If you ever loved this band, "Live At Nearfest" will remind you why. If you've seen them live recently, you know that they have lost none of their power and youthful exuberance, and all of this comes through on the CD.

Read Ron Lindeboom's comments below, then go see the band again. And buy the CD. Support our artists.

Play forever, lads!

4 out of 5 stars A great album by a wonderful band -- with 2 more songs than shown..........2005-08-10

Strawbs: Live at NEARfest 2004 actually has two more songs than shown in the list above. 'Lay Down' shows up in the #3 spot and down at #7 is 'Remembering/You & I When We Were Young.' This album has all the drama, intensity, majesty and heartache that have made Strawbs one of the great progressive rock bands that simply refuse to call it quits -- this, as their audience will not let them. ;o) This is the classic 'Hero & Heroine' line-up and they are firing into some of their great momments and songs like 'New World' arguably see their most intense, fiery and passionate incarnation. 'New World' reminds me of the drive and intensity of ''The Who's 'I Can See For Miles'-meets-New World'' -- it's played with a drive that is befitting David Cousins' intro in which he describes where he was and what he was doing when September 11th's tragedy broke across the world. When he gets to the intro line of 'There's blood in the dust where the city's heart beats...' it is nothing short of hair raising. Dave Lambert sets 'The Winter Long' (from the Autumn suite) ablaze and the ending is arguably more powerful than the one featured on 'Hero & Heroine.' (You almost need to lay back and have a cigarette or something after it ends -- it is simply scalding and the build to the conclusion is a wonderful musical ride.) John Hawken's keyboards are where they should be in the mix, front and center with the majesty and power you'd expect. Chas's bass thunders and even the fatness of 73's 'Hero & Heroine' mix (which I always felt was one of the best mixes from 1973) is surpassed here and Chas sounds as if a brontosaurus is walking aound in your stereo. It's fat. ;o) Rod Coombes' drums stab, jab and drive the band in places but in the subtle passages, you are treated to Rod's incredible sense of cymbal combinations and fills that few drummers can match. Not too loud and not too laid back, but right where it should be in the mix. Many Strawbs fans are already over at the Yahoo Strawbs discussion group commenting that this is the best live Strawbs album ever. I'd agree. (For more on these comments and to find the Strawbs listserv, check at www.strawbsweb.co.uk for directions.) This is a superb live album and is one for the fans, pure and simple. Strawbs have always been, to me, the most dramatic rock band in the history of rock -- almost Shakespearean in their command of language and drama. In this album, they prove that they have lost none of that drama. If it were a double album, I would give it five stars.

Album Description

"Live At NEARfest" is Glass Hammer's follow-up to the critically acclaimed DVD "Lex Live", also available on Amazon. Glass Hammer is in top form, performing selections from "Chronometree", "Perelandra," and the symphonic masterpiece, "Lex Rex." Soaring keyboards, poignant guitars, and top-notch vocals, rounded out with an 18-member chorus and a surprise guest appearance by Richard Williams of Kansas make this a one-of-a-kind live recording. The album was meticulously mixed and mastered by Steve Babb and Fred Schendel at Sound Resources to ensure maximum sound quality. In a recent Background Magazine (Holland) article, Henri Strik calls Glass Hammer's "Lex Rex" a "masterpiece", and names Glass Hammer as "America's leading prog band". 1340.mag.com names Glass Hammer as its pick for number one indie-group of the year, and the "band to watch explode in 2004". Pete Pardo (SeaOfTranquility.com) describes Glass Hammer as "one of the best progressive rock bands in existence today."

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous! Wow!!.......2007-05-22

This band had been recommended to me and so I thought I would give them a try. This is the first album I picked up. Whoa!! These guys know how to compose, orchestrate, and arrange great music!! There is a lot of bad prog rock out there - just long, fast playing with no sense of direction or meldoy. Not so with Glass Hammer. Amazing melodies and great arrangements!

I am now going through their catalog and picking up their other works one by one.

If you enjoy the likes of YES, ELP, Kansas, and 70's Genesis, then I highly recommend Glass Hammer.

There is not a bad moment on this live album.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome.......2007-03-15

The music is great. The production is great. If you like prog, and you like Glass Hammer, you will love this. I have found that Glass Hammer live tends to be even better than Vanilla Glass Hammer. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars The Glass Hammer CD I Have Been Waiting For!.......2005-01-02

I have several Glass Hammer CDs. This is the best of the bunch. Why? It is the addition of drummer Matt Mendians and the excellent performance by everyone in the band. Like all Glass Hammer CDs, this one has great keyboards, and the bass is more audible. This one makes me very glad that CDs do not wear out.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Live Sound from Tennesee's Finest!.......2004-08-04

If progressive rock has ever tickled your fancy, and bands like Yes, Kansas, ELP, and Camel bring back fond memories, Glass Hammer will kick your nostalgia into full gear with this album.

Recorded LIVE in one take at the Trenton War Memorial at NEARFest 2003, "Live at NEARFest" will not dissapoint long time fans of Glass Hammer.

Featuring music from albums "Chronomotree," "Perelandra," and nearly all of the highly acclaimed "Lex Rex," the players in this group prove once and for all that they can create the same incredible music live, as they do in the studio.

Each song was meticulously mastered track by track and mixed to give the sound a HUGE live feel, but at studio quality (GH is known for their post-production skills).

Highlights of this album include a 'once-in-a-lifetime' performance of "Portait (He Knew)" featuring Kansas' own Richard Williams on guitar, as well as a moving 3 song set featuring a full 18 person choir! The final 3 tracks are NOT to be missed.

This album is a great choice to fill the collection of Glass Hammer enthusiasts and is a good starting point for anyone wanting to know their music better.

5 out of 5 stars Another No-Brainer for Prog Fans Everywhere.......2004-08-03

Glass Hammer have been busy boys (and girls!) lately! Firstly, their excellent studio album "Shadowlands" was followed by their first DVD "Lex Live" and now we have a live CD of their 2003 performance at the North East Art Rock Festival (NEARFest). This CD brings the same lineup and setlist as on the aforementioned DVD with the exception of "Portrait, He Knew" with Kansas' Rich Williams guesting on guitar.

From reading the liner notes for this CD it's a wonder that it isn't 70 minutes of silence what with malfunctioning bass pedals and no soundchecks but in true trouper's fashion the GH guys carry this one off with great aplomb. Thanks to the fastidious mixing in the studio by GH stalwarts Fred Schendel & Steve Babb, the flavour and atmosphere of what must have been a great night for all concerned transfers seamlessly to disc and everyone that may not have been heard too clearly on the night are picked out beautifully here, especially the choir (how very Prog :-)).

The music is, as always, exquisite. Primarily based on their then current studio album "Lex Rex" the pieces are by turns simple, stirring, multi-layered and evocative as they tell the story of the Roman Centurion Longinus and his search for glory. If you like your music complex, passionate, symphonic and (gulp!) progressive then this is a no-brainer and shows just what true musicianship can accomplish in the live environment (especially under pressure!)

Of course, to get the full effect you should ideally pick up the DVD "Lex Live" as well ;-) but Glass Hammer have been described elsewhere as "America's Leading Prog Band" and, on this evidence, you won't get an argument from me on that score!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome live album from an awesome live band........2001-10-27

Oh, how I yearn to see Spock's Beard live. I've talked to folks who've seen Yes two dozen times, witnessed Fish's final performance with Marillion, and spoken reverently of Peter Gabriel's live days with Genesis. Exciting stuff, right? Almost invariably, Spock's Beard still ends up as one of best live shows they've seen. Spock's Beard is a band completely in love with their music, never forgetting to have fun, and abandoning the traditional pomp and bombast of typical progressive rock bands.

Obviously, a live album can't reproduce the sheer excitement of a Beard concert, but I'll take whatever I can get. With Live at the Whisky and NEARfest, I'm not complaining one bit. This recording was taken straight off the board, so the sound is raw but ripped with energy. And Spock's Beard plays with swells of energy. The entire two-disc set pulses with the amplified liveliness of the Beard's live might. If you like the Beard's studio tunes, you'll die over the super high-energy live versions.

There's lots of fun stuff here. Neal Morse is an awesome performer and dripping with charisma; his repartee with the audience always raises a smile. It's funny when he asks the crowd, "Does anyone wanna hear a song in, like, 4/4?" to which the crowd emphatically responds, "No!!" Other special treats are the added jams in "Go the Way You Go," the slammin' drum solo in "The Light," and the cover of Genesis' "Squonk," sung very well by drummer Nick D'Virgilio.

Yo Beard fans: If you don't get this, you must be crazy.

4 out of 5 stars For the fans.......2001-07-26

The sound isn't always great, the recording conditions occasionally less than favorable, but the band is tops.

Go see this band live. I have two of their live albums (including this one), but nothing compares to seeing them in concert. It almost captures this feeling, but not quite.

If you are a fan already, you will probably appreciate this addition. If you are new to the Beard, try the studio releases or Don't Try This at Home first.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than the preceding two.......2005-08-29

This is prog as it should be in 2005.
If you like to explore new avenues in music (intriguing athmospheres, weird counterpoint, warped harmonies) then this is for you.
If your bag is the standard rehash of old ideas from the 70's, which is the lot of most neo-prog bands of today, then you can either stay clear of Miriodor, or take a chance at something new with Parade.
The live at Nearfest set (disc 2) just rips the studio versions of the previous album (Mekano) to shreds, so Parade would be a good introduction to the band.
Be warned that this is not easy listening though. The focus is more on the overall textures than on melodies in the traditional sense.

5 out of 5 stars Feed the Mind, Free the Intellect.......2005-06-21

Miriodor's music has always been some of the most 'technical' around, with fast time-changes and off-kilter rhythms, unusual instrumentation and oddly-hummable tunes. On this their sixth release, they continue in the same direction, but with a little additional experimentation in the instrumentation.

It's impossible to describe Miriodor's music as they sound like nobody else, but if you could imagine a Klezmer band playing with Hungarian Gypsies inside a French cabaret... well, if you can imagine THAT you'll be able to dig right into Miriodor without an appetizer!
