Cherish the Ladies are primarily known for their instrumental skills--nearly every member is a contest-winning musician--so it might come as a bit of a surprise that on The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone, 10 of the 13 tracks are songs. But the assured way with which the band delivers its sweet harmonies on the opening track ("The Broom of Cowdenknowes") proves the Ladies can sing as well as they can play their fiddles, flutes, and accordions. They've invited a host of guest artists to perform with them, including folk singers Luka Bloom, Tom Chapin, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger; instrumentalists fiddler Brendan Mulvihill, banjo picker Eric Weisberg, and Chieftains member and flautist Matt Molloy; and the legendary Irish balladeers the Clancy Brothers. In a particularly moving gesture, the six band members pay tribute to their families by playing a lovely version of "The Queen of Connemara" accompanied by their fathers and brothers. The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone is a departure from Cherish the Ladies' previous dance-tune-based recordings, but the quality of the singing is so good that you don't miss the jigs and reels. --Michael Simmons

couldn't be without.......2007-01-04
This is my second time I purchased this particular cd. I lost the first one and couldn't be without it. I just love these gals and this cd also has others on it that are super. great music.
Cherish The Ladies.....Everyone should cherish their lovely Celtic Music!.......2006-06-27
I absolutely love this album! I purchased my first copy about 2 years ago and played it over and over again because I love so many of the tunes and learned a few songs for the Irish Feis' and the Fleadh Ceol. I played this CD so much, I think I wore it out...so I recently purchased another copy in June, 2006. I love Deidre Connolly's voice (especially on Erin Gra Mo Chroi---Ireland Love Of My Heart)....just brilliant! Joanie Madden continues to amaze with her tin whistles....the music she creates is spectacular! All of the gals in Cherish The Ladies are incredible musicians...keep up the great music!
Make a date with the ladies!.......2006-05-05
A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Joanie Madden at the Savannah Irish festival. I'm sorry to say that it was my first time hearing her play, and while I'd heard of Cherish the Ladies, I wasn't familiar with any of their music. Hearing her live was my impetus for getting one of their CDs and I'm so glad I did.
This CD is a lovely collaborative effort with the Ladies and their friends, and it's entertaining and crisp from start to finish. From sentimental love songs like Bonny Blue-Eyed Nancy, to the tongue in cheek wit of The Mad Puck Goat, it's one of those experiences you have when you just feel lucky to be along for the ride. And hats off to their rendition of Down by the Glenside with Paddy Reilly. He really is one of the best ballad singers out there and he's a treat on this cut.
The Ladies are great. Don't miss them.
A few too many guest singers.......2004-06-09
I think there should have been more focus on the band, rather than guest performers. In general, I didn't like the guest singing performances, despite how famous the guys may be. The instrumental tracks are stellar, with all-star guests such as Liam O'Flynn and Matt Molloy. "Broom of the Cowdenknowes" is my favorite track. Great song, great vocals. "Erin Grá Mo Chroí" is a beautiful song very well-sung (the Dervish version on Midsummer's Night is also highly recommended). "Queen of Connemara" and "Jolly Beggarman" are other good songs. I didn't really like the arrangement of "An Poc Ar Buile", although it is still a good song. The other songs just didn't do it for me. But still definitely worth buying for any trad fan.
Compulsively listenable.......2003-10-01
I bought this Cd without ever having listened to a single note of the band's work. I had read a review in Sound and Vision, then the views here at Amazon, and I took a chance. I was not disappointed. Every song here is an absolute gem. The harmonies are magical, and the instrumentation will transport you. I play this disk again and again, and I think my wife is going to hide the CD if I play it at dinnertime once more. I promise you will not be disappointed. Buy this disk, and simply enjoy; it's magic, gorgeous, and worth any price.

Great Early Recording!.......2004-08-21
This is the early Clancy's and Makem at their best. It opens with a rousing "Bold O'Donahue", and gets better from there. "Rothsea-O" shows the acting ability of the group, and I'm only sorry a live version of this song isn't available.(?) "Marie's Wedding" is a typical, lillting Irish tune, and you can almost see the wedding as if you were there. "I Know who is Sick" is a great driving song, and gets your toes tapping. Finally, "Old Woman from Wexford" show the black humor common in old Irish tunes. In all, a great album.
Outstanding early Clancy Brothers /Makem recording.......2004-08-13
I bought this on LP when it first came out in the 60's. Over the years I have bought many more of their albums but I still consider this the best. Particularly outstanding (for me) is Marie's wedding, Mountain thyme, Holy Ground and Wild Colonial Boy. I believe that this was the second album they did for CBS ("Spontaneous performance" being the first..I think). It created a sensation when it came out; it seemed to be a major jump from their records on the Tradition label (their own) and the first one. Why doesn't CBS/Sony release this, and other, early ones on CD?
