With three albums and the successful Cry Cry Cry collaboration with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell under her belt (not to mention a cult following in the New England folk scene), Lucy Kaplansky could have consciously attempted to break out with wider acclaim and sales. Instead, she has turned in her most quiet, atmospheric, and even mysterious recording to date. In the wash of drummer Ben Wittman's Lanois-esque production--lots of reverbed guitar and moody percussion layers--Kaplansky sings of sins of flesh and soul, all the existential doubts suggested by sex, cities, and (as on the heartbreaking "Song for Molly") senility.

Kaplansky will never be the songwriter that peers like John Gorka or Ellis Paul are, but she's a fine interpreter with good taste in material, as demonstrated by her engaging takes on Julie Miller's "Broken Things," Steve Earle's "You're Still Standing There," and the Louvin Brothers' gospel gem "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night." --Roy Kasten

Did you know that Lucy is also a PhD Psychologist?? She is also one of the best folk singers in the world. :) This is new folk on an intellectual level, and far from brainless pop. I got interested in LK's music after discovering John Gorka about ten years ago. She has crafted her own style and doesn't hide behind the styles of others, something to be greatly respected!
The best tracks on this fantastic CD are the title track and "Crazy Dreams."

She has so much more to contribute to the music world. I hope she keeps growing. LK has tremendous talent. I hope to see her live some day.

I picked up this album when I was working at Newbury Comics based upon the performance at New Bedford's Summerfest by Lucy. I was not blown away and I was not utterly speechless. I was comforted by soothing vocals and little guitar lines that you miss the first time you hear the songs. I would play this cd almost every night over the course of that summer, soundtracking my falling in love with my girlfriend. If you want a top effort by a singer/songwriter, check this out. I did and I'm veddy veddy happy.

I stumbled upon LK in San Diego a few years ago, with time to kill on a business trip, simply wanting to visit a coffee house I had heard so much about (Java Joe's). Not knowing the area, I left early in the rental and found a clustering of people already waiting in line (a good sign, I thought). I had never heard LK, but I quickly assumed I was in for a treat as those in line (who had seen her before again and again and again) gave me the head's up. I was not disappointed----she was mesmerizing. I bought everything she had with her (four CD's up through Ten Year Night--the track she had on Nod to Bob, and many others, made that CD a special treat).

A half dozens shows later, including some cuts off the new Every Single Day CD, I was only more and more mesmerized, I was rabidly awaiting the release of the new CD.

Got it. First song is a killer. Then, unexpectedly, with each song, almost in a linear fashion, instead of more and more, I gradually found less and less.....

I can't imagine not going to see her live any chance I can (next in Pittsburg in a couple of months!), but going back to this CD has repeatedly elicited the same response...

The problem may be very simple: how can one follow-up Ten Year Night? THAT is the CD that captures LK more than any other.

Every Single Day is a good album, but only good, relative to LK in general. After many stellar live shows and Ten Year Night, this new CD had a lot to live up to....

This is Lucy Kaplansky's 4th and best solo album with guest appearances from Steve Earl, John Gorka, and others. Topics of songs she penned for this one range from the domestic violence of opener "Written on the Back of His Hand" to true human guilt, to the three generations of women and a wedding ring of "Molly's Song." Her own songs have a quality of observation of human nature that rings true.

Lucy Kaplansky began 20 or so years ago singing harmonies with Shawn Colvin in the Northeast folk circut. She is no Colvin clone, though, and is actually a more accomplished vocalist than her old partner. She came of age with fellow artist John Gorka, with whom she still often collaborates on stage. She left music for many years to complete a PhD and work as a psychologist. 7 years ago she returned to recording and touring on her own as well as being 1/3 of the super group Cry, Cry, Cry (Dar Williams & Richard Shindell). She is at the height of her talents when she harmonizes, and creates absolutely magical, spiritually trancendent moments in concert. A capable guitarist, and stunning interpreter of other's as well as her own compositions, she is a truth teller. Her voice is clear and perfect and unaffected. Perhaps her best, most beautiful recorded work to date is found on The Wayfaring Strangers' album "Shifting Sands of Time." Be sure to check out "High on a Mountain" and "Wayfaring Stranger" on that offering. She also appears on Nina Gerber's new album in a standout cover of a Nancy Griffith tune. She appears on "A Nod To Bob" a tribute album by various artists celebrating Dylan's 60th b-day, and on the Greg Brown trubute "Going Driftless" that raised money for breast cancer research.

Her cover of Julie Miller's "Broken Things" on Every Single Day is stunning. She is maturing rapidly as a songwriter, and as a performing musician she is a knockout! Be sure to also check out "Ten Year Night," a solid album which preceeded this one. Run, do not walk, to see this woman in concert, solo or with anyone. She is superb.

What a disappointment. The lyrics are sophmoric and the production shallow and trite. By the fourth or fifth song, I just want the words to stop, the music to stop even more. Beautiful voice, though, as always...makes it even harder for your ears to reconcile with such an awful presentation.

    I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

    The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.
