The album starts with a low growl, building into the menace that becomes "Tass'on Nainen," and you're into the world of Hedningarna, where traditional Swedish instrumentation (and the vocals of Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto) meet studio electronics. As dark as anything produced by a goth band, it's a startling record that's pushed the Nordic sound to world music's cutting edge. The fiddles distort evilly; programmed beats blend with a frame drum. While Hedningarna mine territory that other Swedish bands such as Garmarna do, the sound on this record is their own, full and wild and a studio creation that never sounds overproduced. When the guitar cuts loose at the end of "SaglaTen," it becomes obvious that this is really the new and glorious sound of folk-rock, '90s style. The guest joiking by Wimme on "Tuuli" only serves to make the album even more otherworldly, but a passport isn't required. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2006-12-28

I bought this because I've heard the song Raven before, but the whole CD is just amazing. In fact, Raven is now one of my least liked songs on the CD, originally being on of my favorite songs ever. This music is definitely original. It reminds me of Celtic music bagpipes and such.

5 out of 5 stars Raw, Animalistic, and Addictive.......2006-03-06

I used to hate this type of music. Having been "brought up" by classical music, rock, and comtemporary film scores-I didn't consider these droning chants to be music at all-since I am more used to more melodious and polyphonic musical forms. My interest in folk started with Irish music, from which a love of drums and mouth music was born. While Irish music is powerful, for the most part it is very fair, calming and at times exuberant. The music of Scandinavia is pure power, raw, animalistic, and illicts the part that is most primal in all of us. It isn't exactly what you'd call a "pleasant listen." This is not for everyone and I usually don't listen to it around family for fear of getting kicked out of the house :) but it is very rousing and the beat and rhythm...like certain African or Native American soundscapes...gives you an interesting drive...like you could conquer all...not a safe thing to listen to if you hate someone...haha...I say this because certain tracks really resonates with emotions that associate with anger...but in a way, it helps you to let it out...

4 out of 5 stars Trä -- Quirky, Wild, and Addictive.......2005-05-22

The 3rd album by Hedningarna, Trä, became their most celebrated and most popular. It features an all out vocal assault from not only the two Finnish singers (Sanna and Tellu) but also by the men as well on Min Skog, Räven, and VargTimmen. Instrumentally, the band combines their unique Scandinavian folk sound with modern rock production and instrumentation.
While the album does contain some of the band's strongest (and most lovingly bizarre) material -- Tuuli, Räven, Täss'on Nainen, and Tina Vieri to name a few -- some of the tunes don't really quite catch fire. It was certainly a groundbreaking album but I don't believe it is their best; Karelia Visa accomplishes that in a more sublime, mature way.
But this album still delivers the heathen roots/rock that makes this group so wonderful -- its a quirky, wild and addictive ride. Certainly worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, deep, yet manages to be uplifting.......2004-03-28

Like the English folk singers of the 1970s, Scandanavia's Hedningarna managed during the 1990s to combine a truly modern aesthetic with the most traditional values evident in their own folk tradition.

Because the folk traditions of Scandanavia are based on the use of wind instruments rather than stringed ones, the sound here is quite different from Fairport Convention or Anne Briggs' a capella folk. Hedningarna managed through their application of modern techniques to the most tradional of Scandanavian folk instruments to produce something that sounded and sounds quite otherworldly. The pipes on the opener "Tässi On Nainen" are so dark and droning that the haunting, serious vocal melody becomes uplifting, whlst the dense rhythms of the following "Min Skog" thrust themselves so far upfront that it sounds like it's played in two eras at once - literally. The angry male vocals sound quite like an aggressive preacher: the effect is so emotional as to be memorable even when a listener cannot understand what is being said.

"Pornopolka" featured the strange yet amazingly heartfelt and rapid-fire rhythms typical of the Finnish language - resulting from its characteristic vowel harmony, and also characteristic of Värttinä's "Katariina" - together with an incredibly strange fiddle melody. The amazing melody of the language allows them to achieve a volume unimaginable in most of the world's languages. "Såglåten", on the other hand, featured a melodic yet fitting guitar break that added to the fire of the melodies, whilst "Räven" was so eerie, intimate and unrestrained that it would touch any listener unconsciously.

The last three tracks were even more eccentric. The soft "Tuuli" featured the hypnotic vocals of Wimme Saari over a groove so hypnotic it was danceable; "Täppmarschen", despite the emphasis on the pipes, sounds more like what we would call "folk" than anything, yet winds by its astonishing intimacy even to someone unfamiliar with the language. And "Tina Vieri" sounded almost accessible in its verses yet the melody of the language makes it so surprising that Sanna Kuori-Suoni and Taulu Paulasto can put off such a dark and beautiful piece: the stringed lutes sound like a piano.

In their amazing manipulation of traditional sounds to produce something new, Hedningarna were quite unlike anything most of you would have heard. Hard to understand, but few record will get under one's skin so quickly.

5 out of 5 stars This glows of Nordic darkness........2003-10-07

Wolves, foxes and hill-dwelling humans are regulars in Scandinavian story-telling, along with the dark woods in which they inhabit. And this, as with much Nordic mythology and literature, is not a distant reflective experience.Rather, the pretty wilderness is coloured with close-ups of violence- the wolf's teeth, the torn flesh, the vengeful humanity.
The women sing witchily, but in tune, except for some deliberate moments of vocal gymnastics. For example, you'll catch them panting like tiring animals. And despite their singing being in Finnish tongue, the music's overall feel is more notably Swedish. And though the Swedish men sing on a couple of tracks (and howl like wolves, successfully enough), their expertise lay in the pin-point accuracy of their instrumental pursuits. They innovatively pulse electricity into their traditional instruments.Bagpipes, hurdygurdies, zithers and primitive drums are already quite course even without such treatment. The modern drums on the album are used tactfully, as are most studio embelishements.Though, I think their electric guitar usage was better left absent. The skin of this music is modern, but the skeleton is ancient.Upbeat and downbeat tunes share the load. This art is quite aggressive, but always poetic and tuneful. The female singers bring in such sensitivity, considering the lyrical content. The themes are set in nature, with assorted creatures.Humans are often involved thru their spells and evils.'Lust' is a recurrent sin here. But Hedningarna address such things with respect and good judgement.Only rarely is there a semblance of gratuity.
Warning to teddy bears! If you're going out in the woods today to have your picnic ...don't choose these woods!

      Album Description

Trae gained a name on the Houston Rap scene when he was 1st featured on his cousin Z-Ro's album Look What You Did To Me. Since then he has been one of the hottest artists in the streets. Despite the interest from other labels that "Swang" generated, Trae decided to join Z-Ro on Rap A Lot Records, and is ready to bring one of the best albums to be released in a while." With features from Paul Wall, Bun B, Jim Jones, Three 6 Mafia, Mya, and his cousin Z-Ro, Restless is sure to be another hit.

      5 out of 5 stars Tight album.......2007-06-27

To the guy who says this is Z-Ro's flow, dude, they're friends and they rap alike. So what? They came up together, nobody stole nobody's flow. Trae is amazing, get over it. This album is tiiight. 5/5 Stars.

      1 out of 5 stars Trae sucks.......2007-05-11

Tight beats good production and concept, sorry lyrics and wierd flow, defintely sucks using zeros flow only zero can flow like that, Trae really needs to give it up and get a job

5 out of 5 stars One listen is all that is needed........2007-05-10

Trae is dope. While most people that look at the Houston rap scene merely see Mike Jones and Paul Wall flossing on the outside, few of them look beneath the surface, and dig underground to find some of hip-hop's most compelling artists. Cats like Z-Ro and K-Rino have long been known as two of Houston's best kept secrets, but perhaps surprassing them is the former's cousin, Trae. In terms of voice and cadence, there is actually very little difference between both Z-Ro and Trae; Trae's voice is slightly deeper than Z-Ro's Barry White-smooth delivery. What puts Trae on a slightly higher scale than Z-Ro, in my opionion, is the fact that Trae is able to cater to both types of hip-hop fans; the ones who make up the core of Z-Ro's fanbase, and focus on pure lyricism, and the ones who buy Dro and Joc albums based off of beats alone. Trae's introspective cuts are amazing; some of the most entrancing stories you'll hear from any emcee. He also serves up a number of bangers that'll have your trunk rattling from side to side.

Armed with stellar production, and an amazing sense of rhythm, Trae comes into this release with a melancholic intro that sets the tone for the majority of the album. Real Talk is an amazing track featuring Trae getting his Bone Thugs on, showing that the South isn't nearly as slow as their detractors believe; in fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone outside of the Mid-west spitting as fast as Trae does on this track. Meanwhile, one of the three singles from the album, In The Hood, is up next; featuring a beat similar to that of Joc's It's Goin' Down, Yung Joc and Big Pokey both guest on this track. While most maybe turned off by Joc's guest appearance, he manages to hold his own with the two Houston veterans, and In The Hood only boosts the expectations for the rest of this album.

Those expectations are continuously met throughout. With absolutely nothing falling under skip category, Trae gets So Gangsta with Bun B, before becoming Restless as he hooks up with the Outlawz' own Young Noble. There are many guest appearances found throughout the album, yet none of them are capable of taking the spotlight from Trae; he manages to shine on each and every track, no matter how talented his guest is, as he rightfully should; this is his show, after all. Featuring a diverse cast that ranges from UGK(on seperate tracks) and Three Six Mafia to Paul Wall and Jim Jones, Trae uses each guest spot effectively, bringing out the best in each of them, and amplifying the quality of this release.

Trae's Restless is a rare breed of album; one that can be banged in the whip, and in the headphones, equally effective in both scenarios. Trae's diverse nature as an artist is one rarely seen by underground emcees, and it's amazingly shocking to think that Trae still hasn't blow up as significantly as he should. It can be argued that Rap-A-Lot doesn't know how to promote artists properly(just look at Devin The Dude's new release), but it'd be worthless to blame anyone on Trae's obscurity; whether he stays a cult favorite or not is of no importance. What is important is that Trae was able to release one of the best hip-hop albums in recent memory, providing a release that is sure to only grow better with age. Support Trae, and purchase Restless.

4 out of 5 stars Nice album from Trae - possibly 4.5 stars.......2007-01-20

I've heard Trae on a lot of Z-Ro's works (they're cousins) so I decided to check out this album and it's a good one. Eerily sounding almost exactly Like Z-Ro, I had to remind myself it was Trae not Z-Ro I was hearing. Like Z-Ro, he has a deep voice and tells some good stories and has deeper songs and slides into rapping very dast and even singing at times (not quite as good as Ro does). With 16 songs, you get 1 almost classic, 1 I skip, 4 ok songs, and the otehr 10 are good. Guests are heavy, on 11 of the 16 songs, (rapping on 9 and doing the hook on 2). Production is pretty good as well. Q-Stone does 8 songs, Scott Novelli does 2 songs, Mr. Lee, Mike Dean, Johnnie Jones, Young Chill, Bigg Tyme, Dom all do 1 song. a nice album for southern rap fans to have.

#2 - 8.5 (nice beat and Trae rappin REAL fast)
      #3 - 5.5 (f/ Young Joc -- why he has him on the album I don't know)
      #4 - 7 (f/ Lil Keke)
      #5 - 8.5 (f/ Bun B)
      #6 - 9 (f/ Young Noble -- deeper song)
      #7 - 9.5 (f/ Shyna & Dallas -- another deeper song)
      #8 - 8.5 (a dedication to his homeboyz)
      #9 - 9 (f/ Billy CooK)
      #10 - 9 (f/ Hawk {R.I.P.} & Pimp C -- nice beat)
      #11 - 7 (sings for the first 2 mins. -- nice beat)
      #12 - 8 (f/ Three-6 Mafia, Lil Boss, Paul Wall, Jayton -- about Cadillac's)
      #13 - 8 (f/ Z-Ro -- nice relaxing beat)

        5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2006-06-26

This album show's that their's still rappers out their with love for the music not the money. Trae isnt the greatest rapper out their but the way he makes his albums & the way he does it with a passion for music, that alone makes him better then alot of the greats who really never droped a classic album. This is his sophmore album & he comes just as good or maybe even better then "loosing composure". Other then BunB all his features are diffrent from his last album, wich is also good cause he had really good one's on this one. Trae seem's to be really picky with his albums from the production to the features down to the artwork wich is probaly why he will never dissapoint his fans. At the end of this album Trae just left me craving for more & more of his music, now im just going crazy for his upcoming album "restless", can't wait. pick this album up its a must for all gangsta hip-hop heads out their. it's a hood classic!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pick this up!.......2006-05-30

This album from Trae is as good as it gets! The album kicks off with a great intoduction which is a piano instrumental. Almost every song on this album is filled with amazing lyrics from Trae as well as his guest appearances which include Bun B, Jay'ton, Billy Cook, Z-Ro, and others. My only complaint about this album is that the DVD does not work with any of my players!
