Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Xmas is a WONDEROUS piece of Nyro.......2006-07-12

Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is just amazing. It to me, was a departure album from the first three Laura composed. I is a reflection of the very new 70s and the climate of her muse then. It sets the stage for a more contempory Laura, invested in the present, and more accessable than the earlier works, which to this reviewer were simply amazing as well. Xmas title is two songs for those who love to analyze Laura's works. With Dwayne Allman doing a guitar so wild on Beads of Sweat. This is a no miss Laura. I find it one of the most compelling albums full of a different turn from her.

Laura Nyro had a voice which was as powerful and beautiful as any singer in musical history. In Christmas and the Beads of Sweat, she combined her vocal artistry, poetic lyrics, and unflagging sense of beautiful melody, to produce an excellent album. While perhaps not her magnum opus, (listen to Eli and the Thirteenth Confession), this CD is still top flight. Especially good is the song, Upstairs by a Chinese Light, which shows her poetic, vocal and musical talents to the fullest degree: The steam of china tea/You could hear the woman sing/In the soft flames of spring. Ms Nyro died at the age of forty-nine, but still left us a varied and great musical legacy to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to believe............2006-04-10

Hard to believe that the critics savaged this album when it was first released. This is a work of creative genius, so evocative, so steeped in honesty that at times its beauty is painful to be next to. There is something in this album that calls and reminds me of who I am.

5 out of 5 stars A Work Of Genius.......2005-02-07

This is not an album of songs that just anyone can sing. It is a masterpiece by a uniquely original artist. "Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp" segueing into "Map To The Treasure" has to be one of the most beautiul recordings ever made. "Been On A Train" is beyond awesome. Nyro was "cult" figure even in her hayday.

5 out of 5 stars SOULFUL NYRO MASTERPIECE~BRAVO LAURA!!!.......2005-01-04

Mesmerizing and passionate are the songs of Laura Nyro and never was Laura finer than "Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat" and its Christmas for all whenever one plays this wonderous set of soulful pleasures and delights! At the peak of her wonderous powers, it is clear from the opening that this is going to be an experience unlike any other...soulfully engrossing vocals are embellished with peerless keyboard riffs by Ms. Nyro that will never be equaled...the soulful depths of "Been On A Train" are harrowing and beyond compare. What is wrong with SONY for not remastering this classic as this is in the trilogy of Nyro masterpieces...are they totally detached from the soul of music? Carole King must have been thrilled with Laura's masterful and magnificent "Up On The Roof" which is a true masterpiece in Laura's hands...continuing is another masterpiece being Laura's own "Upstairs By A Chinese Lamp" with its exotic arrangement and incredibly wonderous tempo changes plus a sensitive soul infused vocal that is stunning. Over the years it has become more apparent that nobody can compare to this incredibly gifted singer/songwriter/pianist who is the greatest of them all as this collection of magnificent performances clearly demonstrates! Bravo Laura Nyro and you are truly missed...do not miss this stunning collection as this kind of earthy inspired greatness will sadly never happen again.
