleum one more time" We just laugh..If you seen the movie as much as we have you will understand. Great cd. It definatly sets a mood you cannot, nor ,want to escape. Pour a brandy, sit close and the music will do the rest.

5 out of 5 stars all time favourite album - but put it in the vault !.......2006-01-25

I bought this album after seeing the movie( what 10 yrs ago?) We were only 30 at the time and still listening to Inxs and George Michael etc... so had never even heard of Johnny Hartman!!) Well 10 years and 3 kids later we are completely addicted to this album. My husband knows that if this is on when he gets home it will be in a very nice evening indeed.About two years ago we lost this cd - probably on a weekend away - and spent another year trying to replace it. There wasnt a single music store in Australia that had a new or second hand copy in stock. Where did they all go ?? I ended up ordering it from the U.K. - it took 3 months and cost $30 ( approx $50 us). Needless to say we have several copies of it now and continue to play it constantly. We now own various Hartman/Washington albums but the mix on this album ( plus we are big fans of Clint's) just seems to be perfect. Sublime.

5 out of 5 stars A back to the garden, laid back beauty..........2006-12-13

This was a favorite album for many "hippies" in the early 70's. Still basking in the idealistic, post Woodstock belief that simplifying life can solve all of man's problems, Arlo released this album of uplifting, well played, almost spiritual songs. Listen to this album a few times and you'll be scanning the real-estate ads for some country acreage. This is a feel good album that was released during a time of social turmoil. It was a salve for the spirit at the time and even now soothes the nerves and offers simple rest and some cool shade. Just looking at the album makes me want to grab my overalls and hoe and head for the country. Great memories of a way of life that promised escape from what was perceived as a corrupt, materialistic society. Too bad the majority of the people of that time now live the same lives they rebelled against 35 years ago. Want a break from the complexities of life? Next sunny day, grab this CD; jump in the car; and take a drive in the country.

5 out of 5 stars razor sharp.......2005-11-16

1970's 'Washington County' is easily Arlo Guthrie's finest collection of songs, and so exists as one of the finest albums in one of the most accomplished years of rock and roll history. In the same year Rod Stewart released 'Gasoline Alley', Neil Young, 'After the Goldrush' (at number 18 this was Rolling Stone Magazine's highest rated album of 1970 in their Top 200 albums of the 1970's; 'Washington County' doesn't make the list), and Tim Buckley, 'Starsailor'. But for my money none of these fine works approximates what Arlo Guthrie accomplished on 'Washington County'.

Arlo Guthrie has always been something of a spiritual explorer, and on this release, it seems Christianity was on Arlo's mind, in his heart, and just a bit on his sleeve. Several songs feature direct, intimate allusions to a faith awakening, including 'Gabriel Mother's Highway Ballad #16 Blues' ("Come on children, all come home, Jesus gonna make you well"), 'Valley To Pray' ("I went down to the valley to pray, learnin' about the good old way", and "who will wear the starry crown, Oh, Lord, show me the way"), and on 'I Could Be Singing' ("You and your friends have a party, Welcome your heavenly Dad"). That last song also stands as the strongest protest song on the disc, illustrating how the Guthrie tradition continued to meld morality and social consciousness. The lyrics swipe at Spiro Agnew, the '68 police riots in Chicago, and the shootings at Kent State (which took place only months prior to the recording of 'Washington County'). Despite the drab storyline, 'I Could Be Singing' chimes with an upbeat tempo and melody, as do many of the other tracks Arlo offers. Similarly, 'Percy's Song' (written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1963, but not released until his 'Biograph' box set appeared in 1985) begins with the lyric "Sad news, sad news..." and proceeds to tell a tale of judicial injustice, yet with a light and airy acoustic atmosphere. The only songs even hinting at 'the blues' are the eighth track, the yearning 'If You Would Just Drop By', and Arlo's cover of his father's 'Lay Down Little Doggies', which comes off warm and tender until, in the final verse, we find the 'doggies' are cattle being carted to the stockyards. Again, despite the sad conclusion, one cannot help but to crack a wry smile.

The first seven songs on 'Washington County' will whisk you off to a country and folk dreamland. 'Introduction' caresses us with a promise, "Come closer to me babe, and hear what I say, lay down beside me, listen to my song, it's something other than it's right or it's wrong", before blending into 'Fence Post Blues', carrying a guarantee of "Stand on the good land, children, you know it won't do you in". Of the seven tracks, only the slick and jumping, banjo driven instrumental title track has not yet been mentioned. The album concludes with 'I Want To Be Around', another upbeat track emulating the 'love and peace' values the era idealized with lyrics like "I want to be around, when the stars fall on the ground, walking hand in hand with everyman, sleeping in the sun with everyone". Appropriately, the cover photograph shows Arlo hand sharpening an axe. It was razor sharp by the time he was ready to cut each of these tunes.

'Washington County' was remastered in 2004 and reissued on Arlo's own label in 2005, so there has been ample opportunity to pad the 10 original vinyl tracks with live or alternate takes, or perhaps an unreleased recording from the 'Washington County' sessions. Unfortunately that hasn't happened. Nevertheless, the disc is nothing less than a gift from above (thank God, because it includes printed lyrics), with Arlo and friends (including Hoyt Axton, Clarence White, and Ry Cooder) lovingly tracing out these special compositions. It truly represents the epitome of folk and country rock from an era not easily forgotten. I don't hand out five stars easily, but this is an easy call.

5 out of 5 stars A Priceless Gem.......2005-11-09

Heard this album so long ago and I played it out. "Down in the Valley to Pray"-- you have to feel good after you listen. "Gabriel's Fence Post Blues" is an incredibly complicated guitar accompaniment that Arlo plays effortlessly-- the lyrics are some of the most moving I've ever heard. And "I'll see you in a tin can when you get shipped around"-- his goodbye to the dogies-- is priceless. If you happen to find your way to this CD, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure for the ears & mind.......2005-11-01

I was 11 years old when my older sisters boyfriend brought this shiny and new from the record store. I remember listening to it and thinking that it was really cool. The title track, "Washington County" is a smoking hot bluegrass instrumental that you can't help tapping your feet and any other loose appendedge to.

From the roots of his father, Arlo Gutherie has been aming increadably timeless music, this was released over 35 years ago and it still is relevent and speaks to the concious human inside you.

The words of the music on this record still echo in my mind. They provoke thoughts about who we are as a people, who I am as an individual.

Get it, listen to it, enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars From hippie to responsible adult this has stood the test of time!.......2005-10-14

I first heard this album when I was a hippie. Now that I'm a responsible adult I get up and make coffee instead of rolling something in paper. But, somehow this is still in my music player some 30 to 40 years latter. I probly bought it 3 or 4 times over the years as it was lost, stolen, and went from LP to 8-track to CD. It is an astonishing record - deep, melodic, intelligent and oh so pretty. For anyone who enjoys Dylan, or Sheryl Crow, or anyone in between, the lyrics are profound, the instrumentation complex and powerful, the joy unavoidable.

4 out of 5 stars humming in the country.......2004-06-25

My uncle Curtis loves this album. He actually has it on a record and not on a cd, but he is always telling my sister to buy it for him on cd for Christmas. My uncle Curtis is sort of lost in another time and place and he doesn't understand the music of today at all. He always yells at my sister for listening to Limp Bizcuit. He's like: come on Caitlyn I don't have the patience for this stuff. So on Sunday when we sleep over at his house and he makes us breakfast at 11:00 in his blue bathrobe we listen to Arlo Gutherie. He cooks us scrambled eggs and his kitchen is pitch black because he has tin foil covering the windows. He also has a lamp that hangs down too low from the ceiling and sometimes he is dancing around the room with his frying pan and he slams his head into this lamp. He did it the other day and he just stood there with this look on his face like he just swallowed a lemon. My sister put ice cubes in a paper towel and put it on his head for him but it didn't help. He doesn't make sense. My mom tells him he needs to stop smoking and stop drinking, but he says that he started that in the 70's and he can't stop. In fact, he says that Arlo Gutherie is one of his biggest inspirations. He says that Arlo lives in a church and drives a mini-bus. But even though my uncle Curist is always getting in trouble I still think he is really cool. I feel bad for him because he is the black sheep of the family and they always forget to invite him to the family gatherings, like weddings. But when my older sister Megan got married he got into a little trouble at the wedding. It was sort of like the Wedding Singer. My uncle didn't like the music they were playing at the wedding so he went out to his van and brought in a box of these old records that he had. He somehow forced the DJ to play "Everybody Must Get S&@!$%" by Bob Dylan. It was really embarrassing and my uncle sat in an empty room next to the kitchen for most of the night with a watermelon stain on his tie. He had too much champagne and demanded later in the evening when everyone was dancing to hear "Gloria" at full volume. The DJ didn't have that one, so my uncle was like "here...I have it." The DJ put on the old record reluctantly and it just skipped all the way through the song and my uncle danced around the square with my 8 year old cousin who looked totally horrified through the whole thing. I thought it was funny, but not the rest of the family. Then my uncle gave the bride and groom some advise which I later heard he told Damon not to ever try and hit him up for money because he thought Megan was marrying too young and should have finished school first. And then after the wedding he forgot that he left his records at the school and he almost got arrested trying to "find an easy way in through the back door." He was telling the security guard that he was a teacher and was just picking up some supplies. But of course the guard was smart enough to know better. But he got his records back and he is happy because Arlo Gutherie is his favorite singer and even though his record is completely trashed he will still play it over and over again. He keeps promising that one day he is going to move to the country and have a "great big porch" and a barbeque. My uncle Lester was like "we'll never be that lucky." But uncle Curtis is a swell old guy and he cracks me up when we listen to records because he plays along with a kazoo and he can't even hum in tune. The cat jumped up on the kitchen table and then he jumped over to the counter and almost landed on the stove. The sound of the kazoo make the cat go wild. And we start laughing and my uncle gets all serious and says "don't let the cat go out the door- he'll never come back." Ho-hum, that's life in our family, I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music value, real Arlo stuff.......2002-03-01

This is an excellent cd that allows you to travel back a bit with Arlo to his earlier years. If you've ever seen Arlo live you've not heard many of these songs... he usually does newer stuff, but this is not to be passed up. My 9 year old son, my 50 year old brother and myself, listen to this. Great music to talk about, great music to cry to, great music to laught to, just plan great music!

Maria

4 out of 5 stars A Country/Folk/Rock Classic.......2001-11-15

If your familiarity of Arlo begins and ends with "Alice's Restaurant," drop a dime and check this out.

Splendid musicianship, timeless lyrics and Arlo's expressive voice take you to the woods and backroads of America. Having passed through Arlo's stomping grounds in rural upstate Massachusetts, I can see how his surroundings inform his music. I consider this a wonderful "autumn" album. Warm and welcoming, like coming home.

If your taste leans toward the "Oh, Brother..." sound and musicians like Gillian Welch, as well as Wilco and Billy Bragg's dabblings with the music of Arlo's father, Woody Guthrie, you'll probably enjoy this. Pair it up with Arlo's "Hobo's Lullaby" and you've got a great two-fer.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2000-05-06

I first heard this album when a hippie student of my mom's gave it to me close to thirty years ago. It is an astonishing record - deep, melodic, intelligent and oh so pretty. For anyone who enjoys Dylan, or Sheryl Crow, or anyone in between, the lyrics are profound, the instrumentation complex and powerful, the joy unavoidable.

4 out of 5 stars Good ole' music........1999-06-10

This is one of my favorites. In fact Arlo was even kind enough to sign my copy of it last April. There's nothing like listening to the first tracks, Introduction and Fencepost Blues. Its just like a Thanksgiving dinner that can't be beat. It's very moving. The album shows a wide variety of what Arlo does. From the very reflective and beautiful Gabriel's Mothers's Highway Ballad #16 Blues and If You Would Just Drop By, to the up-beat I Want To Be Around and I Could Be Singing, its just a great CD. Not to mention the title track, Washington County, another brilliant instrumental that fans have come to expect from Arlo.
