No matter how good the music shop is, you can't buy the instrument that Dave Van Ronk plays. It's a voice. Van Ronk has what you might call a vintage throat, a rare antique that has collected every story that has passed his way in decades of folk singing. It is a scratched, raw voice--memorable, exciting, and suffused with the weight of experience. In this 1976 reissue, Van Ronk uses a simple acoustic-guitar-and-voice dynamic to sketch out the wisdom and world-weariness he found in traditional tunes such as "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" and "Down South Blues." His ragtime guitar renditions of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" and Jelly Roll Morton's "The Pearls" are brilliant reappraisals of enduring songs. His cover of Joni Mitchell's "That Song About the Midway" slowly courses through the labyrinth of a sad, wrecked life. This is a striking album, balanced with dark blues and sly humor. --Lois Maffeo

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Greatness personified .......2007-02-01
From a time when music had words and the words had meaning. Dave Von Ronk was one of the great folk singers of all time. His voice is unique and his words are truth. Where are the truth tellers when we need them??????
Dave Von Ronk.......2003-08-30
I first heard this album as a teenager in the 70's. I listened to it constantly and I'm happy to now own it on CD. Dave has a soulful sound that reaches inside of you and makes you want to sing along. I recommend these tunes to anyone who feels the need to moan along - it is great for the soul.
Van Ronk's masterpiece.......1999-02-27
One of the heroes of the New York and American folk revival, Dave Van Ronk is a supremely gifted singer and guitarist who was there to bridge the first revival (Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly) and the second (the one that produced Bob Dylan and transformed popular music) and who shows no sign of slowing down. Mediocre Van Ronk recordings are not exactly nonexistent, but they are rare. Sunday Street, finally available on CD after more than three decades, is surely not one of them. It may be his masterpiece, a fully realized, deeply affecting exploration of the various genres -- blues, ragtime, jazz, spirituals, Tin Pan Alley, Joni Mitchell -- that Van Ronk always manages to subsume under a single genre: Van Ronk music. It ain't necessarily pretty, and its sheer intensity may scare you now and again, but it'll shake you in the way art that is plainspoken and true scares you. The blackly comic title song, the CD's one original, takes off from the theme of Van Ronk's onetime signature song, "Willie the Weeper," but "Sunday Street" manages to stand on its own wobbly feet as a sad and hilarious tale of a drunkard's twisted vision of heaven.

Customer Reviews:
Well done album.......2007-03-30
This is a well done album that has multiple standout tracks such as "To The Woman," "Cindy," "Hey Lainie," and "Wait For You." This album is more rock and less acoustic than their previous album "Back In The Bottle" which I gave 5 stars.
Buddy Rocks!.......2003-03-25
"If you only buy one cd this year..." ...You need to buy more music! But seriously, no matter what you buy Buddy is a must for everyone's music collection. The new recording of Wait For You is awesome, and with Spring here, this is the cd to take outside and celebrate with, while getting 'Giddy In The Sun'.
MOST AMAZING DISCOVERY!.......2003-02-19
Over the past year, I have become a huge fan of TAMMANY HALL NYC's music. I first heard them on the HBO commercials before the SOPRANOS and SEX AND THE CITY. I bought their acoustic record, "back in the bottle" and really fell in love with it. Since then, I ordered "BUDDY" and I could not be happier. This record is very different from the other record, but still expresses the same heart. The songs are uptempo and good-natured. "FRIDAY, YOU'RE WITH ME" is now one of my favorites. Steve O'Reilly's voice is amazing. He has this incredible ability to evoke real emotional depth when he sings. It's like he is talking to me. His lyrics are poetic, but not too much. BUDDY is an amazing display of songwriting. "SULLIVAN STREET" rocks like no song I've heard in years and "HEY LAINIE" is perhaps one of the most endearing love songs of all time. This band has something really special. I am lucky I decided to look them up. I hope they stick around because there is no telling what they might do next!

Customer Reviews:
"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.
