Album Description
Kona, Hawaii: think lush natural landscapes, divine inspiration and kids with nothing to do except find the next rage and invent slicker ways to pick up girls. Add metal and rock/dancehall influences to Hawaiian spirit, humor and ridiculously good looks - and you got Pepper. "Give'n It" was originally recorded in late 1997 in the only studio that existed in Kona at the time. Pepper caught the attention of fans from all corners, particularly Volcom Entertainment. After packing up all their belongings and heading to California, Pepper scored dates with established artists like Born Jamericans, Shaggy, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Pato Banton & Secret Hate, were featured on XBox and Transworld Surf & Snow games, and played an entire run on the Warped Tour 2001, paying their dues by building the stage and pumping their signature Kona-dub-rock into the hearts of fans from state to state. It is edgy, lush, rocking, melodic, innovative, heart-grabbing and a good ride. It is Pepper.
Customer Reviews:
Fun music, but not very original.......2006-12-15
I realize I'm giving this three stars and everyone else has given it five. You'll have to decide for yourself, but I think my score is more justified. Pepper is a fun band with a classic "feel-good" ska/reggae/punk sound ... like Sublime as others have noted. But if you are, or where, a Sublime fan you will ultimately find Pepper disappointing. Not because they are bad, in fact they are pretty fun, but because they never get beyond "fun." Sublime had a certain edge (mostly misogynistic), and unpredictability that Pepper lacks. Maybe with time they'll move past repetitive imitation and find something that makes them unique and interesting. I imagine there ought to be something unique about living and working in Kona?
Don't take all this as a negative review. As long as you don't expect too much (and who really expects a CD to change their life?), Pepper is a good listen. I recommend you try it if you enjoy Sublime and need something new to listen to.
Hidden Treasure.......2006-03-29
I had never heard of Pepper until I was in Hawaii this last week and saw them at the Waikiki Shell with 311. They were an awesome band to see live, and if your looking for a sound that isn't blared all over the radio these guys are it. They do definetly remind me of Sublime, but with thier own Hawaiian twist. I recommend thier music to anyone. They should be on tour this summer with 311 so go and check them out.
Don't know what you're missing.......2005-03-30
Pepper is one of the sickest bands out there. I finally got to see them in concert on Saturday the 26th. I have all their CD's but it was awesome to see them in concert. You WILL NOT be disappointed with Pepper.
Darren.......2004-11-07
Ok ive heard some of they're stuff and ive read the editors description of Kona Hawaii, and seeing that ive been there hand have hung out with the locals of the town, its all very true. I am about to purchase this album because i really love the reggea scene that i saw while I was in Kona.
Brad Nowell may be dead, but his musical influence lives on........2003-10-31
For everyone who was bummed when Sublime ended, your prayers have been answered. This band has a great sound to them and is similar to Sublime and Slightly stoopid. Keep an open mind and you'll find there is alot of music out there to enjoy.
MINT!

Customer Reviews:
Live Energy.......2006-08-31
First heard of Xavier only a few months ago when friends bought me a ticket to see him in concert in Brisbane, Australia. What a truly awesome performance, one man making such fine and energetic music. The combination of great beats, the unearthly sound of the Didjeridoo and his brilliant slide guitar work make Xavier, in my opinion, the best artist to have appeared in this the 21st century. His studio albums are great but this one really gives an indication of how much of an accomplished artist this man is. If you haven't seen him live yet, get this CD and if he is ever performing live in your area, do whatever you can to get tickets and see him, you won't be disapointed.

Customer Reviews:
An opera that deserves consideration by a major company.......2003-10-04
I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.
This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.
The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.
If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.
Soaring majesty!.......2001-12-19
This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.
a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23
I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

A Great Musical Mercenary.......2007-04-11
Hume was a for-profit man of arms during his day who moonlighted as a viol composer, and a fine musician he was. Savall gets the full measure of this music, inspired by a lifetime of study. If one wants a taste of life as seen through the optics of a mercenary during the Thirty Years War, you cannot do better than this disc. Heartily recommended.

Can I give this one 15 STARS??.......2005-01-30
It is so rare nowadays to hear a CD that is fascinating from beginning to end, that engages the mind and heart as this one does. Though I am sure there are many out there who would consider "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to be one of Shakespeare's lesser plays, the delightful fun and wordplay make it, to me, one of his most whimsical and fanciful creations. And Mendelssohn wrote some of his most whimsical and fanciful music for it.
The problems with its presentation, however, are twofold. First, one must have a conductor who is not afraid to take it at or near score, which means not only swiftly but also light and delicately. To this end I have only heard three recordings that fulfill those requirements, the 1942 Toscanini-Philadelphia version, an old and now-forgotten 1950s recording by the great Paul Kletzki, and this one. Otherwise, you have the music played at the right speed but too heavily (Toscanini-NBC and De Burgos-New Philharmonia), or played too slowly (everyone else).
The second problem is, how much of it do you include so that it will make some "sense"? Quite aside from the full-length pieces that we all enjoy (the overture, You spotted snakes, the Scherzo, Nocturne, Wedding March and Finale), there are so many "little snippets" meant to accompany the spoken drama that simply sound odd and disembodied when presented without text. This is the only recording of the music that I find completely satisfying, as it includes large excerpts of the play as foreground to Mendelssohn's music, as it was intended. I can see where, to some music-lovers, this might seem annoying, but this IS what the composer intended! (I once actually saw a performance of the play with Mendelssohn's music in it, and it was quite delightful. And I still own a copy of the 1935 Max Steiner film which uses a good portion of the Mendelssohn music, along with lesser pieces written by Korngold.)
What we have here, then, is a "concept" CD that works brilliantly. The actors of the Oxford and Cambridge Shakespeare Company are all excellent in their roles (though I am more used to Puck being performed by an adolescent boy, not by an adult actor who sounds like a truck driver!), and to hear the music "in context" provides a theatrical experience similar to listening to a radio play.
I cannot thank Virgin Classics enough for producing this magnificent album. I agree that soprano Kathleen Battle was much finer on the Ozawa set than Rebecca Evans here, but that is a very small caveat...after all, the soprano only gets 2 songs and Evans is by no means terrible, she's just not Battle. (Besides, the conductor on the Battle recording is Ozawa who is just too slow, especially in the Overture and Scherzo, whereas Nelson is just right.) The Ensemble Orchestral de Paris plays superbly (is this a studio-only group? I'm not sure that I know of this orchestra), the chorus is wonderful, and the recorded sound is simply breathtaking. Virgin's engineers have managed to capture, without over-exaggerating, both the spoken and musical aspects of this performance in a completely natural soundstage (oftimes I felt as if I were actually listening to the orchestra live!) without losing the soft, delicate passages or overblasting the loud ones. This is a recording that belongs on the shelf of EVERYONE who likes either Mendelssohn, Shakespeare, or both!!

Album Description
Symptoms Of A Leveling Spirit is Good Riddance's most eclectic to date. Of course, it's still a punk album, but full of sub genres - from speedcore to melodic punk and everything in between. Symptoms is awash in melodic punk, from the opening number to the closing alt-punk hidden track, Good Riddance reels out a barrage of hummable songs and hooky choruses. 14 tracks. 2001 release.

Something to listen to when you're mad........2003-12-07
Once in awhile, when your pissed off, you need something to listen to thats fast, hard and releases your stress and anger. This album is like an overdose of arrid. All the yelling and screaming and distorted guitars in this album make you feel better after being very tense. phew. man, im stressed out, i need to pop in some good riddance.
Amazing!.......2003-06-10
I would have to say this is one of the best CD's out there as far as modern Punk is concerned. It flows, it's very well put together, and it is Good Riddance's best work to date. The only way to go wrong, it to not buy this CD.
nothing new here.......2003-03-19
if you don't have it, i would have to reccomend getting "ballads from the revolution". aside from this album not ebing anything too great, russ rankin's vocals consist compeltely of him using the biggest words he can find in the thesaurus and trying to act like everything he says is extremely profound. i dont listen to music to hear about someone's philosophy, but if you do, you may like this.
Not their best work.......2002-01-28
This is a good CD, but I think that their past work was more aggressive and that's what made them what they are. I don't have a problem with musical evolution, but to me this CD lacks something and it never really quite grabbed me. Personally their last CD (or their first) is the best, so I'd recommend you get those before you go out and get this one. It's a bit slow and whilst it has more variety, it just misses that certain indefinable quality that all great CD's have.
Truly a Classic, A must have.......2001-11-29
A half-hour record with material for every punk fan.Feauturing melodic fast punk to well done hardcore songs. it also has some music videos on the cd: "one for the braves" from their past album. It's impreesive how they have improved since then. This energic punk rock album is one of the best punk material that u can get. My only thing to say is that it passes very quickly. This is the best good riddance album. A must have!

Album Description
If Nick Drake decided to hit the open road with Cat Stevens and Ryan Adams, the first album they'd likely put in would be David Berkeley's "The Confluence." It's an acoustic gem, a layered wash of natural sounds (mandolin, cello, guitars, bass, African percussion, warm harmonies). The melodies are intoxicating. The lyrics are poetic. The music is honest. The songs are linger in your brain.
Customer Reviews:
Catch a Rising Star.......2003-07-13
Sweet but not cloying, the music on this impressive debut album will draw you in and keep you there. Berkeley's arresting melodies and gorgeous voice alone make this cd worth buying. But listen carefully to the provocative lyrics, and you'll discover that this talented young man not only can sing but also has something to say.
The Rebirth of Acoustic Music.......2003-03-19
This is a damn good CD. God, David Berkeley can sing.
If you like music that you'll feel as opposed to just hear, if you like lyrics that will make you think, pick up this CD.
