On stage, via songs and stories, David Wilcox is on a mission: to uplift, inspire, and cajole to laughter. This largely solo acoustic live set--Jake Armerding adds a bit of fiddle and mandolin--more than accomplishes that goal. Still, the material, as well as the between-song banter, often comes off with the vague, hopeful spirituality of a motivational speaker. The principal flaw lies in the selections: Wilcox's tougher, smartly detailed work is forsaken for message songs about roads not taken, rusty American dreams, and "kindness that clears my skies." Some of the well-rehearsed stories are genuinely funny, but Wilcox rarely challenges his audience to think or feel beyond New Age platitudes. Fans will delight in reliving his intimate live shows, but newcomers would be better served by wider-ranging, less preachy efforts like East Asheville Hardware or What You Whispered. --Roy Kasten

Great stories and wonderful Music!.......2007-03-28
Mark Schultz is truly an incredible hidden talent that is finally getting some recognition. I purchased this cd and was completely blown away! His dvd that is included in this cd package gives background info to many of the stories. Highly Recommend! WOW! What will he do next to keep up with the quality and talent he demonstrated here??!!!
Mark Schultz.......2007-02-17
Loved this DVD. Mark Schultz has such a great personality and it comes out in this CD/DVD.
Sorry, but I can't review this. .......2007-01-09
I think it was a post office problem and I've contacted the post office about thrie having said that they received the package....because I've never received it. I don't know what else I can do.
I had to put a star rating on this review or the Amazon server wouldn't let me post. Please ignore it. I have no idea how to rate it.
Awesome CD/DVD!.......2006-12-09
"Mark Schultz Live: A Night of Stories and Songs" is incredible, and very uplifting. Mark tells the stories behind many of his greatest songs, and also talks about how he got to where he is. It really surprises me that a talent scout told him: "This may not be what you're supposed to do" after he listened to a few of Mark's songs, because Mark Schultz has become my favorite artist of all time. I think that what happened with Mark Schultz is a testimony about what can happen when you listen to God instead of other people. I've been there a few times myself, except sometimes I listened to people instead of God, and I have regretted it every single time. Mark didn't give up after his meeting with the talent scout, and I'm glad he didn't.
A number of his songs have really hit home with me. "Closer To You" really hit me when my cousin passed away after a twelve year fight with cancer. It hit me hard enough that I typed the lyrics as I listened to the song, printed them out, and posted them at my cousin's grave site. I heard "Letters From War" a month before my brother was scheduled to leave for Iraq (He made it home safe by the way), so the first time, it was salt in an open wound; but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it, because I felt like God was saying: "My son, you've got to trust Me. I will look after your brother, so don't worry."
Mark Schultz truly has a Christian background, and he demonstrates his love and appreciation for Christ, as well as for everyone in his life who helped to support him. [...] should give customers the option to give 100 stars, because a 5 star rating does not even come close to giving him his due credit. Mark Schultz is AWESOME!
AWESOME.......2006-09-12
This CD/DVD combo is the best gift I could have gotten for myself. I had wanted to get a CD of Mark's that had his newest song 'I am' on it, and when I found out that this one was live and also had some of his older songs included, I had to grab this one off the shelf. His voice has such passion and emotion in it, his music lifts me up and makes me feel so good and happy.... his music truly is beautiful. I can't say enough good things about him.
I have LOVED his music ever since he was introduced with the song 'I am the Way' on the Wow 2001 CD.

Customer Reviews:
David Wilcox Is Awesome.......2007-02-17
Like sitting in a small room and hearing his thoughts and the resulting music. Humor, melody, poetry, and as ever that incredible guitar.
Just Like Being There.......2005-04-13
After being a fan for ten year, I finally was able to attend a performance by Dave. I purchased this album after the show.
This very much captures the feeling of being at the live show. Dave is a fabulous story teller and his dialogues flow very naturally in and out of his music. His playing is amazingly precise and stripped down to the simple acoustic and violin accompaniment it really shines.
If you enjoy his live shows, buy this album. If you enjoy this album, go to one of his shows.
If you think that the last few albums are "preachy", then you probably will not enjoy this one. One man's "preachy" is another's "insightful".
This CD captures the essence of Dave; witty, fun, insightful.......2003-05-14
I have garnered more fans for this great folk artist through this CD as David converses with the audience, lighting their souls with laughter, touching on childhood experiences with homage and capturing the emotions of the heart. If you are new to David Wilcox, I would recommend this CD and Eye of the Hurricane, though for me, Home Again CD with its "Burgundy Heart Shaped Medallion" will always remain my favorite.
If you like David Wilcox you will LOVE this CD!.......2003-04-08
The first time I heard David Wilcox was in a friend's car and listening to a C.D. of his music just didn't intrigue me. Then I heard him in this small college tavern called the Peanut Barrel in Bloomington, Indiana. I was hooked! He is lyrical, eloquent, and a gifted musician. I love his music and this C.D. has some of my favorite songs intertwined with some of his stories and musings that go along with the songs. It's like having your own personal concert! I've played this C.D. almost continuously in my car since I bought it a few weeks ago.
Real, Authentic Music.......2002-08-21
I can't say enough about this album. For those who are familiar with Dave's work this album will be very familiar. For those who are interested in getting aquainted with him, this may be the best way to invite him into your home. The recordings are warm and alive and consist of both songs and stories.
The thing that strikes me most about the album is how real it is. No pomp or glamour here. No boy bands or synthesizers or dance moves or nasty lyrics or the like are to be found on this album. Just a warm voice, beautiful, simple guitar and lyrics that will have you wondering just how did Dave know that about you.

Modern Celtic.......2006-08-07
Beth Pattersons music is excellent. Her mix of cajun and celtic styles (I am a huge Celtic Music fan), is awesome. Her writing style and musical talent complement each other very well. It is like listening to an ancient Celt write music from their experiences today. I couldn't be happier. Hope to see her in concert some day. It's a long drive to where she performs but I just might get on my bike and go!!
Even better live.......2006-04-23
I'll admit to some bias, since I am a friend of Beth's, but if she really sucked I wouldn't bother writing any review at all. Or dragging friends to her gigs whenever she's in my neck of the woods. Or catching her at pubs when I'm in New Orleans. Beth's an extremely talented musician with a great sense of humor, and both tend to come out best when she's in front of an audience. Sure, her studio work is damn good, but live is even better, so I'm quite happy she finally did a live album. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.

Customer Reviews:
The Joe Hill song collection.......2006-02-26
This is mostly a collection of the songs and poetry supposedly written by the legendary I.W.W. martyr Joe Hill. It is interesting more as an historical collection of the earliest songs of the I.W.W union movement than for its musical content. Much of music used in these songs where written by others. Joe Hill would change the original lyrics to promote the I.W.W. and its socialist movement, and call the so-called hated enemy names.
Humor and sing-alongs for working people.......1999-10-11
I had this record on tape for years and just about wore it out, so I was ecstatic to find it here on CD. The Wobblies' songs definitely take some shots at religion -- the sort of religion that promises "pie in the sky when you die" and advises the oppressed and exploited to wait until then to get some of it. But anyone who cares about making *this* world better needs this record.
Wobblies of the World Untie!.......1998-11-07
In some ways more of a document, this album would probably shock some people into fits. "The boss", the opening track, is, well, shocking for some people.
None the less, the song listing for this is incomplete, the title song is tehre, "sheep and goats", "casey jones the union scab", "bread and roses" and "The Popular Wobbly" are all here.
It's a collection of old Wobbly songs, and a pretty good historical liner on what a wobbly was.
Personally, I find much of the album refreshing, but I'm not typical, nor do I hold with the typical person's sanctity of religious matters.
If you're devout, it's probably going to make you twitch.
If you're not, this is a take on what happens when the common man goes chaotic.
Utah Phillips, as always, is great.

Album Description
"Good Tar" is a double-live CD and LaMotte's seventh album. Recorded during the summer of 2001 at various LaMotte concerts with audiences ranging from 80 to 800. The twenty songs include nine which are previously unrecorded, some older material and several on-stage stories. This disc captures LaMotte at his purest; solo with guitar and audience.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite like live, but a great collected works.......2006-03-01
I suppose if you've never made it to a concert this is pretty amazing. The conversations definitely add spice to the album, and it's very warm and happy, but you can't match a concert.
One the other hand, if you want to get started listening to David, this is one of the very best albums to begin with.
Great place to start if you are new to David's music!.......2004-07-28
This is a wonderful live collection of David's music. His humor and heart really shine through on these two discs. Give it a try!
Humurous and Serious: absolutely amazing!.......2003-04-06
David LaMotte -again- shows himself as an astonishingly gifted, and extremely funny (in songs like We Are Charlie's Angels) singer/songwriter! His anecdotes between songs make the double-live album simply AMAZING!
This might be -along with Corners- the best David Lamotte album there is right now!
Mindblowing Live Album!.......2003-01-28
David LaMotte's Good Tar CD is an as-close-to-perfect live album as possible. LaMotte's music is terrrific, combining thought-provoking, poetic lyrics with intricate music, and this music is presented at it's best - live! The sound quality is outstanding, some of the best sound I've ever heard from a live album. As an extra bonus, LaMotte's hilarious betweeen-song banter is included. This CD could be liked by most everyone - a fan of folk music, soft rock, instrumental music, comedy music, rock music, or just good music period. Don't be afraid - get this magnificent album from an incredible artist. The only thing that could make this album better is going to see David LaMotte perform these songs. All of LaMotte's performances are incredible experiences, as captured in this album. This CD is well worth the money, and will leave you without regrets. For, as LaMotte says in his first song on the album, "Deadline", there's "no time like the present" to get this album.
The true David LaMotte experience!.......2002-07-25
David is a wonderful folk singer. I have seen him perform live on several occasions and this CD set really captures the spirit of his shows.
