lightfoot.......2007-07-22
It's a keeper once you have all the others. Here you will find song themes of poverty, love, remorseful self reflection, as well as betrayal. "That same old obsession" is another work of impeccable genius with a chilling reference to evil during a lovers agony in the garden: unheard of profundity among trite contemporary love songs. "Someone is crying I'm calling her name deep in the garden, deep in my brain. I long to recall every kiss, every kind word, I miss her so much I could die, but the creatures of evil have captured her heart and that same old obsession still keeps us apart."
Heartfelt and non-commercial.......2006-08-29
One of my favorite of Gord's albums because he's singing his heart even more than usual.
Nothing commercial going on here; no pop tunes, no overt attempts at a single. Instead, the best collection of lyrics Gord ever put on a single album. Each song evokes a particular mood; just the right memories matched lyrically to just the right music.
More than any other GL album, this one makes me feel like I know him.
Lightfoot at his best.......2006-07-18
In the early 70's Gordon Lightfoot cranked out a lot of good folk based music and there are differing views on where he shines best. For me, he's at his best here, Old Dan's Records. While I agree it's not easy to pick one album over another and I wouldn't have problems with someone who wanted to argue for another of his albums, for me this album stands out for two reasons.
The first is the arrangements. Back when Lightfoot was doing his best work there was a thing for adding orchestration to his music, I suspect to make them more popular and "commercial." But I've always felt he sounds best when the strings are gone and the music focuses on his voice and the guitars, dobros, bass, and drums - his basic sound, Lightfoot with Rick Haynes, Terry Clements and Red Shea. And of all his albums, this one more than any other I know emphasizes that sound. The strings are here, but they take a back seat. You barely notice them when they appear.
The other reason is that it was around this time Lightfoot's voice was at its best. He sounds great on this disc.
His songwriting is also at its peak. So ...
This album more than any other captures the Gordon Lightfoot I love. It also has three of my favourite Lightfoot songs: Farewell to Annabel, Old Dan's Records and Lazy Mornin'.
Yes, I love this album.
Lightfoot's Best.......2006-07-12
I agree with the previous reviewer who states that this may very well be the best Lightfoot cut ever. In my mind, the music and instrumentation (guitar, banjo, autoharp, dobro, pedal steel) are the very soul of Gordon Lightfoot: Country folk tunes about the day-to-day thoughts and feelings we all experience. Love, travel, "chilling out", and good-old fashioned clean fun. Yup, some reviewers found the album boring: It is supposed to mellow the listener out! The proof of this is in the lyrics to the classic "Hi'way Songs": "When I walk the hills so high, around the town where I was born; New York seems so far away, though I was there just yesterday." Buy this CD and take a trip back to when "...picking with a friend 'till dawn, singing all those hi'way songs." was one of the most exciting and meaningful things one could do.
Classic Gordon!.......2006-06-20
I don't see anything wrong with this album. It has everything that I want from a Gordon Lightfoot album: love, nature, longing, and beautiful music. Listen to it again!

Music for "blackout nights" during the War.......2004-09-12
During the 1930s and `40s, Wagnerian tenor Lauritz Melchior was the most famous Danish tenor in the world, singing virtually every role Wagner ever wrote worldwide, but in Denmark during the same period a very different kind of tenor was flourishing: Aksel Schiøtz, with his light, silvery voice, high standards of musicianship, excellent command of lieder and wide popularity among his countrymen for his singing of Danish folk and art songs.
All of this came to an abrupt end in the fall of 1946 when Schiøtz, suffering from severe headaches and impaired vocal control, was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had to be removed immediately. The operation saved his life but left one side of his face, and vocal muscles, paralyzed. Through sheer hard work he was able to com back, two years later, as a baritone, but though the phrasing and musicianship remained intact the voice no longer had its silvery bloom. He continued to perform and record as a baritone through the late 1950s, then became a teacher of voice and interpretation in Colorado before accepting a similar post in his native Denmark in 1969. He died ten years later.
This particular entry in the Schiøtz series concentrates on light music, the kind of material that made him popular with everyday Danes who were not particularly interested in Schubert, Bach, Buxtedhude or even the art-songs of Carl Nielsen. Among the real treasures here are the excerpts from an operetta based on the life of the great castrato Farinelli, though the plot apparently restored his manhood and made him a hot lover, as well as the Cole Porter song "Night and Day" (sung in beautiful English), excerpts from Bernhard Christensen's "jazz oratorios" with The Rhythm Girls, snippets of Danish film songs, and recordings made under the moniker of "The Masked Tenor." All are sung with an artless simplicity and great beauty of tone.
None of the cramped, dry LP pressings we all became to familiar with were used here, or indeed in any of the volumes of this series; every single track was lovingly and meticulously restored in London's Abbey Road studios from mint-condition copies of the original 78s or brand-new transfers made from the original metal parts. The results are simply magical, creating a tremendous intimacy between the tenor and listener in a way that is hard to describe unless you hear it for yourself. A shame that most of these CDs are now hard to obtain, but I urge you to get them if you can!
