With Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese completely reinvented the way popular songs--instead of a made-to-measure score--can be used all the way through a movie to emphasize mood and action. He continues in that vein for The Departed, whose soundtrack is full of tunes by classic acts. If a theme emerges, it's great guitar work: on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," on the Allman Brothers' "One Way Out," on Badfinger's "Baby Blue," and on Roy Buchanan's "Sweet Dreams." (Even the two selections from Howard Shore's score highlight that approach, with performances by Marc Ribot and Larry Saltzman on "The Departed Tango" and by Sharon Isbin on "Beacon Hill.") A couple of numbers also deliver slight twists: the version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" is the live one from 1990, when it was performed with Van Morrison and the Band; and the Beach Boys' obscure 1972 song "Sail On, Sailor" isn't sung by its cowriter Brian Wilson. Thankfully, LaVern Baker and Patsy Cline help offset a very white, very male, very classic-rock selection. While it looks as if Scorsese stopped listening to music sometime around 1975, Beantown's Dropkick Murphys do contribute "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," a nod to the movie's setting. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
The Departed has been hailed as director Martin Scorsese's most powerful film since Goodfellas. With critical acclaim, major stars and all the punch of an explosive crime drama, The Departed is set to be a box-office smash. The soundtrack album features songs from all-time greats The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Allman Brothers Band, Roy Buchanan and Badfinger along with a collaboration between Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Van Morrison, and The Band. Add cult faves The Human Beinz, current South Boston punkers Dropkick Murphys, an R&B gem from LaVern Baker, a country- pop selection from the immortal Patsy Cline, and a pair of selections from Grammy® Award-winning score composer Howard Shore and The Departed's soundtrack album promises to be as widely popular as the film.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully captures the feel of the film.......2007-07-19
The Departed finally won Martin Scorsese the long overdue Oscar he has so very much deserved over the years. Like Goodfellas and Casino before it, The Departed utilized a soundtrack of previously available songs to set the mood and capture the feel of the film, and this soundtrack succeeds on just about all counts. The blistering live rendition of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" by Roger Waters, Van Morrison, and The Band starts the disc off, and is followed by classic tracks from the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers Band, and Patsy Cline. Sandwiched in between these older acts and the two score tracks contributed from composer Howard Shore, is the instantly catchy "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" from punk favorites the Dropkick Murphys, which you'll no doubt remember nodding your head to when watching the film. There may not be anything featured here that you haven't heard before or seen somewhere else, but the soundtrack for The Departed is a blast regardless and wonderfully captures the feel of the film. In those regards alone, the soundtrack, much like the film itself, is a pleasently wonderful treat.
Fabulous CD.......2007-06-27
I loved the movie and I love the soundtrack. I play it all the time.
Great.......2007-06-27
I really enjoy the Departed soundtrack it is a great mix of varying songs from all eras, and of course it came from a great movie.
The Departed.......2007-06-26
The soundtrack for the movie was so wonderful I knew I wanted it for my collection. Although the CD does not contain all the songs in the film, there are enough to make this one of a kind collection worth having.
great soundtrack.......2007-05-19
I loved the variety of music on the "Departed" soundtrack. From Roy Buchnanan to Patsy Cline's version of "Sweet Dreams", Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and The Stones! As a musician, I can confidently state that this soundtrack is about good music.

Album Description
Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER
Customer Reviews:
Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14
Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.
Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09
John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.
Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19
If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.

Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!

This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

As said, enjoyable from start to finish, room for more?.......2007-02-04
A well done collection; Elvis Pressley has a stirring rendition and perhaps there are copyright reasons as to why this is not on this album; and the Glenn Miller bigband version would have fit in well too. The Roger Whittaker track is moving and has a nice contemporary sound; but I still find fault with his ommission of some of the lyrics, poetic license should only go so far. Still, you will not be disappointed; I was in fact, captivated for the first few hours of listening to this CD, glad I got it on a Saturday. I am already, to the dismay of my old college roommates, one of those sorts who might listen to the same song 5 times in a row off an album. This is certainly solved here. My favorite versions must be the Mario Lanza and Kate Smith tracks; however, my choices may well change because each version certainly has it's merits. Oh, and lastly, some of you may need a box of kleenex to go along with this set.
The clarinet and flute solos are a part of my dreams now........2005-08-19
The concept of a single CD or multi-track recording focusing on a single melody has always seemed out of reach -- at least in a manner that would hold me in rapture from beginning to end. This CD did the job! In spades! Who could imagine the likes of Al Hirt, James Galway, Peter Nero, Richard Stoltzman (amazing! How does he do it?), Mario Lanza, Roger Whittaker and on and on . . . all in a dreamlike collection of wonderful renditions of a familiar melody that transported me back to my childhood (and that's over several decades to before World War II)? It's a good thing that CDs don't wear out! I put the Stoltzman (clarinet) solo on "repeat" while sleeping the other night and wow! My dreams were like none I can ever remember. Anyone who enjoys the "Danny Boy" melody should absolutely hear this marvelously well-balanced collection of . . . well, what else? . . . "Danny Boy" !!!
A beautiful song receives gracious arrangements........2002-10-29
This CD is enchanting from the very start. The variety of renditions keeps the listener tuned in. While it would be hard to imagine anyone purchasing this CD that didn't like the title song, the music is wonderful, especially when shuffled with other similar music on a multiplay CD player.

It's not often mentioned as one of Van Morrison's signature performances, but the highpoint of this 1988 collaboration--a heartbreaking rendition of the traditional tune "Carrickfergus"--ranks with anything the man has done. Morrison delivers the deathbed lament with a mix of fervor and penitence that's utterly convincing as the Chieftains enshroud him in a Gaelic tapestry of sound. The remainder of this reissue of the 1988 collaboration between Ireland's finest ain't too shabby, either. On more upbeat selections such as "The Star of the County Down," Morrison sounds uncharacteristically frisky, as if he's delighted to share the burden with the Chieftains. Listeners are likely to find the alliance equally satisfying. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:
Magic!.......2006-03-06
This album is a simply wonderful collaboration of two great Irish talents. The first is Van Morrison, that great Irish singer who is remembered for such great songs as "Brown-Eyed Girl" and "Moondance" (one of my personal favorites!). The second is The Chieftains, whose albums are always the very epitome of Irish traditional music. Together, it's...magic!
This is a great album, with a sound that is pure Ireland. I always loved Van Morrison, and must admit that I was dubious of what this album would sound like. But, in fact, this album is great, and I love the sound. If you are a fan of great Irish music, then you will love this album. I give it my highest recommendations!
Irish music fan.......2006-02-18
I was somewhat disappointed in this cd. I expected music that was more authentic than what was on the cd. I heard what sounded like rock music. The cd entitled "the best of the chieftains" was more to my liking.
Irish music at his best.......2005-08-28
this is a masterpiece, a great album from great artists: the Chieftains and Van Morrison; and that's all, folks!
A cut above the average Irish album. Huzzah for Morrison........2005-08-04
`Irish Heartbeat' is a collaboration of Van Morrison and the famed Irish band, The Chieftains, which owes as much to the synergy between the two talents as is does to the skills and artistry of each on their own.
This album has not nearly the same breadth and variety as the great Chieftains album, `The Long Grey Veil' with almost as many different guest artists (including Van Morrison) as there are tracks on the CD, especially if you count each of the members of The Rolling Stones individually. But, the appearance of Morrison and two of his songs sets the album above the run of the mill Irish album, even the run of the mill Chieftains album, who have had more than their share of superior albums.
Irish music albums suffer from the perception that all Irish songs are really the same melody done in various different styles, as a ballad, a jig, a hornpipe, or what have you. I never totally bought into this contention, but there is a sense that the `Irish lilt' can get a bit boring after hearing the 67th song with fiddle and pennywhistle.
But anyway, back to this album. Morrison's primary contribution is his great distinctive singing style, including what may be described as a Celtic scat vocal style which has been heard on his recordings for decades now.
If you simply have no use for Irish music, you will not like this album. But, If you do appreciate it now and again, this album is certainly better than average. If you are a Van Morrison fan, you must have this disc!
I didn't expect to like this..........2005-05-31
I always hated Van Morrison, and would make fun of him when my mom played his music. But I heard "Star of the County Down" and fell in love with this music.

Daniel is definitley another Andy Williams and Perry Como!!His voice is absolutley out of this world beautiful!!!!!!! I definitley LOVE this album!!!!
Absolute Best Collection of Irish Music to Own.......2006-06-17
Like another reviewer, I'd give this album a hundred stars if I could. It's simply the best collection of irish music to own...with all the favorites like Danny Boy, but includes many that will capture your heart, like Heaven Around Galway Bay, the Mountains of Mourne, Come Back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff, Cutting the Corn in Creeslough, and many, many more. If you're already a fan of this remarkable Irishman with the golden voice, you will love this album, because it is simply a great collection of all the best Irish songs he does.
If you've never had the privilege of hearing him sing, you are the poorer for it, and should remedy it immediately by buying this album, and I also recommend The Daniel O'Donnell Show, live in concert for a real taste of the Daniel experience. There is nothing that compares to seeing this man "own" the stage (check him out in Branson at TriLakes Theatre) and relate to his fans (who are legion and very devoted) His voice is mellow and he covers all types of music, even releasing a recent rock n roll album that will take you back to the 50's (wonderful job on this album too) but this particular album is the best collection if you love the traditional Irish songs (and a few you may have never heard)
You cannot hear his music without coming away uplifted and feeling good....it is addictive, which is one reason his concerts sell out months in advance and he is an international star, a favorite son of Ireland, and sought after for concerts all over the world.
Daniel O'Donnell the BEST.......2005-10-04
Should be a million stars.
Did he ever record I've got the whole world in My Hands. Would like to get the CD.
Get your dancing shoes on!.......2005-09-14
I would give this 100 stars, but could only give it 5.Excellent introduction to some classic Irish Music as only Daniel O' Donnell can sing it. You cannot be in a bad state of mind and listen to this music, you will be singing, clapping and dancing along. A wonderful way to spend a few hrs of your day. It is a must have for any Daniel O'Donnell fan, or anyone who loves Irish Music, young or old.
Irish Album.......2005-09-11
I usually don't listen to this type of music but I find this just an excellant cd's to have on. He Daniel O'Donnell has a very pleasant voice and I find his cd's very relaxing and soothing.

Itzhak Perlman plays Fritz Kreisler.......2007-01-11
I love this album. I owned it in a long play record for years and now have the CD to listen to. I love violin music and this is the best.
Kreisler flies again.......2006-04-26
One of my earliest memories is of listening to Kreisler playing his works on 78 rpm records. Many of these are what Perlman is playing oon this collection. The notes make a disclaimer: Perlman is not trying to play these "like Kreisler".
Well, I own a Kreisler CD of transcriptions -- a couple of them, in fact, and the characteristics that endear his playing to us Perlman has in full measure. Perlman is fully immersed in Kreisler feeling, something he attested to in an interview ("The Violinist", on DVD) and I humbly suggest that he is unsurpassed in this repertoire. The pianist is uncannily like Kreisler's own accompanist, and the sense of nostalgia is very strong indeed!
There are three other violinists --at least-- with Kreisler collections out" Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, and Kennedy. Of these, I think Gil Shaham does a beautiful job; I have not heard the other two.
I recommend this recording very highly indeed. The playing is as full of insidious charm and romantic almost to the point of sentimentality, which in my view is not a bad thing at all. (Gil Shaham's self-effacing style is lighter, providing a contrast for those who think that's what they want.)

Fantastic.......2007-06-12
Stephen Hough plays with such heart that it's amazing he's still in one piece. His mastery of both lyrical and athletic genres is incredible. His recordings never fail to move me.
a pianist's pianist performing musical gems..........2002-08-15
While not as well known to the world at large, Stephen Hough is well known among pianists. He's had the knack for finding music that has been neglected and bringing it to light. The music on this CD is a collection of gems -- whose luster Hough brings to light. If you enjoy piano music, this is a "must have" disc.
Some anthologies, become tiresome. Not this one. This is an album you can put on and listen to -- and then listen to the whole disc again...and again. Then I've gone back and listened to some individual tracks still again. The music is compelling, and the performances are masterful.
Let's hope for another disc such as this from the great Stephen Hough.
Exquisite, elegant, nostalgic pieces we seem to have ignored.......2001-01-02
If you have thought the loftier magnetic emotive fields of postmodernity, its conceptual excesses as having abandoning the virtues of obvious enchantments, contentment and reveries as flowing backwards this selection here is an ardent affirmation. All the selections are a celebration of the lost world of piano elegance, of a deeply thought through timbral curiosity reserved for the character piece. We often have simply placed on the shelves of music history these elegant particles of emotion in search for loftier weightier heights via the symphony or concerto. I dare say that time has been wasted. The sentimental the lost time is here evidenced in all these selections, Schubert/Liszt Soirees de Viene easily transports one back, nostalgically for we are escaping here the turmoils of the Hapsburg and Hollenzollerns kingdoms. Likewise the ardent piano composer Leopold Godowsky here his "Alt Wien" is like a New Years celebration. You will find neglected parts of the repertoire as well here pursued by Hough. The Moszkowski is like a crosshanded tribute to Scarlatti, little impeccably crafted textures and pianistic colours are here in Etincelles. Hough's arrangement of Kalman's "Was weiss ein nie gekusster Rosenmund" is simply for seriouslovers of any persuaion, like Marlene Dietrich's "I am driven to you like a moth to a flame". Hough plays all this music with the visionary reserve the music needs, I can easily see this music being romanticized where certain chord progressions certain emotive inflections at the ends of phrases, are(rubatisized) milked for all their worth. Hough here keeps/maintains a discipline.
The character pieces here of the Russian soul has also been neglected,We wanting the East to only join the West in loftier subject matter. Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky,in pairs of Humoresques have inspired memorable experiences based on simple melodies. There are as ever bit as a challenge to create as their colossol concertos. It is a skill of a different sort, but one just as vigorous creativily and challenging.
Richard Rodgers is also a serious creator of the memorable from within this mileau,"Hello young Lovers" is played as you've never heard it before. This music has a sustenance that simply will not fade with time. It seesm we need this music more than ever.

Album Description
"I first met Eliot Grasso in Achill Island, Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland in August 1999 at the island's annual summer school, Scoil Acla. After hearing him play the pipes for just a short while I was immediately aware that I was in the presence of a master musician, despite the fact that he was still in his mid-teens. Although he had only been playing the pipes for a few years at that stage, his technique and tone had developed to astonishing levels of excellence and richness and his repertoire was seemingly endless. This, combined with his intuitive sense of melodic and technical variation, makes him one of the most creative and dynamic musicians in the contemporary world of Irish traditional music."
"One of the most striking facets of Eliot's music is that he displays an intimate knowledge and understanding of every tune he plays. Careful examination of his playing reveals an emphasis on melodic fluidity which he largely achieves by viewing tunes as harmonic structures. This, in turn, enables him to develop original and attractive melodic variations which are among the most distinctive hallmarks of his piping. Another prodigious aspect of his playing is that he has succeeded in taking tunes not normally associated with the pipes and making them accessible to pipers in a manner which both compliments the pieces themselves and the idiosyncrasies of the instrument. He revels in playing tunes in keys such as G and D minor and A major, keys where many pipers fear to tread, despite the fact that many nineteenth-century chanters were designed to facilitate playing in these keys. To his great credit, Eliot has spent many hours absorbing the finer points of the music of a! range! ! of virtuoso performers, both pipers and non-pipers, and this experience in itself has given his music a very solid and authentic basis. His appreciation and performance of the standard piping repertoire leaves nothing to be desired and, furthermore, he has composed many fine tunes himself which show great understanding of both the pipes and traditional music itself."

An exceptional debut from a talented piper.......2005-04-14
As a newcomer to the world of Irish music, I must say that this CD alone has single-handedly made me a fan of the pipes for life. Whether in my car on the way to work or in the CD player around the house, the lively jigs and reels are a compliment to every activity as played deftly by this young virtuoso. Eliot's sound is vibrant and captivating, demonstrating time and again his intense personal relationship and hours of dedication to the study of Irish music. I recommend this album to all who appreciate fine music, Irish traditional fans and future enthusiasts alike.
