5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

Album Description

SAVAE's "La Noche Buena" recording takes listeners on a delightful, and often unexpected, musical journey into the colonial cathedrals of the Spanish frontier. Adventuresome 16th & 17th-century composers blended the melodies, rhythms and dialects of indigenous Aztecs, Maya, and Incas- with those of Spanish Catholic missionaries and West African laborers to create unique Christmas music for The New World. The Nativity story is told here through music that captures the lively cultural exchange of an unprecedented era when the voices of Native Americans, African Slaves, and Spanish Conquerors were raised together in celebration of the birth of Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Dreaming of a Colonial Christmas........2007-01-11

As a resident of the Philippines, I got this CD to revel in our shared Spanish colonial past and have delighted myself and my friends with frequent playings. I was already familiar with SAVAE's 'Guadalupe' discs and their wonderful evocation of the multicultural music of Aztec, Renaissance and Baroque Mexico. This production continues that unique sound and adds the rhythms of Africa. A worthy addition to anyone's Christmas and/or Period Music collection. Come to think of it, it's fun to listen to without any labels! SAVAE: Come on over and do the same for our Hispanic heritage on this side of the Pacific!

" SAVAE, La Noche Buena
Drum roll, please. The best Christmas album of the year is a dark horse from our own ranks, and we can almost guarantee you've never heard these songs before. The San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble has excavated 16th and 17th century century songs by Spanish, Portuguese and indigenous New World composers in Latin, European, African, and American Indian languages. The seven singers also play the instruments, usually percussion but also guitar and recorders. Lovely, lively stuff."

Album Description

Jefferson and Liberty is a collection of 18th century tunes and songs chosen as representative of those played and sung by working class musicians in the North American colonies. It features jigs, hornpipes, and reels from the English and American country dance repertoire, as well as a French-Canadian dance and party song, La Bastringue"; airs from Ireland and Scotland, military fife tunes from England and France, a Charles Wesley hymn and a Caribbean sea Chantey. The title cut, "Jefferson and Liberty" is an Irish jig that was adopted as Thomas Jefferson's 1800 presidential campaign song. Also included is "O! Say Bonnie Lass", a song taken from the recently discovered musical notebooks of Capt. George Bush, a soldier in Washington's continental army. The album is a sampling of colonial American and European music that would have been shared across political and social boundaries from the pubs and taverns to the dances and parlors.

5 out of 5 stars south american baroque.......2007-01-05

Until recently I had never heard of the South American music greats; people writing at the same time as Mozart, Beethoven and the European Masters, but their music is every bit as great as the Europeans. Stunning arrangements, original approaches, vast choirs and orchestras, the music of baroque South America is infused with a reverence and devotion to Catholic liturgy equal to or greater than that of Europe. One of the surprising, delightfully so, aspects is the influence of indigenous music from the Andes, the jungles, and the pampas upon these composers. Sublime!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo, Maestro Fennell!.......2001-03-19

For the past 50 or so years, Frederick Fennell has probably been the "Best Friend" that collectors of band music in general and marches specifically could ever have imagined! Starting with monaural LP's in the 1950's, such as Marches For Twirling and British Band Classics with the incomparable Eastman Wind Ensemble, which he himself founded, Dr. Fennell has consistently set the standard for march recordings, and has been a tireless champion for wind ensembles as a serious musical medium.

This CD contiues that tradition, with a selection of marches that runs the gamut of styles that define a "march" (military/patriotic, circus, concert, collegiate, Spanish, Italian, etc.)The musicianship on this album is truly outstanding, and Maestro Fennell's understanding of tempo and attention to every detail are once again amply demonstrated. Also, although he has always provided a wealth of information concerning the marches themselves and their composers, I believe this marks the first time that he has also included information in his notes about his personal involvement in each number, a very nice touch! A few thoughts about some of the marches:

March of the Steel Men - This is a great demonstration of the genius of Harry Alford, who bridged the gap between the traditional march style and the "modern" march, which typically contains only two strains and much more complex harmonies, at which Alford excelled, both in his own compositions and in his numerous arrangements.

The Gladiator, El Abanico and Sol y Sombra - Interestingly, Dr. Fennell plays by far the slowest-tempoed version of The Gladiator I have heard, Sousa's first "hit", that I have heard, as if it were a Spanish paso doble, which, of course, it does resemble in style. On the other hand, El Abanico is taken at the fastest pace I know of, apparently being the very rare Spanish march meant to be played as a "quickstep". And Sol y Sombra is finally played as a traditional paso doble (two-step), suitable for the bull ring.

The Footlifter and Men of Ohio - Two fast-paced examples of why "Uncle" Henry Fillmore is considered by many march aficionados to be second only to Sousa as a march writer.

The Northern Pines - One of Sousa's last compositions demonstrates that the March King had not lost his touch for martial melodies over his long career, since this would certainly rank among his best.

Again, this album is among Frederick Fennell's finest recordings, and hopefully will not be his last march recording, but would be a fitting tribute to his long career if it is.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording. Great liner notes. Outstanding content........1998-12-01

If you like marches you have to love this recording. Fennell is truly the march recording king of our time and this could very well be his signature recording. The liner notes are a fascinating personal insight as to Fennell's personal attachment and involvement with each march. As an avid collector of march recordings, the arrangements on this disc are outstanding as are the phonics. The disc brings me back to my high school band days and maraches like Footlifter and Band of America just jump off the disc. A truly wonderful piece of Americana by a band legend

5 out of 5 stars Martial Music from the Age of Reason.......2006-07-16

This is a fine collection of less well known fife and drum music. The playing is superb. The Middlesex County Volunteers represent the collective genius and enthusiam of all the Colonial period re-enactors in this area of music. Although we have the standard "Yankee Doodle" here and there, its interspaced with many fine and certainly not very well known pieces from German and French sources of the period. The fifes have a stronger, fuller quality as noted by one of the reviewers above which gives them a better quality from the standard we normally hear in this regard. MCV has developed what is normally just limited Field Music into a wide ranging tonal sound. These guys also have smart uniforms and no doubt put on a great marching display. Look for them at the Edinburgh Tattoo very soon. With US military bands limited now because of service requirements groups like this will have a greater role to play for local and International Military Tattoos. They can certainly represent the USA every bit as well as the Old Guard Fife and Drum in DC. I look forward to seeing more from the MCV.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2002-05-17

This is another great CD from Middlesesx County Volunteers Fifes and Drums. It has a good varity of songs with some great harmonies. This corps uses 10 hole fifes, so the sound is a lot nicer than with the 6 hole fife.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delight to Listen!.......2001-07-31

This ensemble's playing is very graceful and elegant. It certainly does give a flavor of the kind of music that was played during 18th century battles, military marches, and training exercises. Perhaps this was the music George Washington's troops heard playing when they were marching into battle.
