The 15 lesser-known tracks included in this compilation deliver exactly what the title states. Peter, Paul & Mary, of course, helped invent "protest" music when they recorded Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," transforming it into a '60s civil rights anthem. That song isn't included here; in fact, the best-known tune is Phil Ochs's "There But for Fortune," although folk fans will also be familiar with Woody Guthrie's Depression-era "Pastures of Plenty" and the antiwar "Wasn't That a Time," most often associated with the Weavers. The social concerns addressed range from environmental degradation (the antinuke "Power") to racial disharmony (Pete Seeger's childlike "All Mixed Up") to political injustice (the graphic albeit melodically beautiful "El Salvador"). "Don't Laugh at Me," the sole new track here, preaches childhood tolerance, making it a perfect companion piece to PPM's classic "Danny's Down," also included here. The gorgeous, melodic new song is a must for fans, and although the other 14 songs are culled from nine previous LPs, it's still impressive to hear such sincere expressions of social consciousness. --Bill Holdship

True Folk Music.......2006-07-16
I started playing the guitar in the early 60s, and most of what I played and sang was folk music - Joan Baez, PP&M to name two. This CD is absolutely inspiring. It reminded me of how committed I had been to a better world. I'm ashamed to say that I drifted away from this music, but I still have my guitar, so it's time to get back on board and work towards freedom, peace and justice.
The legacy of Peter, Paul & Mary as folk singers.......2002-04-23
The idea behind "Songs of Conscience & Concern" is Peter, Paul & Mary sang lots of other great protest songs besides their popular hits "If I Had A Hammer," "Blowin' In The Wind," and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone." I might not have heard PP&M sing many of the songs included in this retrospective collection, but several of them are quite familiar from all the folk music I have been listening to this year. The album begins with the Weaver's "What That A Time" and Woody Guthrie's "Pastures Of Plenty," two songs I have recently discovered and greatly admire. The issues covered in these songs stretch from the Great Depression to today and the songs come from a dozen PP&M albums, although it is not surprising that three of the songs come from their "Flowers and Stones" album. One of the things I really noticed on this album was that they reflect not only the graceful harmonies of the trio, but that the instrumental work on some of these songs is as good as anything we have heard them do. With their successful holiday concerts and the enduring legacy of "Puff the Magic Dragon," it is important sometimes to remember that Peter, Paul & Mary were folk singers, and that once upon a time folk singers were the social conscience of this nation. This album is a remember of those times.
Touching CD!.......2001-01-14
This Peter ,Paul and Mary Cdis a dimaond in the ruff.It contains all lesser known songs. So if you want there famous and best songs you won`t find them on here .However the song EL SALVADOR takes us back to the Reagan presidency and wonders why are troops are there? But the one song that made this album a must by for me is DON`T LAUGH AT ME!...THIS SONG WILL SIMPLY TOUCH YOUR HEART!The song reflects on all the kids and people who are always ridiculed for there awkward appearances or social status.Maybe every cruel kid who tortured another kid as a child should listen to this song?As the song says in the end we all will get our angel`s wings. We are truely all equal in the eyes of God.If you wish to teach your kid about life ,buy this cd and listen to this song!
A Great Compilation of the Music PPM is Best At.......2000-10-05
PPM have been my favorite group ever since my parents bought us their first albums in the early sixties. I have also raised my now college-aged kids on PPM. I thoroughly enjoy this CD, even though I have all the songs (except the new one) on my other PPM CDs. My favorite titles are "Danny's Downs", "Home is Where the Heart Is" and "Don't Laugh at Me". They make us "conscience" of social issues that affect all of us here and now. It is great to have most of my favorite PPM songs on one CD. It is great to see that after 40 years they are still giving us great 'G' rated music.
Don't wait.......2000-08-16
I was reluctant to buy this CD because I had all the cuts, except their latest, on other CD's and albums in my collection. I have to say now that the recordings are all exceptional performances and "Don't Laugh at Me" alone is worth the price of the CD. Don't wait . . . don't hesitate to invest in a copy of this CD for yourself.

Amazon.com
Few collections are so aptly titled as The Golden Harvest, a rich survey of Shaker songs, chants, and spirituals dating from the mid-19th century. The music often recalls the shapes and cadences of English folksong, while its unaccompanied, unison performance tradition connects with medieval chant. Thirty-eight selections are partitioned into groups according to subject: there are songs about birds, heavenly spirits, and the all-important harvest. Joel Cohen, who transcribed much of this music from old manuscripts, mixes and matches performers drawn from the Boston Camerata in solo and group settings to ensure maximum timbral and expressive variety. Hear, for example, how the call-and-response patterns in "Pretty Home" build to a joyful climax. By contrast, some of the introspective, a cappella hymns quietly resonate with poignant simplicity. A bonus track features the six Shaker family members of Sabbathday Lake, Maine, in conversation with Joel Cohen. In sum, this disc is a beautifully assembled, excellently annotated follow-up to Cohen's 1994 Shaker anthology, Simple Gifts. Should you feel inclined to sing along, full texts are included. --Jed Distler

Shaker Music at its best.......2002-03-18
For authenticity and variety, this is one of the best albums available. It includes both well-known and new songs done in proper Shaker tempo using voices alone to convey the feelings reflected in the songs. The comments by the Shakers regarding their thoughts about their music gives a special touch to the album. This album, along with the earlier one titled "Simple Gifts", is a worthwhile addition to any collection.
Simply Beautiful.......2000-12-02
The Boston Camerata is characteristically superb in interpreting this new collection of 19th century Shaker spirituals. Like their previous recording of Shaker songs, "Simple Gifts," the Camerata captures the hope and humility of Shaker belief, performing with bouyant movement and emotional clarity. By dividing the songs into thematic sections however, this CD is untimately stronger and more consistent than the latter. The Native American songs are particulary unique and the addition of a youth choir and the Shakers brothers and sisters add a freshness and reality to the smooth as silk voices of the ever professional Camerata. The tunes sound like a combination of folk and traditional protestant church music, but the lyrics reveal many elements of Shaker theology, some quaint, some still as revolutionary as they must have seemed in 1830. This CD offers an inspirational experience no matter what your religious background, the perfomances transcend definition.

Homeless In America CD Review.......2006-10-28
I have had the opportunity to listen to all Twenty One tracks on this CD. I was really touched by the music. The music was produced professionally and takes on a unique sound of it's own. The lyrics alone will help one identify with the social issues in America. I think this is an important CD as well as entertaning. This is a must hear CD for everyone.
Meaningful.......2005-11-11
Not only is this CD filled with great music performed by fantastic musicians, it has a message. Now, most times when you say that, people don't want a message... just to be entertained. In this case, you will get both and plenty of it. Like a spoonful of sugar, these excellent songs WILL entertain you while you can absorb the social conscience of the songs. If you love country/bluegrass played by top-notch musicians, you can't miss the opportunity to pick up this CD.
Glad I own It.......2005-11-10
This Cd would appeal to almost everybody for different reasons. As an average listener, it is filled with nice melodies that are all professionally performed. For those who think music should try to "say something", this is a treasure chest, filled with social commentary delivered in a non-judgemental way. No preaching here, just lots of food for thought. For the musician, this CD will stand up to anything on the market. The vocalists and players are second to none...honestly..and tracks like "Slow Train" will convince you quickly. I whole heartedly recommend this CD for anyone who is looking for great music and wants their purchase to also fund a very noble cause.
This is a great CD.......2005-11-08
Interesting mix of country, rock and blues music. Some tracks have social/political theme; others do not. Something for everyone in this one.
I like this CD!.......2005-11-08
Some of the songs on this CD are really good. I particularly would recommend "Homeless" and "Somebody." Also very good is "Writing on the Wall." Quite a mix of different music styles - something for everyone.
