This is the best Leon Redbone album I've heard (I own about 7 and have heard parts from his other albums). In fact, this is one of my favorite albums of all time. One gem after another. Beautiful music. A Classic.

Some musicians are out there to keep traditional music alive. Ry Cooder springs to mind. He does it multiculturally, whereas Leon Redbone and Randy Newman stick pretty close to Americana and the Hoagy Charmichael school of singer. I love the old stuff. It's just such a serendipitous/smooth/Moonlight on the Wabash Old School sorta thing! Not too many of us were even born when these tunes were popularized, but like Harry Nilsson's "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night" and Linda Rondstadt's great renditions of classic tunes, this recording is near landmark quality!

Great accompaniment from his backup band, as usual. Quality recording in every sense! Five stars easily!

Redbone for the Redbone fan. The right mix of the old classics done with that Redbone flair and those distinctive songs that are his own. I heartily recommend this work to anyone who enjoys Leon at his best.

If you like Leon Redbone (who doesn't), add this one to your collection. I have listened to this CD hundreds of times and I never get sick of it. A must have for any jazz lover.

5 out of 5 stars "Up A Lazy River" Reflects True Redbone Style.......2004-06-12

Leon Redbone's CD, "Up A Lazy River," is a beautiful look at this man's unique style and versatility. He's playful on "At the Chocolate Bon Bon Ball", mellow on "Lazy River", and artistic on "Play Gypsy Play." It's my favorite album by any artist. But then, I dig old popular music from the first half of the 20th century more than a lot of the overly noisy, "wall of sound" stuff that comes out of too many studios today.

I originally was given a cassette of this album about 8 years ago and that cassette was worn out pretty quickly. I love listening to his music for the lyrics as well as the tunes. I always loved seeing him on Johnny Carson when I was little and love his music now. I highly recommend this album and his music to everyone, especially if you love the Jazz of old. My favorite song on this album is "At the Chocolate Bon Bon Ball". Buy this album, you'll be glad you did.

The top songs on this CD are, in order, "A Dreamer's Holiday," "Bittersweet Waltz," and "You're A Heartbreaker" with "Lazy River" a close second. Leon's musical arranging talents shines as does his writing ability examplified in "Play Gypsy Play" and "Goodbye Charlie Blues." As is typical with Leon's recordings, the instrumentation varies with each song such that the music does not become boring over time. And if you are a Dr. John fan, listen for him on piano in "Bittersweet Waltz." Leon's singing style is mostly straight which brings out the fullness of his deep voice.

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Honestly, I got this cd because I was on a hunt for the song 'up a lazy river' ... (long story, but its a welcome memory from my childhood)...

I've always been vaugely interested in jazz, but being a music lover in general, and busy with tons of other genres, I always told myself "I'll get to jazz eventually"....

Well, thank GOD I chose this Sidney cd from the many variations of 'up a lazy river' I could have purchased. I'm happily surprised to have found myself a GREAT starter cd for someone interested in checking out jazz!

Ovbiousley 'up a lazy river' is my favorite track, but they're all fabulous and interesting....this cd is really righteous, and I can't wait to get all the other tracks stuck in my head. ;>

This is a beautiful set, with Sidney Bechet in stellar form throughout, and to sweeten the deal he is joined by the great cornetist Muggsy Spanier on tracks 1-8 and 18-19. These are some of the finest, most luscious jazz recordings one could hope to hear, with Bechet's clarinet and soprano sax alternately spilling forth like sweet molasses and striking like Dixie lightning. China Boy is absolutely transcendent in all its zooming, swirling brilliance, and on tunes such as Sweet Lorraine and September Song, Bechet and Co. squeeze every last exquisite drop of melody and emotion into flawless readings which will leave one with little doubt of Bechet's special powers.

This package is of the highest quality in all areas. All session dates, locations and musicians are clearly listed, along with some truly intelligent and enlightening liner notes. What really counts however, is sound quality, and my expectations were far exceeded in that department, as the sound is utterly clear, warm and bright, with virtually no surface noise.

Aside from having the great Muggsy on board, the listener is also treated to the presence of Pops Foster on bass, Baby Dodds on drums, and stride piano master James P. Johnson on multiple tracks. The sessions range in size from quartet (tracks 1-8, from 1940), to septet (two sessions from 1949), to octet (on two live New York radio sessions, complete with audience, from 1947).

This disc is simply bursting with life, and will have you drifting Up A Lazy River and doing the Polka Dot Stomp in no time. Recommended.

Sidney Bechet had one of the warmest, most powerful sounds in jazz music, and his vibrant playing is very recognizable in this album. Included on this collection are 8 songs from the classic 1940 New York session with Muggsy Spanier. Muggsy Spanier gives Sidney Bechet just the right kind of backing to inspire to a real jazz tour de force. The brilliant Muggsy Spanier is also included in two songs with the This is Jazz All-Stars. The song 'Squeeze me', by Fats Waller, is a winner on this album, but there are many contenders for this title in the many classics collected here. There are also 5 very fine recordings from 1949 with Bob Wilber's Jazz Band, among them the wonderful 'Waste no tears'. This is a very good introduction to Sidney Bechet's jazz music, and proves why he is so highly regarded now, as he was in his lifetime.

        The appropriately titled Lost Works rescues three Cage works from obscurity. The City Wears a Slouch Hat dates from 1942 but has its premiere commercial release here some 54 years after completion and four years after Cage's death. A radio play broadcast in Chicago by Columbia Broadcast System, its text was written by writer/poet Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972). As the aptly described sound orchestra drifts between recognizably urban sounds that set mood and place for the characters, it also liberally proffers percussion passages that shift from background to foreground--the kind of non- programmatic accompaniment that more traditional radio plays shun. The original broadcast recording, which surfaced on a bootleg LP in Germany, was shelved and the score for Slouch Hat was thought to be lost until 1990, when the finished manuscript was found among a collection of radio play scores donated by CBS to the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts. Essential Music has reinstated and expanded musical passages as Cage's score intended. Fads and Fancies in the Academy, for piano and small percussion orchestra, was written for a Maria van Tuyl dance at Mills College (Oakland, California) in 1940, but was unknown until Cage presented it to his publisher shortly before his death. Those who think Cage's music is too far out will be surprised by these melodic pieces, rapturous and delightful--and tuneful! A Chant with Claps, the undated final work in this terrific disc, is a brief, whimsical piece for Sidney Cowell on the occasion of her and Henry's anniversary. --Tom Welsh

          Leon Redbone's CD, "Up A Lazy River," is a beautiful look at this man's unique style and versatility. He's playful on "At the Chocolate Bon Bon Ball", mellow on "Lazy River", and artistic on "Play Gypsy Play." It's my favorite album by any artist. But then, I dig old popular music from the first half of the 20th century more than a lot of the overly noisy, "wall of sound" stuff that comes out of too many studios today.

          I originally was given a cassette of this album about 8 years ago and that cassette was worn out pretty quickly. I love listening to his music for the lyrics as well as the tunes. I always loved seeing him on Johnny Carson when I was little and love his music now. I highly recommend this album and his music to everyone, especially if you love the Jazz of old. My favorite song on this album is "At the Chocolate Bon Bon Ball". Buy this album, you'll be glad you did.

          The top songs on this CD are, in order, "A Dreamer's Holiday," "Bittersweet Waltz," and "You're A Heartbreaker" with "Lazy River" a close second. Leon's musical arranging talents shines as does his writing ability examplified in "Play Gypsy Play" and "Goodbye Charlie Blues." As is typical with Leon's recordings, the instrumentation varies with each song such that the music does not become boring over time. And if you are a Dr. John fan, listen for him on piano in "Bittersweet Waltz." Leon's singing style is mostly straight which brings out the fullness of his deep voice.

          As a trombone player, I'm probably biased, but it seems to me that most of the really great big bands were centered around trombone-playing leaders. Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller played mellow swing; Si Zentner played raucous music that brought a smile to your face. His pedigree was spectacular, playing with Les Brown, Harry James, and Jimmy Dorsey before forming his own band in the late 50s. If you've never listened to his music, this is a great place to start--it is an excellent compilation. The only regret is that his arrangement of "Walk on the Wild Side" was not included.

          Quick, which group won the Downbeat Poll for best big band thirteen times straight? Aw, you peeked. I first saw Si Zentner's "Orchestra" live around 1960 at a shopping center (no malls in those days). An afternoon performance, out in the hot sun, Si and his gang were frankly wonderfully noisy and rowdy beyond belief (for this 12 year old anyway). Most distinct memory was Si telling the audience, "Now settle down, we're going to play something nice and quiet," and then letting all hell break loose, doing something even louder than the previous six songs. This recording (actually a two-fer of 1961-2 Liberty LPs from Collectables) captures that rambunctious spirit, but sometimes squanders the opportunity, choosing instead to showcase some less than compelling hit material. The tracks are all short, good for airplay but frustrating if one wants to hear an extended solo. The well-conceived big band arrangements of the hits are largely high quality, transforming those slim pickin's into aesthetically acceptable, listenable goodies. Zentner's trombone can be stubbornly lyrical, even when the rest of the band is flailing away uptempo. The recorded sound is top-notch (Liberty was an early stereo advocate). Time has been unkind most to the few songs he did with a twist beat, with one glaring exception, the vigorous, joyful "Lazy River," a Grammy-winning single, which still ranks as one of the best two-minute excursions in Hitsville in the early '60s.
