Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This modest live album offers a rare glimpse of a truly great Southern singer-songwriter, but it may frustrate fans as much as it intrigues listeners unfamiliar with his work. At his best, Jesse Winchester weaves gospel, folk, blues, and country threads into graceful, intelligent music that reflects his origins in Louisiana, rural Mississippi, and Memphis. He sings in a honeyed drawl about affairs of the heart, small moments of deep feeling, and mysteries of the spirit with a rare balance of clarity and gravity. This set captures Winchester accompanied only by his spare gut-string acoustic guitar, a setting that emphasizes song craft but eclipses his skill at solid ensemble arrangements. The repertoire favors Winchester's more recent output while overlooking or underselling his earlier songs, thus reducing exquisite signatures like "Brand-New Tennessee Waltz" and "Yankee Lady" to pale echoes of their original power and depicting their author as a folk poet instead of the versatile musician his past albums and infrequent tours have revealed. --Sam Sutherland

Purity Of Vision.......2005-06-23
What is it about Jesse Wincheaster's impeccable charm that is so infectious, so uplifting? The simplicity of the writing and the purity of his diction mask a remarkably deft and economic touch which elevates the subtle shifts of desire and loss in relationship to the level of hymn. That's a special reason for supporting his live recording as the voice in this concert is as free to do its work as it is ever likely to be on CD. It vividly recalls the small houses he played to at the Troubadour, Melbourne during the 70s. Though I like some of the brooding work of his early years, such as,'Black Dog', that appears to be buried. The show features some of his classics. Though I doubt his repetoir could fatigue, there are few songs from the 70s when he forged an audience. Importantly, the set concludes with one of them,'Yankee Lady',which serves 30 years on as a double tribute to the Southern roots which have informed his career. Remarkably, in interview some years ago, he admitted to not liking the sound of his recorded voice. While that characteristic self-depreciation often stalks the narrator of his songs, its an opinion few people would share. Certainly not Bob Dylan, who Jesse recalled in that interview as having once met and congratulated him on,'Yankee Lady' and somewhat whelmed over, he replied that he admired Bob's 'Sad Eyed Lady'. There you go.
Like Having Him Play in Your Home.......2004-03-12
I've seen Jesse play solo numerous times in small venues going back to 1975 in Montreal. This recording is just how it is. His sweet understated vocals and minimalist guitar playing just captivate and keep you focused on his every word. If you're a fan but never got to see him in a small club, buy this CD and you'll know exactly what its like. If you never heard of him, buy his studio albums first and then give this a try.
The Heart of Music.......2004-01-13
Jesse has been a part of my life since the early 70's. I bought his first album based on a story in Rolling Stone and immediately became a big fan! For all of these years I have played and sung "Brand New Tennessee Waltz", Defying Gravity and Biloxi. Inevitably when I sing them for someone who hasn't heard them before, they comment on how good the song is and ask if I wrote it. I reluctantly fess up that it is Jesse's and of course they have never heard of him. What a shame that some of the greatest artists never receive the recognition that they deserve.
This album is what music is all about. Great melodic songs and great lyrics with nothing else to get in the way. Yes, I liked his studio stuff with a band also but this just gets in your body and mind in a way that those didn't. The only negative is that it should have been a two CD recording with more of the songs from his first three albums, which I feel are his best.
Simple, understated, extremely powerful.......2003-01-11
I've been a Jesse Winchester fan since his first self-titled (vinyl) album many years ago. I've seen him live a few times. But it wasn't until Strawberry Music festival a couple of years ago that I saw him perform solo. I was curious how he would hold the audience, many of whom hadn't even heard of him. It was almost beyond understanding, how he had the entire crowd hanging on every word, laughing at the most subtle suggestion of humor. This disc re-creates that connection, a rare and magical one that few artists, in the over-produced and synthetically altered musical machine of today can understand, let alone approximate. A great gift to the musical world!

uninspiring compilation.......2000-06-21
It's a compliation, which likely means you will enjoy some cuts and not others. The ride from one artist to the next is not perfectly smooth; the artists are varied and there's too little of each one to fully engage the listener -- just when you start getting into one style, one voice, you're shifted to something quite different.
Any music aficionado would be better off listening to a full CD by each artist. The individual pieces here are merely okay, and I say that even about the ones by artists I really like. A few cuts are entirely forgettable, and the good ones can be had just as good or better on other CDs.
Overall there's more slow and melancholy than upbeat and happy on this CD.

The clown prince of old-time returns with this engaging live set that collects performances from three mid-'90s appearances on the West Virginia-based radio program. Clown, we say, because Hartford is so adept at being humorous and wistful simultaneously. And because he never takes himself too seriously, but never (OK, rarely) lapses into silliness. Filled with Hartford's distinctive banjo and fiddle work and an assortment of classic original material, the set serves as an accessible introduction to one of folk music's most unique and idiosyncratic characters. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Hartford is at his best when live..........2000-08-22
This CD is a good introduction to John Hartford if you are not familiar with his work. Hartford has a twangy, off beat style that is sometimes silly and other times poignant. This collection includes some of his better known works and showcases Hartford's flexibility as a musician.
I wouldn't select it as a favorite, because I like Hartford's quirky songs the best, and this collection tends to lean toward the traditional side of things. Hartford seems to get a kick out of playing for folks, and that side of him comes across well in his live recordings. He's interesting to watch on stage because you never can guess what he's thinking...hard to figure. Sometimes he comes across as remote, but then it turns out that he's really witty and having a lot of fun with things in his own way.
If you like bluegrass or folk music, I'd definitely recommend all of his works. As famous as he is in some circles, Hartford often gets missed by more mainstream folks....what a shame!
More than an entertainer.......2000-05-23
John Hartford doesn't need a passport. This late album is maybe the best one along his honourable career. It makes him more than an entertainer, more than a clown: he enters the Hall of Fame as a whole musician.

My favorite in the series.......2001-04-26
What more can I say, this is my favorite release in the Mountain Stage series. FRom the opening song, "Alright Guy", a song drenched in as much humor as cynicism, to Wilco's trimmed down acoustic rendition of "I Must Be High", this cd release is the tighest selection and mix in the series to date. Other highlights include "Welfare Music", and of course Souther Culture drops in with another song about food. From start to finish, not a clunker is found on this disc.

Enjoyable .......2006-02-02
I liked this album myself. My favorite tracks being Gillian Welch's In Tall Buildings and Tim O'Brien;s More Love. This really isn't a John Hartford album, but rather a tribute to him There are a few great numbers by him however that are wonderful and amusing in a dark humor sort of way.
A heartfelt tribute...............but a mediocre album.......2001-12-27
I've loved John Hartford's music for years, and was very happy that a tribute had taken place and was preserved for posterity. But I found the disc that resulted disappointing. The breadth and depth of Hartford's music calls for a towering tribute. Unfortunately, this isn't it.
There are some bright spots .... Riders in the Sky doing "Billy the Kid," Gillian Welch's wonderful rendition of "In Tall Buildings," and, of course, the pieces Hartford does with his string band (especially "Watching the River Go By").
But the great parts are weighed down with, for example, John Cowan's overwrought "Dark as a Dungeon" and the Jamie Hartford Band's run-of-the mill country rock -- pleasant, but nothing to write home about.
I'm glad I got this album -- it rounds out my collection, and Hartford's "goodbye" on the last track is priceless. But this one is for fanatics like me only. For a better introduction to his later music, try "Live at College Station, Pennsylvania" or "Good Old Boys."
Goodbye John...........2001-07-29
I'm a huge fan of John Hartford's and have been since I saw him live in Austin many, many years ago. Those who gathered together to play John's music were better musicians than I, but not necessarily bigger fans! In any event, this is not the album to get as an introduction to John -- Aereo-Plain, Live on Mountain Stage or Good Old Boys are far better for that.
The performances are all wonderful here, but what comes through is the emotional energy that runs through it. John was dying of cancer - everybody knew it and he knew everybody knew it -- and his appearance on the final few songs is tough to get through. His fiddle wobbles here and there and his voice is touched by the medication and treatment he'd been through. For those of us who knew his voice, you can hear death's whisperings going on in there and it's disturbing to listen to. What saves it? The very last short speech and song that John gives.
This was recorded a full 9 months before his death, as I understand it, and I've given it a 3 because I want to stress this isn't an introduction, but an emotional experience that, when seen within the body of his work, shows what American music has lost.

Customer Reviews:
one of the best series goes on.......2001-04-26
Another strong entry from this series that keeps getting better and better with each year. Here are gems from Ani DiFranco, a rocker from Peter Droge, and the raspy overtones of Graham Parker's "Howling Wind". Stage releases always focus on diversity and the connection the artist has with a live audience. Add this one to your collection.

Radio Aircheck For Fans Only.......2006-01-27
First of all, the writer-reviewer who said that this CD is evidence that Laura "lost her talent" later in her career is very VERY WRONG.
Check out her final, impressive studio recordings on "Angel In the Dark" (recorded 1995) and the wonderful live, Bottom Line recordings from "The Loom's Desire" (recorded Christmas 1993 and 1994).
This "Live From Mountain Stage" CD is simply a live performance aircheck of a (I believe) public radio show that was done in 1990. Laura performs solo with an electric piano, never her best instrument (later in the 90s she returned to the rich sound of a real piano). The audience is strangely subdued, either unfamiliar with her music, or restrained by the format of the program. The result is a series of well performed songs, which find Laura in her usual beautiful voice, but the set sounds more like a collection of stripped-down demos performed as reference recordings. The leaden audience seems to dampen Laura's performance, and the magic so evident in her other live recordings (Season of Lights in the 70s, Live At The Bottom Line in the 80s, and The Loom's Desire in the 90s) is missing here.
If you are a real fan and want everything that this marvelous lady did, then buy it. Otherwise, if you want live Laura, stick with the previously mentioned live recordings.
Ok..So it isn't the best.......2001-03-29
I bought this cd to just have allll of Laura. By the way..I do have a copy of the Bottom Line Performance..was there when it was recorded..what an evening. This cd reminds me of some early performances I caught in the 70's..small venues like college auditoriums with just Laura...no band...and in those days a perfectly tuned Steinway that would inspire her really wail. I am listening to the music as I write and it has that wonderful intimate quality that Laura could create. How likely is it that someone would purchase this cd as their first Laura cd? Doubt it. But well worth a listen if you are a fan......
Radio to Remember.......2001-01-26
I found this CD to be a delight. It must be listened to in the context that it was a recorded for radio, just Laura, her keyboard, those incredible songs, and that voice that can touch the heavens with ecstasy or plunge to the shattering depths of despair in the blink of an eye. The version of "Let It Be Me/Christmas Song" particularly reads well in this intimate setting over the Acoustic Christmas CD recording. I also found some great nuances in "Lite a Flame." For Nyro fans, don't expect a new revelation with this recording, but enjoy sitting down in your living room and let Laura play live for you this one last time.
Aw C'mon It's Pretty Good!.......2000-12-30
I pretty much disagree with the negative sentiment of the reviewers for this disk. Is it Laura Nyro's best? No. But the flow of song to song is gentle. It's a great dinner lp. Light some candles and enjoy some intimacy. This disk will calm you and make you miss her.
Lost Her Talent.......2000-12-02
This CD is terrible. Listening to it makes me very sad because Nyro was one of the brightest talents around when she first started out. Stick with her early albums or her greatest hits. This album consists of poor remakes and lousy new songs which don't come close to her best.
