Editorial Reviews
Washington Post, April, 1997
Digging Hesperus's 'American Roots'...a nimble balancing of fidelity and freedom that makes this musical history tour is consistently appealing.

Product Description
Spirited new sounds from early Colonial America - from the arrival of the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic. Performing on recorders, Baroque violin, viola da gamba, flageolet, hammered dulcimer, cittern and Baroque guitar, the musicians perform high energy improvisations, lively country dance tunes, elegant French cotillions and early American shape-note hymns. Selections from this recording was chosen and is on the soundtrack to the Hollywood blockbuster Tim Burton's Paramont film Sleepy Hollow featuring Johnny Depp!Set in 1799, "Sleepy Hollow" is based on Washington Irving's classic tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Faithful to the dreamy custom-bound world that Irving paints in his story, the film mixes horror, fantasy and romance and features an extraordinary cast of characters that dabble in the supernatural and the Hesperus music fits perfect!

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.

festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-01-27

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

1 out of 5 stars Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD!!!.......2006-12-20

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

5 out of 5 stars rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

5 out of 5 stars we all love it.......2006-08-05

The whole family can enjoy this music, unlike many of the other kid's music that is so lame.

5 out of 5 stars An old time fav!!!.......2007-05-20

This is one of my favorite cd's and it comes in handy if you happen to be visiting a historical colonial home or other site of interest.

5 out of 5 stars Great old music.......2005-07-20

A good preview of what would become bluegrass in the US. This collection is a sure-fire way to commune with those who have come before. Hearing the uncommon instruments adds to the effect. Well done on all counts.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard this CD when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including the incredible "Celtic Roots" that has the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Sex and Fear.......2006-07-08

Regardless of the fact sound quality is not a factor for the pure sexual energy of the Gun Club, disc two is so stuffed with acoustic wonderment that the set price could be raised to a kidney. 'The Devil and the Nigger' is the song you've always wanted to hear but were too scared to know exists.

If raw sexual energy scares you so much your voice quakes (and it should) then this record will explain why. Life is about dirty, panicky, sex, and Gun Club know that.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, come ON........2004-12-04

    Sound quality?

How can somebody listen to a set as intense and raw and brutally beautiful as this and worry about SOUND QUALITY? Kids, the Gun Club were never meant to seep out of $1000 Bose "home entertainment center" speakers, and if you haven't figured that out yet, then you're beyond hope anyway. The songs on the second disc sound like dirty home recordings because they ARE dirty home recordings, and frankly I'm just thrilled to be able to hear them. Disc One, it's true, is hardly a multi-million dollar, post produced within an inch of its life, Frampton Comes Alive-type affair...and thank god for that. The fidelity ain't nearly as bad as Metallic KO either, and if that record can become an essential part of Iggy's canon I don't see why this one can't become a must-have in Jeffrey Lee's. Because this is the bottom line, people: the performances on this record absolutely scorch. Nobody with red blood, a heartbeat and a love for authentic rock'n'blues should be able to listen to the 1982 live versions of "For the Love of Ivy", "Preachin' the Blues" and "Fire Spirit" and think, "gee, this mix is a little trebly." This is intense, fantastic stuff. Admittedly not as essential a purchase as the first three studio albums...but close enough. Ignore the whining, do yourself a favor and listen to this record. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The flame that burned brightest..........2002-12-31

Seductive, pelvic grooves, blazing Delta slide guitar, and lyrical vision on par with Jim Morrison's made up The Gun Club's explosive compound. The early Gun Club played with passion, commitment, and an ear for tradition that set them apart from the monochord macho of West Coast Hardcore and freeze-dried irony of British New Wave. The founding fathers of the blues provided Gun Club founder Jeffrey Lee Pierce with inspiration, but JLP reached deeper into the darkness of the American collective unconscious than his predecessors dared. Images of desolation and depravity, haunted highways, and deadly women roam through Pierce's lyrics, sung in his plaintive, desperate tenor. JLP's ego and drunken onstage conduct began thinning The Gun Club's ranks after only two albums. The forces that fueled the artist destroyed the band, and ultimately, the man. Disc 1 opens with five 1981 demos that strike like lightning; the incredibly tight 13-song May, 1982 set (dubbed from a vinyl bootleg) is a thrilling, harrowing ride on the edge of an abyss. This show may well have been the original lineup's finest hour, providing definitive performances of most of JLP's best songs. The second disc of oddly poignant demos captures a twentyish Jeffrey Lee Pierce at home, playing mix of blues standards and originals on acoustic guitar. The poor sound quality on disc 1 is the only drawback to this document of short-lived brilliance.

2 out of 5 stars Buy Fire of Love.......2001-03-13

This is one of those CDs with the home recording, bad tracks and live songs. First of the home records sound like they where taped on a dirty tape recorder. The studio tracks are not on any real album cause they sound awful. Last lets face it Gun Club was one of the greatest bands to ever exist but they suck live. Every time I say them JLP was drunk and made no sense. They are great to watch live but you can not capture that feeling with a poor recording. This is great if you want to hear outtakes and stuff. I gave it 2 stars because it has some historical value. If you really want to hear a great Gun Club album by Fire of Love.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fun bluegrass adventure into grooveland.......2002-09-24

The forever innovative Peter Wernick is always taking bluegrass music to a new consciousness. His Live Five ensemble fuses early jazz, Dixieland and bluegrass into a tasty treat that really grooves. There is a clear dichotomy and contrast between their presentations of classics like Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman's "Seven Come Eleven" or Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." However, through it all, Live Five remains hep to the jive. It's obvious that expert banjoist Wernick has found his musical match with the rest of this solid group: George Weber on vibes; Bill Pontarelli on clarinet; Kris Ditson on drums (primarily with brushes); and Roger Johns on electric bass. These cats are virtuosos and play with both shoes tied. Their musical sensibilities also allow them to have fun as they pick, grin and swing together. Clearly, they are inspired by each other as they adventure into grooveland.

The album opens with an upbeat "Alabamy Bound," with vocals by Sean Blackburn. Peter Wernick contributes seven self-penned compositions. The ebullient energy of Live Five really shines on both uptempo pieces like "Pick and Roll,"as well as Wernick's slower tunes like the bluesy "Up All Night" that features Pontarelli's fine clarinet playing. "Owensboro Hop" and "On a Roll" and "Foggy Mountain Special" were all recorded live at the Boulder Theater. Joan (Nondi) Wernick contributes the vocals for "My Buddy," and Bill Pontarelli sings on "Sweet Georgia Brown." The closing track of "Soldier's Joy 5 Ways" is best described as a band of soldiers marching, dancing, stomping at the Savoy.

Peter Wernick's Live Five goes where no bluegrass (or jazz ensemble for that matter) has gone before. The music is fun, enjoyable, and inspiring. Simply put, the band is alive with jive. For a little 'grass in the groove, I highly recommend this album. -- Joe Ross, moderator/reviewer for Nwbluegrass

5 out of 5 stars Blues to the Very Core.......1999-09-05

We're all pretty sure we knew where the blues came from - the delta, right? The streets of Chicago? But the songs here prove that the blues is the people's music, invented and crafted by working folks. At first my interest was historical, but these songs are so close to the emotional bone that they slip under the skin and stay there. "Russia Let That Moon Alone", for example, is hilarious on first listen, prophestic afterwards. ("Time done change" she sings over and over, until you friggin' believe it!) Or One String, a homeless man who uses a tin can and a one string guitar, but is harsh and melodic at the same time. This is my favorite Blue Masters album, and I own them all. Buy for the education - stay for the fun!

          Album Description

Following on the heels of 2003's highly acclaimed 'for Karrie,' Brine's new release chronicles his career which spans over two decades and features highlights from earlier releases including his Grammy-nominated 'New Blue Yodel' tribute to Jimmie Rodgers that led to a debut performance on the Grand Ole Opry with Hank Snow and the Rainbow Ranch Boys, as well as several previously unreleased cuts.

Brine's cast of musicians includes stellar performances by some of Nashville's finest and beyond. Fiddler, David Russell (Boxcar Willie) filled in on several of the sessions for long time friend, Linda Joseph who teamed up with Brine at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge in the 70's; Denis Colby on lead guitar (it's worth mentioning that while it's true Nashville is not want for exceptionally great guitar players, Colby could be their poster boy); Stacy Phillips (Bluegrass Union) on dobro, John Ownby on stand-up bass and drummer Rick Lonow (The Jamie Hartford Band and Burrito Deluxe) as well as a host of other characters fill out the lineup.

'Fortunes' is quintessential Americana and a rich and concise collection by this gifted singer/songwriter. The definitive collection for fans and the uninitiated listener alike, it offers a sampling of what others have come to associate with Brine's music. Geoffrey Himes summed it up best when he wrote in The Baltimore Citypaper , "Some of his songs are sentimental, some of them are preachy, but the best of them quickly get to the heart of the matter ... and all of them are delivered in an utterly distinctive voice -- a twangy, crusty tenor full of yearning, laughter, and unexpected power."

          Review for Mark

When I first heard Mark Brine's music, I was delighted and amazed. There is such a truthfulness to the true American country culture that built America and such talent and well shaped musical melodies that he surely belongs in the National Traditional Country Music Association Hall of Fame, which he now is.

This guy plays quite beautifully. Every note, every phrase is filled with expression and beauty and meaning. He doesn't need to dazzle, something which he can do, because he has real meaning and feeling.

A song writer and balladeer who touches often, love songs, meaning, feeling and nostalgia and humor. Mrs. Alexander's Farm will make you cry and laugh. The love song "For Karrie" is a beautiful country love song.

One of the few true voices of the American earth. All the suger cake pop musicians out of Los Angeles and New York will speedily be forgotten, but not Mark Brine.
