Fascinating concept.......2007-05-14
This is a collection on original songs that share a theme of wine in one form or another. It works surprisingly well. For those who do not know, Al Stewart is a wine afficianado in real life. The songs are quite varied. The opening song, "Waiting for Margaux", recalls "Almost Lucy" without being repetitive. The title, which references "Waiting for Godot," is typical AS in the way that it highlights the dimensions that underlie the straightforward narative. Franklin's Table, on the other hand, is AS in his historical mode. Other highlights include "The Night that the Band got the Wine" and the guitar work in "Down in the Cellars." This is one my alltime AS favorites (along with the sonicly stunning Rhymes in Rooms).
In Vino Veritas!.......2006-06-23
When I heard this album for the first time I was not sure of it. I was ready to relegate it to Chateau Rivage but with repeated play, I realize it has superior blending and cleverness and overall is a Grand Vin selection among Al Stewart recordings. The songs are interesting, different and good like a Chateau Pereguay Sauterne with Strawberries. Under a Wine Stained Moon is among quite a few tunes that are catchy and inventive. While it may not be the best Al has ever done it is designed for the Piano in a Piano Bar setting and contributes to the diverse creations that this talented songwriter so elegantly displays. Worth the price!
He plays the Glass Harmonica..........2005-07-22
I don't think anyone writes lyrics like Al. He is almost in a class by himself. This is a great album that wasn't distibuted in the U.S. but now can be purchased here on Amazon. Reading about his concerts shows that he seems to like to play "House of Clocks" in almost all his current concerts. This is a good song but there are alot of good songs on this. The wine metaphor used here is quite cleverly done. This is a very well put together album that's worth a listen. I enjoyed "Franklin's Table", "Down in the Cellar", "Turning It Into Water"...wait a minute..I enjoyed the entire album.
The concept and the music are incompatible..............2005-07-14
I'm not exactly sure what made Al feel impelled to enlist Laurence Juber as the producer of this project, but I must say very bluntly that it was a mistake. He cannot shoulder all of the blame however, because Al should have known, via his album Russians and Americans, that theme albums don't always work. Yes, I would have to admit that this work does have a Napa Valley cellar feel to it, but the songs are merely fair. I return to this cd to hear Millie Brown, but all else misses the mark in pacing and appeal.
Classic Al Stewart - Buy it!.......2005-06-11
I waited a long time to buy this because I had the irrational belief that I wouldn't like it as much as Between The Wars. To my surprise, Down in the cellar may be even better than that one. This is Al at his relaxed best, with the fabulous Laurence Juber again. The band is excellent. There is no Clive Davis telling Al to re-write The Year of the Cat for the umpteenth time. There is no saxophone on this cd at all (Thank God!) No, just wonderful guitars, wonderful piano, bass, drums, occasional violin etc. It's folk music folks, and it's what Al does best. And there is some amazing electric guitar playing as well on tracks such as Under a wine stained moon, tremelo guitar on Tasting History. Best of all, Al is at his story telling best on the comical The night that the band got the wine and Franklin's Table. The one song Al didn't write is Soho by Bert Jansch. It's a great song, reminiscent of songs like Last Time from Modern Times. This cd is so well put together, it's one of the best in Al's entire career. I waited mistakenly much too long to buy this wonderful cd. Don't make the same mistake, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Fun CD.......2004-02-09
It's probably fair to say that this is Susan Nigro's most popularistic CD. Both "Little" and "Tunes" from the title are aptly chosen. These certainly aren't monumental works, but fun, pleasant tunes. That's largely true of her other CDs too, but this one more so. In this case, that includes several cute, jazzy tunes, like "Take Five." If you're looking for profound works, this is not the CD for you, but if you want something light-hearted, this is it.
Speaking in generalities about Nigro's performance, it's pretty clear that she's a very capable performer, and this particular CD does a good job of showing off flashy technique, such as in Bozza's "Burlesque." Yes, I did say "flashy technique"; the contrabassoon is an amazingly agile instrument.
My only concern about Susan Nigro's performance here and in her other CDs regards her tone. It's a good tone to be sure, so I wouldn't let that dissuade you from buying her CDs. Still, it doesn't strike me as bassoon-family enough. Expecially at high volumes in the middle and low registers, it sounds a tad too saxophone-like for my personal tastes. A saxophone sound is fine, provided that it comes from a saxophone! Her upper-register sound, on the other hand, especially at lower volumes, is quite sweet and beautiful. The slow, lyrical middle section of that same Bozza "Burlesque" shows that well.
One of my least essential but most played CD's!.......1999-10-09
Turn up the bass response on your CD player for some good Brobdingnagian fun. Susan Nigro is a master of her big old instrument & it's good to see her step out from the bassoon section for this outing.
