The Story began as a duo of two Amherst College friends, Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball, but it was Brooke who wrote the songs, set the vocal arrangements, and took most of the lead vocals. So it's not a complete surprise that Brooke broke with her partner after a dozen years and recorded this project as Jonatha Brooke & the Story, retaining husband/producer/keyboardist Alain Mallet and guitarist Duke Levine from the previous recordings. Unfortunately, the new format exposes the severe limitations of Brooke's voice, which is thin in tone and shrill in the upper register.
Plumb is dominated by songs of heartbreak and recrimination over a relationship that is over; they may or may not be about Kimball, but the bitterness of cuts such as "Nothing Sacred" and "Is This All?" emphasizes the prickliness of Brooke's singing. She needs a vocal partner to fill in the bare patches in her range and to lend some resonance to her lyric themes. The only vocal duet on "Plumb" pairs her with long-time admirer Bruce Cockburn on "War," and it's the album's most successful musical moment, even if the lyrics consist of rather predictable antiwar sarcasm. --Geoffrey Himes

Tiffany Arbuckle Lee (aka Plumb) is somewhat of an enigma. She doesn't constantly grace the covers of magazines or music trades, yet her art is highly regarded in Christian (and beyond) music circles as both a songwriter and artist. She draws strong vocal comparisons to Dido and Amy Lee of Evanescence, yet it was the latter's own admission that her style is modeled after Plumb. Chaotic Resolve, Plumb's fourth studio release, is yet another outstanding testament to the gifts of this amazing young woman. Proving her lyrical prowess, Plumb aptly captures her essence on "Motion" when she sings, "Do I Make You Feel Uneasy/Do I Break Your Stupid Rule/Cause I Do Not Fit Your Idea/Of A Beautiful Girl." Therein lies the beautiful paradox of Plumb's art; she molds elements of rock, pop, electronica, and metal together and does so while singing about some difficult subjects like physical abuse, alienation, and depression. "I Can't Do This" and "Better" are telling examples with Plumb's edgy rock mixing strangely well with strings from the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Give credit to producer Matt Bronleewe--an original Jars of Clay member, if you didn't know, and a fine musician in his own right--who has worked from the beginning with Plumb, and wraps her music together in a stunning way. For long-time fans, you'll appreciate popish tracks like "Blush (Only You)," "Real Life Fairytale," and "Sleep," which sound like extra takes from the brilliant Candycoatedwaterdrops. The stark and majestically beautiful "Cut" showcases Plumb's wonderful voice, and don't miss how she soars with eagles on this dramatic song. --Michael Lyttle

Absolutely Awesome!.......2007-07-31
This CD is filled with original splendor, words of praise, and a definite commitment to advancing the grace of Jesus Christ for the blessed listener. I bought this CD because I could never hear "I Can't Do This" enough when it was played on our local Christian radio. I was hoping the rest of the CD would be just as good. I was not disappointed.
Let's take a look at what PUMB has to offer:
Track #1 BLUSH - Talk about a song that any husband would love to have dedicated to him...this is it. What makes this song so amazing is PLUMB's beautiful voice on the chorus parts. When we first love God, we are able to love our significant other with that unbelievable love Hollywood spends billions to recreate on the silver screen. This kind of love causes humans to blush with purity and commitment.
Track #2 I CAN'T DO THIS - This is a song that sounds like Evanescence gone Gospel! I absolutely love this song, the music behind the vocals, the message, and PLUMB's ability to create such a powerful tune. Have I mentioned I really like this song?
Track #3 REAL LIFE FAIRY TALE - Can life really be like a fairy tale? I believe it can be. When people love from the top down and the bottom up, we experience amazing happiness and joy - a joy that seems unexplainable. Happy endings do happen - this song is about that possibility and that reality.
Track #4 BETTER - Evanescence with Jesus returns...I'm only joking, PLUMB, so please don't be angry. Wow, I believe this song is about overcoming evil with good and the Jesus-character such battles can buildup in our hearts. This CD is turning out to be homerun after homerun...good thing for me, since I purchased it!
Track #5 MANIC - The first confusing song on the CD, but even it has that spiritual tug-o-war between good and evil feel to it. There's just no stopping PLUMB's ability to compile great music on a CD!
Track #6 CUT - All I can tell you is this - just hearing PLUMB sing "I AM NOT ALONE" out loud the way she does in this song was worth the entire cost of the CD! What a fantastic voice!!!!!!!!!
Track #7 BITTERSWEET - Great start, unique style, and there is just no guessing where this song is going to go as you listen to it. It is indeed a great thing to have the power of grace pour over you - and this song is about that feeling of love we feel when we embrace the greatest love of all...
Track #8 GOOD BEHAVIOR - I have to admit, I have no idea where this song is coming from or going to, but it is catchy and exciting. So PLUMB is still riding a perfect wave on this CD.
Track # 9 MOTION - PLUMB has morphed into Lindsay Lohan and created the perfect dance song! Seriously, I could really see me dancing to this tune...as long as no one could see...
Track # 10 I HAVE NOTHING - A rocking good tune that accurately describes the way we come into this world and the way we leave it. Without the salvation God has brought us, we truly have not a thing. Good rock song and message and addition to this spectacular CD!
Track # 11 JEKYLL & HYDE - "You remind me of a cigarette"...not quite sure even a Saturday Night Live skit would start off a song spoof with such an amazing stretch of the imagination. Quite frankly, this is the only song that didn't cause me to celebrate my amazing purchase. This is the only song on the CD I have ever skipped over.
Track # 12 SLEEP - Anyone who cannot relate to this song has led a sheltered life. Everyone has a day where they just aren't sure they want to get out of bed in the morning. This song is about our dazed and confused (without drugs) times in life. Nice pace to this song. It's like PLUMB is just telling us a story with a little bit of background music. Another homerun!!!!
#13 DAMAGED - Freaky start to this one. This is also one of those songs that seems so original and unique it is hard to explain. We are all damaged - and this song reminds me that no matter how hard we try, we cannot rely on anything than the forgiveness Jesus has brought us! We can never make ourselves undamaged with our own works.
#14 PRAY FOR ME - Fast-paced reminder of what we need to do for each other. Pray for me...and I need to pray for you...and so the story goes. Man, I love this song!
Before I finish this review, I must point out that I wish I had more time and space to continue on about how good this CD is, but I don't. So, please consider that I could write for another 24 hours about what a pleasure this CD has been in my life. Add it to your CD collection - you won't be sorry!
See ya next review!
I love this album better than the self titled "Plumb" CD!.......2007-06-06
I am a huge fan of Christian music, my favorite type would be Christian rock, and I like this CD by Plumb. I have her other self titled CD "Plumb" and it's not as great as Chaotic Resolve, I first heard of Plumb when I saw her music video "Cut" on SkyAngel channel and I was hooked to that song and so later on I bought her cd and I love this CD better than the other one. Some other good songs on this CD are, "I can't do this", "I have nothing", "Good behavior", basically most of the songs on this CD are really good. I highly reccomend this album!
Beautiful vocals.......2007-05-14
As a fan of modern rock and hard rock music I found nothing special from an instrumental point of view but Tiffany Arbuckle Lee's vocals are something else. Most of the songs on the album did not suite my tastes, but the few that did are great (I Can't Do This, Better and Cut). Without those 3 songs I would've rated Chaotic Resolve with 2 stars. It might have been wiser to download those 3 on iTunes if you can. My other complaint is the fact that the lyrics deal with shallow themes.
My Favorite Album of Plumb.......2007-05-12
Chaotic Resolve surpasses CandyCoated. I find the tracks in the album are songs which everyone can relate to. It's the best one yet by Plumb...I like it better than any of their albums... well done, Tiffany!
If you're looking for great music..........2007-04-29
...you've definitely come to the right place! I stumbled across this CD on iTunes several weeks ago, and I have been completely blown away. This album is fantastic, nothing short of amazing, and a breath of fresh air. Her voice is truly unique and beautiful, and the music compliments her so well. What makes this CD is the lyrics--deep, moving, and involved. She has brought up issues that most people never talk about or even consider, including self-harm. Making "Cut" was a bold move, and it has been one that has truly paid off. It has raised awareness on the subject, and it has also created a platform for it to be openly discussed and talked about. It saddened me to read a past reviewer's comments of "Cut=boring." If you are looking for surface-level songs, this CD is probably not for you. I think it was a courageous move for Plumb to create a CD which highlights the struggles and sufferings of many ("Manic," "Cut," "Damaged," "I Can't Do This," etc) while also drawing into the magical moments in life ("Blush" and "Fairytale").
This entire album is refreshing, due in part to the courageousness and openness Plumb dedicated to the subjects on this album as well as in the musical talent displayed. This is definitely one of the best finds I have come across in a long time. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for something they can relate to and something that is honest.

Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable Voice.......2006-12-29
This woman can sing. It's too bad, for the world's ears sake, that she is semi-focused on singing Christian music. Christian music doesn't get as popular as, I guess, "normal" music. It would be a benefit to the musical world if she were more mainstream because the singers out there today are downright aweful and embarrasing.
Beautiful ....Indeed.......2006-08-15
Tiffany Arbuckle Lee is one of the most gifted artist I have ever heard. She writes and sings her own songs with a passion that will move you to.....tears?Sorry,I'm a guy but when I heard "Taken" Wheww!! I was blown away. There is way too much Christian music out there that sounds "manufactured" and not much else, fortunatly for us,Plumb hasn't fallen prey to that trend a la Mercyme,Third Day and Newsboys to name a few.Plumb is different and I respect her for that, she reminds us that we live in a fallen world and not all is rosy and perfect.I hope to hear much more from this uniqually talented young woman.Enjoy!
Good Stuff.......2006-06-25
If you like Plumb's music, try Brooke Fraser "what to do with the daylight" is her debut cd, that was released a couple of years ago in New Zealand (her birth place). Both Plumb and Brooke have proven you don't have to write trashy songs and compromise your beliefs just to get a hit song.
Plumb is like a fine wine............2005-11-20
Since I discovered Plumb a little over 3 months ago thanks to the film Brokedown Palace I've been almost infactuated with their music. I like how they, now she, blends rock and pop so seemlessly. Plumb is a band I'm in no way ashamed of liking. Where the popular people of pop music say they're doing it for the music you know they're not. But in Plumb's case, I do feel that she loves what she's doing. I've heard the Greatest Hits CD, candycoatedwaterdrops, and now Beautiful Lumps Of Coal, and I have to say that in all of those CDs I've yet to hear a song I don't like. Once I heard that Tiffany and the rest of the band split leaving only Tiffany to claim the name of Plumb, I figured the 'solo' releases wouldn't be as good, but boy was I wrong. If anything she's become more sure of her voice and the music has taken a more decidedly rock edge to it. With both of these reasons, there is no reason to not run out and buy this right now.
Free starts the CD off on a high note. I feel when a CD starts off this good the rest will follow in it's path. And my notion is proven right in this case. This song quickly measures up to Plumb's earlier greats such as Late Great Planet Earth. So you know you're in for a wonderful ride from the get-go. Boys Don't Cry is quite possibly some of Tiffany's strongest material to date. It's a touching song if I've ever heard one and you feel as if you can relate to every word she says. Walk Away, while sounding completely upbeat, is actually a sad song. But in the end it sounds as if it's more of a declaration if anything. Taken is a beautiful ballad-type song. While not being a highlight, it sets itself apart with a lush melody and great vocals. Nice Naive And Beautiful is the best song on here. I don't think anyone could say something bad about this song and be able to stand behind it. The way I see it, Tiffany puts herself in someone elses shoes and tells their story. Anyone who can do that successfully, such as she has done, is a good songwriter because that's not easy. Real is a song any person with feelings will be able to identify with, especially women. Yet another great song. Go is an appropriate ballad closer. After 10 songs of mostly upbeat melodies, it's a great choice to save a beautiful ballad for last. Go is really a ballad that people could take notes from, there's excellent use of strings, a perfect backdrop of music, everything is executed as it should've been.
My favorite songs on here are Free, Boys Don't Cry, Walk Away, Nice Naive And Beautiful, and Real. Plumb plays Christian music the way it should be played. They don't beat you over the head with excerpts from the Bible, they just slide in vague references. While I hate to say it, Plumb has gotten a bit better since the band left, Tiffany has really had the chance to shine and I hope to see wonderful things from her in the future.
Do you know what "Navel-Gazing" is?.......2005-10-08
My writing teacher uses that term to describe when a writer is totally lost in themselves. Tiffany Arbuckle-Lee is almost all about herself. It's evident in this CD. Some artists are capable of writing lyrics that are accessible to other people. Mrs. Lee has always struggled with this in her music, and she's nearly lost the battle BLoC. Were it not for "Nice, Naive & Beautiful," "Unnoticed" and "Real" I could say she's ALL about herself.
Wouldn't it be nice if Christian Artists were all about Jesus? (Sorry to be simplistic and naive.) I would be more impressed if Mrs. Lee worked harder at the "Christian" and backed off of the "Artist" thing a bit.
Most of the songs I sit and try to read the lyrics and figure out what they're really about. I don't have the decoder ring, I guess. She's so vague and cryptic and cerebral sometimes that it doesn't make sense. (At least with an unsaved artist, we could blame the drugs!) Seriously though, she should work on this aspect of her writing.
I don't want to tear this apart, because I really was eager to get this CD. I liked her "candycoatedwaterdrops", despite its vaguery. But it seems that where that last CD was a bit vague and a bit secular (let's be honest) this CD is opaque and completely removes Christ. Good luck with that...
I disagree with the other reviewers who say her Christianity is evident. They see what they want to see. Truth is, her first song on this album, is an angst-ridden taunt to the music industry and record label who dumped her on her backside after her last CD (admittedly, that was a dumb move--she's unique, beautiful, and very talented--she has what it takes.) It's just not evidence of the Spirit at work in her life. Especially to give it the preeminence of song #1. "Hold Me" is just NOT even moral, unless the context is marriage.
The other issue I'll address, is "Nice, Naive & Beautiful." It appeals to a female audience who's had a hard life, and that's noble. But just telling someone who struggles with abuse self-loathing or bitterness, "There's life out there; choose it!" is not the answer. If I had one chance to give a message to someone broken and abused, I'd introduce them to the power of Jesus Christ in their lives. Not just tell them to snap out of it. Healing is not making something beautiful out of the lumps of coal that life throws at us. Healing is trusting that the Saviour knows and is in control of our lives, that he loves us and wants to give us "beauty for ashes, strength for fear, gladness for mourning, and peace for despair." But I'm no therapist...
Okay, the positives. The photography, the color scheme, the artwork and design integration on this CD are stupendous! Especially the rooftop set. Enviable work. If I could cut "Taken" and "Hold Me" and add them to "candycoatedwaterdrops" I would have never had to buy this CD. They are by far the best songs here. RAVE! RAVE! RAVE! Musically, lyrically, emotionally (but not spiritually, alas) you just can't say enough good about these two.
So, anybody want to buy my copy of the CD?

There shall be no sophomore slump here. Plumb's Candycoatedwaterdrops is one of the better modern-rock outings in the world of contemporary Christian music. As with their self-titled debut in 1997, Plumb embrace programming and loops on their second recording. However, this time singer-songwriter Tiffany Arbuckle steps up in the mix and takes center stage, making the band's sound all too human. "Late Great Planet Earth," "Here with Me," and "Solace" testify that Arbuckle and the band can certainly shake the walls. Songs like "Phobic" offer a counterpoint with a dreamy and lush backdrop. Producer Matt Bronleewe is another reason why Candycoatedwaterdrops stands tall, as he balances technology with pop sensibilities ("God-Shaped Hole" and "Worlds Collide: A Fairy Tale"), not to mention contributions from the London Symphony Orchestra. Well written, well produced, this one's a keeper. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Staggering! I was blown away! Now my favorite album!.......2006-07-08
Christian music has come a very long way in the last 20 years. It used to be a joke. While wanting to proclaim my faith, as a recording engineer, I was embarrassed to listen to it as it was almost silly. That is all changed and the quality of the message and the quality of the music is as good, if not better, than the secular varieties. So while I have come to expect higher quality Christian music, this album knocked my socks off. The first song, "Late Great Planet Earth" is nothing sort of amazing. It has a Led Zepplin "Kasmir" flavor with complex layers of rhythms creating tension and resolution. The band is tight and Tiffany's vocals and are both mysterious and satisfying. If you only want one Plumb album, this is it! I wish I could give it 6 or 7 stars...
Serves as a justifiable 'Greatest Hits'.......2005-11-08
After hearing Plumb's Greatest Hits release, I figured there'd be no reason for me to buy any further CDs from them seeing as how that was such a great disc. I eventually wanted to hear 'new' stuff from them so I purchased candycoatedwaterdrops. I didn't pay much attention to the tracklisting past Late Great Planet Earth since that is my favorite song by Plumb. Once I did look, however, I was amazed at how many wonderful songs are included. Everything from Here With Me to Damaged is on here, basically over half of the Greatest Hits disc. Plumb mixes so many genres without even trying. One song will be pure pop, the next will have a subtle hip hop influence, and the next will venture into rock. Any band with that kind of range, whether they want to or not, will draw attention to themselves.
The first three tracks, Late Great Planet Earth, Stranded, and Here With Me, have always been some of my favorite tracks by Plumb. Each is lyrically strong, particularly LGPE, and each seems to cover a different mood. What I really like about this CD is that it seems as though every song on here could be called a hit. Lie Low and Phobic are two of the most relaxing songs you'll soon hear and God-Shaped Hole is as catchy as you'll get. It even resembles early Avril Lavigne. Solace, next to LGPE, is the highlight of this record. This is the other rock-esque track on here. There's really not a thing about this song not to like. If you had to pick a low point on this CD it would probably be Worlds Collide: A Fairy Tale. It's a good song in every right, but following such an amazing line-up of songs is no easy task. Basically, it's a good song, but in comparison, it falls short. If you're in the mood for a fairly intricate soothing song, look no further than Brokedown Palace's anthem, Damaged. It brings to mind a rainy day, watching the rain trickle down the window. candycoatedwaterdrops seems like a song you'd hear in a lounge with dim lighting sang by a gorgeous woman. So no complaints on that. The hidden track, if you want to call it that, is horrible. While parents will find it 'cute' I find it a waste of 30 seconds. All it is is a little girl singing a song that they teach you in church. But no real love lost on it.
My favorite songs are Late Great Planet Earth, Phobic, Solace, Damaged, and candycoatedwaterdrops. This is a wonderful release with amazing vocals, thanks to Tiffany Arbuckle. While it would be hard for anyone to follow up such a flawless CD, Plumb did accomplish the seemingly impossible. Even if you're not a fan of Christian music, I feel that the religious themes are so under the collar that you'll not even notice. Definitely give this band a chance.
even if you're not a Christian.......2005-10-08
This album is in my top 20 list. I've played this for many many people, none of whom are even remotely christian and everyone has absolutely LOVED it.
It's progressive, slightly funky, and definitely rockin with wonderful lyrics, mostly of the "uplifting" kind.
One word of 'warning' however; the song "Damaged" is not only depressing it's ridiculously addictive. At least for women, I think. Every woman I've played that song for has gotten their own copy and confessed later to playing the one song over and over and over... as did I. The song is about child abuse - physical and sexual - and I believe for anyone who has ever been a victim the song has a cathartic healing power to it that can't be ignored. Ms Arbuckle has said that she has been told by quite a few people that "Damaged" has greatly helped them. Give it a serious listen and find out why.
If you are wavering about this CD, at least buy it for "The Late Great Planet Earth" and "Damaged". You won't be sorry.
A unique gem in Christian Rock .......2005-02-09
It is very rare to find an awesome album in Christian music such as this one, due to the nature of the genre and the limited horizons and paths a band in this style have available to follow and the pretty much delimited way of thinking and a number of factors that involve Christianity is natural that a not only an album but even a band achieve in musical terms what Plumb have achieved , create an incredible album such as this, easy to assimilate for Christians and not practitioner Christians, and even not Christians at all, and is good to realize that this genre can be reasonably open minded and that take advantage of technical resourses and experimentation and opening new options for songwriting is not such a betrayal for Christian principles , songs take several subjects such as love, friendship, care for the planet and of course love to Jesus, all this in a very well planned balance, good for Plumb along with other great bans like Jars of Clay are directly responsible for the evolutions of Christian music wich maybe is not for the mases but it has quality for its own rigth
HM
Music with heart!.......2004-09-30
Tiffany Arbuckle Lee or PLUMB definitely has something to boast. Not just her inherent talent in singing but in songwriting as well. Every song in this album will touch anyone on whatever he/she is going through. I just love the way she sings because every note seems to be coming from the deepest of her emotion. I love contemporary christian songs and defenitely, this album is worth a place in your cd shelves.

I cannot find myself...anymore.......2007-06-12
Gretchen's second full-length effort, In The Mean Time, is admittedly a lot better than their debut on a few fronts but they still stumble in a few of the same potholes as before. Mia does sound better this time around (better production probably has something to do with it) and the band feels a bit more fleshed out as well. However, it does sound like they really put a lot of effort into In The Mean Time and it shows throughout.
I really enjoy Mouth Full Of Nails, don't get me wrong. Some of Gretchen's best songs are found on that very CD, but if you're looking for consistency In The Mean Time is where it's at. Two songs into MFoN and you hit a speed bump. That doesn't happen on this CD, if anything there might be a song that isn't that amazing but has a part that you just fall in love with. This is a bit surprising actually, usually a band never tops their debut but Gretchen has...quite easily at that.
Gretchen put their best foot forward by opening with Fading, a powerful opener with a chorus that will be stuck with you for days. After that if you want hard rock, you got hard rock (Breathe, Zion, Don't Wanna Be, and Passion), if you want slower, more melodic, you got that as well (In The Mean Time, Let It Go, and Every Moment). Gretchen pull off the 'power ballad' really well as seen in Let It Go and Every Moment. The latter of the two goes down as one of the CDs best tracks as well.
My favorite songs are Fading, Breathe, In The Mean Time, Don't Wanna Be, and Every Moment. With this big of a leap in quality from one CD to the next I'm downright excited to see what they bring to the table with their next release. It's always nice to see a band that looks out for their fans so much and that's exactly what Gretchen does, so for that reason alone I look for them to succeed. If that makes no difference to anyone besides me though, the music speaks for itself.
Move Over Evanescence! There's A New Female Fronted Rock Band In Town! Gretchen Is Gonna Take The World By Storm!.......2007-04-29
That's right I said move over Evanescence. Gretchen is where it's at. This band has something special and is gonna take the world by storm. 'In The Mean Time' is an awesome rock album with something for every rock, alternative, goth, christian and metal fan. Songs that are stand outs are the tracks 'Fading', 'Daisy Chain', 'Zion', 'Don't Wanna Be', 'Breathe' and 'Passion'. This CD is worth every penny one will spend on it. So what you waiting for order 'In The Mean Time' by Gretchen and while your at it pick up their debut CD 'Mouth Full Of Nails'. For more info about the band and their music check out [...].
Potential...not yet fully realized, but a talented singer and some fun songs.......2007-03-15
I had hopes before listening to In the Mean Time, because I enjoy female-fronted gothy or hard rock. I grew up with Pat Benatar and Heart, and I fell in love with Evanescence even before they went superhot on the charts, and I have a lesser appreciation (but still enjoyment) of Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation.
In Gretchen's case, the group has passion and ability, but the music is predictable and there's nothing particular standout. They are an adequate band that offers some good listening for fans of moody rock with feminine presence. But I kept hoping for the musicians to do something that knocked my socks off or for the lead singer to really reach and soar. I didn't get there.
"Diamonds", especially, proves particularly unimpressive, downright boring, despite the lyrics sure to please Christians.
"Daisy Chain" opens up with some nice energy and a faster-pace, but then turns totally conventional and predictable. Still probably my favorite on the cd, just cause you got good vocals and fun energy. "I don't wanna be your daisy chain around your neck/ You loved me once, and then you forget." Ah, sorta forgettable lyrics here. But punchy and likable.
"Know You" seems to promise a darker turn, moody and the vocals a bit petulant at first, then strengthens up, but the musicians aren't up to the task (or ingenuity) of surrounding and lifting the vocals. They disappoint, even though the lead singer does a creditable job of expressing herself. The guitar work needs to meet the greater challenge of Mia's vocals.
"Breathe," pumps up the tempo, but at every point where you think--ah, here they'll take off--they don't. Youthful energy is there, passion is there in the vocalizing, and it's a song many will like, I'm sure, and one of the funner ones on the cd. I still kept wishing there was a really live and kicking guitar here to duel and ally with the vocals.
"Fading" starts out promising (and very Evanescence-ish), and one hopes for it to work out with verve, and some verve does come to the fore. The singer, Mia, stretches up with her voice and doesn't bobble in the pleading chorus. Nice. It's an enjoyable song, but a total copycat, and at no time does it break out and give itself its own, unique sound. It's still a respectable performance. "I"m fading inside, lately I cannot find myself."
And that last bit, "I cannot find myself" is a problem I see for Gretchen's debut.
I'll keep my eye (ear?) on this group. GRETCHEN may simply need time to mature into their own unique sound and to experiment with fresher, more complex interplays of instruments. I have hopes, because I see the potential there.
I would disagree with the comparisons with The Benjamin Gate--a band that had some truly outstanding songs that caught your attention and hung on and vocalizations that felt fresh on several tunes. (Although in the more reaching, higher levels of her voice, yes, Mia reminds me of BG's gal singer.) I do see faded echoes of Evanescence, but without the soaring power of Evanescence (particularly on that outstanding debut record of theirs).
For now, GRETCHEN impresses me with its basic foundation and potential: They're promising but need to go to the next levels beyond the semi-copycat sound that hasn't found its true, deep, surprising footing. Yet. And I do think the singer is very good. I enjoy her voice and she outshines the songs and the other musicians.
I'll keep watching and listerning for their breakthrough, which I truly hope comes...and comes soon. This gal hasn't met her needs or quota of gal-goth-rock.
THIS CD IS GREAT OUT OF THE GATE............2007-01-04
This Hard Rocked Edge Sound grab me right away. Great female vocals and awesome band behind it. Some music takes time to grow on me but this one pulled me into it at the very first listen. I am looking forward to their next endeavor.
In the Mean Time.......2006-03-24
This band rocks. If you like Pillar or Skillet this has a simular sound. Only difference is it has a female singer. This can also be compared to Benjamin Gate with more of an edge. Only 4 stars because only a few really rocky songs that I like. Gretchen has upside potential. Hopefully they continue releasing cds. If they keep being produced by Travis Wyrick they can't go wrong. All they need is to tour with a couple larger name bands to get their name out. I'd be about the only one at the show to see them.

GREAT!!!.......2006-12-15
Another great diverse album from Miss Tiffany Arbuckle Lee. The first album I got from her was Chaotic Resolve. Well after listening to this, I didn't know if I was listening to the same person. Let me tell ya, Chaotic Resolve blows this one out of the water!!! The bad points on this album are that her voide doesn't have that amazing depth to it, the music isn't as dark (which I like) and "Willow Tree", I SOOOOO dislike this song!!! Here are my ratings:
"Sobering" = 4.5/5 = Very good start, the chorus is a little short though.
"Who Am I?" = 4.5/5 = Another good one, but not one that makes your jaw drop either.
"Unforgivable" = 5/5 = An amazing song! Great lyrics and enjoyable to listen to.
"Endure" = 4/5 = Nice and soft, love it!
"Willow Tree" = 2.5/5 = EW!!!!
"Concrete" = 10/5 = The best song on the album! WOOT WOOT!
"Crazy" = 4.5/5 = Very good, but she says crazy one too many times.
"Pennyless" = 3/5 = Another boring song.
"Cure" = 4.5/5 = Very good. Pretty cool and solid.
"Send Angels" = 5/5 = Hauntingly beatiful, this may actually be the best!
"Pluto" = 4/5 = You can't here her vocals very well, but it's ok.
If you've bought Chaotic Resolve and planning on buying thsi one, be in for a surprise. It's good overall.
He couldn't even recognize the frail and injured man that he'd become.......2006-09-18
Mixing religious teachings with great music is something few bands can accomplish successfully. All too often they end up beating the word of God into you, like it or not. Then there's Plumb. If you didn't previously know this was a Christian band you'd never guess it by listening to their music. Every lyric could be put into something significant that's happened in your life or someone else's.
With a gift for writing intelligent lyrics that can be interpreted in so many different ways you might think that's the only thing this band has going for them. That is entirely untrue though. The band (now sadly departed) has a knack for creating an almost industrial feel in some songs. When the song calls for a more upbeat radio-ready sound they're right there ready for that as well. But as good as they are it really is Tiffany Arbuckle that sets this band apart from others. With a voice that can range from tearjerkingly gorgeous to harsh and gritty at the drop of a hat, I stand firm when I say no other Christian act can hold a candle to her.
After looking and anticipating hearing this CD for so long it's only understandable that I'd have high hopes going in. Those hopes were met but after hearing the 'best of' that they put out I've heard a majority of these songs. So I think the songs not featured on that are much better. Willow Tree, for example, is so beautiful that it easily surpasses over half of Plumb's catalog (this coming from a huge fan). Concrete is a nifty darker song complete is a great riff throughout and excellent lyrics. Cure is a departure from the rest of the CD with distorted vocals and an extremely downplayed beat. Nevertheless it's a great track. Send Angels, quite possibly the most ambitious track of Plumb's career is also the most desolate, eery one. The beginning is hauntingly beautiful and relaxing, I wish they would've left it at that but they fade out and come back with an upbeat almost danceable ending. I still enjoy this song to no end though.
My favorite songs are Who Am I?, Willow Tree, Concrete, Cure, and Send Angels. While Plumb refined their sound, and even perfected it, with future releases, I still can't help but hold their self-titled release at the top of their catalog. I think they basically own the Christian music scene (though they get NO recognition for it), so anything they do I will inevitably say is better than others. But with their first CD they show that their not infallible to a slip up. New to Plumb? If you can find it, start here.
Best of Artist.......2006-04-18
Their first effort was easily their best. The rest of the material is good, and this one sounds nothing like the rest of the albums... while the rest sound mostly the same. Definitely Michelle Branch meets Garbage... and I'd actually take this album over Garbage. Where Plumb sounds closer to Michelle Branch, they still sound good, but give me The Spirit Room.
First 7 tracks are very strong... ends kind of flat, although Send Angels is pretty popular with some people.
1 Sobering (Don't Turn Around) (5 of 5)
- Possibly the best song on the album... great intro. Was the band's theme intro for a while touring.
2 Who Am I (4 of 5)
- Nice dreary sound. The vocals would've sounded better with less of an echo.
3 Unforgivable (4.5 of 5)
- addicting bass line.
4 Endure (4 of 5)
- soft, poppy... but a nice listen
5 Willow Tree (3.5 of 5)
- lyrically strong... kind of drags... but the lyrics make it worth the listen
6 Concrete (5 of 5)
- features backing vocals from the frontman of Jars of Clay. Didn't need them to make the song great, but they add another nice touch.
7 Crazy (4 of 5)
- another really solid effort... got radio plan on christian radio for a while...
8 Pennyless (3 of 5)
- drags a bit. nice chorus and good vocals... could've used a soft guitar line
9 Cure (1 of 5)
- lyrics are fine... the song just doesn't sound right. possibly bad production or bad composing.
10 Send Angels (3.5 of 5)
- very popular with girls, i've found. not a bad song at all... although it kind of doesn't seem to fit on the album, based on style.
Life on Pluto (2.5 of 5)
- catchy, fun. definitely doesn't make the cut of the CD, but works as a hidden track. worth hearing a couple times.
PERFECT!.......2005-09-08
This is the SECOND time I have bought this CD. I bought it several years ago and I lost it. This CD is so good, I bought it again. That should tell you something! Every track on this disc is really great. I discovered Plumb when they opened up for Jars of Clay at a concert several years ago.
Plumb has released other albums since this one but I don't think the others are as good (from the snipets I've heard at Amazon and other website). You know how a band always has one album that is better than anything they have ever produced? Well for Plumb, this album is the one.
Musically I would say they sound a lot like Garbage, just with better lyrics.
Plumb is Sister Seven meets Portishead.......2005-01-07
I agree that the genre of the CD does not come across as religious. Perhaps spiritual is a more appropriate word. I don't fine it depressing at all in fact, I find it thought provoking. To me they are Sister Seven (Arista Artist) meets Portishead. A funk, alternative rock meets electronica atmospheric dance. I liked them right away at first listen. This rarely happens with me so I am definitely impressed!

Customer Reviews:
Not Mainstream.......2007-05-26
Because every day on the radio they play people who are not half as good and creative as she is.
She is spectacular at arrangements. I was blown away the first time I heard Nothing Sacred. It's a spectacular song with such excellent lyrics.
How many current pop musicians could produce a song like Paris with it's tasty arrangement of strings over guitars with these beautiful lyrics about a woman in Paris and her love affair with a Nazi and the results. Or a song about the war with this sweet sarcasm about it.
It's a solidly good CD. Jonatha Brooke deserves to sell billions of albums.
AMAZON REVIEWER MUST BE HEARING IMPAIRED!!!.......2005-12-28
Who is this Geoffrey Himes guy anyway. This review is a joke. Perhaps he likes Celine Dion, but those of us who don't wan the Hallmark Hall of Fame version of music enjoy the the lush and passionate voice and artistry that lies behind all Jonatha Brooke's work. Her voice is amazing and versatile. Buy her stuff, it's amazing. The song-writing is the best around from the music to the lyrics to, yes, the vocals and musicianship. Check out ALL her stuff. My personal favorite is TEN CENT WINGS. Oddly on that album review by Mr. Himes, he fails to mention her voice even once and comments on her, "momentum of a most promising career". Pretty amazing turnaround for someone who he basically claims can't sing on this album.
Among my favorites.......2005-12-11
Just had to add my voice to all those who heartily disagree with amazon's review. This album is amazing!!!
She has Grace in Gravity..........2005-03-17
Jonatha Brooke's "Plumb" seems like no other, so original in conception and execution, bowing to no concern or preoccupation with commerical acceptance. While hitherto limiting her widespread acceptance from others who might appreciate an artist who writes and sings from the truth of her experience, she preserves the beauty of her unique gifts as an artist and songwriter ---- and a truly gifted one she is. No one can legislate taste, but to my ears this is one stunning tour de force of an artistic effort, everything from lyric to music to vocals to arrangements and accompaniment being carefully and thoughtfully integrated into an intelligent, passionate, and compelling experience. I think most people who have listened and reviewed her here understand this, and have responded to the 'authenticity' of her unique and original artistic vision. She is immensely gifted, and she uses her voice just as expressively and beautifully as an instrument of that vision. I don't think Jonatha can be easliy categorized as Folk, Pop, or any other easily definable label. Listen carefully, and you will hear all manner of influence and genre from Folk, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz ---- even Classical. Listen to "Paris," and hear how wonderfully and expressively she incorporates such diverse elements into the body and texture of the composition, never artificially adding in such influence in order to manufacture a sound. She is original and authentic, and while one may hear strains of other major talents and influences such as Joni Mitchell in her voice and arrangements, they remain influences, as Jonatha creates something unique, fresh, and entirely original with her art. And while her music, lyrics, singing, and playing all breathe with an unerring intelligence and originality, in the end it will be the raw and direct passion of her experience -- and the convincing expression of it through her 'art' -- that will compel your attention and hit you where the best art does ---- simultaneously, through the heart, the gut, and the mind. She is of and for all of these -- and for us -- and her gifts of expression for the universal experience of all who have lived and loved make her a first-rate artist of singular talent and ability. Look up all definitions of 'plumb' in a good dictionary, and see if the title of this CD does not truly represent what Jonatha Brooke has created here ---- plumbing the depths of emotion and experience as only the very best songwriters/poets can, returning with the gifts of perception, lyric, and melody. Speaking of melody, Jonatha has a prodigious gift of melody like no other, which reminds one of that same gift in Joni Mitchell, though Jonatha's is entirely unique and original. An artist of immense intelligence and lyric beauty. A treasure in need of being discovered.
Bawl Your Eyes Out.......2005-01-12
OK - this is the absolute PERFECT CD for anybody that has a broken heart and needs to wallow in self pity for a little while. "Nothing Sacred" and "Inconsolable" are particularly good songs and I guarantee you will be sobbing your eyes out over the creep that broke your heart.

Customer Reviews:
Yes, this CD is redundant, but great!.......2006-02-25
As numerous reviewers have noted, this CD was released after only two (two amazing) albums by Plumb. The official word as I understand it is this: The contract Plumb had with the label stipulated 3 albums. This release satisfied that requirement. While I'd recommend that you obtain the original two discs, you certainly wouldn't be doing badly to get this one if you don't plan to do that. This is one of my favorite groups. If you even listen to the clips you should see why that's true. The albums released after this have been great in their own right, just a little mellower.
Proof that categories are just a name.......2005-10-09
I think I have an advantage by starting with this CD. Long time fans seem taken back by this, stating whether Plumb should've opted for a 'Greatest Hits' collection so early in their career. The only reason I was introduced to Plumb was because of their song on the Brokedown Palace soundtrack, Damaged. So with me starting with this CD I get the opportunity to see the highlights these young guns have had in their short time. One thing that did kind of make me wary of buying this, and the only thing at that, was the fact that they sing Christian music. I don't like to be preached to when I listen to music, I like to be entertained. And, sadly, Christian music has a tendency to preach. Plumb, however, doesn't fit into that mold. If you wouldn't read any reviews for this CD, you wouldn't ever gather that they were a religious band.
We start this disc with the insanely catchy Here With Me. This song really baffles me. I can't understand why mainstream radio didn't completely grasp this. To the casual ear it's merely a cry to an old flame. This kind of song is popular right now. Radio's loss I suppose. Sobering is another track that sounds fit for normal radio play. Very catchy and an extremely upbeat vibe to it. Late Great Planet Earth surprised me. Knowing this is the band that made Damaged, I didn't expect to ever hear anything like this from them. This is an outright rock track with catchy guitar parts and a wonderful chorus that you'll never forget. Who Am I? is the next track. A worthy follow-up to such a juggernaut track. Great lyrics mixed with a beat that follows the vocals so nicely is always a winning combination. Now we move to the song that made me want this CD, Damaged. I think this is the dreamiest track this disc offers. The vocals are perfectly distorted to sound like Tiffany is singing into a tunnel. The music is so complex that you'll be listening to it over and over trying to take in everything it has to offer. God-Shaped Hole is the only outright Christian song on here. But even this song is presented in such a way that it doesn't bring down the listen. It's a very nice track and is worth being included. Pennyless is the last real track in this collection. It's a nice song that shows the listener just how amazing Tiffany's voice is. The only drawback is that it's so short, weighing in at only 3:01. The remixes close out the CD. They're all equally good, I'm just not one for remixes. I find they take away from the experience. These are some of the better ones I've heard though. So, a nice inclusion.
Overall, a few of my favorite songs on here are Here With Me, Late Great Planet Earth, Who Am I?, Damaged, God-Shaped Hole and Pennyless. I almost didn't buy this CD simply because of the way Plumb are categorized. Although I still don't like the genre, this is one band I will follow from here on.
Undecided.......2005-07-04
Hi, the review that mentioned that this girl wrote that great Mandy Moore song really interested me into listening to all the snippets on here and I liked them. Plumb kind of sounds like the best of Jewel/Dido and Garbage combined, but I am unsure whether to get it or not. The last mixed/christian cd I got was Stacie Orrico, and I ended up only relating to the "seccular" -if that's what they call it - songs. ?
Did I miss something?.......2002-10-22
This has to be one of the stupidest ideas to have come to fruition lately. A greatest hits for a band that has done all of....TWO albums! First off, Plumb is a great band (see my review of CANDYCOATEDWATERDROPS) but they do not deserve a greatest hits. It's a shame because I would like to be able to say that the 'Christian' music industry is less concerned with making dinero than their secular counterparts. Unfortunately, projects like this show that to be untrue. After all, if people will dish out the money...the joke's on you music buyer. Two stars because some of the music is good, but who wants FOUR remixes? Jeez. What a joke.
Outstanding!.......2002-08-18
Plumb really appealed to me because their music is a mixture of rock and christian. Tiffany Arbuckle's voice is beautiful and she sings with such grace and emotion. It is difficult to choose a favorite track on here because all of them are excellent. I'd highly recommend this album. It's a great variety of cool music! You have to love Stranded, Concrete, and Damaged.

A partially great collection of music.......2005-10-21
Plumb started out with a sound to really grab you. As the band has grown (and now changed to just a single person), the sound has matured. This collection is a good overview of some of their better songs. If you've never heard Plumb, this is an ok start, but I'd suggest just skipping it and going straight for CandyCoatedWaterDrops instead. Half of the songs on this collection are from that release, and it's worth owning. Still, the radio hits ("Stranded", "Here With Me") are on this disc, and the price can't be beat.

Academy Award winning soundtrack.......2005-08-19
This is a modern Disney original soundtrack restoration from the 1942 movie by master restoration producer Randy Thornton. He has taken music recorded in the 1940's, reconstructed it,and de-noised it so that it sounds clean and crisp. The song "Love is a Song" was nominated for an Academy Award but was beat out by "White Christmas" that year. The Score was also nominated for 'Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture category'. Long time Disney Studio composer Frank Churchill and Larry Morey wrote the 4 songs that had lyrics for Bambi, and had worked together on the songs for Snow White. The movie was made during the period when Walt was still very involved in every aspect of developing an animated feature, and Bambi was no exception. He pushed his composers hard to come up with the sound he envisioned. Bambi is known as "Walt's personal favorite". The feature had only 900 words of dialogue, so it was intended that the score and songs would carry the emotions and story. This soundtrack has less lyrics than any other Disney feature with the exception of Fantasia.
There is even a demo of a song that was not used in the movie included here as a bonus "Rain Drops" which influenced a later song "Little April April Showers". There is a great 15 page booklet with song lyrics, great liner notes, and terrific artwork from the movie. All total the CD lists 16 tracks and 53 minutes of music. Overall a gem of Disney history and very fun to listen to. These restoration CD's from Disney are a great deal being very affordable.
