5 out of 5 stars British Folk Rock Zenith.......2007-05-25

It is very rare to be able to express your thoughts about a Work of Artists that Achieve Something as Beautiful or Timeless as this Music that is Presented here as "Fotheringay". First Released in 1970, it in it's self is best and purest Example of "British Folk Rock". This Record stands as such a Grand Achievement due to Sandy Denny. Less than a year after the release of Fairport Convention's groundbreaking "Liege & Lief", this was her Moment, and for one reason or another it was all but ignored by the Masses.

These Finely Crafted Songs (Five by Sandy) and Trevor Lucas (Two) Stand up as well as anything from the Traditional Songbooks that other Folk Rock Bands were Raiding. It is almost a contradiction to have Music this Powerful to be so Played in Such a Gentle Manner, But it DOES work and that is why "Fotheringay" is so Unique. And when this Band performs the Work of other Artists;(Dylan & Gordon Lightfoot) it Blends in so well you are led to Believe that Sandy or Trevor wrote these Gems as well. That said, my Favorite Track on this record was always "The Way That I Feel".

I do think this is the Best Work of Sandy Denny's Career. Fotheringay contains some of her very best Compositions, and what can you say about her Voice? She was the Best Singer of her Day... and this CD is the Best of the Best. This Music belongs in any Music Collection.

This Version of this Classic Contains Four Bonus Tracks of the Band Live In Concert. The Live Material Echoes the Greatness of the Studio Versions and the Last Song: "Memphis Tennessee" is a Rocker that Previews Ms. Denny's next Project "The Bunch".

If you Enjoy Music, This CD will Floor You...FIVE STARS !!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Denny........2007-05-11

I bought this album, finally, having pretty much exhausted all other Sandy Denny sources. I certainly wish I'd found it sooner.
If, like me, you are a fan of the Fairport Convention at their "What We Did On Our Holidays" and "Unhalfbricking" stage, then you will be mightily pleased with this album. In fact I would go so far as to say, that while it doesn't quite match up in terms of overall quality to the aforementioned albums, in terms of the Sandy Denny contributions, it may be that there is a greater concentration of superb material than can be found anywhere else (outside, perhaps, of a compilation album).

Sandy takes the lead on most of the songs (as you would both hope and expect) and the ones sung by Trevor Lucas suffer by comparison but are not terrible.
One odd thing is that on some of the tracks the guitar playing is so like that of Richard Thompson's that I found myself pouring over the CD booklet to see if he was there as a guest performer(he was not).

The sound quality is in keeping with what you would expect of the era and the packaging and presentation is good(although some more expansive liner notes would have been nice).

This is an excellent album and a must for anyone with an interest in Sandy Denny's music, and indeed, high quality music of the era.

5 out of 5 stars is that what you hear? the coming of the sea?.......2006-01-02

This is maybe my personal favorite English folk-rock album... beautiful songs, stunning arrangements, warm, enveloping production. The twin singing talents of husband and wife, Sandy Denny and Trevor Lucas. The utterly masterful, Clarence White-ish guitar of Jerry Donahue. A marvelously fluid rhythm section of Pat Donaldson on bass and Gerry Conway on drums. Near perfect covers of Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan. Arguably Sandy's most beautiful and evocative song, "The Sea," featuring a breathing, tidelike arrangement that raises the impact of the song to the point that it makes you cry tears of joy. And of course, Sandy's jawdropping performance of the traditional ballad "The Banks of the Nile," one of the greatest songs against the horror of war that will ever be written.

Essential stuff, with some nice live tunes tacked on the end including a tremendous version of Sandy's "Nothing More," where her rare gift for tapping the most literal, direct emotions with the most oblique and indirect lyrics is on full display. Get this immediately, turn the lights down low and pour yourself a glass of wine, and let the exquisite, unequallable sound of her soul wash over you.

If you think that's a laughable hyperbole then you haven't heard Sandy Denny, one of the most singular, gorgeous singers and songwriters of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Sandy & Trevor: A rare treat on a Wing & A Prayer.......2005-10-26

This is one of the finest offerings of the late '60s English music scene. The choice of songs, the precision playing of Jerry Donahue along with the strong rhythm section of Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson, plus the impeccable vocal phrasing and arrangements of Sandy and Trevor make this an impossible album to miss.

What struck me on first hearing this record at the time of its release in 1970, was the powerful anti-war song, Banks Of The Nile. If any one quality defined a song as a classic, it would have to be the eternal relevance of the lyrics. Sadly, the song is still relevant to this day.

Trevor Lucas's The Ballad of Ned Kelly, while probably incomprehensible to many people outside Australia (a European fansite contains an interesting, if baffling, translation), is a powerful tribute to an obscure anti-establishment hero. This is the finest version recorded.

All of Sandy's compositions are impeccable, and are among the best examples of her mighty talent.

Thanks should go to A Wing & A Prayer records for keeping this mighty album in circulation. Without companies like this, the treasures of popular song would be Nothing More.

4 out of 5 stars The logical followup to Fairport's UNHALFBRICKING.......2005-10-14

Following their wonderful UNHALFBRICKING album, Fairport Convention re-directed their music along a "trad. arr. Fairport" path, resulting first with the LIEGE & LIEF album which began a (mostly) downward spiral with each subsequent release. Fairport wouldn't sound *really* good again until 3/5 of Fotheringay joined Fairport in 1974. Sandy left Fairport after LIEGE and formed Fotheringay, a ramshackle outfit (need proof? Listen to some of their live stuff) which managed to capture a good part of the magic of the pre-fiddling Fairport. FOTHERINGAY is a freewheeling mix of Denny originals, Dylan & Lightfoot covers and a couple of excellent traditional tunes, picking up right where UNHALFBRICKING ended. Jerry Donahue's graceful and fluid lead guitar, along with the rock-solid rhythm section of Pat Donaldson & Gerry Conway provided terrific backing for Sandy & Trevor's vocals. FOTHERINGAY is the missing link between pre-LIEGE Fairport and Sandy's subsequent solo career and is highly recommended to fans of early Fairport.

The bonus tracks are nice but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Reissue and second Fotheringay album.......2004-08-23

This album has been finally reissued. The live tracks are a welcome addition although I am disappointed that the two Hannibal bonus tracks are out! There is no time constraint here (so little available from Fotheringay!). By the way, you should know that Fotheringay made a second album, which they never properly recorded for LP release (they broke up before that), but they did record them for BBC! A few years ago I bought a Japanese CD on Nightlife, which has all these tracks (7 or so). It is a worthwhile purchase if it comes into your way...

5 out of 5 stars bonus tracks.......2004-02-02

I`ve just had another look at that source and apparently there will in fact be three bonus tracks on the Fotheringay reissue, although it doesn`t say what they are.

5 out of 5 stars Soon to be reissued !.......2004-01-23

A reissue(possibly with bonus tracks??)of this album is due this coming summer. I got this information from a UK-based online shop that specialises in folk and folk/rock CDs. Fairport Convention`s Angel Delight, Babbacombe Lee, and Rosie are also due for reissue in the summer. The recently reissued Fairport albums(Liege and Lief, Full House etc.) have bonus tracks, so hopefully these latest ones will too.

5 out of 5 stars For goodness' sake will someone please reissue this?.......2004-01-10

A very brief review. Here is Sandy Denny, the Maria Callas of folk rock (brilliant, self-destructive, tragic), at her absolute peak. Tracks such as "The Sea" and "The Banks of the Nile" are among the best things she ever did, and indeed stand comparison in terms of all round performance and production with the best of anything being done at this time. And yet, the album is nigh on impossible to find other than at premium prices from specialist dealers. There's some mystery here because I think there would be a lot of money to be made by a good reissue. As it is I don't think my cassette version (grotty packaging, Australian?) will last out much longer!

5 out of 5 stars The one album Sandy Denny put out with Fotheringay.......2004-01-06

"Fotheringay" was the album Sandy Denny released after she left Fairport Convention, when that group decided to explore traditional English music more and Denny wanted to continue writing songs (the title comes from one of the first songs she wrote for Fairport). On this 1970 album Denny wrote four of the tracks, with "The Sea" and "Winter Winds" being the best of the quartet. There are also covers of songs by Bob Dylan ("Too Much of Nothing"), Gordon Lightfoot ("The Way I Feel"), and David Cousins ("Two Last Weeks in Summer") of the Strawbs, with whom Denny had recorded an earlier album. Ironically, the best track on the album ends up being the traditional song, "Banks of the Nile," a Napoleonic Wars-era story-song ballad, and very much in the style of "A Sailor's Life" and "Tam Linn" that Denny did with Fairport. In addition to Denny on Guitar and Piano, the group consisted of Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue on guitars, Pat Donaldson on bass, and Gerry Conway on drums, with everybody joining in on the vocals. The one serious complaint about the album would be the vocals by Lucas, which does not compliment Denny's sublime vocals, even when he is singing his own song, "The Ballad of Ned Kelly" (and even though the pair married shortly after this album was produced). But the album ends on a strong note, with Denny's expressive vocals on "Two Weeks Last Summer" and "Gypsy Davey," and serves as a potent reminder that she was the pre-eminent British folk singer of her generation. "Fotheringay" is not quiet as good as "Unhalfbricking" and "Liege & Lief," but its best moments match any on those classic Fairport Convention albums. Together, they make a nice Sandy Denny folk-rock group trilogy.
