The best parts of Jill Sobule's self-titled second album capture a goofy cocktail nation groove worthy of Combustible Edison or Love Jones. The singer- songwriter's sparer efforts are less interesting, until you turn to the witty lyric sheet, which chronicles the secret lives of characters like Karen, the uptight boss at the shoe store, and Margaret, the bad girl at St. Mary's Catholic high school--Jim DeRogatis

Satirical Songs for those whom do and don't like to think.......2005-09-26
Good Satire and enjoyable beats but don't think the whole album is like the two super hits SUPERMODLE and I KISSE A GIRL.
So good.......2005-09-17
Jill Sobule has been on my radar since the early 90s. She is a wonderful story-song composer, wtih wit and grace filling every facet of her lyrics and music. She should be much better known.
She's gonna sing, you're gonna listen!.......2005-01-17
Jill Sobule is the singer/songwriter best(only) known for the semi-novelty song "I Kissed a Girl". This album contains that song plus 11 or 12 other songs she wrote or co-wrote. (The song "Supermodel" is a bonus track that was not on the original version of this album. It was from the "Clueless" soundtrack.) Jill is a quirky songwriter, with a very original style. Most of the songs here are humorous, although more "crack a smile" funny than "laugh out loud" funny. This is a very good album, which should appeal to fans of offbeat girl singer/songwriters.
Secret Genius.......2004-01-12
When this album first came out I used to listen to it in the car all the time, not really aware of who she was or how famous she was (not at all, it turns out). Then I didn't listen to it for ages, and a couple of years ago, when I finally got musical taste, I heard it again and thought - she's a genius. Fantastic, witty lyrics, melodic guitar and diverse song subjects (from political Romeo-and-Juliet style war stories to teenage dreams of stardom) mean this album is essential listening. Each tune is a little story, and Sobule has an original take on life that should keep you hooked. Look out for her other albums too.
Jill Sobule- best f'cking artist ever..........2002-01-15
The songs on this album are as musically diverse as it gets. From the sweet, sad ballads like "Houdini's Box" and "Vrbania Bridge" to the pop-punk "Supermodel", every song is another treasure that seems to be getting better with time. I've had this CD for about a month, and every time I listen to it, I find another secret Jill is telling me. Anyone who listens to female vocalists will love this CD, it's pure poetry.

A cross between Aimee Mann and Cyndi Lauper with sure melodic hooks and adult sensibilities, Sobule is quirky, vulnerable, and likeably human on tracks like "Bitter," "When My Ship Comes In," and on the buoyant, horn-driven title track. --Jeff Bateman

Awesome lyrics.......2006-11-26
This is great music, from a great singer/songwriter. She is quick witted and you can truly relate to her music. This cd is, in my opinion, her best. This cd should be in anyones collection,if they enjoy all genres of music.
Magnum Opus.......2005-05-04
If there's one CD that I'd call Jill Sobule's magnum opus, I'd say that it'd be Happy Town. There's so much good material here.
How did Jill Sobule enter in to my head...........2002-01-15
...And how long does she plan on staying there? Almost every song on this album seemed like it could have been written by me. That is, if I had the time/energy/talent to write the insightful lyrics that Jill has given to us this time. "Happy Town" is the story of my life after the Prozac (bleh), "Underacheiver" is what my day-to-day life has been since the fourth grade, "Soldiers of Christ" made me both laugh and cry, when I realised just how damn true it was for me. And even if you aren't me (you poor souls!) I'm sure you'll find Jill's lyrics amazing & true, and her music is always, seems to be coming straight from the soul.
Another success from Jill!.......2001-09-25
I became a fan of Jill after listening to her self titled album. A few months later, I bought this CD at a used music store. Jill has scored another winner! Her voice, lyrics, and music are so unique! Suspend disbelief and get this album!
TRITE AND OBVIOUS POP.......2000-05-07
This is a terrible album from the first song to the last. The lyrics are obvious and cutesy, appealing only to little girls raised on "Take your daughter to work days" and "Oprah". She has nothing to say and says it over the most insipid pop this side of Tori Amos. Will appeal only to Lilith Fair-fetishists.

Once Again, Todd Produces a Jewel (for Jill)!!.......2004-06-12
The Wizard, the True Star Todd Rundgren applies his producing wizardry to Jill Sobule, a slight-voiced folk singer in the Jewel mode. What he turns in is genius -- through sophisticated, overlaying vocals, swirly Eleanor Rigby production techniques, Todd takes these simple, spare songs and dresses them in a shiny, beautiful showcase. The results are heavenly, haunting, and memorable.
Apparently Sobule didn't care much for the production process here, and is still bitter her career has not taken off. Believe me, if anything Todd helped her turn in her best album by far -- forget the cutesy, average followup, Jill, or the weak Pink Pearl -- Jill's best work is her first work, and this one is it. Every song is a winner, each melody one you will not forget.
Like Todd did for XTC, he did here for Sobule -- molding something good into something great. This one is worth seeking out, you will not be disappointed!
...THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO FOR THEM IN EVIAN..........2004-06-07
Most people know what the town of EVIAN in France is famous for: its mineral water. Most people don't know, however, what the town of Evian is infamous for: the pre-WW II conference of world nations where Nazi Germany tried to solve its 'Jewish problem' by exiling its Jews to any country which would take them in. Most countries would take none. And the countries that would 'generously agreed' to take ridiculous numbers of Jews, 2 here, 5 there, etc.
And with this apathy, the Nazi's, rationally (as measured, at least, by their ultimate goal that is) decided that kicking the Jews out of Germany and Eastern Europe would not be a feasible option to get rid of them. Hence, the Nazis ultimately devised their Plan B--the 'final solution'. No country really wanted the Jews--as evidenced by the ill-fated Evian Conference--and thus the only practicable means to get rid of the Jews would be to kill them. The Wansee conference, implementing the 'final solution' and Auschwitz, etc. followed.
The song EVIAN, rolling gently like a tranquil love song, stands as a poignant accusation: Underneath the song's gentle ballad, juxtaposed in silence behind the song's quiet words of love and tenderness, Jill lays the infamy of Evian as the gateway through which the apathy of the world laid the foundation and made the conditions upon which Hitler carried out his final solution to the 'Jewish problem', the murder of the 6 milllion.
Behind these words Jill wrote, the reality of history still haunts us:
"She asked them what did they decide to do, to help them through..."
"...Let the water wash away these troubled times..."
"...THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO FOR THEM IN EVIAN...."
hmmm...........2000-11-05
While I love Jill Sobule, I have to say that this album does not express nearly as much passion and inspiration and inventiveness as her later albums.... Jill doesn't even acknowledge this album on her website, which has to say something about it. It sounds like mid-80s soft rock e-z listenin' stuff. Very synthetic and constructed.... but it was a first effort, a place to really find her feet, and she's absolutely breathtaking now.
Beautifully under produced.......2000-07-25
Although those who first heard Jill through "Jill Sobule" or "Happy Town" may not agree, this, her first set is in my opinion still the ultimate. Simple songs, with no over-played production and that pure insightful yet childlike voice. First came to my attention as sounding similat to Harriet Gavurin from the Sundays, this has been regularly on my CD player for several years. Buy and enjoy!
Best of the first 3.......2000-06-12
I have not heard the most recent release, but I can tell you that her first album is the best of her first three albums. I thought her self titled album was good as well, but the hit on that one "kissed a girl" is really over-rated. Her true first "hit" was on this first album, it's called "Too Cool to Fall in Love" and is really a great, great song. If you like the first two albums, I'd say stay away from "Happy Town" because it's very different in tone than the first two.

Like Aimee Mann, Jill Sobule had a hit early (1995's "I Kissed a Girl") and then was dropped by her major label. Now that the dust has settled, one can only hope that, like Mann, Sobule will reap the artistic and commercial recognition she deserves. Though no slouch in the melody department, Sobule really shines as a deft lyricist. On songs that act as many self-contained vignettes, she captures life's little miseries and epiphanies with economy and understated humor. Though she isn't afraid to tackle wide topics ("Heroes" reveals our icons' feet of clay with lines such as "Heard Babe Ruth was full of malice / Lewis Carroll I'm sure did Alice"), Sobule's specialty is to focus on individuals in a way that's both sharp-witted and compassionate. In the end, Pink Pearl's greatest accomplishment is showing that there are as many good song subjects as there are people around us--you only need to pay attention. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Clever and Cute.......2006-05-23
JS has a very pretty if rather small voice. Her lyrics are smart and different. Songs are catchy. I'm surprised none of the tracks from Pink Pearl were hits. She's a good singer-songwriter who deserves more recognition. Check her out.
great lyrics great melodies interesting voice.......2005-11-08
This album was a pleasant surprise. If you enjoy female vocalists and witty lyrics you'll like this. The songs have graceful melodies and are easy to listen to yet reward attention as well. Just like the review quoted on the site says, the lyrics really demonstrate that there are interesting things going on in even the most ordinary events...just as an example from "Rainy Day Parade":
I used to have the stars in my pockets
Now I just watch them on TV
My friends, they've all run away
But they'll come back again
And we'll have a celebration
Getting back on my medication
We'll have a rainy day parade
Other songs include "Lucy at the Gym" about a woman exercising to overcome self image problems, dying and going to heaven..."Mexican wrestler" about unrequited love..."Claire" about a friendship with a woman with Alzheimer's and secrets of that life that are lost to fading memories and ambiguity...
Great stuff - really enjoy the songs - too bad Amazon doesn't have samples foryou to listen to so you could see if you like it.
I would say that the closest performer that comes to mind is the duo of Kate and Anna McGarrigle.

Lousy!.......2005-05-03
I had to submit a review to counteract all the illegitimate fawning reviews. Her voice is totally annoying. More important, her tunes are just awful. The worst! People may think they like her but they are simply deluding themselves.
Jill at her best.......2003-10-30
You must buy this CD for the first and last tracks at least! But I loved nearly everything on the CD. Jill is the kind of artist I never tire of listening to. I can listen to all of these songs over and over and never get tired of them. What's up with the CD being out of stock? Ah well. If you want this CD, I suggest you hie over to www.jillsobule.com and buy it directly from her. Then buy all of her other CDs, they're amazing!
good stuff.......2002-12-18
Jill Sobule writes pop music with intelligence, heart, sarcasm and wit. In other words, she's just too good to ever be famous.
Still a great songwriter.......2002-05-30
Jill sobule has always been able to write wonderful songs. Little character sketches and plot twists, like a Borges or Roald Dahl short story in song form, pepper her albums. I'm really happy that while gaining backup musicians and studio production values, she hasn't sacrificed all the qualities that I liked in her previous efforts. The last album was headed out of the "girl-with-a-guitar" territory that she had done so well with her second album, but still hadn't quite left it. I admit I was pretty worried about where it would go, but it seems my fears were unfounded. A good album, and a great relief!
Starts with a bang, ends with a whimper.......2002-02-28
After hearing "One Of These Days" one time on the radio, I waited anxiously for this album to be released. I realized immediately that I was not a big Jill Sobule fan. Her talent is obvious, it's just not really my cup of tea. One Of These Days is really a terrific song...the lyrics made me literally laugh out loud, especially "one of these days/I'm going to touch the sky/like that awful song/'I believe I can fly.'" I identified with the lyrics especially since I hated that song, but most of the rest of the album left me cold...it was just a bit too quirky for me.

The Brian Woodbury Songbook is a collection of songs by the eclectic, eccentric (erstwhile TV-theme penning) songwriter. It features a host of singers, including Jill Sobule, Terre Roche of the Roches, David Yazbek (composer/lyricist of Broadway's The Full Monty) and Sean Altman of Rockapella. A concert version of this project featured Lisa Loeb.
The singers and others are backed up the best of New York's downtown music scene.
The music is a tour from Bollywood through Boy Band pop to Americana ballad by way of quirky alt-pop and psychedelic Broadway.

Customer Reviews:
It's about time for this beautiful creation to debut!.......2006-04-03
This c.d. is bursting with passion and talent; with compassion and pride. I agree with the reviewer above me that it's about time we had a collection (and many more related ones!) of this sort. There are so many inspired collaborative efforts out there, focusing primarily on gay men and lesbians -- it's about time we mixed it up a good bit more, and started raising the (musical and metaphorical) roof for bisexual artists. Not to mention transgendered artists, which I really hope will be something we see not too far down the line.
If you love the artists on this marvelous medley, buy this fabulous album. (And share it with friends!) If you love good music and want to rock out with/for this rocking cause -- well -- also buy thus album! And definitely be prepared to be blown away by a truly wonderful range of talent, passion, and grace.
Pure grace.
BI THIS ALBUM!!!!!.......2004-06-01
FINALLY! Let's face it ... a bisexual musical compilation is long overdue. While this album only scratches the surface of all the incredible bisexual artists and friends who have been blessed us with music throughout history and around the globe, it's a damn good start. Every single track on here rocks. Kudos to Skott Freedman and company for taking this big step. Personally my musical preference, just like my sexual preference, is MORE! :) So how about Volumes 2, 3, 4, ... ?

Excellent Compilation.......2005-12-28
It may seem like "local bias" because I am from the Philly metro area, but this is the best sampler compilation I've heard in quite a while. Produced by Philadelphia's WXPN-FM, one of the best adult alternative stations in the country (and home of World Cafe), it's a very tasty cross-section of local talent - the performances are first-rate across the board, ranging from straight-ahead pop-rock to soul to folk, and more. The most high-profile name here is probably Amos Lee, whose debut album has met with accolades nationwide. You may recognize other singer-songwriters here as well, like John Flynn, Ben Arnold, Jim Boggia and Grey Eye Glances. (And if you're not familiar with them, this is a great place to start.) There are also very catchy numbers from lesser-knowns like Townhall, Mutlu and Mojo Stu. Proceeds from the CD also benefit "Musicians on Call", a worthy cause in which participating musicians bring live music to hospital patients in the area. So if you like World-Cafe style musical programming, you will really enjoy this CD.
