On a dozen previous albums, Tish Hinojosa has crossed plenty of musical boundaries--from category to language--but an adventurous spirit makes Heart Wide Open sound like a fresh start. The fun begins with the Jamaican ska/reggae lilt of the opening "Never Say Never Love Again" (with Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson providing vocal support). The subtle syncopation of "Derechos de el Corazon" has the feel of a soft Brazilian breeze, while "Whatever Happened to Everyone Wanting to Care" sets Hinojosa's social idealism to a buoyant pop melody. The folk balladry of "Blue Eyed Billy" and the country of "Shotgun Ridin'" find her on more familiar territory, with her veteran Austin band--led by guitarist Marvin Dykhuis--providing its typically impeccable support. Conjunto accordion master Flaco Jimenez guests on a couple of cuts, and violinist Javier Chaparro and steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar also highlight arrangements. Without compromising the purity of her vocals, Hinojosa hits deeper than pretty, her vocals more expressive and subtle than ever. --Don McLeese

Product Description
On her latest release, A Heart Wide Open, Tish Hinojosa continues to express her distinctive musical styles and background. From the opening "Never Say Never Love Again" in which she gracefully blends her Latin and folk roots to her keen observation of today's world in the jangly, pop-flavored "Whatever Happened To Everyone Wanting To Care" to the perfect Mexican folk of "Derechos de el Corazon" to her country "Shotgun Ridin'", Hinojosa refuses to be pigeonholed.

Album Description

Propelled by a star producer and a legion of Nashville's most awarded songwriters, Mountain Heart speeds into 2006 with Wide Open, the band's third album from Skaggs Family Records. Looking to maintain its edge as one of the most adventurous and exciting young acts in acoustic country music, Mountain Heart turned to producer Mark Bright, the studio mentor to such multiplatinum acts as Rascal Flatts, Blackhawk, Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans, and Jo Dee Messina. It was a perfect match. "I idolize these guys and their musicianship", Bright declares.

Central to Mountain Hearts appeal is its great sense of song, a talent that became evident in 1999 when the International Bluegrass Music Association proclaimed the band its Emerging Artist of the Year before the guys even had a recording contract.

For Wide Open, Mountain Heart tapped into songwriters whose works routinely inhabit the top of charts. Among these are Harley Allen, Jeffrey Steele, Wendy Waldman, Jim Rushing, Ronnie Bowman, and Mac McAnally, whose combined roster of country and bluegrass hits includes "Me and John and Paul," "The Cowboy in Me," "Fishing in the Dark," "Little Mountain Church House," "It's Getting Better All the Time," and "Old Flames." Steve Gulley, Mountain Heart's lead singer and guitarist, and fiddler Jim VanCleve contributed three songs.

Once established, Mountain Heart was quickly embraced by the country and bluegrass community. It has appeared regularly on the Grand Ole Opry (in excess of 70 times) and, apart from its own headlining appearances, it has opened larger concerts for such luminaries as George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, Brad Paisley, and LeAnn Rimes.

Mountain Heart's other Skaggs Family albums are No Other Way (2002) and Force of Nature (2004).

5 out of 5 stars Will go Down as a MH Classic.......2006-10-04

I just don't know how much better this group can get. I don't go more than a day or two without finding this disc in my truck, or unwinding with it after work on my iPod. That these boys were pretty much snubbed by the same ol' s*** thats become the IBMA should not detract from the fact that this is a truly magnificent offering and the best bluegrass IMHO that 2006 has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass.......2006-06-27

I consider this one of the best bluegrass CD's I own. I enjoy every track.

5 out of 5 stars Still Pushing The Boundaries.......2006-06-21

I love the new album from Mountain Heart. They are such a groundbreaking band and keep their music fresh. I have all their albums and I'm never worried about buying the same one twice. Each CD is a little different than the last. In a world of complacency and playing it safe when it comes to bluegrass music, these guys are a breath of fresh air. Congrats on a wonderful new recording and keep 'em coming!

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2006-06-13

I have been a long time fan of Mountain Heart, have all of their CD's, and have seen them on many occasions. I was disappointed in this new album, looking for some great new bluegrass hits. Unfortunately, I felt this CD seemed to be more of a "New Age" CD that was not typical bluegrass at all. It seems they are trending more toward the loud, rock-type feeling and away from the traditional bluegrass.

2 out of 5 stars Sadly, overly polished and slow. .......2006-06-01

Although I am a long time fan of Mountain Heart, I was disappointed in the pace and scope of this album. I was looking forward to a great bluegrass album, and instead found a CD full of new acoustic country ballads and one or two average bluegrass songs. Overall the choice of songs seems to me to be a bit hit driven and country in flavor. It's over produced and overly polished.
I respect these men as musicians, and will continue to buy albums and support them as best as I can, but I hope their next album is a little more traditional and hard driving. Don't get me wrong, there is NOTHING wrong with experimentation, and there is certainly nothing wrong with striving for a well produced album, but great albums need it balance...to much polish and you cover up the heart and soul of Mountain Heart.

3 out of 5 stars A Period of Transition.......2007-04-08

A Heart Wide Open arrived on the scene during a period of both personal and professional transition for Tish Hinojosa. She has a new life, a new look and in some ways, a new sound as well. Though she still has the angelic voice for which she is known, her songwriting seems temporarily to have become both more sentimental and more nostalgic.
I have been a fan of hers since the late 1980s and have heard her in concert more times than I can remember. To me, her strongest material is in her 1990s output from Aquella Noche to Frontejas. But even her weaker albums have at least some songs that stand out, and A Heart Wide Open is no exception. My favorites are the patriotic ballad Blue Eyed Billy, the throwback sound of Derechos de el Corazon, the country-tinged Shotgun Ridin, and the plaintive Something More Than This.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I saw Tish in concert at a small San Antonio club. She played several hours and maybe twenty songs. Perhaps cognizant of audience favorites and perhaps her own favorites, she largely steered clear of songs from this album. The crowd was overwhelmed by the quality of her performance and cheered by her announcement that a new all-Spanish album is in the works for the end of the year.
If you are a big fan of Tish Hinojosa, then you are sure to enjoy A Heart Wide Open. On balance, I do. But having been a fan for a long time, I don't think its anywhere near her best work. Three stars make buying this a toss-up.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite singer/songwriter..........2006-04-16

Superior hybrid english/spanish music by one of the top 3 singer/songwriters in the world--at least in my opinion. I am sorry that I am no good at reviews--I just want to say that I love Tish's music.

4 out of 5 stars Hinojosa Offers A Look Into Her "Wide Opened Heart".......2005-08-19

Prime Cuts: Finding Paris, Never Say Never Love Again, Shotgun Rider

Ranked loftily with such talented songwriter-singers as Nanci Griffith and Carrie Newcomer is Tish Hinojosa. As a poetic ratiocinator of the highest order, Hinojosa has an attunement to expound the intricacies of the heart embellished with melodies that are fetching and heart warming. In fact, this was perhaps why Warner Brothers signed her to their roaster a few years ago resulting in two stellar albums, the country-popish "Destiny's Gate" and the folk-imbued "Songs from the Labyrinth." However, the lack of commercial exposure has brought Hinojosa back to the independent label scene. "Hearts Wide Open," released under Valley Entertainment, is the first collection of new compositions in 5 years. Despite the time warp, these 12 self-penned tunes, still shows that Hinojosa has not lost of iota of her songwriting craft made manifest most poignantly through her acerbic observations of life and love. In fact, by way of her stellar scribal prowess, "Hearts Wide Open" is Hinojosa's defiant cri de coeur to make a niche in today's folk and country scene.

The crème de la crème of "Hearts Wide Open" is no doubt "Finding Paris." Situated within the context of a tantalizing saga (perhaps autobiographical) of a struggling family, "Finding Paris" narrates the dreams of the lonely mother of escape via visiting Paris. What makes "Finding Paris" surpasse ce qui est excellent is the languid mandolin riff that romantically transposes one in a dreamy mode to the streets of the city of lights. Never one to be constraint ethnically, musically and linguistically, "Never Say Never Love Again" boasts a lilting reggae beat as Hinojosa trades lines with herself in both Spanish and English on this ode to the far reaching prowess of love. Taking another detour is the bucolic "Shotgun Rider," an upbeat Western-type number that brings to mind one of those old John Wayne movie scenes. While the tempo slows down on "Whatever Happened to Everyone Wanting to Care," as Hinojosa exegetes the lack of a social conscience in today's culture over a heart stirring tune.

However, there are a number of enervations: there are too many ballads. Moreover, though the sentimental "The Kitchen Table" has a powerful message of keeping the family central, Hinojosa's soft and frangible vocals almost sounds like she was somehow disenchanted. Also, "The Poet, the Painter" though it is lauded for its maudlin insights, it gets a little self indulgent at times. "A Thousand Shades of Red and Blue," on the other hand, is a little better. Being a poetically insightful love song, but with a running time of close to 5 minutes, it gets a little too dreary.

Nevertheless, despite these quibbles "A Heart Wide Open" still is a superior album. It's an album that crosses boundaries linguistically (with "Derechos de el Corazon" being delivered entirely in Spanish) and genres. Further, the instrumentation, thanks to producers Marvin Dykhuis, Glenn Kawamoto and Hinojosa herself, are kept to the background with the spotlight on Hinojosa's Suzy Bogguss/Nanci Griffith-like vocals. Also, as a writer, Hinojosa is not superficial in any sense of the word: she has a way of articulating the language of the heart in ways that bears a palatable rhetoric.

These tracks take me flying; I find myself hoovering over the city into the Northern Californian countryside, like the ending of the movie Blade Runner. There is a real sense of closure, where I have been taken thru a tour of the extremes and the magic of the compositions seamlessly pull these dialectics of experience together, for a real conversation that enlarges the context of this existence ... into a communion with wider and more open realities.

      5 out of 5 stars Jeannie's Amazing Talent.......2005-08-08

I just recently competed in a national Fine Arts competition in Denver and I met Jeannie there. She was in the same hotel as I was doing a Unitarian Universalists Music conference and we ended up getting to sing together. Her voice is outstanding! I actually didn't realize she was as big as she is until just today because I got her business card and looked her up online only to find CD's and good reviews from top-notch people. This CD, I'm SURE, will be a good investment, because her voice is so beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!.......1999-12-04

I love this CD. My favorite song is "Driving," it really rocks. Boy this woman can sing. The sound quality is superb. Her voice is powerful, moving and beautiful. The musicianship excels. Her lyrics bring you into the songs.
