Darol Anger isn't the sort of musician who stretches musical boundaries; he's the sort of musician who refuses to concede that such boundaries even exist. On Republic of Strings he and his American Fiddle Ensemble use relatively simple tunes such as Irish fiddler Liz Carroll's "Lost in the Loop" or Bill Monroe's "Old Dangerfield" as a starting point to create harmonically complex, rhythmically rich arrangements. The band consists of guitarist Scott Nygaard, the brilliant young fiddler Brittany Haas, cellist Rashad Eggleston, and Natalie Haas, who takes Eggleston's place on three tracks. Guest artists include Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins, who lends vocals to a slightly spooky version of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," and Laurie Lewis, who delivers a bluegrass-tinged take on Joni Mitchell's "Help Me." --those that surround themselves with sycophants and those that associate with their peers or betters.

Darol Anger is distinctly of the latter type. The musicians he has chosen to play with on this altogether remarkable disc are every bit his peers, if not his superiors. The result is a disc of magnificent presence and accomplishment.

Perhaps the standout characteristic of this astounding music is the diversity of material Anger has managed to round up and "break" (as one might a wild bronc) within its purview: everything from Irish traditional ("Lost in the Loop") to Detroit soul ("Higher Ground") to Kentucky bluegrass ("Old Dangerfield") to elay folk-rock ("Help Me" [nearly unrecognizable, it must be said], featuring the eartheral vocals of Laurie Lewis) to Villa-Lobos-like Brazilian-classical ("Andre de Sabato Nuovo") to smart swing ("Sneezin'") to Arabic ("Ouditras Rez") to gospel/blues ("Evening Prayer Blues") to African ("Dzinomwa Muna Save") to Scandinavian fiddle music ("Sand").

Surrounding himself with up-and-coming musicians of the absolute top rank (wildly creative fiddle player Brittany Haas; hugely underregarded flat-picking guitarist Scott Nygard, practically the peer of David Grier; monster cellist Rushad Eggleston), Anger has upped the ante of string-band music almost off the charts, with us, the listeners, being the beneficiaries.

Rhapsodic gloriousness of the first order: You snooze, you lose. Plus, contains a hidden mysterioso track that contextualizes the proceedings with gravitas beyond the call of duty.

Fans of progressive acoustic music think they know Darol Anger, but they won't know what hit them after they hear this! It seems like most musicians of Darol's generation are content to mine existing veins, settling into a cosy twilight. Not Anger -- here he's paired with two amazing young musicians (cellist Rushad Eggleston and fiddler Brittany Haas) and, along with under-rated flatpicker Scott Nygaard, use the techniques he has developed over years of exploration to enliven a new set of music drawn from all over the world. The guitar and cello are an unexpectedly forceful rhythm section, driving Anger and Haas to new levels of invention and intensity. But this isn't all about flash: the slower, more spacious tunes are amazingly empathetic -- bordering on telepathy. It's great to hear someone like Darol still testing the limits of his music...if you're new to his music, or haven't heard him in a while, here's where you pick up.

    Though the Republic of Strings features 14 musicians, ranging in age from 14 to 52, the conductor-in-chief is clearly Darol Anger, a violinist and mandolinist who has established his own worldly approach to the new acoustic music of fellow travelers like David Grisman, Mike Marshall, and Béla Fleck. Second-in-command is guitar prodigy Scott Nygaard, who gives the tunes their rhythmic drive as well as a few precise improvisational leads, allowing Anger, cellist Rushad Eggleston, and five-string fiddler Brittany Haas to jam, trill, and generally outwail each other. The collective's vision, however, remains surprisingly smooth, despite the wide range of musical currents, including Celtic and European folk styles and baroque chamber music as well as post-bop jazz and Anglo-American fiddle tunes, which may be closer in harmonic structure than you'd guess. The prettiest performance is the luminous, almost chanson-like "Father Adieu," while the most purely exciting is the seven-minute live jam on the Yellowjackets' "Rain Dance." The album's only misfires are the two attempts at the pop music canon. On "Chain of Fools," singer Chris Webster goes for remote cool but mostly sounds genteel, while Terry Pinkham oversings on a bluegrassy interpretation (with a brief new age interlude) of Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird." --Roy Kasten

    Listen to "The Seagull/The Bay Day", and you will know what this disk has to offer: beautiful arrangements of great tunes, tracks that you will be playing over and over and over again. This tune is so beautiful that when the CD player hits it, you'll enter a whole new world. Then spin "The Ramblin Barber", an Ornette Coleman tune, which absolutely smokes. "Lady Hamilton" will satisfy your old-time bone, and the rest of the tunes round out a great effort. I can't wait until the next offering from these master musicians.

    The Republic of Strings' second record offers a seasoned band of string musicians known for their groove, improvisation, and musical intuition as a tight, in sync unit. Darol and his band members continue to push the 'limits' of every boundary imaginable with their choice in repertoire, proving that a string band can play any style of music while appealing to the hearts and ears of new and faithful fans alike.     Listening to this CD was a wonderful surprise! The musicians are excellent. The arrangements are diverse and exciting. The introduction by Amazon's music reviewer here was a bit different from my perception of the CD as I found the Chain Of Fools track to be far more appealing than the Father Adieu track. The Tan Hut and Rain Dance are superb, as are Lady Hamilton and The Ramblin' Barber. I highly recommend this CD.

      I find this CD so frustrating! The Lord's Prayer was the first LP I ever purchased, and it's impact and beauty have never left me. I had all but given-up every seeing it on CD until this reissue came along. Both LPs on one CD, how can you go wrong? You can't actually UNLESS you want the complete first LP. They left out ONE SELECTION ("O, My Father") - probaby a time consideration. In any event, two great LPs, the remastering isn't much. It pales against the original LPs, but its great to have most of the albums.

      I have been waiting to find this on CD for years, and am so happy to have found it. One of the best albums of religious music ever. The interpretations are simple and exquisite, the phrasing clear, and each choice harmonious and moving.

      Now if you'd just offer the sequel, "The Lord's Prayer II"...

      I have been listening to this recording in both its vinal and cd form since about 1966. I think it is the best of the MTC recordings of religious music with a good cross section of both Mormon and Mainline music.

        I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

        I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

        This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

        While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

        I'm just one person but this isn't what I expected. It's good and I've listened to it several times but it isn't what I anticipated it would be.

        The advertising I'd heard on the radio led me to order this product. I'm learning to be more cautious. I assumed that what was said on the radio would be true when the product arrived.

        I'd not buy again.

        This is a nice CD that serves as an overview of mostly baroque choral pieces by one of my favorite choirs. One of the advantages of this CD it that it allows you to compare Beethoven's "Hallelujah Chorus" with the more famous Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." I think that Beethoven's starts out better, but Handel's is, overall, far superior.

        They do a remarkable job singing the Humming Chorus, an absolutely oddball piece of classical music, reminiscent of the Magic Flute's Papageno singing with the padlock on his mouth! No, there is nothing wrong with your hi-fi; the choir is just humming the music.

        The choir does a magnificent job signing the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which, along with Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus, is one of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's signature pieces.

        They did an exceptional job of transferring the old analogue recordings to CD, so there is minimal hiss and fading.

        This is great music for Sunday, or for Easter and Christmas. It is nice to have a touch of the holy in your life, if not for a day, at least for a few minutes.

        I remember listening to Come, Come Ye Saints on a L.P. when I was growing up and really being so captivated by it. I was thrilled when I heard that was on a CD with so many of their other treasures. This is a must have for those who really appreciate choral works.
