Little Lights
Little Lights
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Kate Rusby's fragile, haunting voice is only the first reason among equals that makes Little Lights such an unmitigated delight. Just as wondrous are her delicate acoustic arrangements of traditional tunes, the sensitive musicianship of her collaborators (notably guitarists Ian Carr and John Doyle, and the refined backing vocals of Eddi Reader), and, last but definitely not least, her burgeoning songwriting skills. There are more Rusby originals here than on her previous two solo albums, with the catchy story-songs "I Courted a Sailor" and "William and Davy" proving standout items. That is until the extraordinary climax of the album with "My Young Man"--a deeply personal song about Rusby's own grandparents--in which her molasses-rich voice is accompanied by a heavenly brass choir. Elsewhere, an achingly mournful cover of Richard Thompson's "Withered and Died" once again demonstrates Rusby's subtle magic with other people's material. (As a bonus track, the Rusby clan gets together for an impromptu family rendition of "The Big Ship Sails.") Anyone charmed by Rusby's Mercury Award-nominated Sleepless or her mature debut Hourglass need not hesitate. Those yet to discover one of the finest voices in British folk should rush to acquire all three. --Mark Walker

happy music.......2006-08-29
I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio, not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work. You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then? Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back. That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil, and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay, log onto Amazon, click, click, all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived, suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.
Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26
It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

Not a bad selection.......2007-07-16
I liked quite a few of Kate's songs such as "Playing of Ball","Withered and Die","Some Tyrant",and especially "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies".
Her other CD, Hourglass was better but this one is still worth listening to.
Charming and sweet.......2007-07-07
This is the only Kate Rusby album I have. I'm not a big fan - just like her performances on the album. The settings are intimate and quiet here, the kind of music you'd hear in some pub in a coastal town in the UK. With some influences from sea shanties and English folk, you get the feeling of a modern Jane Austen who sings with a guitar, rather than writes novels. Sweet.
Rusby's Little Lights.......2007-01-10
My wife and I first heard a song off this CD on NPR, I think it was the back porch show. Immediately, my wife fell in love, and I admit I too was a bit intrigued by Rusby's folky, almost Irish sound. So, I purchased the CD as a christmas present for my wife and neither of us were dissapointed; the rest of the songs were just as enjoyable as the few we heard on NPR.
Not her best (but she still has it!).......2004-05-10
For what it's worth, I do know someone who loves this cd, though I have always found it to be the weakest of her lot, not because of her, or the production, (which is a notch cleaner than on her previous two releases) but because of the repertoire, which others have noted to be relatively bland. There are about four "classic" tracks on it that I am glad to have, but for an artist that usually puts out more like eight of those in an album this is something of a disappointment. The others, while quite listenable, are also easily forgettable.
While Kate's own songwriting has never been her main product--as a traditionalist, she would mark it a triumph if you couldn't pick her own out--her own do fall among both camps on this album, that is, the forgettables and the classics. On later albums, they will more often be among the best. The reviews that are suggesting this album marks her expiration date are obviously not taking into account the magnificent "10" and "Under the Stars" which have followed. If you're a newbie to Kate, get those, (in that order), and after that if you're really addicted, this album will fall on pretty much equal footing with the first two, Hourglass and Sleepless, since about half of each is reprised and improved on "10".
they all sound the same.......2004-02-04
I'm afraid I must agree with Sukeydebby's review of Little Lights. All the songs end up sounding the same. Lovely, yes, but Kate really needs to try some new arrangements or select (or write) more upbeat songs. I wonder if it's her producer, or her choice of arrangements that is to blame. (Compare Andy M. Stewart's superior version of "Matt Hyland", for one.) She needs to develop. Again, don't get me wrong, I love her voice, and the songs taken one at a time are fine. It's just that listening to the entire album in one sitting leaves you frustrated, and, frankly, a bit bored. She can do much better than this, I think.

A great album!.......2001-12-08
I love this album and I'm not Jewish! The music is uplifting and the young performers wonderful. I keep it on the player the entire holiday season.
A tasty audio latka for the ear and soul.......1999-12-13
The review below captures the essence of the CD. Recorded at Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory, you may have seen the video broadcast of this performance on PBS. In addition to excellent and stirring renditions of Hanukah favorites, the CD includes the popular SPanish Hanukah song of 8 candle (Ocho Kaandelaros); a humorous Latke Cooking Demonstration by the octogenerian comedian Ms. Chasia Segal; and a blues/gospel rendition of "I Have A Little Dreydl" which will change the way you sing it forever.
Lively, touching and richly varied entertainment..Great!.......1999-11-08
Take Theodore Bikel, the storied folk musician and "Fiddler" Tevye, cantor Morton Shames, the Boston Community Gospel Choir, extraordinarily talented musicians and vocalists of the New England Conservatory, and put them all in the hands of brilliant Klezmer/Jazz- Composer, Musician and Impressario Hankus Netsky and you have a stellar show and the recording "A Taste of Channukah"
Wonderful performances are everywhere and newcomer Elizabeth Parvin is a stunning example. Her duet with Bikel, and her solo within it, offer the listener a portal to true vocal brilliance. Her beautiful and expressive soprano mark her as a very bright star on the horizon. Miss Parvin and the other accomplished young performers show how artistic interpretations can be a continuing and fulfilling source of cultural renewal. This CD is a work of art, a lot of fun and a definite winner!

This is a great CD. Peter Scott Lewis has written some of the best chamber music in recent years, and it's beautifully performed on this CD. The hightlights are Beaming Contrasts and Through The Mountain. Yet the other compositions are this collection are not to be missed. Highly recommended!

This is an enjoyable listen. I have both of these albums on record but they sound much better on CD. The warm infectious tones of Martys' voice made any song his own, as is proven here on the many standards on this set. So turn the lights down low and get a little sentimental!!

A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26
This is probably one of the most complete scores you will ever find for an item, and the songs are all well-written and unique from each other. I will review a few specific tracks:
1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.
3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.
4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.
6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.
8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.
10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).
11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...
19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.
22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.
23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.
25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.
26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.
27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.
Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!

Zazou specializes in ambient soundtracks for nonexistent movies that take their cues from various world music genres. This time out it's Irish sacred music, and Zazou, with the help of a small army of international stars including Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy, trumpet wiz Mark Isham, and French picker extraordinaire Thierry Robin, has fashioned 13 moody settings for ancient and modern texts that feature mournful vocals by Brede Mayock and Lasairfhiona ni Chonaola. The result is new agey, but the passion of the singers and some disturbing instrumental touches keep the music from getting too predictable. The misleading ads for this album say that it features Brendan Perry from Dead Can Dance, and Katie McMahon from "Riverdance." Perry does play percussion on two tracks, and McMahon sings lead on three, but if you're looking for the Gothic pop of DCD or the exuberant Irish jigs of "Riverdance," you're going to be disappointed. --j. poet

ASTLEYAN AS ANYTHING.......2002-01-10
If you like Virginia Astley you are bound to love this album as its possibly the greatest one she never made.Theres a link of sorts with Virginia as the entire album is dedicated to Caroline Lavelle who takes part.
This is an album I play a lot.I've had it on a Walkman, ringing through my ears.I've LIVED with it.
Maybe at some future stage this Algerian expatraite will coax Virginia out of retirement to put in an appearance on some future album, the ame way he apparantly did with the ex Passion Barbara Gogan.
Zazou is a Cult Artiste who will never find commercial fame yet will continue to make great music. You just have to be grateful for stuff like this, for record companies who will spend a fortune and know there will be little return
This is Forever Music that makes you feel good and I would say this is the Zazou you should hear first before exploring the other albums
Sheer brilliance in the dark.......1999-06-29
Hector and the ladies go way beyond the traditional ethereal old and modern Irish religious Sean Nos of the likes of Noirin Ni Riain, who is justly thanked on this album "for paving the way". Nowhere the same, nowhere boring, nowhere conventional, but refreshing, surprising and renewing a very old tradition. Like a genuine Celtic tradition to mould an amalgam of the very best of foreign elements (Japanese!) with the strong potential of indigenous traditions to create a unique and succesful blend. A perfect album as such, in its sheer musical brilliancy but even with consideration to the tradition of numerical esoterism when putting its strongest track Amhran na Paise on position seven (!) out of a total of thirteen (!) Columcille himself would have approved! He who has ears, may he hear...
Music to make moss grow, whisky flow and tired skin prickle........1999-02-06
This should surprise nobody. The man needed to set straight the dangerous Riverdance tendency which should not be the world's window on Irish culture. Lights in the Dark follows naturally the even more ethereal -- but perhaps more feral -- Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corse (Philips 848515-2), a set of Corsican choral works with a little touch of John Cale. How can I find out what's happening next? Do I wait 'til Cale comes to Australia again, and ask him? Hector, talk to me!
Distinto ?
Hypnotically beautiful.......1998-10-13
An ethereal, dreamy collection of sacred Irish hymns - very different from Hector Zazou's other CDs, but equally mesmerising. The vocalists and arrangements are haunting. Not to be missed!
