Jonatha Brooke made her reputation as one half of the Story, a duo whose original folk songs were marked by witty wordplay and sumptuous pop harmonies. After she split with her partner Jennifer Kimball in 1993, Brooke released a solo album (misleadingly credited to "Jonatha Brooke & the Story") that replaced the qualities of her earlier work with a too-bald preachiness. Brooke seems to have learned her lesson, for her followup solo effort, 10 Cent Wings, is filled with the sort of sly phrases and lush pop arrangements that made the Story so enjoyable. At times Brooke stretches her literary conceits too far, but her keyboardist/producer/arranger/husband Alain Mallet always wraps her appealing melodies in quirky, thickened chamber-pop arrangements. On the best songs--most notably "Glass Half Empty" and "Last Innocent Year"--Brooke has recovered the momentum of a most promising career. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars I Love Her, and Here is Why.......2007-05-26

Jonatha Brooke is a good musician who sings with a lot of feeling and writes songs with an interesting texture to them.
The only song I really don't like on this CD is Genius or a Fool, but with excellent songs like Because I Told you so with its good lyrics and sweeet guitar, Annie, with that piano, and again, great lyrics, heck, all the other songs on the album, you can't go wrong.
Jonatha Brooke with her unusual voice really should be more popular than she is. Her song should be on mainstream radio stations, but what can you do but buy this CD and blast it in your car on a summer day?

4 out of 5 stars ahhhh....Jonatha, a breath of fresh air.......2007-03-13

Her music invokes the same feelings as Spring for me. Ahhhh.... open the window and let in some reality of fresh air and sunlight!

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 3 favorite all time singer/songwriters.......2006-10-16

Jonatha Brooke is extremely talented and a rare hidden gem out there in the large music world. Her voice is unique and her music is a mixture of pop and modern folk-type like Sarah and Suzanne Vega or Paula Cole. Along with Nicole Nordeman, K's Choice and Sarah, this makes up my favorite genre: Female lead, melodic, pop-folk with gifted songwriting.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!.......2005-01-11

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Period. It was given to me as a gift over 7 years ago and I have been giving it away in turn ever since. It is still as fresh to my ears today as it was when I first heard it and that alone is the testament to its artistic excellence. I am certain that these are among those extremely rare works that will never get old for me. I love all of Jonatha's work as she is truly an artist's artist in my opinion - but her efforts here are just masterful. Her ability to express herself with words, melodies, arrangements, and just plain emotional honesty truly set her apart on this album especially. I was prompted to write this review after reading another that disparaged 'Crumbs' as a poor arrangement. This song initially defined Jonatha to me - as the first time I heard it - I was completely blown away. Her approach was so new and fresh in trying to express her theme here that it just came across as tremendously powerful and affecting. 'Blood from a Stone' about her relationship with her mother is equally powerful. To me, the whole album is fabulous - but I guess this goes to show you that unfortunately, Jonatha is not for everyone. She is not trying to duplicate what has already been done - but instead, trying to leave her mark on the world and speak to people in a voice that hasn't been heard before - as all true artists do. I guess not everyone can appreciate that approach. If you are interested in hearing a distinct voice that has the power to affect you again and again every time you hear it, listen to this album - you can check it out on her website first for free if you want. Then listen to the rest of her work and treat yourself to a body of music that will last you a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant music and lyrics.......2003-12-31

I first heard Jonatha's music via her playing prior to Richard Thompson at Appel Farms in South Jersey and was absolutly wowed. I have not been disappointed since then. I bought several CD's and have yet to find something I don't like. These exceptional performances are not just done in the studio either. If you have the opportunity to see her live jump at it. She is great solo or with her band (I strongly suggest seeing both).Mitch.
