Phil Coulter began his career as a prolific songwriter for everybody from Them to the Bay City Rollers(!). Indeed, if his output went no further than "Puppet on a String" and the much-covered "The Town I Loved So Well," he would be assured of an honored place in the Celtic pop-rock pantheon. However, during the '90s he made a not-too-sudden turn and produced several nicely arranged easy-listening/New Age projects, most of which still sell incredibly well. After essaying Irish and Scottish themes on the many other Tranquility albums, he and his ensemble are heard here in a songbook of American melodies, including tunes by Stephen Foster. Among the selections are "Shenandoah," "Beautiful Dreamer," "The Streets of Laredo," "The Green Leaves of Summer," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," and "There's No Place Like Home." Fans of country-and-western-style, piano-led instrumentals will love American Tranquility. --Christina Roden

How do you define "perfection"?.......2006-11-10
I have all of Coulter's CDs. Each is better than the next. Relaxing but still lively and stirring. Everyone should like all of Coulter's music.
One of Coulters best..........2006-05-02
I have every one of Phil Coulter's CD's, and this is one of my favorites. The song Hoedown is on another CD also, but something about this one.....I can't listen sitting down, or at least have to clap and "jig" with every available body part! When that last song finishes, I often have to just play the whole thing all over again. Great music!!
Everfresh.......2006-03-31
I can listen to this over and over without tiring. Selections, arrangements, performance all A+
American music that captures the American experience..........2001-03-25
I especially enjoy music by American composers and compositions that traditionally appear in hymnals and/or are performed at school concerts, etc. If you enjoy beautiful American music/songs this CD is for you.
A dear friend introduced my wife and I to Phil Coulter by playing a tape of "American Tranquility" several years ago. We were so impressed that we immediately purchased the CD and played it repeatedly while driving pass the lush green fields in the "Great State of Iowa."
It's perfect music for "motoring" across the countryside, or as background music for work areas or classrooms.
The arrangements of these traditional favorites are original and vary from song-to-song, track-to-track.
I'm waiting, somewhat impatiently, for "American Tranquility II."
Phil Coulter's American Tranquility CD Review.......2000-07-11
I first heard this CD while listening to the "Sounds of the Season" music channel on DirecTV, during the 4th of July holiday. Over the next few hours as I listened to the music being played in the background on this channel, I kept running to the television screen every so often when they played a song I liked. I noticed a lot of the songs were by Mr. Coulter on the CD you are considering purchasing today. It is a wonderful 4th of July type - bring back old fond memories of a simpler time CD to play! Trust me, buy it, you will be glad you did!

simple roads to pleasure.......2007-07-09
If a live album can offer at least ten or twelve awesome moments, then I am apt to offer it a five star rating. This one delivers. The band truly comes to life in a live concert setting. They deliver masterful versions of songs about love, life, nature; and sort of earthy, philosophical takes on thousands of other nuances of living. They remind me so much of the Dead, who came on so innocuously before setting the hook and pulling you delightfully into their richly detailed realms.
Catch em on the current tour if you're lucky!
Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility [LIVE] .......2006-02-20
Samples fans this is either in your collection or it should be. From what I have read the Samples are a band to see live this double disk supports that conclusion. The samples where one of the first bands I remember listening to in middle school a friend of mine had a copy of what I want to say was the self titled album. Over a decade later I found a copy of my sisters and since then they have been a staple of mine. A particular favorite to listen to when driving through the country and a particular favorite of my black labradours'.
I am always suspect of live albums as a lot can be lost with less than perfect recording quality. There is something lost with with the live recording but the energy that the band gives to their fans makes up the difference.
The ablum includes many of the songs I like from a whole array of albums and even a cover of the John Lennon song Watching the Wheels, Conquistador, Buffalos and windmills and Sacred Stones.
This band is timeless, I acctually find it gets better with each listen and new perspective. I don't believe I would buy this album first but should you already like the Samples or just dig live music pick this up its more than worth the money.
Great.......2004-08-18
I love the versions of "Giants" "Still Water" "The Last Drag" "Streets in the Rain" and "Information". Not as good as actually going to one of their shows but still worth the price of admission. Some of the acoustic versions are a little weak for my taste ("Summertime") but still a great 2 CD set. Kenny James drumming is awesome -
Remains one of the Best from one of music's Best!.......2004-03-04
The Sample's "Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility" is a live album from The Samples released in 1997. As an avid Samples fan, this CD remains one of my favorite albums by the band. As the liner notes indicate, the album was recorded during a period of band member transitions, and there was some doubt as to whether the band would remain together. Thankfully, Sean Kelly and company have remained together to this day and continue to produce some of the best and most overlooked rock music.
The bulk of the material in this double CD is live material found on their earlier studio releases, including their self-titled debut, No Room, The Last Drag, and Autopilot. There are also a few studios songs sprinkled in, including a cover of John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels". What I enjoy most about this Samples album is the stripped-down nature of the songs; most are acoustic and a bit of a departure from their earlier works. There are a couple of weak songs, notably "Prehistoric Bird" and a remake of an early Samples song, "African Ivory". However, there are some great gems that appear on later albums, such as "Indiana" and "Losing End of Distance"
In my humble opinion, The Samples continue to be the best, if least known band in music today. While Sean Kelly's voice may not be spectacular, his song writing is superb and the musical instrumentation is terrific. The lyrics often tell wonderful stories and vignettes of love, life, and loss. I've been to dozens of Samples concerts since first seeing them in 1992, and I've rarely been disappointed. If you are either a longtime Samples fan or just discovering their music, I highly recommend this album.
Best CD you can own.......2003-06-10
The Samples have always been a favorite of mine. The Samples good energy combined with creative lyrics make them a band i will keep listening to over and over. This CD (2 Discs, actually) is one that you will keep in your CD player for a long time, and keep listening to it.
By far the best Samples CD, do yourself a favor and buy this.

Customer Reviews:
Not great.......2007-03-29
I can't give it less than 3 stars because I love the musical. However, this recording is less than spectacular. It sounds like it was recorded by some guy in the audience with a mono tape recorder. I was disappointed in the leads, also. They're trying to hard to sound like rock stars, which makes them sound rather cheesy. There are good moments, but if you're new to "Chess," go with the original concept album. You can't beat Elaine Paige and Murray Head.
Mate in Sweden!.......2007-02-07
Cold War Chess Championships came and went with the demise of the Soviet Union, as did the staging of Chess The Musical. This is to be regretted since musically and lyrically it is by far the best work from Abba duo Andersson and Ulvaeus, aided amply by Tim Rice. Oddly relatively unknown in Scandinavian, this concert performance, now well over ten years old, helped bridge the gap. It also managed to bring to the attention of producers that concert productions of this piece are perhaps the best way of bringing Chess to life in the post Cold War climate of the twenty-first century, and in particular relegating the old East West rivalry to the wings while focusing on the relationships-especially that of Florence and the Russian. Indeed they get all the best songs with the climatic finale You and I (reprise) making the hairs stand on the back of ones neck. The performance throughout are accomplished and enthusiastic, and the live performance and crowd responses add to the drama unfolding 'on stage'. One can only hope that Chess will remain in the consciousness of audiences and actors, producers and directors, as this CD is a perfect advertisement for a night of Chess at the theatre or concert hall
Not that good.......2006-04-05
Contains the extra songs not found in the "studio release" (with Ms. Paige etc.). However, the quality is poor and even the artists are no match to the ones in the studio recording. However, a must for Chess-aficionados.
An ok album........2003-07-02
I now own all the five major (legal) recordings of Chess; Original Concept, Broadway Cast, In Concert, "Danish" Complete Cast and Swedish cast.
All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.
I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.
If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.
Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.
If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28
I have owned, and have been a huge fan of, the original London cast recording of Chess since 1985. I love the mix of classical and rock stylings, and I'm also a major fan of practically anything that Benny and Bjorn turn out. However, I approached this album with some reservations. I know the original album of Chess backwards and forwards, so I was a little skeptical as to how a "live" version would compare to the studio version. I needn't have worried. For the most part, this is an absolutely incredible concert, with only one or two weak spots. It boasts an excellent cast, and a wonderful choir and orchestra. Of the main characters, there is only one returning member from the London concept album; Tommy Korberg reprises his role as the Russian, but my gosh........what a difference a decade makes! He was excellent the first time around, but now, Tommy injects his performance with so much fire, it will make your hair stand on end. The showstopping duet with Svetlana (Lena Ericsson)on "Endgame" is worth the price, alone.......just breathtaking. Not everything works equally as well, but as I said above, there are more "hits" than "misses". Having been a fan of the duo, "Gemini", (Anders and Karin Glenmark), I was thrilled to see them step into the spotlight again, this time as the American and Florence, respectively. I was, however, a little disappointed to discover that Anders' performance is not quite up there with Murray Head's in the original. Anders has the better voice, no doubt, but the conviction is just not the same; Murray was more convincing in the role, and I agree with another reviewer who said they didn't like Anders' histrionics. It's a bit "over the top" at times. As for Karin, she is a fabulous singer, (as is her brother.....don't get me wrong on that point....). My only problem with her is her pronunciation on a few words, but seeing how this CD was recorded in Sweden, released on a Swedish label, and probably really isn't intended for an American market, it's kind of understandable too. A couple of good things to point out in general; this CD finally adds two songs that were missing from the original recording; the gorgeous "Someone Else's Story", (beautifully performed by Karin Glenmark), and "The Soviet Machine", (part of which appears in the track "Opening Ceremony"). The reprise of "Merano" is a great addition at the end of the concert, with an ecstatic audience clapping along and cheering at it's conclusion. All in all, this is a great addition to your collection, even if you have the first recording. With variations in tempos, different interpretations of pieces, and two bonus songs, it's the same musical, and yet, not quite the same.

Dick Barsamian and Ara Topouzian come together to demonstrate their skills on the oud and kanun presenting a collection of classic Armenian folk songs for your listening pleasure. This is the first time two musicians have come together to create a "concert" of songs for one's listening enjoyment. Each song is of a traditional background, with original arrangeing by both Dick and Ara.An excellent album for all occasions!
Customer Reviews:
Nice, exotic instrumental music.......2001-09-30
This should prove a good buy for those interested in musics from around the world. Ara Topouzian plays the qanun (kanun) well, as does Dick Barsamian the ud. This cd has no singing, its all ud and qanun. The recording would be better if it were done in a really good studio with a great audio engineer, but its not bad either. As the title implies, its pretty relaxing - nice for an Armenian, Persian, or Turkish dinner or just listening. Qanun has a unique sound and its curious more people don't list to it.
Great music - heard on PBS around the US!.......2000-06-11
I first heard this CD on the PBS documentary The Armenian Americans in New York. Both Ara and Dick have a quick appearance in the film, but most of the music on it is from this album. I went to Amazon and bought it. Wow! great stuff - the oud and kanun sound so nice together. A great buy!
